Perkins, Ricard released
Jeff Walcoff, Staff Writer
06.14.2007

Antonio Perkins, a fourth-round pick by the Browns in 2005, was among four players released by the club Thursday on the final day of full-squad minicamp.

Perkins appeared insix games for the Browns during two seasons in the NFL, including five in '06. During those games he managed a pair of special teams tackles and returned 3 kicks for 82 yards.

Fullback Alan Ricard also was among those released Thursday. The former Baltimore Raven signed with the Browns on April 16 after spending the '06 season out of football.

Ricard was the lead blocker for now-Browns running back Jamal Lewis during his 2,066-yard season for the Ravens in 2003, but has appeared in only a pair of games during the past two NFL seasons.

The team had hoped to reunite Ricard with Lewis in the Browns backfield in '07. Now, the club will depend on '06 sixth-round pick Lawrence Vickers at the position, as well as promising rookie Charles Ali.

Rookie free agent offensive linemen Brent Pousson (McNeese State) and Scott Stephenson (Iowa State) also were released.

No real surprise on Perkins. If the kid could get on the field last year....he was a lost cause.

Never really paid any attendion to the Baltimore fullback, so i don't mind much at all. Like Vickers. I like FB's that are aslo a threat with the ball in short yardage or out of the back field receptions. Didn't we have a good pass catching FB in like '99 or '00? I can't recall a name right now. If it comes to me I'll edit unless one of you beats me to it.

Edit: ah haaa Marc Edwards, FB Notre Dame. thats the guy I was thinking of. If memory serves he had a few TD catches, and back then, well now too, those weren't easy to come by.

Question, what makes this rookie, Ali, so promising? anyone know anything about him?

Ali, Charles. 6-2, 260 lbs, FB who was an undrafted FA signed.
Out of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Sounds like he's strictly a blocker. But, a very tough one. Hope he beats the odds and makes his dream come true.

Did we pick up some mammoth tackle from Morgan State? I didn't and don't expect him to make our roster, but his size was ridiculous.

Cliff Louis would appear to be who you are talking about. 6'8" 300lbs. out of Morgan State.

That would be arron shea who the team is thinking about bringing back! and he was not a FB..we didn't have one in that O...the position he played was called a halfback or something

We didn't have the H-back offense until '01 when Arians came around. I still don't know what an H-back is.

Speaking of Arians, think he's gonna bring the H-back in with the Steelers? hahahaha

Wasn't Mike Sellers with us then? He's a solid starter with Washington right now.

i really hope that Vickers is the only FB on the team... there is no need for another... no need to waste a roster spot...

Can u cut someone that is in the NFLE? Cuz im really pulling for Barclay..

Yes but since they have a roster exemption right now we wouldn't. The fact that he is doing well probably doesn't hurt.

that first draft did suck. oh well, onward we go.

We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

The Browns will only need one FB since they are going with a mostly two TE offense. Plus if they keep Krause, he can double as FB/H-back

A H-back is basically a motion TE. He can line up as a FB, then motion out to the side he's blocking on, line up in the slot, or go out for a pass from the backfield. Typically H-backs end up being college TE's who are a bit on the shorter side (6'2 or so), with decent frames, but aren't total bangers at FB. The best H-back in the NFL right now might be Chris Cooley.

Arians runs a modified two TE/TE and H-back offense which he will be installing in Pittsburgh. Heath Miller will likely end up as the h-back who motions/moves around, and then Spaeth/Tuman/whoever will likely be more of the in-line TE.

The Browns will probably utilize Winslow as that guy in the offense this year, with Heiden being the blocker.

Mike Sellers is more of a FB than TE because he lacks height, but he gets moved around a lot, especially on the goalline. Gibbs and Saunders love to use his receiving skills down there.

It's tough to get too upset when you cut a fourth-rounder from a few years ago and some other guy.

Guess the Browns blew it when they hired Savage...all they had to do is look at their messge board and they could have found some prospective GMs who had a perfect record of picking talent over the last 3 yrs.

Nope .. well maybe one foot but I am not a jump on and off kinda guy .. *L* ..

I said the day after last years draft this one would go along way in proving weather Opie got it or not .. and he passed with FLYING COLORS .. as much as I wanted BQ when we took Joe I was THRILLED .... it was a GREAT PICK even though i was dissapointed we didn't get my boy ..

I said pre-draft that if we took BQ or Joe that we did the right thing .. if we took Russell or AP it was Dopie ... wel he got them both .. so I guess maybe I have one foot solidily on and the other perched on the edge ready to get on . *L* ..

I STILL CANT BELIEVE WE GOT THEM BOTH ... WOOOHOOOOOO ...

what a GREAT TIME to be a Dawg ...

I look at this and I think "Phil picked a 4th round bust". If I remember correctly, he as a 2nd 4th round pick for us. I find this amazingly a good thing, considering every 1st round pick for the last 2 GMs aren't on the team anymore (with the exception of Winslow). Faine is the only other 1st rounder that isn't considered a bust, but he shouldn't have been a 1st round pick either.

Give me a break. Don't put words into my mouth. You're acting like the freaking kids on here.

And you must have missed it, because there were plenty of guys who were telling me Perkins was a value pick when I said it was a stupid pick, including two of your good buddies.

Yes, many thought it was a value pick in the 4th. He was known to be a great special teamer along with being a good corner. I am not one of the ones you are talking about but I did think it was a good pick. Turns out I was wrong.

I was hoping the kid would turn out to be a weapon as a punt returner, but that skill alone couldn't keep him on the team. Too many other decent DBs, it appears.

I can recall being excited about the pick in the hopes that he would pan out as a great return man for us. Big ST plays can invigorate the crowd and the offense....*shrug*

Antonio Perkins problem was he was a punt returner 1st and a CB 2nd.
He never was a good CB at Oklahoma. He set some records returning punts, but that hardly justifies taking him so high. You can get solid starters in RDS 3-5. You can't be taking specialists.
Perkins never was physical enough to be effective at CB and lacked any ball instincts.
Considering the condition of the roster when Savage took over, the Browns needed to hit the bullseye also in the mid rounds.....
they didn't with Frye and Perkins.

I have no problem taking a shot at a school record setter on PR's in the fourth round. It's Ginn in round one I would have had a problem with if I were a Phins fan.

The best part about this, is Phil didn't let his pride get in the way and keep this guy on the roster. It would also appear that it's possible we've improved at both CB & PR/KR to drop a player that does both from the roster. Either one of those two statements makes me happy.

Excellent Value Pick at the time...lol

Of course in hind sight we should have picked Elton Brown...that way we'd have a 340 lb bust instead
http://www.azcardinals.com/gameday/depth_chart.php

note where he is on their depth chart?

Was on the 53 man roster in 06 but was inactive for all 16 games. Up n Comer.

In hind sight - it would have been nice to get Marion Barber III, Brandon Jacobs or Canty.

But the 05 draft was not that deep or strong - I don't think its what Savage should be graded on - after all its just one player taken on the 2nd day. Not when we got so many good prospects from our drafts the last 3 years making an excellent young foundation of talent for this team.

Neither of these cuts...we also cut an OLman who was nicked with injuries. Were much of a surprise - I did think Perkins would be kept longer for the competition of Punt returner but no big deal. Hopefully this opens a spot for Barclay to make a serious attempt to make our Roster as a ST addition.

Ricard - no big deal either. Makes me curious now on the kid Charles Ali and I will give him a good look on ST as thats the only way he makes the team - I don't think by Offense alone we will carry two FBs.

Plus in the NFL Network I did see a lot of Heiden lining up in the "I" as a FB then shift to a TE spot. It could be strictly one FB and 3 TE's and we'll use a lot of 2 TE sets. In our Offense we might simply see Harrison or Wright move in and take Vicker's reps if he gets injured...We are using the FB as an Offensive Weapon more than a Tool - I've seen many a Undersized FB utilized in that fashion...very 2 back offense more than Power Football.

Only McMillan remains from that 05 2nd day??? Also remember we didn't have our Scouting staff on board in action for the entire draft investigation period so our depth decisions in a Not so Deep draft might have been a little inferior...Its not like we didn't see a vast improvement in 06.
A pretty Deep draft.
Savage in place for a complete investigation period on prospects buidling a board.
Only Baba - looks to be a lost 6th rounder and he's still got a shot - I just don't think he fits well.

So its not like we got to really worry or question Savage. After all its our 1st day picks as the reason for stunted growth and why Savage was brought in.

So far so good.

Holly is the only name I recongnize from this list as far as guys with playing time. There are other QBs like Fitzpatrick and Ovarlosky that are on rosters that have shown some ability. I am curious on how many of these guys are still on rosters. Maybe that will give me something to do later.

Philly's two fourth round picks are both listed as starters.

Todd Herremans LG
Sean Considine S

Our pick isn't on any roster as of now.

Miami's is a backup

Seattle's is a backup lineman

Chicago's a backup QB

Tampa Bay's starting LG

Tennesse's 1 starter RT 2 backups (both played but one moved to third string after the draft)

Dallas 1 starter 1 backup who may start ( Barber)

Giants 1 starter

Cardnials 1 backup who was inactive last year

Vikings 1 backup ( probably will get cut 4th string rb now)

Texans 1 backup

Packers 1 starter 1 off roster

Chiefs 1 of roster

Rams 1 starter 1 off roster

Saints 1 off roster

Bengals 1 starter

Redskins 1 off roster

Panthers 1 off roster

Bills 1 starter

Jets 1 starter

Ravens 1 starter (drafted Grubbs)

Jaguars 1 backup ( 4th string RB probably gone)

Falcons 1 starter

Colts 1 backup ( started 11 games)

Chargers 1 backup (3rd back Sproles)

Steelers 1 off roster

Patriots 1 backup

35 4th round picks 29% (10) off original teams roster or likely to be cut

34% backups (12)

37% starters (13)

Of those who have been cut by their original team at least 4 are still on other rosters.

Weak draft? maybe. With 71% still on rosters and likely to make their teams this year I think it is accurate to believe Savage blew it in the fourth in 05. Not sure about the other rounds yet.

Of course in hind sight we should have picked Elton Brown...that way we'd have a 340 lb bust instead

Haha, I pimped Elton Brown hardcore, character questions but potential beast. I remember watching him drop and thinking people were nuts not picking him. Looks like I'm the fool, lol.

And to Impact Playa: You called Frye a bust. He's a third round pick, it's not fair to call him that. At the least, he's an okay backup.

5th round

San Fran 1 starter 1 off

KC 1 backup, played 15 games 1 off

Cle 1 backup, soon to be gone

Chi 1 off

Tampa 1 soon to be gone 1 off

Titans 1 off 1 backup

Green Bay 2 off

Rams 1 off

Lions 1 backup

Eagles 2 backups

Colts 1 backup 1 off

Panthers 2 backups 1 off

Texans 1 backup

Saints 1 off

Bengals 1 soon to be gone

Buffallo 1 off

Jaguars 1 backup

Ravens 1 starter

Seattle 1 off

Falcons 1 backup 1 off

Jets 1 off

Miami 1 starter

Chargers 1 off

Steelers 1 off

Cards 1 off

Pats 1 off

8% starters

Much, much harder to pick a player who can make the team.

Note: I did not check to see if any of these players who have been cut are on another team and playing.

Pdawg I think Tab Perry lead the AFC in return average or yards on kickoff returns his rookie...I know that year he brought back a KO 92 yards vs the Steelers to seal a win over the Steelers to clich a division title. He did score 2 TDS that year. He's in the running to be the Bengals 3rd WR at least for the 1st 8 games while Henry is out.
He's not great in any sense, but he is a important part to any Bengals success.

Thanks. I didn't break down after the 5th because it didn't seem to make much sense. He isn't listed on your depth chart but is on your roster. He only appeared in two games last year. Was he injured?

He was hurt ironically vs the Browns in the last 2 minutes. But back to Phil's mid RD picks,I think how his 2005 picks pan out could have a impact in how the team does in 2007.
If Issac Sowell hit his upside,he could provide invaluable depth on the o-line,a luxury not seen in Cleveland.
Jerome Harrison and Travis Wilson need to turn into playmakers for the Browns offense to have any kind of success.

Savage better hope no one pays too much attention to his first draft:

2005
Rd Sel# Player Pos. School
1 3 Braylon Edwards WR Michigan
2 34 Brodney Pool SS Oklahoma
3 67 Charlie Frye QB Akron
4 103 Antonio Perkins CB Oklahoma
5 139 David McMillan OLB Kansas
6 176 Nick Speegle OLB New Mexico
6 203 Andrew Hoffman G Virginia
7 217 Jon Dunn T Virginia Tech

Eight picks, rounds 3-7 are all gone or buried on the depth chart (please- no Frye arguements- BQ is our QB). Only the #3 overall and #34 (that's almost 2 1st rounders) are starters and neither has set the world on fire.

Hard to say it's any better than Butch's first draft where he essentially hit on GW & A Henry.

2001
Rd Sel# Player Pos. School
1 3 Gerard Warren DT Florida
2 33 Quincy Morgan WR Kansas State
3 65 James Jackson RB Miami
4 97 Anthony Henry CB South Florida
5 134 Jeremiah Pharms LB Washington
6 165 Michael Jameson DB Texas A&M
7 203 Paul Zukauskas G Boston College
7 245 Andre King WR Miami

Savage's first draft wasn't very good IMO. His second draft seems to be very good. 2 starting backers with a very athletic third who should get decent playing time. A reciever who appears to be able to fill the slot. An offensive guard who is vying for a backup role at guard and tackle in a pinch. A scat back that put on some serious weight and will be competing for both backup RB spot and third down back. A versatile FB who has the inside track to be our starter. A safety who should be a solid backup short term. We will have to wait and see how it all shakes out but it does look good so far.
