Interesting, I would have wanted to hear the Giants offer before committing. But hey, maybe Hue likes being in the AFC North and knows the teams and players...specifically us and what our strengths and weaknesses are AND how to fix them.

Let's hope this is official and then we can start raiding the Bengals free agents.

What are the odds of keeping Jim O'Neil once the new coach is hired? I am hoping zero...or has he been fired yet? If not, why?

Merging the "to hire Hue" thread with this one.

We can start a new thread if and when we actually hire him.

I like this hire a lot. HJ was the guy I was hoping they would get, Patricia second.

Good to see the Browns able get their man.

Another positive, Hue has been game planning against our division rivals for the past coupe years.

I like this hire. Jackson was let go too early at Oakland and showed promise.

Former GM Martin Mayhew to interview with Browns

The Browns hired Hue Jackson as their new head coach on Wednesday and they’re now reportedly turning their attention to filling out their front office.

Josina Anderson of ESPN reports that former Lions General Manager Martin Mayhew will interview with the team on Saturday. The Browns fired General Manager Ray Farmer at the end of the regular season with former general counsel Sashi Brown taking over as their executive vice president of football operations and Paul DePodesta being hired as chief strategic officer.

Neither Brown nor DePodesta are “football men” and a hiring on that side for the personnel department has been expected since the other front office moves were announced. With Brown holding control over the 53-man roster, the Browns would have a hard time getting permission to speak to someone already employed by another team which may help Mayhew’s shot at landing a job in Cleveland.

Mayhew interviewed for the Titans’ vacancy at General Manager this month, but word out of Nashville is that Buccaneers director of player personnel Jon Robinson will be getting that job. Mayhew was the General Manager in Detroit from late 2008 until being relieved of his duties last November.

Didn't know he was in DET for that long (2008-2015) but had more hits than misses..

Hits:
Matt Stafford
Cliff Avril
Jerome Felton
Suh
Nick Fairley
Reilly Reiff
Ziggy Ansah
Larry Warford

Misses:
Brandon Pettigrew
Kevin Smith
Titus Young
Ryan Broyles
Dwight Bentley

Gosder Cherilus is in the mix too, not sure if bad or good. Maybe just "meh".

Mayhew also fleeced the Cowboys for a 1st and 3rd round draft pick for WR Roy Williams.

A 1-7 record to start the season didn't help his cause. He was a holdover from the Millen era.

I'd also add Darius Slay to the hits...I wouldn't say Pettigrew is a miss...until this year he was a starting TE for like 6 years I believe...more of a blocker than a playmaker..heck that draft had Jason Smith, Heyward Bey, Aaron Maybin, Peria Perry, Larry English, Robert Ayers as the busts

Gosder was a good RT for many years...age and injuries have caught up to him...but he's still in the league

Titus Young was one of the biggest meltdwons the NFL has ever seen... Heck he even had a fine rookie year until he went nuts

Broyles was a reach as he had the major injury at Oklahoma that needed 2 years of rehabbing...then he was always injured since... That was a miss...Kevin Smith had a crap load of carries at UCF and injuries he flopped like you stated

I could have sworn they drafted other corners whom flopped

IMO, the biggest challenge to this whole organizational structure is the personnel man. We're either looking at guys who aren't employed or taking a stab at a scout hoping he's ready for the next step.

This is a bunch of garbage. Teams won't grant permission to the Browns because they don't want to lose their guy. LOL

It's because it is considered a lateral move....not a promotion.

Right. But they aren't blocking us because they feel bad that their guy won't have control over the 53.

No, they never were and nobody implied that... they're blocking us because they CAN block us due to the fact that the guy won't have control over the 53.

If he would have control of the 53, they wouldn't be able to block us and "asking permission" would be a mere formality.

so they are worried their man would leave for what would amount to a lesser position of power?

Really are they that scared the browns would steal their man... LOL

I fully believe this. No team wants to lose someone that is doing a good job. That's why the league put that rule into place, one team cannot stop another team from interviewing one of their staff if it would be a promotion.

The people being blocked are obviously interested in the position, or we wouldn't be asking permission to talk to them. If they are OK with the new role, then the new role isn't the problem. Their current team is allowed to block the interview, so they do.

"Their current team" is allowed to block the interview because of the role so the new role is the problem.
