Anyway you slice it and dice it, Mingo at 240lbs or 260lbs means little production as he is just too damn stupid to play in this league!
He shows almost no instincts and constantly over pursues and fails to hold his territory.
I will be shocked if Mingo is anything more than another in a long line of 1st round draft busts for the Cleveland Browns.
But drink the koolaid if you will
I wouldn't say Mingo is to stupid to be in the league, but I would say he lacks true football instincts to be a impact player.Even though he has the speed and athleticism to be a impact player

I think Mingo just burned his speed away truthfully, we can only hope that with the new size, comes new strength and power if we still think of him as an attack linebacker.
If not, then he may have ruined his coverage ability with the lack of speed, which was something he honestly excelled at.
I wondered this as well. Putting on that kind of weight ... what would it do to his speed and athleticism?
Has that helped him to this point?
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.
I wanted Mingo SO BAD the night of the draft and was ecstatic when Banner selected him. As athletic as he is, he just never could balance that out against his strength/size (or lack thereof). He got pushed around rather easily and is athleticism never really leveraged much. Coupled with the fact I don't know how many times he took for worst angles I've EVER seen on the Browns team, I think that's why some people think he's "stupid". I don't think he's stupid, but late to react maybe? lacking instincts? Perhaps. I don't think he was much of a tackler, but that could be a byproduct of his size?
I have the smallest ray of hope with Mingo this year because of his athleticism....but it ain't much. As of today, at looks like it'll be Orchard v Mingo opposite Kruger. Not saying I'm a die hard Orchard fan, but I lean towards him at this point.
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

+1.. I wonder if Orchard could be moved to the inside... just thinking
I think I did a post close before the draft. Beckoning Lombardi to make any pick but OLB...lol Basing it on his history of OLB picks in the past.
You could imagine my after the pick was made. But I've been backing him all along. My only disappointment (major) is that he decides to add the 20lbs now...when he was asked to by Horton & Pettine - every year of his NFL career to add the weight.

I agree. I expected far better far sooner than he has provided. One instinct is fine, and it kills him. He and Kruger jump inside and take themselves out of plays. That coupled weigh the coverage use called for in that lame defense last year, coupled with his lousy edge work helped us get torched when ever teams needed it against us.
So he is now ready to produce? I was ready a few seasons back! Personally, I hate whining and media complaining with agents in it. Not a victim, Mingo. Play better and see more field. So far he has shown all the variety and diversity of Courtney Brown. Just not enough of a bad man tho be a corner enforcer. Go ahead. Light it up and make me cheer. Horton can get more out of him maybe. Agents, stay out of it.

IMHO speed and athleticism are his only assets. While not making him a star I can't see losing your only assets as a good thing.
Similar to the team losing Mack and Schwartz. We weren't good with them, but doesn't mean losing them is a good thing.

I don't think he'd be able to cover like he does without it. And, thus far, his coverage ability was/maybe still is/maybe not anymore his only category for production or reasons to have him play any snaps.

It's really a make or break year for Mingo.
I'm behind on this, but isn't this his final year under his rookie contract?

No reason to at all imo. I definitely am interested in Mingo +20 lbs. I know I'm ripping him, but seriously he could of went from peanut to monster depending on the effects. It's something we all should be keeping an eye once things start rolling.
He and Kruger jump inside and take themselves out of plays.
Hey Bard.......a big part of that is because that is what Pet/O'Neil taught their outside guys to do.

We addressed this earlier in the thread, but the title of this thread is misleading. Mingo and his agent were asked questions. They were not complaining.
Gaining mass has been an issue for Barkevious Mingo ever since the Browns made him their first round pick in 2013.
The pass rusher was especially invisible last season, starting just two games, failing to record a sack and finishing the year at just 227 pounds.
The Browns listed him at 240, but that was always a myth -- until now.
As Tom Reed of Cleveland.com reported this week, Mingo used his offseason to pile on weight and muscle, showing up to a Browns press conference this week looking like a new man.
"It's not important," Mingo said, when asked how much he weighed, but the player's agent, Rick Roberts, told Reed that the former LSU star is up to 251 pounds after following an unorthodox training regimen.
In February, Mingo voyaged to suburban Dallas to train with Vickie Gates, a former world-class body builder of more than 20 years. Now 53, Gates has worked with a number of draft prospects and believed she could do the same for the Browns defender.
Moving Mingo into her home, the ex-body sculptor enlisted the pass rusher on a two-a-day regimen of cardio and weight training, while fueling him with a whopping 5,892 calories per day.
Between workouts, Roberts had Mingo feast on a breakfast menu that, per Reed, "featured grits, biscuits, eggs, sausage and the occasional pancake. Lunches and dinners consisted of combinations of baked potatoes, rice, chicken, beef, lasagna and a vegetable."
In between meals, Mingo ate peanut butter sandwiches and also helped Roberts' grandchildren with their homework.
"He's a very easy-going person," said Gates. "He made it work. He ate what he was supposed to eat. He made my job very easy."
Roberts was stunned with the results, saying: "When I saw it, I almost had a heart attack. I couldn't believe the difference."
Said Mingo: "Honestly, this whole offseason my main focus was getting bigger. Bigger, faster, stronger, and just coming into the building, coming into the workouts bigger, faster, stronger."
After being dangled as trade bait last year, Mingo is hoping the weight gain will help recharge a career that could see him playing elsewhere in 2017 if he doesn't turn it on come September. He's certainly done the work to make that happen.
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."
I am so glad that he is working hard to show he can play like a #6 pick ...

I am so glad that he is working hard to show he can play like a #6 pick ...
A number 6 pick gets sacks and lots of them. That's where you take guys like JJ Watt and Von Miller. I'll believe he can be that when I see it. I couldn't care less about his pass coverage. At his position in THIS defense he is supposed to KILL quarterbacks. Something to this point he has been spectacularly BAD at. Hell Wimbly was a better pass rusher.
I'd be thrilled if he could just be a solid backup at this point. Maybe move inside and backup a REAL linebacker.
As of now Mingo is just as big a bust as Dilbert production wise. At least he isn't a headcase though. He's got a LONG LONG LONG way to go to even be mediocre.

Not even close.
Mingo has not been the pass rusher he was drafted to be, but he has been effective as a coverage LB.

He finally did something about it. I sort of am upset that he waited till his "CONTRACT YEAR" to actually do what every coach asked him to do.
I expect him to leave next year to the highest bidder. Obviously its about the money...of course their take on it was he got mad that he did so poorly last year and was 227 not 240. I'm guessing its about the 2nd contract!

M.I.N.G.O., M.I.N.G.O. AND Mingo was his name oh!!!
I don't care exactly how much he weighs. His agent might be blowing smoke about 251, but I think it's good that he gained weight and muscle mass.
Mingo has one thing that no other guy on the Brown's front seven has, and that is explosion off the ball. I think he is the ONE guy that really stands out as being misused by Pet.
This is a do or die year for Mingo. Hope he steps up.
j/c I have always had a sense that he was playing well below his listed weight. I didnt care at first because I just wanted him to gain the edge and get sacks. Now it seems our prior regime grossly overrated his abilty to add weight, and his desire to do so. I think Mingo is a good guy and has played with heart, but a HUGE pissed away reach at the position he was drated. Kind of funny in a contract year how these guys seem to understand what it takes to be a PRO. Good luck Barkevious and I hope you keep the weight and our NEW but old system fits your skill set better, however I am skeptical.
I'm willing to give him another chance with this coaching staff. I think with all the scheme changes he didn't know what to do. If they want him to be a pass rusher first and he works at it I think the talent is there to succeed. Some of it is on him, he has to want to be good.
Kind of funny in a contract year how these guys seem to understand what it takes to be a PRO.
I don't think that is the case w/Mingo. That's the second time I saw that comment, but I don't see how it applies to him. There are a couple of reasons:
--Mingo has always said to be a hard worker who does what he coaches ask him to do. He never complained about his role. How many guys who were picked that high would not complain while being asked to drop in coverage and not be allowed to do what they do best?
--It's one thing to question a guy who all of a sudden loses weight in a contract year. But, to gain weight? I would bet that the previous coaching staff didn't want him to get too heavy. I forget who the color commentator was who remarked about how Dansby looked like a shadow of himself because he had lost so much weight? He then went on to say that Dansby told him the coaching staff had asked him to lose all that weight to fit in w/their scheme. Considering both guys were heavily utilized in pass coverage, I would assume the coaching staff didn't have a problem w/Mingo being light.
I won't forget how Mingo played with one arm most of a season. He also never bitched when his role was changed. He is not a superstar, but he is the kind of guy you can win with if he puts it together and Horton plays him right. You should not compare him to Gilbert. Not fair at all.
Like many players Mingo got to the NFL because of a physical advantage. That advatange could be speed, quickness, size, fluidity something that sets a player apart from his peers. When they get to the NFL that advantage is greatly reduced and in many cases completey eliminated, that is when the mental aspects, the techniques of a position need to set in.
Those that have relied so much on the physical advantage never take the time ( or effort) to learn the mental aspects, that is where coaching comes in and that is where organizations like the Browns have failed.
Constant changes in coaching staffs and as an extension, the continual changes in schemes, responsibilities of the player, positions and teaching methods greatly retard the growth of players like Mingo ( also read Shelton and Erving).
Its not lack of ability of the coaches it's lack of opportunity for them to coach / teach said players. And of course it also depends on the ability of the player to learn, some never do even when given the opportunity, that is a given.
In Mingo's first year he was constantly too far up field and when basically running himself out of the plays, it used to drive me crazy, In college he had the speed and quickness to make up for being out of position, in the NFL not so much. This past year he still seems to take bad angles, get caught up too easily in traffic and not explode into tackles. That said he does have a nice base, good pad level and displays good quickness.
His deficiencies IMO can be coached up; if he is ever afforded some consistent coaching, I think he has the desire, I think he has the physical tools he just to be a system long enough where to can allow what he has learned to work more in unison with his instincts.
I don't think that is the case w/Mingo. That's the second time I saw that comment, but I don't see how it applies to him. There are a couple of reasons:
I know that would be me...as I mentioned. Its not that complicated. No where do I think he's not a hard worker. Actually I love the way he has become a good coverage guy...of course we need the pass rush!
Its because when drafted it was said by our coaches that he needed to gain weight. When Pettine was hired and they said how much they loved Mingo...but he needed to gain weight. After the first season with Pettine...it was said he needed to gain weight. Of course which also means get stronger but be able to contain the edge...able to Bull Rush effectively.
I said what I said and it doesn't take a rocket scientist. Mingo is a smart guy. All of a sudden he took the measures to Gain weight (Muscle Mass not fat) and we are to believe its just a revelation that came to him?
You are correct he has great explosion what I deem a very important trait for LB...why I like Kirksey also.
I didn't dis his aptitude or suggest he was used correctly last season. He is coachable, I think he is football smart also. It is an undeniable fact though. Every year every Coach said he needed to add weight in the off season and he did not. We know they all get a program, nutritionist and conditioning related. Can we also assume Mingo got one to gain some body mass? But I just don't believe in coincidences. That all of a sudden the light turns on and he went and did something about it. For his contract year.
I like it cause we should get a good product out there. I don't like it cause more than likely we will not over pay for his services if he has a breakout season. Can't say 100% just educated guessing.
Please lets have a good back and forth...no egos no insults...just football. Its ok if you don't like me. I don't mind at all. I do enjoy talking football with you.
as always jmho

Mingo was never asked to gain weight last year. They wanted him lighter because they were afraid he might lose some speed if he added extra weight, and they planned on using him in coverage, not as a pass rusher, or run stopper.

Thanks GM...my bad and can I assume that was our wonderful DC O'Neil??? I am pretty sure when they came here in 2014 assessing our team and really liking him they did state he needed to get bigger.
First I'm hearing of the stay light last season. Was that in the off season? or after the season started and they used him a lot in coverage? But I stand corrected.
Vers...I guess I was wrong, no reason to answer now...It wasn't a coincidence just not the direction I was thinking.
Although his first two seasons I wish he had done something in that area.

He is also one of only a few guys who would play an entire season with an injury that would have shut most players down for the entire season. He cared more about playing and trying to help the team, than he did about making himself look bad. He has a good attitude,, and he puts the team first. Now lets just hope it shows up in his production this year.
I don't care exactly how much he weighs. His agent might be blowing smoke about 251, but I think it's good that he gained weight and muscle mass.
He is at 250 Vers. Now we will see if he can maintain that weight during Camp, and during the season, AND if he can use the added strength to his advantage or not?
Thanks bro. I'm rooting for the guy, partly because he keeps his mouth shut, has a good attitude, and takes a lot of grief on this board.........but mostly because it would really help the team to have a good pass rusher.
