Kruger also had his best year (2014) when O'Neill was our DC. Regardless, he hasn't lived up to the contract. Perhaps that changes this year...

maybe it was scheme, fit, personnel, or something else, but our OLB were worst than I can ever remember under Pettine

Pettine was in full control of the defense that year. I have no idea if that's true, although that has been the narrative around here.

Pettine was in full control of the defense that year. That's what he said he was going to do and then the following year, he said he felt comfortable with O'Niell and decided he'd spend more time on Offense.

It's offical: 'Browns shut Desmond Bryant down for the season'http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/07/28/browns-shut-desmond-bryant-down-for-the-season/Posted by Darin Gantt on July 28, 2016, 4:13 PM EDT Browns defensive lineman Desmond Bryant was holding out hope, though there never really was that much to begin with. The team announced Thursday that he was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list, officially ending his season. They signed tight end David Reaves to fill his roster spot. Bryant initially said he hoped to return by the end of the season, saying he was “absolutely hopeful” even after tearing his pectoral muscle while lifting weights. But the reality of a four- to six-month rehab meant that was never likely, and now the Browns will have to adjust without their 2015 sack leader.

What do season long injuries, season ending like this one is, do to a contract year or multiple year, say later in a 3 year. Healthy, this guy can help us.

Seems like a poor PR move if they do this ... unless they know he wasn't forthcoming with his injury (and can prove it)

so is there precedent in the NFL for teams to void a contract? I don't think I've heard of that if a player is just lifting on his own

I would think that such a tact would make the team less attractive to players down the road.
Every player today works out in the off-season. Why would a team punish them for trying to make themselves into a better player?

Even though many of these guys work out on their own, I'd imagine that the team would have some kind of guidelines and/or prohibitions? If that is the case, maybe he didn't get injured overdoing it but rather doing something he wasn't supposed to?

Has to be more to it. I've never heard of a FO not paying a contract under these circumstances

Either the team knew Bryant wasn't injured the way he says he was, the report is false, or Bryant did something immoral/illegal

Yeah, there absolutely has to be more to it then this.
Maybe he has certain activities forbidden by his contract .. like riding a motorcycle, or skydiving, or something ..... and they have evidence that he did a forbidden activity, and that's how he got hurt.

I remember the motorcycle thing being a hot topic issue with Winslow. The FO still paid him as a sign of good faith and PR. Not saying Bryant did anything similar, but if so, this FO might not have the same good faith

interesting.. y would the team even let this out? must have been the agent. Perhaps this is "y:" Now, Cleveland is facing a decision for the future of the franchise, and are trying to make the best business decision while still maintaining a perceived level of good faith. Bryant is under contract through 2017, but given his age and his $7 million salary next year, it was already under question whether he’d remain with the club. Coming off of a torn pectoral and that salary? It seems very unlikely the Browns would keep him. If he’s not in the cards for the future, why not just save as much money as possible and not pay him any of his $6 million for 2016? http://www.dawgsbynature.com/2016/8/10/1...-bryants-salary

yeah. His contract is crazy for the amount of production and injuries that he's had/have.
-I dont know if anyone watches the show Ballers (HBO), but there was a similar situation where a player actually got hurt during the offseason while playing paintball with friends. Season ending injury, and his agents were trying to debate whether to admit it or say it was related to working out. So funny that the same week the show is televised, this happens.
But anyway, for money sake, I'm good letting Bryant go. Save the dough.

Playing paintball is vastly different from lifting weights. But yeah, blame the player.
And not paying him would not be such a good idea. It furthers the perception that the Browns are cheap and more worried about money than their players/winning.

I'm pretty sure the Browns will end up paying, but it probably won't be the full amount. It would be a huge PR nightmare (like some have already said) if we ended up not paying him at all...trying to attract future FAs could end up being a real issue. Whatever happens, I think Bryant has played his last down in Cleveland. If they had plans for him, this would never have been brought up.
Again, like others have said, it's very curious Bryant recently switched agents. Rosenhaus knows how to work the media to his client's advantage...there isn't really any doubt in my mind he's the one that leaked the story.

I'm not surprised to hear that the Browns are contemplating "not paying" Bryant and I believe it would damage the Browns chances of signing future FAs if Haslam follows through.
If there is one written request from coaches, trainers or anyone of authority in the Browns organization, that suggests that players use their down time after the season, to workout and get better physically...I believe it would make the Browns look real bad if they do not pay Bryant.

The organization told the press that the characters injury was "off the field workout related" instead of telling the truth... So I mean you really never know.

Some precedence apparently: One league source said most teams do not pay players who are on the reserve/non-football list --where Bryant landed on July 28th — their full salaries. Another estimated that one team in 20 would pay the entire salary. Some don't pay at all and others settle for a fraction. http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2016/08/desmond_bryant_on_the_browns_p.html#incart_m-rpt-1 (Full Article)

Agreed. I'd like to make us a hot destination, or at least keep us as a place where players want to re-sign. At this point, we're better off paying the guy. When did we find out about this injury, and when would we have? I mean, could he have just stepped on the field, called it a freak injury, and pulled a LeCharles Bentley?

JMHO, article indicated many teams DON'T pay, some DO, most are somewhere in middle....we don't know the facts- where is the line, should players pay for insurance so they get a check (personal responsibility-my choice), should team pay- I'd think some, but not much/less than million....AND with youth movement he could be cut...NFL...Not For Long....GO Browns!!!

The PR aspect sucks, but he is paid to play, and he can't. He wasn't hurt on the job, so I'm not sure how injury guarantees work or if they were even in his contract.
I've liked Des since he's been here, but he's not getting any younger and a torn pec for a guy whose job is to bang in the trenches every play is probably going to be rough to come back from. I could see an injury settlement in his future. It is definitely unfortunate, but it is what it is.
