Mayle and/or Lenz may have told the team to go eff themselves when they were asked about the practice squad. No way they would have taken Jennings over Lenz as far as I can tell.
I seriously doubt that. Perhaps one or the other had feelers from another team that they preferred, or maybe they just weren't asked for one reason or another. Maybe the Browns like Jennings' potential as a returner? Who knows?
If a young player is unemployed, I doubt that he tells a team that wants to give him an opportunity to continue his NFL career, and his dream, to "go eff themselves." There are no guarantees that they will ever get another shot.

UPDATE: It appears as though Wynn will sign to the Browns' practice squad on Sunday.
Here is the status of other practice squad eligible players you might be wondering about:
What About These Players?
QB Pat Devlin - Unsigned RB Timothy Flanders - Unsigned WR Vince Mayle - Unsigned WR Josh Lenz - Unsigned OG Karim Barton - Signed to the Texans' practice squad. OL Vinston Painter - Unsigned OL Eric Olsen - Unsigned DL Jacobbi McDaniel - Unsigned DL Dylan Wynn - Unsigned OLB Mike Reilly - Unsigned CB Robert Nelson - Signed to the Cardinals' practice squad. CB Joe Rankin - Unsigned S Landon Feichter - Unsigned
Cool. I think that Wynn showed some potential, and reportedly looked good, especially early in camp.

I actually liked Jennings as much as Lenz ... plus he's a returner, which helps his versatility. Are we talking Dylan Wynn or Shane Wynn?
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."
I'm glad we were able to get back Haynes Pullard. Undersized but he's physical and usually always around the ball. Shocked we were able to get him back.
Actually happy about Jennings too. I liked him as a WR and returner, just needs to learn how to secure the ball while in transition.
I'm shocked a ton of players spoke up about Lenz and no one wants him. I'm more shocked the FO couldn't create one space for him on the PS.
I'm struggling with the reasoning keeping Lenz. I like the kid, but who are you sitting in order for this kid to play on Sunday? Gabriel, Benjamin, or Hawkins? Browns are weak in the red zone. Are you sitting Bowe or Pryor playing Lenz? Who do you sit on special teams Lenz is better?
I get "play like a Brown." I also get athlete and talent. I believe last year this was a big tic against Farmer/Pettine for having so few.
This is good debate. Teams need athletes as well as lunch pail guys. What is the correct percentage? When do you decide to take the lunch pail guy over the athlete?

I don't get all this angst over releasing Lenz, the guy has been on the roster or practice squade of 3 three previous teams they all had the chance to evaluate his talent and said no thanks. Now he is released by the browns and Pettine and Farmer are the bad guys for not signing this "great talent". I liked the guy but it's just another day in NFL for 100's of players like him that didn't make the cut.
Browns sign Austin Davis, add two to practice squad Posted 5 minutes ago
Clevelandbrowns.com @Browns Facebook Former Rams QB started eight games in 2014
BEREA, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns on Monday signed QB Austin Davis to the 53-man roster and signed OL Garth Gerhart and DL Dylan Wynn to the practice squad. In addition, the club placed DB Charles Gaines (hamstring) on injured reserve – designated for return. Davis is 6-2, 221-pounds and in his fourth NFL season out of Southern Mississippi. Originally signed by St. Louis as an undrafted free agent in 2012, Davis made his NFL debut last year appearing in 10 games (eight starts) with the Rams. He completed 180 of 284 passes (63.4 percent) for 2,001 yards with 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He set USM single-season and career records for passing yards, touchdowns and completion percentage. A native of Collinsville, Miss., Davis graduated from West Lauderdale High School. Gaines, a sixth round pick this year, will be eligible to return to practice Week 6 and eligible to play Week 8. Gerhart is 6-1, 310 pounds and officially in his second NFL season out of Arizona State. He re-joins the Browns after initially signing with the club as an undrafted free agent in 2012 and spent that season on the club’s practice squad. He appeared in two games with the Packers last season. His brother, Toby, is a running back for the Jaguars. A native of Corona, Calif., Gerhart graduated from Norco High School. Wynn signed with the Browns as an undrafted free agent in May and was waived during final roster cuts. The practice squad is now at the NFL maximum 10 players.
Could it be that Lenz isn't on the practice squad because they know there's little chance he'll get snagged by another team. They put guys on the practice square they value BUT ALSO are perceived to have value with other teams. Since signing a player off another team's squad requires a team to put on the active 53 those players have an added barrier to becoming unavailable. Lens is exciting but he's high risk/ low percentage for any team who doesn't have a specific role for his specific skill set.

Something tells me people won't be too upset about this.
According to Pettine, he didn't want to sign with our PS because he wanted to explore other options. Dallas was obviously his other option. If he doesn't want to be here, then we don't need him.

I interpreted Pettine's comments about Mayle that he was unhappy with the team for cutting him and would rather be somewhere else. I could have the wrong read on it, but I guess he found somewhere else.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...
That's a deep reach based on what Pettine actually said, but whatever Mayle's reasoning, he is most welcome to ply his trade elsewhere. It sucks the pick didn't work out, but I will take Prior on the squad over Mayle on the PS any day. (If he has even a fraction of the impact Braxton Miller had last night we are golden.)

Gaines pulled hammy probably something that would be back in 3 weeks but put him on the mend for 6 to get room on the 53 for Davis QB.
I don't get this stuff about Lenz. 1. Jennings was talked about many times in pressers on being a guys who was impressing the Coaches. The decision to sign Jennings on the PS I'm sure was a major coaches input.
2. Possibly like Mayle, we talked to Lenz to add to the PS and he stated he wished to get onto a teams 53. Which is understandable. But Lenz is one of those irrelevant possible #53 on the roster who get cut when we add a Davis QB or something. Too much hullabaloo just to add to a premise Farmer does not know what he's doing.
3. Ahhhh...we added the wrong Wynn to the PS...OLB/DL Wynn instead of my favorite guy little Wynn WR. btw who I would have wanted on my squad over Lentz.

yep, just like Crowell UDFA makes it over drafted West. FA on the cheap Pryor makes it over drafted Mayle. I think we got the best in both occasions. To fill a need.

Who is Nick Wilson? I know he was well liked a fan favorite from the No Names trying hard for a spot. But on a football level I don't understand the hullabaloo.
I don't know...maybe its just me. But not a HOMER thing cause I was saying for a couple of weeks - on my own observations that LENZ would be slim to no chance of making our roster. We had Hawkins, Gabriel and Benjamin over him and I didn't really see him out there on special teams making a name for himself.
I liked him also just thought no way he would make the roster. I also said we would cut Mayle and want to sign him on the PS...but he chose not to sign with us.
WR pretty much went as I stated...I also thought out of all the no names (despite my favorite being the little guy Wynn) that Jennings had the best shot to stick - that was cause throughout training camp the coaches had raved about him and Lenz was always an after thought. Yeah he's working hard and doing well also type of stuff.
jmho...got no links to ODEs or anything - just my consistent football thoughts on the WR position. I did follow it closely why I also made a thread about them.

If Mayle didn't want to sign here so be it ... from a performance standpoint he didn't deserve it

Should have never used that decently high round pick on him. JMO but it was incredibly stupid. I doubt highly he makes Cowboy's practice squad.
And I'm a little shocked about Lenz. I kind of thought he'd already been taken by now. Shocked Mayle got a second shot before he did.
Mayle has huge upside. He has the size/speed you want at WR. He has all of the unteachable things. If a team develops him, they have a plus level starter.
Lenz is a small, slower receiver. If you develop him, you have a small, slower receiver. You might get a slot guy .... and we already have at least 2 or 3 guys who can already play the slot.
The Browns took a shot with Mayle because he was worth a shot. They had a ton of draft picks, so they took a shot on a guy they thought could become something special.
Then Pryor fell into their laps, and not only that, but he really looks like he might make the transition to WR. That really changed the equation. I think that Mayle would have made this team, on potential alone, if not for Pryor. Pryor changed everything though.

We're talking about a receiver. You can't coach size, you can't coach speed, and truthfully, I'm of the opinion that at this level/age, you can't coach catching the ball.
You can either catch, or you can't.
I'm not agreeing with you, not disagreeing. But I don't think you can coach "catching". JMO.

I used to think that was a load of crap... that it could be taught but when you survey the landscape of receivers we drafted that has issued in college... those same issues followed them to the nfl and no matter how much time spent on the jugs machine or with coaches, they just never seemed to get better... still seems weird to me, but the proof is there.

You can improve it though, especially with a guy like Mayle, who has only played the position for a couple of years.
There have been a number of guys who had their hands questioned coming into the league, who learned to improve them.
The Steelers have done wonders with guys like this. They took Mike Wallace, "Lets too many passes into his pads, resulting in some ugly drops", and turned him into a force on offense. link to NFL scouting report
They took Antonio Brown, who "has decent hands but it looks like the ball gets big on him at times and he traps too many passes in his body", and "needs to become more consistent catching the ball in a crowd", and turned him into a superstar with glue hands. Link to NFL scouting report
They took Martavis Bryant, a guy with "shaky hands -- tends to double-clutch the ball and makes too many easy drops", and who was "a better tester than football player at this stage of his development, he has tools to be molded if he learns to hone his focus", and turned him into a guy who looks like a major offensive weapon. Link to NFL scouting report
Some teams do a great job with this kind of player, and the Steelers, unfortunately, are one. Having a top end QB is also a big piece of that particular puzzle. I do think that receivers can improve their hands to a large degree as a pro, but it takes having a lot of the right pieces in place.

I think that by the time your in the NFL, if you are a WR that can't catch, there are other problems causing that. These guys make it through college because the 1 out of every 3 times that it is thrown to them and they actually catch the football, it goes for a big TD. They think they can get by on athleticism and don't put it the effort. Those things change in the NFL. Yes you can coach catching the football, but the guy on the other end has to be coach-able. Too many Divas in the WR spot think that effort is what guys without their talent have to put in. WR is already one of the hardest spots to learn in the NFL because of precise route running, hot route reads, and timing routes with the QB. You add a few thousand reps on top of that with a JUGS machine and it's just too much for guys that figured out things too late.
Yeah, so, like I said, you can't teach "catching". None of those guys had trouble catching. The only issue (receiving wise, that is), was some nitpicker saying "lets the ball get to his pads sometimes."
You can coach, to a limited extent, "catch with your hands, not your body", but you can't coach catching. Maybe I'm nit picking now, I don't know.
I don't think Mayle's problem was can't catch as he made some great catches in college I think his stems from a lack of concentration and he also had problems route running. He only played WR 1 year at a Community college and 2 years at Washington St., before that he was focusing on basketball. If someone can work with him on the nuances of the game and he's willing to put in the time I think Mayle can be a decent player.

YT...just did a fact check on your comment about how slow Lenz was compared to Mayle...
According to what I could find, first, Lenz was not invited to the combine but does have Pro Day results...Mayle was invited to combine...
Lenz had 7/108 yds, leading all WRs in yds and lead the team in yds/catch 15.4..had longest reception 48 yds.
Mayle had 5/52 yds ranking him 7th on the Browns/receiving..yds/catch 10.4..24yds longest reception.
If Mayle was that much better than Lenz, why did Farmer allow Mayle to be stolen away from the Browns for nothing?...resulting in another Ray Farmer wasted draft pick.
Fact is, Lenz was a better receiver than Mayle, faster and more polished than Mayle, especially in his route running. The only WR with better hands than Lenz was Hartline. Lenz actually reminds me a lot of Hartline.
