How about a single mom stopping having kids she can't afford? How is that rigged from the top down?

My wife worked with a young black girl from Toledo for a couple of weeks. She was what's called a "day laborer". She loved working here, but she kept telling my wife "it's just so different here. In my neighborhood it's not safe. I had a friend get murdered last week at a party."

Offered a full time job she said "I can't. I can't drive out here every day. Why would I?"

That's just one teeny tiny example, I know.

Ben carson is the best example. straight up uncle tom. how is he gonna be against government assistance, when he wouldn't be where he is today if his mother didn't get said government assistance?

when you're against the betterment of your community, you're an uncle tom. that goes for any race, whatever the equivalent term is. we all should be fighting for equal treatment under the law, regardless of skin tone/nationality.

Some say "oh, the inner city schools don't have the same textbooks, as they can't afford them. And they don't have as many computers." etc.

Here's a fact: the school I went to, the school my son went to, the school my daughter goes to, doesn't have all the same texts, or computers that private schools have.

So, should I be mad at the private schools and say "I didn't have a chance?"

Guess what, the black kids that went to our school, the puerto ricans, the mexicans - they're doing just fine. Some are stay at home parents, some are doctors, some are teachers, some are factory workers. They all had respect authority and law drilled into them. It's seemed to have worked, as opposed to the "don't respect authority" crowd.

public schools are different than private schools. you're making a horrible comparison.

here's a better comparison: compare the level of education, teachers, staff, community of a place like North Olmsted with East cleveland.

you're the one who went side ways, the point is that with regards to the inner city, it starts from the top down in order to fix things.

you don't live in the inner city, nor does the people that went to your school.

The term originates from the retelling of Uncle Tom, where the character is completely stripped of any defiance and fully resolves conflict through servitude. These Uncle Tom's were also portrayed as 'the fool', not the Christlike martyr he was in the book. So it's pretty accurate when describing a fool who seeks to serve his oppressor.

You're right. It has to do with the perversion and hatred that southerners put into the character. It's so sad to see a group of people do such a thing, but it happens.

But it was because white people rewrote the character and made it popular in their media. If you want to criticize the term then take it up with the creators of it.

I can't say I'm privy to who it was that basterdized this book or who first incorrectly coined the phrase "uncle tom" but the fallacy of it lives on to this day. People should read for themselves and quit following others incorrectly in the use of that label.
