Maybe it's just me, but Des has "seemed" to be injured an awful lot with us. Whether that's the case or not, I don't know.

He has been injured a few times (but played through it in some cases) plus had a heart condition to deal with that cost him games.

Forgot about the heart deal. Thanks

Funny thing. If a player comes into camp out of shape, the team lets it be known and they aren't happy with the player. The fans question his determination and loyalty.

If a player does his best to stay in shape as is hoped for, and somehow gets hurt in the process, many say that he should get a fraction of his salary or none at all.

Seems like the player is damned no matter what he does.

Yeah, it's a tough situation, especially with the huge emphasis on pushing your body to the limit

Bryant is under contract through 2017, but given his age and his $7 million salary next year, it was already under question whether he’d remain with the club.

Whether they pay him or not, it's certainly worth discussing.

I wonder if this is not so much about this years salary but a buyout situation, Bryant will be 31 in a few months (DEC.), been injury prone, and he only has 2 years left on his contract.

Next year's contract is just as big of an issue I'd assume. If they want him next year, pay him. But that's an awful lot of commitment to a guy that is 50% chance to play (and effectively)

I am sure they will just work out an injury settlement and release for Bryant. this is only news because of his agent making it news.

That's why I think it might be a buyout, the Browns say will give you this amount and we'll go our separate ways.

I'd agree 100% ... give him some of the contract, then cut ties

He should be punished for trying to stay in top shape during the off season. You know.....

Funny thing is people taking sides on an issue without all the information.... but, it is a message board, it's what we do, hehe.
There is, I think, very clearly more to this than is being reported.

Hate to see the team equate 'moneyball' with being insensitively cheap. Pay the man. You're not gonna spend his cap savings, and you can only carry a fraction of the remainder into next season. It's funny how teams want people to buy into the programs, but these teams are never as quick to buy into the player. smh

...The one could potentially contribute this year. The other can't.

Josh is making 1 million this season and will be an RFA next.

Bryant is making 7 million this season and is scheduled to make 8 million next. His contract was set up to have little dead money if he was cut this or next season. He's been injury prone and is over 30.

I like Bryant, but he hasn't been living up to his contract.

Even with his missed time, Gordon has still been a relative bargain.

Cutting Bryant saves us 12 or 13 million over the next two years. He most likely won't be able to play at a level worthy of that kind of money.

The NFL is a cut throat business.

We will be drafting even more d-linemen in next years draft.. Bryant will be a year older and can't contribute at all this year... whats the point of keeping him?

I don't think they will, bro. They aren't that stupid. My wrath has been reserved for the dumb arguments some posters are making to protect anything and everything the FO does.

I do think they might want to work this so they can bring him back at a lower salary next year. Not sure how that works, but it just makes sense.

Seems weird to splash the story or leak it publicly while keeping details hush-hush. Tail wants to wag the dog, but only so much leverage. Smells fishy. Is this a clawback deal?

Desmond Bryant, Browns agree to new contract after summer injury

BEREA, Ohio -- Defensive lineman Desmond Bryant and the Cleveland Browns have agreed to a new contract as a result of him tearing a pectoral muscle working out on his own before the season.

ESPN Insider Field Yates reports via a league source that the Browns will pay Bryant $1.25 million this season while he is on the non-football injury list. He had been due to make $6 million.

The Browns did not have to pay Bryant at all because his injury happened when he was working out in New York before training camp. He will miss the entire season, but will make more than $1 million while injured.

In 2017, Bryant will take a cut from $7 million to $3 million (non-guaranteed), but the contract is structured so that he can recoup the entire $4 million he lost via incentives, Yates reports.

Bryant signed with the Browns as a free agent prior to the 2013 season.

To me another example of this FO doing a remarkably good job. Brant and the Browns win. Great job.

I'm not sure how this is a great move for Bryant, outside of getting some money this year.

I think this is a great deal for the organization.

You think Bryant would sign that contract if it was not also a good deal for him ???? Why would he do that.

Does the deal mean he is worse off than before Bryant was injured ... sure. But that's not a fair or relevant comparison.

I'm no injury expert but maybe the concern with the Bryant camp is the extent of his pec injury and if he'll ever see a contract again? He can recoup $1.5M and if he the team doesn't think he's better, then at least he got something. And since 2017 is completely non-guaranteed, his return may also he a concern of the Browns.

This just looks like the injury settlement we all talked about just in a different format -- if the Browns are overly pleased with his recovery, they'll control him.

Because he was injured working out on his own, not in a team activity, (and perhaps even doing something not allowed by his contract) the Browns could have cut him, and he would have received nothing this year. He then would hit the market as a 31 year old DE, who missed the whole year with an injury, and who also had a heart issue (I believe it was his heart) a couple of years ago. This deal gets him into an off-season program, and at least gives him a shot at more than a vet minimum contract next year. It also gives him the incentives, that could allow him to make back what he lost.

It's definitely a big win for Bryant, and the Browns are protected if their young DL really comes through, and/or if Bryant can't make a complete comeback.

It just doesn't look like a 'win' to me unless you mean the earlier expectation of an injury settlement is a win. If that's the case, I'll agree. It looks like an injury settlement in favor of Cleveland should he recover well. They'll control him at half the money it would have cost them next year...while being completely one-sided should Bryant not fully recover as none of it is guaranteed. The fact none of it is guaranteed is an interesting component to me. But maybe it's irrelevant considering what is former contract looked like in 2017. I didn't check.

I think the pec injury for a DL is a very serious thing and perhaps the pay cut in 2017 plus none of it being guaranteed is something both entities recognized? -- I don't know.

I'm not saying it's bad for Bryant...he's clearly getting something. I just think it heavily favors the organization.
