Today, Friday like everyday starts with a cup of Joe.

This past Sunday was no different. I got up. Made the coffee. Opened the laptop. I started to feel something I have never felt before. A kind of overall tightness.

I looked up heart attack symptoms. I checked every box. The pain was not bad as far as pain goes. What sticks is the feeling that "I have never felt this."

I live with my daughter and a grandson. She stuck her head inside my door. "I said something is wrong with me I think I am having a heart attack. See if we have any aspirin. We did not. I told her to run to the store and get some aspirin. I took the aspirin when she returned. I threw up. Then it was off to the hospital.

Massive heart attack from a blood clot in a major heart artery (widow maker). They operated and installed two shunts.

And here I am sipping coffee.

What a terrifying ordeal, glad you're OK! Good call on the aspirin, it may have saved your life. One thing you didn't mention and people should know, it's more effective to chew the aspirin before swallowing.

All that for a cup of coffee? Now that's going the extra mile!

Jokes aside, thank God you can be here sippin' on a cup of Joe right now. That's a crazy ordeal. I know you take care of yourself and stay in good health, but anything can happen at any time. You did the right thing and acted quickly. Another thing people do (especially men) is think they can just 'shake it off'. Thank God you have your daughter and a grandson there with you, another blessing. I know they fill your heart. Sunday, they helped you save it.

I hope you're back to 100 in no time. Thaty coffee tastes especially good today, doesn't it? wink

I'm glad you didn't procrastinate. That very well may have made the difference between life and death. Sadly I'm more of the "I don't need to go to the doctor. It will pass" kind of guy. I hope one day that mentality doesn't cost me my life.

It's great that everything was corrected and you're back to drinking your coffee.

Your mind works in a different way under crisis.

At first I was like "what is going on?"

Your mind wants to reject reality. "I will lay down and this will all go away." It did not. My instincts took control something is wrong here. My back and even my jaw felt tight. I actually took a shower and sat down in the tub and let the hot water just pour over my neck and back. I did that for maybe 2 minutes. When I got up.

That felt good but the chest pressure was still there. That is when I pulled up "heart attack symptoms".

I have a follow-up appointment today.

I was told at the hospital that I should fully recover. There was some heart damage but they expect it will fully recover.

My mother lived to 97. Neither my mother or father had any heart issues. I had a physical in December and MRI scan of my heart to look at plaque.

3 of the major arteries were clear one had a small amount of plaque. I am not overweight. I don't have diabetes. I have slightly low blood pressure. I swim two miles a week. I eat right. LDL Cholesterol borderline high. I take no prescriptions.

I checked off heart attack as a concern.

I feel extremely fortunate.

I would imagine you would be put on 3 daily meds.

Crestor, Toprol XL, and a coated baby aspirin.

Just had my scripts filled 2 weeks ago.

Glad you're still with us.

I can relate to those first 3 paragraphs all too well. Unfortunately for me, my problem is more that my mind ("emotional"/instinctive side) thinks there is always a crisis. So I'm stuck in/between constant fight or flight mode that never turns off. Have some really "fun" GAD, MDD, fatigue, and gastrointestinal symptoms seemingly stemming from it. Good times.

...what do you consider eating right? Personally, I'm not even sure what that means any more. Without growing one's own food, it's hard to know what is actually in things. I.e, not all apples provide the same nutrition. Were they sprayed with pesticide, etc? There is generic "nutritional information," but I have a sneaking suspicion most companies base those on best case scenarios, or only provide the best ingredients for the products used in those trials. Or another way to look at, a flavorless mass produced tomato is not the same as a flavorful home grown tomato. (I've never been a fan of tomatoes.) Do companies test with "good" tomatoes and then replace with cheap tomatoes (while likely adding sugar to improve flavor) for mass production? On package labelling, it just says tomatoes.

I wouldn't go so far as to say my mind rejects reality. There are certainly times I have rushed to the doctor or hospital. My mind sort of works on a case by case basis. I've never encountered an experience such as you did so I'm not sure quite how I would react under those circumstances. I certainly am one who doesn't tend to go to the doctor over everything. I'm hoping if I ever do experience something like you did that I make the right call. Most likely my wife wouldn't stand for me not going.

Glad you paid attention to what was going on with your body.

My dad had a heart attack at age 80, just over 2 years ago. He's doing great now, and has been since. Biggest issue for him after he got home was, as he said "Now, every little thing makes me wonder/question. Any time something doesn't feel just right, I think about going to the hospital."

bone...fortunately you recognized that something was not right and you acted. As we age it seems that we are faced with different aches and pains that we may not have experienced before. I have a tendency to push through those moments and not act out. Sharing the information and experience you just encountered
is an eye opener for me...better to be pro-active as much as possible.

Glad you are doing ok and thanks again for sharing...mac

At 76 you hope to learn things along the way.

Like many men we are kind of raised in that mentality "I am not going to the doctor unless.

But as you age you find out about the experiences of others as well as your own. I changed my ideas and if anything is out of the ordinary.

Preventive maintenance means getting physicals. Staying on top of your health. Being proactive.

In regards to "eating right." I guess you can look at that under many lights. I rarely eat out. I stay away from certain foods. Especially fried foods. I eat lots of fruit and a good amount of veggies. I am a rare bird when it comes to liquids. I don't drink alcohol. I drink almost nothing more than room temperature water because I like it.

I am not food perfect. I love ice cream and bakery goodies. Overall I pay attention to what I eat but I am not overly strict. Food choices are complicated.

I am glad you realized that something was wrong and got it cehcked out. I, like you, and many others my age, have realized that it makes no sense to leave things unchecked.

I'm team room temp water, too. Just wish I had a nice tasting spring/well handy. Would prefer not to do the local tap or plastic bottled. I will do teas. I also avoid the booze these days, though I'm contemplating making a tincture exception.

Baked goods and sweets are a weakness here, too. Would like to get into baking my own bread and swapping blended frozen fruit for store bought ice cream, but haven't gotten there yet. Do try to go to healthy-ish smoothies over other sweets now (not always successfully.)

I'm looking into growing more of my own food. Initial costs are somewhat prohibitive. Unfortunately, where I'm at saw a lot of RoundUp use.

I refuse to buy bottled water. I effing hate plastic.

What I have found that works for me is "zero water filter."

Set it next to my kitchen sink hanging into the sink. The water tastes great. I use it to drink and cook with.

The filter cartridges are fairly expensive but they last quite long.
