I am going to Vegas in October and looking for a little help. I know the strip quite well as this will be my third time to Vegas in less than 3 years. I will preface by saying that is where I want to stay, not downtown. The question I have is about hotel deals. I always hear about people getting outrageously good deals at different hotels. I know a lot of time this comes from people signing up for "players cards" during previous trips. But if you were me (having never signed up for any of that stuff on previous trips), what do you think is the best way to find a killer deal? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Depends on where your interested in staying.
Weekday trips are cheaper since rates double friday-sunday
inexpensive is Imperial Palace, or just off the strip Gold Coast.
decent but not outrageous would be New York New York, maybe Luxor, Rio(just off strip)
Players card is easiest way to get discounts, and you can use your playing from this trip towards your bill when you check out.
They look at mainly judge comps by How long you spend at the tables & your average minimum bet followed up by your win/loss.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

I found that dealing straight with the hotels is the best way to go - especially if you will be going with buddies (ie. cramming 4-5 in a room). Continually check the hotels websites. In the past, I've booked a room, and found that they dropped the price in the interem - I called, and they adjusted my price to the current offer.
If it's just you, or you and wife/significant other, you might w3ant to try package deals online at travelocity/Yahoo travel, or Orbitz. Probably also worth a call to the local travel agent, to see how they compare.
Personally, I'm a big fan of New York, New York. Good price, 4-5 bars that are open every day of the week, and that you don't necessarily have to be all GQ'd up to walk into, great pizza place for quick eats (Cicero's), great steakhouse (Gallaghers), and central location. Right next door to the free tram that takes you down to Mandalay, across the street from MGM, and right next door to Monte Carlo and the Monte Carlo Brewery - a Beerdowner favorite!

yeah as of right now its looking like NY NY. I love the locations you mentioned and I too enjoy the Monte Carlo brew pub. I will be there the weekend of Osu/Psu and Browns/Rams so staying @ NY NY puts me close enough to Mandalay Bay and MGM, my two favorite books to hang at. I was at Mandalay in 04 for NFL opening weekend when we beat the Ravens at home to start the year.

Admittedly, as NY, NY is my favorite, but they probably have the worst sports book on the entire strip from a viewing standpoint --- but within a few steps of the sports book is ESPNZone, so I guess it evens itself out. (Although that ESPNZone is ridiculously overpriced! I just prefer to walk over to the Monte Carlo brewery)

I think I read that it shut down a few months ago...not 100% positive through. I think it's getting smashed for that new "Echelon" project.

Me & Colleen's view from the Rio 30th floor... ...in front of the Bellagio... ...and my sweetytart after dinner at one of the Italian Restaurants at New York, New York... Look on the net, go to travelocity and other similar sites, you should be able to find some bargains.

Excalibur --- Never stayed there, but heard the rooms were "so-so" - which is pretty much how they all are on the Strip (excluding the obvious few). Problem with Excaliber is that they have nothing to keep you there, in terms of non-gambling attractions.
Flamingo --- Good room rates, considering you're center Strip, and virtually have the same view of the Bellagio fountains as those paying $500/night at Bellagio have. Older crowd, but a beaurtiful pool, and Margaritaville is fun to sit and chill out in the morning and midday, just people watch from the 3rd story balcony.

I stayed in Excalibur a couple of years ago. It is one of my favorite hotels on the strip. Mostly due to the price. I will admit that outside of gambling there is only a few things -- the Dinner Theatre to be one. However, as others have mentioned, its location is nice because NY NY is across street as is MGM. Luxor is right next door. I for one do not care what the rooms are like due the fact that I am not in them while there. But Excaliburs were not bad.

I went with a friend of mine back in February. He had comped rooms from Harrah's and Flamingo. He said its a piece of cake to get those using the players cards at those two. I stayed 4 nights and all it cost was $208 in round trip airfare.
They're in the middle of the strip.

Note that the Hard Rock pays the girls from the strip club across the street to hang out at the pool during the day.
Sunday through Thursday trips will get you a room that costs $200-$400/night on the weekend for $49-$150/night.
Unless you are a heavy duty gambler the player's club card won't get you much. Maybe a free buffet but that is really about it.

Slot Club Cards baby. I just got back from Vegas. We payed 29 a night at the Imperial Palace for a room with a view (some rooms there are cheap because you look at a brick wall, lol). When we got back home, we had received an offer for $59 for the Wynn. Sign up for their cards, play a few slots to get into their system, and then leave.
Either that or drop a crap load of cash on the tables, lol. I know someone who left the Mirage driving home in a Bentley. It sure sounds great....except for the fact that he dropped 2 million on the tables, lol.

The cheapest bigger Hotel on the Strip that I found was The Excalibur. On the strip and right in between places like the New York, New York, MGM and the Luxor.
Weekdays are cheaper, and yes, signing up for the player cards will get you offers. And using it more will give you better perks. If you gamble for 'x' amount of time while you're there at tables, you'll get comped a free room next time, like my father-in-law. But that's a good amount of time in the casinos.

It doesn't help you this trip.....but join a slot club at the casino you like...then spend your money there, or another casino owned by the same company...if you play table games, be sure to have your time rated....give the dealer your slot card so they can track your play. If you want to play other places, join their club too...it only takes 2-3 minutes to join up.
The only way to get comps is to let them know you play at their property. After that, you will start getting invites to reduced rooms and free meals, table credits etc..

If you have a choice, always go during the week or a couple weeks before a holiday. The deals will be amazing (I've stayed right on the strip at the Tropicana for 35 a night in a really nice room).
The Tropicana is pretty reasonable, but I'm not even sure if that's open anymore. Plus, it's right on a good corner (Tropicana, MGM, NY NY and Excalibur).
I've stayed in the Luxor and that was pretty sweet (stayed in the pyramid, so the elevators go diagonal instead of up and down). But, that's kind of pricey.
The best room I've ever stayed in anywhere was the Penthouse Suite at the Bellagio, but that was $600/night. However, it was worth every penny and more.
For deals, I'd get on expedia or travelocity and see what kind of flight/hotel deals you can get. The Sahara isn't horrible, either, and with that tram they have going, for a couple bucks, you can get to the rest of the strip pretty easily. Plus, the Sahara often has good gambling (as in: cheap).
If you wanted to stay right on the main part of the strip, the Imperial Palace is usually the cheapest. The San Remo (now Hooters) was amazing. The rooms were perfectly fine and it was essentially just a one block walk to the strip (located right behind the Tropicana). Now, I think it's pretty expensive since it's Hooters and the gambling there sucks now.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism
