It is long..probably going to be 14 or more hours..I hate united..but my wife is the boss right now..I do like posting..how I've made it all these years and never posting on any board, forum is a mystery to my wife and everyone who knows me.

But I'm a very private person and it was/is very difficult for me to put my life/thoughts out there for the world to see..I'm obviously working on that:)

I'm sorry for my response to you in the Chicago violence thread. i'm a little sensitive when I feel like someone is calling me a non truthful
person..trying to get used to the posting thing..Face to face is easy peasy..I read body language very well.

I'll post pics of my trip when I get home..I'm watching movies reading The art of wheel building. And pretending I'm interested in my wifes discussions with me:)

Have a good night.

meant for Jules not u CHS.

Lots of good reads listed above!

I just landed a job at Barnes&Noble and man oh man, the must-read list got longer and longer!!

I have been on a non-fiction kick all year. Heck, truth is stranger than fiction. I'm currently reading "Patriots: The Men Who Started the American Revolution".

My next book is definitely going to be this one...

Assholes: A Theory

I laughed for hours at the title and a quick skim through and I'll be adding it to my shelves at home.

Also, this one..."Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking" will be in my hands around the New Year.

Thanks for giving this introvert his next books to buy..they look good to me. I'm trying to be more outward but I struggle mightily with it.

I am currently reading the latest by Karen Slaugther and Gregg Isles.

Karen is the grittiest female I have ever read. She makes most men look like little sissies. Isles captures his part of the country very well. He's sold out a bit, lately. Leave the explosive movie scenes out, Greg. Your older stuff was better.

Still reading the Bible. I also read a couple of other books online in the last couple of weeks:

'Save Me From Myself' by Brian 'Head' Welch. Subtitled, "How I Found God, Quit Korn, Kicked Drugs and Lived to tell My Story."

This was one was pretty cool/different:

'Above Black: Project Preserve Destiny' by Dan Sherman. 'Insider account of alien contact and government cover-up.' It says it's a true story. Interesting and a fast read, as it's just under 60 pages or so.

I am up to 2 Samuel in my 2nd trip through the Bible.

It is amazing how much I missed the 1st time through.

I have also been reading "The Church Growth Handbook" ...... which I am sure is at the top of everyone's "must read" list. wink rofl

Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

John 14:19 Jesus said: Because I live, you also will live.

Ive read the bible cover to cover more then a few times and am still in awe of the things I pick up or missed from the time before.

Right now Im on these power of positive thinking kicks...sitting in front of me right now is...Handbook of Positive Psychology by C. R. Snyder and Shane J. Lopez

Also just got done with...The Power of Positive Thinking
by...Dr. Norman Vincent Peale

Love this kind of stuff..The only draw backs I can think of was it says to cut negative people out of your life keep them away at a distance...well damn if I cut out all of the negative people I'd have no interactions with anyone poke

Either way I love reading and implementing the stuff in my life...my oldest boy got hooked on the books also and has saw the results first hand..tries to tell his friends who are very young about it...and doesn't understand why the light bulb hasnt come on for them yet fingerscrossed

He is learning what to take and use what is practical for his life and well what is just not doable for him..

Karin (sic)... They are two of my favorite authors - read everything they've written (so I'm no newcomer to those two). Recently finished Pretty Girls - her first physcological thriller. That was a good read but it was "tough", if you know what I mean. You and I actually have a bit in common...except the Browns FO, past and present.

I finished "The Goal" by Eliyahu Goldratt last week, I'm in the middle of "Good to Great" by Jim Collins.

I highly recommend "The Goal" for anyone in the business world. It's a business book that focuses on the Theory of Constraints, which essentially states that a process can only produce as much as it's bottleneck (basically a "only as strong as weakest link" type thing). It goes through the steps of identifying, exploiting, fixing, etc.

The best part is that it is written like a novel, not your typical business book. It's a first person narrative of a plant manager for a hypothetical manufacturing company. He his plant is in jeopardy of shutting down, and he meets an old professor who teaches him using the Socratic method. This makes it all the more interesting and easy to follow, and makes it much more relatable to real life.

The theory and process can be applied to anything, not just a manufacturing plant. I've already implemented in at work with pretty good results, and it is very basic but very effective.

"Good to Great" is pretty good. A lot of the stuff he says makes sense, and is so simple yet you see it everywhere that people simply do not do some common sense stuff.

I've got really into books on tape and am fulling utilizing my Audible account. With a half hour drive to and from work, plus randomly driving around, I can finish most books like 5-7 days, using time I normally just wasted.

I'm about halfway through Stephen King's "The Stand".
I can see why it is considered one of his best, it's quite a good read. As I'm finishing up going through almost all of his books, I have to say that the "The Dark Tower" series is, by far, my favorite.

Recently finished A Terrible Love of War by James Hillman. The book is broken down into 4 chapters, and covers the human's psyche in all of them. It's all about our relationship with the ideas of war and peace. Hillman states that every man and woman is constantly at war and desires war. Conflict is an inherent part of life and war is conflict resolution in some way. His ideas on peace are great though. How they're fleeting moments between wars, the most important goal, but impossible to attain. The book's first two chapters are great. But Hillman slowly loses me in the second half, especially when he starts blaming the Abrahamic religions.
Here's a good piece from him that summarizes his views. Although it comes with a horrible reading of Jesus's "Sell your cloak, buy a sword" command.
Quote:

The dictionary’s definition, an exemplary of denial, fails the word, peace. Written by scholars in tranquillity, the definition fixates and perpetuates the denial. If peace is merely an absence of, a freedom from, it is both an emptiness and a repression. A psychologist must ask how is the emptiness filled, since nature abhors a vacuum; and how does the repressed return, since it must?
The emptiness left by repressing war from the definition of peace bloats it with idealizations–another classic defense mechanism. Fantasies of rest, of calm security, life as “normal,” eternal peace, heavenly peace, the peace of love that transcends understanding; peace as easy (shalvah in the Hebrew Bible) and completeness (shalom). The peace of naivete, of ignorance disguised as innocence. Longings for peace become both simplistic and utopian with programs for universal love, disarmament, and an Aquarian federation of nations, or retrograde to the status quo ante of Norman Rockwell’s apple pie. These are the options of psychic numbing that “peace” offers and which must have so offended Jesus that he declared for a sword.

Up next is Jacques Ellul's If You Are the Son of God: The Suffering and Temptations of Jesus. Should be an interesting read. Hopefully can get me to sleep by a decent hour too.
