Okay all you Indian fans. Who remembers a pitcher you had named Larry Burchart? Here's his rookie card. Anyway, played golf with him today. Nice guy. He's a little older now but surprisingly enough still looks enough like that picture to be recognizable. Larry Burchart, who hasn't heard of him in the MLB circles? On the other hand, who the heck that Rollie Fingers guy? With a name like that, I would expected him to have a handlebar mustache. Btw, cool story Tulsa

Braves acquire Swisher, Bourn from Indians in exchange for Johnson FOX Sports AUG 7, 2015 at 3:18p ET SHARE 1 TWEET 0 86024633 Nick Swisher will join Atlanta's lineup once healthy. Jason Miller The Atlanta Braves have acquired first baseman Nick Swisher, center fielder Michael Bourn and cash from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for third baseman Chris Johnson. Swisher, 34, has played in only 30 games this season because of a knee injury that has required two trips to the disabled list. He is hitting .198/.261/.297 with two homers and eight RBI, and he last played June 12. Swisher is under contract for $15 million next season and has a vesting option for $14 million for the 2017 season. Bourn, 32, is batting .246/.313/.294 with 19 RBI and 13 stolen bases this season. He is under contract for $14 million in 2016 and has a $12 million vesting option for 2017. Bourn played for the Braves from 2011-12. The 30-year-old Johnson is hitting .235/.272/.320 with two homers and 11 RBI in 56 games this season. Johnson will make $6 million in 2016, $7.5 million in 2017 and has a $10 million team option for the 2018 season. http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/story/atlan...n-waiver-080715

Wow! How did they manage that?
What a great trade! (even if Johnson never becomes anything)

So do the Contracts go with them , or are we still on the hook for some of the money's ? It says we send cash, so I would guess that ends all of our obligations. According to CBS Sports, we are sending $10 million. Well, the Indians are. The rest of us are off the hook.

It looks like the Braves will pay the rest of Swisher's and Bourn's salaries this year which amounts to just under $10m, so that explains the cash we sent. The good news is the Indians are off the hook for $29M they would have had to pay them next year, as well as their vesting options for 2017, believed to be in the $1-2M range, per guy. Chris Johnson will make $7M next year and $9M in 2017, after which the Indians could decline his option. He's having a bad year, but has apparently been injured. He did hit .320 in 2013 with 12-13 HR and 60-ish RBIs. He looks to be a Casey Blake type guy who has a decent bat and can play 3B, 1B, and a little OF.
If the numbers I'm reading are right, it looks like John Hart (Braves' President of Baseball Operations) may have saved the Indians' 2016 and 2017 season, because they now have the financial flexibility to sign a significant FA this winter, and are no longer hamstrung with two non-productive roster spots.

Oh man! We trade away our bats ...... and drop 17 on the Twins! MLB Recap - Minnesota Twins at Cleveland Indians - Aug 08, 2015 - CBSSports.com http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/gametracker/recap/MLB_20150808_MIN@CLE CLEVELAND (AP) The Cleveland Indians haven't had much to smile about lately. Their 17-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday night gave them that opportunity. ''Today was a real good, fun productive day for us,'' manager Terry Francona said. ''It's one game, but it's a heck of a lot better than losing.'' Recent trades of veterans David Murphy, Brandon Moss, Michael Bourn and Nick Swisher have left the Indians looking elsewhere for production. Jerry Sands hit a pinch-hit grand slam and Abraham Almonte, called up from the minors before the game, was 4 for 5 with a two-run homer as the Indians recorded season-highs in runs and hits (19). Sands, batting for Lonnie Chisenhall in the fifth, homered to right off Blaine Boyer. Three consecutive walks by Ryan O'Rourke loaded the bases before Sands broke an 0-for-11 slump with his second career grand slam. ''It was good to come off the bench and help the team,'' Sands said. ''The last week or so isn't exactly what I'd like to do.'' Almonte, acquired from San Diego for pitcher Marc Rzepczynski on July 31, was called up from Triple-A Columbus and started in center field. He doubled in each of his first two at-bats then singled in the sixth and homered in the eighth. ''I know one game doesn't define somebody's career but at the same time we're looking for reasons to be excited about guys,'' Francona said. ''If you can't get excited about that. ...'' Almonte was told Friday night he was being called up and made the 2 1/2-hour drive to Cleveland. According to STATS in research dating to 1914, Almonte is the only player in team history to have four hits and three extra base hits in his Indians debut. ''It feels good,'' he said. ''When you do that it's really exciting.'' Trevor Bauer (9-8) won for the first time since July 8, allowing four runs in 6 1-3 innings. He gave up solo homers to Joe Mauer and Eddie Rosario and a two-run homer to Kurt Suzuki. Twins manager Paul Molitor, who had already gone through six pitchers, used outfielder Shane Robinson to finish the eighth. Robinson walked Mike Aviles with the bases loaded, but retired the next three hitters. ''It's been a tough trip for us,'' Molitor said. ''I tried to go as long as I could without going to a position player, but I had to get Robinson in just to get us off the field.'' Jose Ramirez, replacing the injured Jason Kipnis at second base, was 3 for 5 with a career-high three RBIs for the Indians. Angels starter Ervin Santana (2-3) allowed eight runs in 2 1-3 innings. A fire in a building behind the ballpark's garage broke out about 45 minutes before the game started, sending clouds of black smoke billowing into the sky. The fire was under control about 30 minutes later and the game began on time. Santana fell to 1-7 in 10 career starts at Progressive Field with the only win a no-hitter while pitching for the Angels on July 27, 2011. NEW PLAYER Chris Johnson, acquired from Atlanta on Friday for Bourn and Swisher, flied out as a pinch-hitter for the Indians in the eighth. ''I can play three different positions, so I feel like I can be versatile,'' Johnson said. ''I feel like I can hit a little bit. I enjoy being in the batter's box so I'm not too worried where it's at. Hopefully I can help out any way I can.'' TRAINER'S ROOM Twins: OF Byron Buxton (left thumb sprain) was 3 for 5 in the first game of his minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Rochester on Friday. Indians: RHP Cody Anderson was placed on the 15-day DL with a strained left oblique. The rookie was 2-1 with a 0.89 ERA in his first four career starts, but went 0-2 with a 10.19 ERA in his last four. UP NEXT Twins: RHP Phil Hughes has surrendered an AL-high 27 homers in 22 starts. He leads the league in hits allowed with 163 and issues the fewest walks per nine innings at 0.9. Indians: RHP Corey Kluber seeks his third straight win over Minnesota. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner is 4-2 in 11 career appearances against the Twins.

Too bad Progressive Field isn't more of a triples park - one of Almonte's gap doubles might have been a triple and he'd have the cycle in his first game with the Featherheads. As it is, his OPS is 2.60. If he can keep that up, he's a shoo-in for the HOF.

Man, 14 runs yesterday .... 8 runs today ... (through 8) Chris Johnson, the guy who didn't hit in Atlanta .... has 4 hits today. Almonte has another HR today ..... Who thought that dumping all of our expensive bats would improve the offense? Chris Johnson just made a really nice play at 1st too.

Us long-time Indians fans know what’s going to happen this week.
The Yankees just got swept by Toronto. In fact they were shut-out the last two games. Last time that happened - 1999.
In fact the Yankees have been held scoreless now for 26 innings. Last time - 1991.
They play the Indians in Cleveland 3 games starting tomorrow.
GEE I wonder what’ll happen? And I’ll get to see all 3 games on TV.

Anybody see the MLB record that was broken a couple days ago? Something that had never been done, ever, in the history of all of the MLB?
On a night with 14 games, all 14 home teams won. Hard to believe but that has never happened before.. and the Indians could have ruined it but they won in the 16th inning.

I know there are billions of MLB useless records, big and small, but I find this one completely amazing. In the long history of MLB, it's never happened before? Wow. And yes, to think the Indians beat the Yankees in a 16 inning game to set this mark for baseball makes it that much cooler.

Well, let's be clear, in the 100+ year history of the MLB, they didn't expand to 28 teams until 1993.. so it would have been impossible for 14 home teams to win on the same day before that.

5.5 games back of last WC spot.....just saying. Well, Corey Kluber is pitching like a CYA winner again - another complete game win last night. Indians still sit 5-1/2 out of the Wild Card. If someone could get Trevor Bauer back to throwing strikes, and if Kluber, Carrasco, and Salazar can just keep doing what they're doing, we might just see a team in contention come September 1. BUT - my rule of thumb is no playoff talk until the team gets back to .500. They're 54-60 right now.

I know Shapiro was hamstrung by Dolan's operating budget, and he should get credit for a few good trades. Trading Bartolo Colon for Cliff Lee, Grady Sizemore, and Brandon Phillips was grand theft. But a team with financial constraints absolutely must draft well, and Shapiro's drafts were, for the most part, a black hole.

By lamp above:
"I see the Indians are on the edge of the WC chase."
1) The Tribe pitching is championship quality. 2) Some key players appear to be healthy for the stretch. 3) I've said it before, Terry Francona has a knack for having his team peaking in September.
If... oh boy... the Tribe can put up ~ 7-3 out of their next ten games, they'll be more than on "the edge".

I see the Indians are on the edge of the WC chase. Yea, its unfortunate that they waited this long to start their run, they might run out of time. The are also trailing about 4 teams. If you have to gain on 1 team with a 5 game lead it's easier than skipping over 4 teams, some of them are bound to keep winning.

One heck of a game last night! David Price normally doesn't lose, especially at home. Salazar pitched a very, very solid outing. And, we had just enough timely hitting and good fortune to walk away with the win. Go Tribe!!
