I think so to...but if I had to choose between Hoyer and our Qb's well I never liked Hoyer's arm and he fell apart...idk man I'm not going to argue about Hoyer and also believe we will end up with something better then what we currently have.

I would to. At least McCown was consistent.

Mallett won 1 game
Yates won 1 game
Weeden won 2 games (while Yates started, the Texans were down 2 scores, IIRC, when Weeden came into the game)
Hoyer won 4 games

I wouldn't exactly polish up the MVP trophy for Hoyer just yet.

IMO Hoyer looked great before the injury but once he returned his play wasn't going to keep the starting position. I still think he would be a very serviceable backup, which is now something they don't have, because I'm pretty confident Johnny will be gone, and Josh may be as well.

Who knows, maybe they get two QB's in the draft. I'm lobbying for Goff and Sudfeld.

To be fair, they are in the extremely weak AFCS, and Weeden actually won his 2 games for them. (1 he came in when they were behind, and brought them back for the win, and the other was the start he won)

And let's not overlook that there is an entire team there besides the QBs.

I look at this list of candidates and I read how some of you want this guy or that guy. Almost everyone concedes we are NOT going to get an established, big-name coach. Many of you want a guy like Patricia or Gase.

Guys that have similar backgrounds to Pet.

I know that I am a "whiner" because I question the intelligence of the latest moves, but seeing as how both those guys [and most of the rest of the list] are not established and risky, wouldn't we have been better off keeping Pet?

I think most of you know, even if you do not want to admit in an attempt to win a message board argument, that hiring a new coach and GM in the same year means that a roster upheaval will take place.

And if we were to use analytics, wouldn't that tell us that we are pretty much guaranteed to suck again for at least a few years?

Since there appears to have been no real plan other than Sashi and Depo, yes we would have been better off. You would have thought there would have been a plan. This is nothing more than the wash, rinse, repeat we have seen every couple of years. Extremely disappointing. It appears Pettine and Farmer were fired just for the sake of being fired. This whole thing with Sashi and Depo is playing out like some science experiment that Haslam is conducting.

It always does. It wouldn't surprise me if analytics told them to get rid of Thomas ASAP. I mean he's getting old.

Since there appears to have been no real plan other than Sashi and Depo, I'm not sure how anyone can reach any other conclusion than things will continue to remain the same. Savage was so dead on in his quotes.

Furthermore, is anyone else concerned that Haslam completely overreacted here. Just because two guys don't get along doesn't mean the next two guys won't get along. But let's completely change the organizational structure to include babysitter. Unbelievable.

This whole thing is just bizarre. From the perpetual losing, to Manziel's bipolar behavior, to firing coaches and GMs with no plan ... I literally see zero hope at all.

Browns interview Gase and Austin first for coaching job

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Adam Gase was first up for the Browns. It's not known where the team ranks on his list.

Gase was the first of two candidates interviewed Wednesday by the Browns, who are in search of their eighth coach since 1999 after Mike Pettine was fired Sunday following a season-ending loss to Pittsburgh.

The 37-year-old Gase has been on the team's radar for several years. The Browns were interested in hiring him three years ago when he was with Denver, but Gase declined an interview to focus on the team's run to the Super Bowl.

Gase received credit for getting the most out of Bears quarterback Jay Cuter, who posted a career-high passer rating (92.3) this season.

Prior to his stint with Chicago, Gase spent two seasons as Denver's offensive coordinator working alongside quarterback Peyton Manning, who knows Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam.

If they decide to offer Gase their job, the Browns could have competition for him. He interviewed with the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday. He's also expected to meet with Miami and the New York Giants about their openings.

The Browns also confirmed they interviewed Detroit defensive coordinator Teryl Austin on Wednesday. The club has interviews lined up with six other candidates this week, with the latest to be scheduled Dallas secondary coach Jerome Henderson, who previously coached Cleveland's defensive backs.

The interviews took place on the road, giving the Haslams their first chance to work with a search committee comprised of newly appointed director of football operations Sashi Brown, Paul DePodesta, a former baseball executive and analytics expert hired on Tuesday, and Jed Hughes from consulting firm Korn Ferry.

The Haslams fired Pettine and general manager Ray Farmer after the team lost 18 of its last 21 games. The Haslams have already fired three coaches since taking over the franchise in 2012 and are determined to get this hire correct.

Once they find their coach, the Browns will turn their attention to finding a new GM, who will be in charge of acquiring talent but will defer control of the 53-man roster to Brown.

Austin's interview will satisfy the NFL's ''Rooney Rule'' requirement to speak with a minority candidate, but the 50-year-old has all the qualifications to take over a team.

He led Detroit's defense to a No. 2 ranking in 2014. And although All-Pro defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh left as a free agent and linebacker DeAndre Levy played in just one game because of a hip injury, the Lions ranked in the middle of the pack this season. Austin was also forced to play inexperienced players following a rash of injuries to his secondary.

''Given the opportunity, he'll do good,'' Lions cornerback Rashean Mathis said. ''You never know. But I think he has the potential and the pedigree to do well. It just depends.

''A lot depends on success in the National Football League and it's not just up under a head coach. It's the organization as a whole and definitely players on your roster. A lot goes into the equation. He definitely would be a good variable in the equation.''

Former Buffalo coach Doug Marrone is scheduled to meet with the Browns on Thursday. New England defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, Carolina defensive head Sean McDermott and Cincinnati offensive coordinator Hue Jackson and defensive coordinator Paul Guenther are also on Cleveland's list, which could grow.

Haslam did not put a timetable on his search, saying it could last two weeks or two months. And despite nearly constant change in Cleveland, Haslam doesn't think the Browns and their issues will scare off quality candidates.

''You look at the Browns' track record and our track record as owner, you go 'Well why in the hell would anybody want to go there?''' Haslam said.

''And the response I get is the same whether it's somebody that's 45 or 75 - unbelievable football town, great fans, don't laugh when I say this but only one way to go but up, plenty of draft picks - we've got 11 draft picks this year - some good young players. I still think this is a very attractive job.''

I think the Browns need to seriously considering interviewing and brining in Lovie Smith.

Smith is a quality Head Coach, he actually got to the Super Bowl with Rex "Freakin" Grossman as his QB...he didn't win but he got to the show.

The Buc's were stupid for getting rid of him, the Bucs were playoff bound next year, Lovie was building a solid program down there.

Lovie is a coach i think the lockeroom responds too, he is also a guy that i guarantee you will fix our putid defense.

I think Lovie Smith would come here, and I also think he would probably be the best HC we have had here since Marty, the guy is a solid coach...if the Browns are willing to give him 3 years Lovie will turn things around here...If he can get to a Super Bowl with Rex Grossman at QB, he can fix the Browns or at the very worst make us competitive week in and week out...

I will be dissapointed if the Browns don't atleast interview him.

Welcome,, with Brady closer to the end of his career than the beginning, If Belichick thinks Jimmy Garrappolo can step into the breach, he's not ever going to trade him, if he thinks he doesn't have the "Right Stuff", I'm not sure I"d want him,

Speaking of QB's, what about Colin Kapernick (sp)

There will be people who would be happy to take Haslam's money for a couple years, just to get the experience as a HC in the NFL.

It is a win/win situation for coordinator types who are looking to build their resume, knowing they most likely are signing up for a temporary job.

All Haslam needs is one guy to say he's ok with Podesta and Sashi in charge of the 53 man roster.

True, that will certainly get us a coach and a guy who is "kind of a GM," but will it get us the top guys or will we settle once again for unproven guys that are really no different than the guys we replaced?

You see...............I have been dead-set against replacing the HC for yet another unproven guy. I understood bringing in a superstar like Saban. That makes sense.

But overhauling another roster w/yet another unproven guy is what we have been doing for decades!!! That isn't different. It's the same old crap.

And what happened to all those continuity chants that I was hearing just a very short time ago? I am not talking directly to you because you were one of the guys getting ripped by the "positive posters" this off-season. I find it funny how quickly they jumped ship and are so excited about our new and exciting approach. rofl

I don't mind the thought of Lovie Smith. He did take that Bears team to the super bowl which is similar to the Seahawks first trip where Defense played a huge role in their success. Although Russell Wilson has proven to be a top QB he wasn't first to be as much then. Lovie coming in our focus would completely shift to the defensive side of the ball which is fine given our "no defense at all approach" says Donovan haha. The main question however is he willing to start another rebuild process or would he rather jump on a better off franchise such as the Giants who have the necessary pieces to compete now. Also does he fit into the analytic side of football that we are going for and is he open to adapting to those ways. A lot of questions but definitely a good thought of at least giving him an interview. He is an established head coach who has proven to build teams up. Side note there is thought Lovie was let go in order to promote their OC Koetter before someone else steals him for a head coaching gig. They wanted to keep Winston and him together for years to come.

Another far stretch proven coach combo that would be enticing but another long shot to land, would be bringing in Tom Coughlin and Ben McAdoo. Yes I know Tom will be 70 by the time next season begins but thats why we get him to bring McAdoo (given Giants don't keep him) to be his successor after Tom serves his time. Another far shot I know but as far as someone who is established I don't know how he wouldn't fit that mold.

I would say that the time for chanting "continuity" ended about 2 1/2 hours after the last game when the owner cleaned house. Any hopes of continuity begins now, with what we have.... unless you think folks should be chanting for us to go into the season without a coach or GM, then in that case, carry on wink

well pretty sure you noticed the total lack of nfl talent on the roster.. i would say it needs a overhaul. as for pettine? well i said it at the end of his first year that i think he is a weak coach. has a hard time developing young talent. and really... letting farmer get away with badgering his staff to the point they demand to be let out of their contract ...

i am in wait and see mode. bottom line is if haslam is the problem then nothing will work.

1st, I would love to bring in Coughlin. My 1st choice would be as President of football operations but that ship has sailed. If he was willing to come in and be the HC that would be awesome and my number one pick. But why would he even consider this job?

2nd, McAdoo coming in would require the Giants to hire a different HC and they would have to fire him. Should that be the case and McAdoo not get a HC job somewhere else, then I could see him going wherever Coughlin goes.

I too was against the blow-up. My initial posts that night and the next day bear that out. But I'm the kind of guy who bounces back reasonably quickly.

I conduct my life as coaches tell football players to do. Take care of what you can and don't concern yourself with things out of your control. It's almost my life's motto. Now there's a lot of prayer about those things I can't control. But no worry. I'm pretty flexible when there's nothing else I can be.

I really hoped Farmer would be replaced with an experienced, old-line GM. That the team would hire a football guy to be in charge of Football Operations. That Pettine would stay so the roster won't get completely turned over and so that he could develop into the job.

I feel the Johnny Manziel was a huge weight on him from day one of the draft until the final game two years later. Every day the issues, the questions, the badgering by the media. I hoped he would get a chance to focus on football.

But here we are. Another reboot. And like you say, highly likely another inexperienced, first-time HC. That part is depressing.

The difference this time though is that it's not just the football guys getting all the blame. The FO is getting their share as well. So that is getting blown up too. This is the first time that has happened. The blame has always been placed squarely on the football guys.

I'm looking forward to understanding what their plan is and how it works out. What other choice do I have? Deep concerns I need to be very vocal about?

I have concerns. Right now is who are we getting as HC. I've been reading a bit, not a lot, about those we're interviewing. I don't know enough about any of them to make an educated guess who could do the job. When you're talking about a coordinator being elevated to HC all you know for sure is he would make a good coordinator. That says nothing about his ability to lead a team, plus, once he is the HC he is diminished as a coordinator because he then has too much on his HC plate.

There's nothing fun about this. But then, there's been nothing fun about the Browns for the past 16 years except the one playoff year with Holcomb and the one year with DA and the half year with Hoyer. The other 13 years are best set aside and forgotten.

I don't see what I have to lose by becoming interested in understanding what is going on.

Of course, the one thing we continually do is reboot, so in a sense this IS continuity.

I just think the fact that he has always been a mess with his mechanics and throwing motion, the fact that he takes some really big hits, and that he struggles reading defenses, combined with the fact that he is starting to suffer significant injuries, all add up to a giant No.

Since 1999, we have fired the following head coaches. (including interim)

Chris Palmer
Butch Davis
Terry Robiske
Romeo Crennel
Eric Mangini
Pat Shurmur
Rob Chudzinski
Mike Pettine

Of these coaches, how many have received a 2nd chance as head coach?

There was a time where teams looked at fired coaches as having a real advantage, because they have been in the top slop, and have learned from their mistakes. That seems to have changed, especially coaches who were not successful their 1st time around.

if you're an up and coming coach, why would you want to be in Cleveland?

Understood.

Some also like to have a chance at turning a team around. Can it be done in 2 years? Because 16 years of history says that's your average timetable in Cleveland.

Needs: QB, (possibly a draft pick that will take 2 years to get up to speed), how many O lineman? Line backers, receivers, d line.......Yeah, we'll def. need someone that likes a challenge.

Butch Davis was a College Head Coach at North Carolina after leaving the Browns.

Romeo Crennel became a Head coach for a second time in Kansas City.. is now Defensive coordinator for the Texans

Pat Shurmer is currently the interim Head coach in Philadelphia.

Palmer, Mangini, and Chud are all coordinators. Robiske is the Wide Receiver's coach of the Falcons.

The answer to your question is 2. Crennel and Shurmer.

well...at least crennel got that defense playing at a high level.

JJ watt certainly helps, but there are 10 other guys that start. nice to see him in the playoffs.

Mangini is gonna be looking for another gig after Tomsula got axed.

Chud...there's a chance he won't be back with the colts next season, however, he did have that offense playing hard seeing as he had to work with hasselbeck and charlie whitehurts the entire time.

shurmur....lol.

and Robiskie has always been a boss WR coach, but not much else.

Former USC HC Steve Sarkisian is putting out feelers to NFL teams and expressing interest in becoming a QB coach or OC, per league sources.

Whoever gets Manziel should also hire Sarkisian. They can keep each other company.
