I know that I have been one who has stated what you referred to about the WR position.
Just to clarify, I don't think we can find value on a highly talented WR in this draft. It's simply not loaded with top flight talent. I didn't mean to indicate that the WR position should simply be ignored.
I don't believe that Hue will be a "smurf guy". So I do believe we will see a trend of bigger WR's brought in somehow.

Braxton Miller- What do you guys think?
He's a definite project right now, but are his issues correctable?
I was watching Cardale's film again, and Braxton made some crazy plays that Virginia Tech game.
I'm feeling tempted to take him in the 2nd if my D-Linemen don't make it.
Can someone talk me out of it? Or make me feel better about it?

Looks like we'll be welcoming Josh Gordon back with open arm's even though he had a craptastic half season in 2014 and broke his substance abuse parole and took another year off. IMO drafting a WR at #2 shouldn't even be debated here.

Finally got around to watching cutup of Josh Doctson. I really want him with the #32 pick. Assuming we go Qb at #2. If we go other than Qb at #2 then Qb comes into play at #32 if one of the top 4 guys should happen to fall.
This seems to magically get open and has tremendous hands. Not blazing fast. Ran a 4.5 something at the combine but give me a guy with great hands over a speedster who drops the ball any day.

The speedster ingredient isn't nearly as important as crisp route running. Getting in and out of your breaks and running crisp routes are key.

And what I saw of Doctson (one game), he seems quite fluid in and out of his breaks

Miller scares me...he has high character, but he dropped some balls at combine AND wasn't near as fast as I thought he'd be....after taking QB at 2, I think better value on defense line...GO Browns!!!

I would not take Miller before 4th round
WR's at Combine looked like garbage. Treadwell looked smooth but a lot of plodders, dropped passes, etc

Man that was disappointing . I have been watching this stupid Combine all weekend because I have no life. One burner that I remember, the kid from ND. Thomas from OSU looked to have good hands. Might make a nice #2 if Gordon doesn't screw up again. Miller dropped about everything thrown to him. Can't remember Zeke's 40 times but they weren't great.

I will say I was advocating using our second overall pick on a WR, but after watching the combine - there's really no one that I'd like to see drafted high. I mean the drills, the horrible 40 yard dash times and just etc... Yikes.

I don't think any of the WRs are worth the second overall pick, but it's a mistake to put too much importance on the Combine workouts.
I really think the interviews are more important. The on-field stuff should really just be used to confirm prior evaluations and maybe look for something that blatantly stands out.

Give me Tyler Boyd.. Dude is a beast. Kinda glad he ran poorly at combine. Could drop to the 3rd round now.

I don't know if it was all a waste. 2 guys caught my eye; Josh Doctson and Tajae Sharpe. I will be looking at cutup on both.

We had our chance to draft some very good wr's the last 2 years but because we had a "thick head " for a GM who thought he was smarter than everyone else we're left very thin at that position. Hopefully JG can return to form and we can find someone in this draft.

Yes, but there weren't an abundance of WRs I thought were worthy of higher picks to begin with, then the combine results hit. Not having signed Travis yet, and the fact that Sashi is open to giving Gordon a roster spot back and this kind of "weaker" draft class at WR - I'm not feeling too comfortable about it all right now. Not whatsoever.

I think the combine proves that both Doctson and Coleman are safer picks at the top of the 2nd. Well, Coleman, looks promising.

btw...I like Cajuste...he is smart, runs good routes has good hands and would be an asset in the Red Zone we can call him a WR but we would use him as the Pass catching TE miss matches for the Red Zone - putting him in slot or on the outside, in motions. I really like his hands. Figure around 4th round or later?
One other WR NOBODY is talking about (except maybe a poster on this board...lol didn't read them all) He wasn't invited to the Combine I think he is as good as anyone in this draft and we probably could get him in the 6th or 7th rounds. I don't understand at all why he is not given any respect? Did he rob a bank...do drugs, beat his girlfriend???
Canaan Severin - Looks better than a MoMass or Quincy Morgan from the past investments.
Here is a video (only one on him) from Notre Dame game. http://draftbreakdown.com/video/canaan-severin-vs-notre-dame-2015-2/

That'd be a solid to great WR core for any QB..

I would take him later and not look back. He is very raw, but this coaching staff is maybe a great fit; I think he can be deadly in the open field. Like him a lot. Hope we pick up several Buckeyes.

The thread in the Pure Football forum asking about weapons for RG3 got my attention.
Somebody mentioned taking WRs high as a way of improving the supporting cast. I recall half-watching a segment on NFL Network last week. Talking about the Steelers and what they might do to address the lost of Bryant. It boiled down to this. The Steelers typically take a value approach to the WR position. Antonio Brown was taken in the 6th, Bryant in the 4th and Wheaton in the 3rd when drafted. This year isn't a great WR draft class. I think the better value might be found in the 4-6th round area. Names would include: Mitchell of UGA, Peake of Clemson, Lawler of Cal, Sharpe of UMass or Robinson of Florida if you can stomach the risk.

EO, I think you're on to something with the Canaan Severin kid. Don't understand why he's generated so little attention. No post-season all star appearance. No combine invite. Anyway, I stumbled on to this site which ranks several receiver categories. I don't pretend to know their metric but he is definitely all over their numbers!

MartavisBryant was a borderline first round talent. That's how I ranked him coming out and posted on here. My guess is the reason he fell is the reason he won't be playing this season.
Also, Wheaton is OK but third round was about right for him. He wouldn't be squat without Brown on the other side and Ben throwing him the ball.
Brown was a great pickup in the sixth but honestly the brass lucked out. Maybe an area scout responsible for the MAC thought he'd be that good but if they thought he would be a top 5 receiver they wouldn't have waited until the sixth round to draft him. He was drafted to be a complementary piece to Mike Wallce along with Sanders.
That's not a strategy, they just picked the right player late. If anything, it's the same strategy we used the last two years.

Anyway, I stumbled on to this site which ranks several receiver categories. I don't pretend to know their metric but he is definitely all over their numbers! Canaan Severin - has Cycle Cell anemia - so that he can become exhausted during a game. So what...its a rotational position you watch him close and if he needs a blow you bring him out.
I saw one film Notre Dame game in 2015. Probably the best game any WR had in 2015. He played almost every Rep and was just as fresh in the end as the beginning. ND Defense was good Virginia's entire offense was just throw the ball up and let Canaan get it.
Thanks for the site I'm going to check it out. Again this isn't a surgery thing that needs a year to mend. He can play day one. Just got to be careful on stamina stuff. Wonder also if we can get permission from the NFL to oblige him with a Transfusion prior to the games. jmho

Thanks Clevesteve...that was the tape I saw and I'm like - huh? why is not this guy being talked about. No Senior Bowl Invite no Combine invite.
btw that thing with the helmet on the sidelines...the defender poked him in the eye.
So those stat links...so by Matrix numbers he is the top WR in this draft. Wonder what he ran in his pro day???
somebody is going to have a steal with this kid. As I said worth a 6th 7th rounder! jmho

Laquon Treadwell generates relatively slow 40-yard dashes Posted by Mike Florio on March 28, 2016, 12:33 PM EDT At the Scouting Combine in February, Mississippi receiver Laquon Treadwell chose not to run the 40-yard dash. On Monday, he ran. And he didn’t generate the kind of times that will cause him to rocket up the board. Treadwell ran, officially, a 4.63-second and 4.65-second 40-yard dash at his Pro Day workout. That’s still faster than Anquan Boldin’s 4.72-second 40-yard dash from 2003, and it’s one of the reasons why he slid all the way to pick No. 54. But that won’t be nearly enough to get Treadwell taken near the top of the 2016 draft. Scouts and General Managers have a bit of a CYA streak, and if a fast guy busts they can at least tell the owner that the guy was fast. When a slow guy busts, there’s no safe harbor. Which means that someone with a secure situation and a need at receiver could end up with a very good receiver. Or at least won’t have to worry about being fired if Treadwell doesn’t end up being any good. That’s how the 40-yard dash, which means little when it comes to predicting football success, has real significance to the draft process.

The more I look at this its best to sit tight early on regarding the WR position...they look like they are going to drop. The kid from OSU Thomas? seems to be the only one on the rise.
Sit pat and 3rd...maybe even 4th round is where the value on the position is!

The last time I pimped a WR was Jordan Matthews in the 2nd round. As a matter of fact, he's the only WR I pimped in what seems like forever! lol
I'm with you about this WR class. If by some leap of faith Josh Doctson would fall to #32, I wouldn't be opposed to us taking him, but it wouldn't be a favorite pick of mine and certainly not something I would advocate.
We're certainly on the same page here Tab.

With the way the NFL is currently officiated it seems easier and easier for WRs to have success and have an impact on an offense
My current list of WRs in order would be:
WR-Josh Doctsun, Corey Coleman, Sterling Shephard, Laquan Treadwell, Tyler Boyd, Rashard Higgins
I really like Shephard though, me reminds me of Steve Smith meets Julian Edelman

Pit and I agree... Pit and I agree...lol
I've always stated (never pimped too much) that if the WR is BPA on our board. I'm all for it.
Probably the guy I pimped the most was Blackmon if that is pimping I have no clue about these guys private lives.
I really really like the kid Canaan Severin, I think he can inspire a lot of football players on this team as he works hard!
Cajuste is perfect for what we need in the Red Zone we would be a better WR unit if we end up with both.

It does look better if Gordon gets reinstated. I want to see how Pryor looks in year 2 at receiver as well.
Hopefully Moore and Jennings are primarily used on special teams this season.
Weren't you high-ish on Hall?
I'd prefer Doctson and Treadwell of your bolded WRs, but I think they'll go higher than I'd like to pick them. At the top of Rd. 2, that'd be tough, though if the fringe 1st round trench players I like are gone I'd probably run either one's name up to the podium.

I would be thrilled if we land Treadwell as I believe he is the 2nd best player in the draft behind his teammate Tunsil. Trade down add a little extra take this kid and never look back.
You cant trust Gordon to even be there on opening day. Pryor had what one catch last year? hartline is a 2 at best but more like a #3 option. Hawkins is high paid camp fodder.
come away with those first three picks after that lovely trade down and get me Treadwell, Lynch and Vernon butler.

I don't think we could trade down very far. San Diego is a dark horse to take him. If Bosa, Jack, and Ramsey are gone when Baltimore picks they could definitely take him. Giants.

The NFL is already vioating their own guideline of responding to reinstatement requests of 60 days because they are still butthurt about Gordon leaking the test results and making them look like Draconian jerkwads. Even if Gordon is reinstated, he is in the last yea of his deal then becomes an RFA, and you can bet the team would rather get a 1st or 2nd round pick for him than re-sign him to a big contract unless they are 100% convinced he has turned it around. I don't think Gordon is in the team's long-term plans. I like Hall as a contributor but he's not a difference maker. Great pickup off the scrap heap I think but I'd much rather have Treadwell, Doctson, Coleman out there.

The drug policy does not say that a decision will be made within 60 days. It says: "All individuals involved in the process will take steps to enable the Commissioner to render a decision within 60 days of the receipt of the application." As far as I can see, there is nothing that says that the Commissioner has to make a decision within 60 days. Here is the whole "Procedures for Reinstatement Following Stage Three Banishment" https://nflpaweb.blob.core.windows.net/media/Default/PDFs/Player Development/2015 Policy and Program on Substances of Abuse.pdf https://nflpaweb.blob.core.windows.net/m...0of%20Abuse.pdfAny Player who has been banished under Stage Three may apply formally in writing for reinstatement no sooner than 60 days before the one-year anniversary date of the letter so banishing him. The application should include all pertinent information about the Player’s: (a) Treatment; (b) Abstinence from Substances of Abuse throughout the entire period of his banishment; (c) Involvement with any Substances of Abuse related incidents; and (d) Arrests and/or convictions for any criminal activity, including Substances of Abuse-related offenses. Set forth below are the procedures to be used when an application is received by the Commissioner. 1. Within 45 days of receipt of the application, the Player will be interviewed by the Medical Director and the Medical Advisor, after which a recommendation will be made to the Commissioner with regard to the Player’s request for reinstatement. 2. The Player will execute appropriate medical release forms that will enable the Commissioner’s staff and NFLPA Executive Director’s staff to review the Player’s substance abuse history, including but not limited to attendance at counseling sessions (individual, group and family); attendance at 12-step and other self-help group meetings; periodic progress reports; and all diagnostic findings and treatment recommendations. 3. The Player will submit to urine testing by an NFL representative at a frequency determined by the Medical Advisor. 4. The Player will agree in a meeting with the Commissioner or his representative(s) to comply with the conditions imposed by the Commissioner for his reinstatement to the status of an active Player. 5. All individuals involved in the process will take steps to enable the Commissioner to render a decision within 60 days of the receipt of the application.
