One is Cole Konrad of Minnisota
and the other, Tommy Rowlands of Ohio State. Both two time wrestling national championship winners.

Im not sure who will be interested in this story but i attend Bishop Ready where Rowlands graduated from. He hasn't played football since 8th grade for the middle school football team i played on. Our coach did say he was one of the best players he has ever coached but then didn't play in High school (rumor has it to prevent injury for wrestling) and won at least 2 or 3 State Championships for Bishop Ready in Wrestling.

I Doubt either will stick but its interesting to see the Jets go this way.

This should surprize no one, aside from Neal, who is a bit more than servicable, a college wrestler generally has a better understanding of leverage possibly, with training the ability to play in the NFL.

Nick Hartwick, with the Chargers also was a college wrestler. I am sure there are others.

Cole Konrad is a BEAST!!!!! The guy wrestles like a 160 pounder!!!! I am not sure of the last time I ever saw a Heavyweight move and wrestle like him. Think Matt Hughes in an Orpheus Roye type body...LOL If he can pick up the game quickly He would be tailor made for a 3-4 DLineman...

I think every football player should wrestle for at-least a year.

I wrestled for 8 years and aside from the conditioning (if your not dropping weight abnormally) it teaches you great balance and a lower center of gravity which is ideal for any lineman.

Not to mention great hand fighting and positioning. For recievers and DBacks it helps at the bump. for Linebackers it helps to shed blocks. For running backs it teaches balance....and it is obvious that it is helpful to both sides of the Line.

I wrestled for 5 years and had some tendon damage in my foot that pretty much stopped it from going further(well that and I wasn't exactly Iowa material to begin with...LOL)...but what an awesome sport. I remember when the NCAA Championships were being held at the Convocation Center here in Cleveland....My Bro in Law...a wrestler as well but from that state up north, got us tickets for the Finals. They had a double Letter designation for the seats so we were going to be High up...but hey...we were there. So we get there and give our tickets to the usher to get our seats and he starts heading down the stairs...ok...cool...and then we kept going down....and we kept going down.....and then down some more...we had seats in the lowest section and we were eye level with the platform they had the mat on...and not 20 feet from us was none other than Dan Gable.......Man that guy was intense!!!!! Was a great day of matches....Iowa and Oklahoma State were battleing for top spots but they forgot about Minnesota and Central Michigan...saw the light heavyweight from THE Ohio State University just humiliate his opponent with a technical pin....all in all a great day.

My science teacher at Eastlake Junior High told a few of us wrestlers that he was the last kid in high school to beat him. They were teammates when he was a senior and Gable was a freshman.

Because of school politics he was the JV junior high basketball coach instead of a wrestling coach at any level in the district.

I am trying to remember the history of Gable....I know that he only lost like 2 or 3 matches lifetime....But I do remember hearing about a guy that did ride out a win against him...and then Gable just punished the guy the next time they met. I mean he was out to hurt the kid. Gable wrestled that way. It really looked like he was out to hurt people. I can't say if it is true or not, but I did see a meaness in his matches. It intimidated you just watching...which I guess is part of the point. I know more about his coaching. And he weeded out the weak very quickly. But if you made the cut....There isn't a better coach to have. He does EVERYTHING in life 100%. He gave everything to his guys. He built men not just wrestlers. As impressive as his wrestling career is...his coaching career outshines it by far.

You could see a definite style in the Iowa wrestlers and this was like a year after he stepped down from Iowa as HC. But he was right there at matside. He sat while other matches were taking place...but as soon as Iowa set foot on the mat he was out of his chair and in full swing. But his style was definitely there in Iowa. They were extremely patient and in some rights boring. They would circle and hand fight. This would go on for some time. but the very moment the opponent would make the slightest mistake. They pounced on it with speed that is hard to believe even though it just happened right in front of your eyes. Man were they fast.

Just looked him up on wikipedia...says he was not allowed to wrestle as a freshman and he wrestled unattached to a school and he lost to Ron Keister.....but then would not lose a match until his last match in college to take the NCAA runner up trophey. a span of 164 matches. I would say that is impressive...LOL
