Doesn't matter the attendant turned down the help of a black women doctor in favor of two white nurses with lesser credentials. Paint it anyway you want, it's racism.

Yep. OK. Everything is. Problem solved!

Mistook? Yeah, that's rich.

And it could be entirely accurate.

The story doesn't specify what the medical situation was, it may have been something minor that the nurses were more than qualified to handle and having gotten there first the flight attendant went with them.

Then she asked, “Are you a doctor?” to which I responded “Yes” …..again. She immediately responded “Well you need credentials to show you are a medical professional.”

Again, that was exactly my experience in that situation. And I am a white male.

I gave a funny look but, remained composed and quickly quipped “I have my hospital badge which should be enough.”

Sorry, but a hospital badge is not adequate in that situation. Outside your hospital, a hospital badge is meaningless.

I am not understanding your logic, If she shows her hospital badge that says she is a doctor...how is that not believable, why would you not think she is a doctor?

If a plain closed police officer shows me their ID, I shouldn't believe them because they are not in a police uniform?

They would not let me do anything until I was able to produce a copy of my medical license to prove that I was an actual doctor.

Every year that I renew my medical license, I get a wallet size copy that I keep with me essentially at all times. It is essentially the size of the little square car insurance card we get. Takes up no space at all.

i didnt read this article, but I did read her facebook post. I think she was more upset that the person they found to help, a doctor, did not show his credentials at all, and took his word for it.

Exactly. A doctor came and the flight attendant just believe he was a doctor and didn't show anything.

Wrong. This isn't the first time this has happened in the skies. It's obvious racism and gender discrimination.

Obviously the problem isn't solved as long as people see skin tone and gender first then make a decision based upon that race or gender.

I do understand how many here refuse to except the simple fact that racism is growing in the U.S. not declining. thumbsdown

"A 2015 survey in which 100% of 60 women of color working in science, technology and math fields surveyed said they had at some point in their careers experienced discrimination of some sort — and roughly half of black and Latina scientists reported being mistaken for administrative or custodial staff."

He didn't show anything or she didn't see him show anything? Big difference.
I know from personal experience that they are very strict on who they let provide medical care.
I absolutely do not believe that they did not check that guys credentials.

my apologies.. this is actually a different incident.

The person I was speaking on is Tamika Cross. She is a ob-gyn, and had a very similar incident.

This was her FB post:

"I'm sure many of my fellow young, corporate America working women of color can all understand my frustration when I say I'm sick of being disrespected.

Was on Delta flight DL945 and someone 2 rows in front of me was screaming for help. Her husband was unresponsive. I naturally jumped into Doctor mode as no one else was getting up. Unbuckle my seatbelt and throw my tray table up and as I'm about to stand up, flight attendant says "everyone stay calm, it's just a night terror, he is alright". I continue to watch the scene closely.

A couple mins later he is unresponsive again and the flight attendant yells "call overhead for a physician on board". I raised my hand to grab her attention. She said to me "oh no sweetie put ur hand down, we are looking for actual physicians or nurses or some type of medical personnel, we don't have time to talk to you" I tried to inform her that I was a physician but I was continually cut off by condescending remarks.

Then overhead they paged "any physician on board please press your button". I stare at her as I go to press my button. She said "oh wow you're an actual physician?" I reply yes. She said "let me see your credentials. What type of Doctor are you? Where do you work? Why were you in Detroit?" (Please remember this man is still in need of help and she is blocking my row from even standing up while
Bombarding me with questions).

I respond "OBGYN, work in Houston, in Detroit for a wedding, but believe it or not they DO HAVE doctors in Detroit. Now excuse me so I can help the man in need". Another "seasoned" white male approaches the row and says he is a physician as well. She says to me "thanks for your help but he can help us, and he has his credentials". (Mind you he hasn't shown anything to her. Just showed up and fit the "description of a doctor") I stay seated. Mind blown. Blood boiling. (Man is responding the his questions and is seemingly better now Thank God)
Then this heifer has the nerve to ask for my input on what to do next about 10 mins later. I tell her we need vitals and blood sugar. She comes back to report to me a BP of 80/50 (super low, to my non medical peeps) and they can't find a glucometer. We continue down that pathway of medical work up, but the point is she needed my help and I continued to help despite the choice words I had saved up for her. The patient and his wife weren't the problem, they needed help and we were mid flight.

She came and apologized to me several times and offering me skymiles. I kindly refused. This is going higher than her. I don't want skymiles in exchange for blatant discrimination. Whether this was race, age, gender discrimination, it's not right. She will not get away with this....and I will still get my skymiles...."

Just curious ... was this ever discussed on here? .. if not, WHERES THE OUTRAGE over this ... or is it OK cause it happend to a white women? ..

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/california-woman-united-airlines-changed-seat-because-gender/

COTO DE CAZA, Calif. -- A Southern California woman said she is the victim of discrimination, CBS Los Angeles reports.

Mary Campos said her pre-booked ticket was given away by United Airlines. The reason? She’s a woman, and two men didn’t want to sit next to a female.

A million-mile flier, Campos, a mom who lives in Coto de Caza, said she thought she’d seen it all - until a gate agent handed her a new boarding pass just before she got on a flight to Houston last Monday.

“He said, ‘This is your new seat,’” Campos said, “and I said, ‘Excuse me?’ And he said, ‘I don’t know how to tell you this.’”

She said she continued by saying, “Yes?”

And the agent told her, “The two gentlemen seated next to you have cultural beliefs that prevent them for sitting next to, talking to or communicating with females.”

She was shocked.

“I thought I lived in a culture where females were equal to men,” she said.

Campos is a senior consultant in the oil and gas industry.

She said she had no choice but to take her new seat assignment.

That’s when she said she wrote a letter to the CEO of United Airlines.

The letter said, in part, “What if I were handicapped or transgender? What if your entire flight crew were female? Any belief that prevents individuals from interacting with females should not travel on commercial aircraft.”

She got a reply that said United would look into it. She said she didn’t hear from them again.

A company spokesperson wrote to CBS Los Angeles, in part: “We regret that Ms. Campos was unhappy with the handling of the seat assignments on her flight. United holds our employees to the highest standards of professionalism and has zero tolerance for discrimination.”

Campos was told the men were Pakistani monks who were wearing long orange shirts. She said the female flight crew was not allowed to serve the men.

“We can’t discriminate against half the population,” Campos said, “for a belief from another nation.”

CBS Los Angeles asked Campos if she intended on suing the airline, and she said that was not her intention. But she did want two things from United:

Apologize to every female that was on that plane, including their employees.
Change their policy.
Campos said if she didn’t get those things, she would do whatever she had to do to protect women’s rights.

Where do you get this crap? It's ok cause it happen to a white woman?

This is my first time hearing about it. And it's wrong and shouldn't happen to ANYBODY.

Just in case the entire point flew over you head like everything else.

Where's the outrage?

Where's her acceptance of others beliefs? Where's her allowance for diversity?

She needs to just sit in her seat, shut-up and try being grateful we even let her kind fly to begin with. They should have given her an iron and a bunch of those long orange shirts to fix up.

I learn by asking questions .. what i just learned is that U:

- Didn't know about it

- u think its wrong

You came out the gate making the claim that it's ok because it's a white woman.

That's never been remotely implied around here.

You're right. I am sensitive. Sensitive to BS statements.

I came out of the gate asking 2 questions in my brief and short opening salvo .. I was curious as i haven't been here for awhile ..

U answered my questions while be-littling me .. i responded nicely and got crapped on again .. hopefully that changes ...

Nice to see your open to engaging in constructive dialogue and actually listening to what people say instead of telling me what i meant ..

Thanks for answering my questions .. i'll take what i learned here and move on ...

Wasn't sure where to put this-

I'm glad a black sergeant had the sense to tell the cops to take the handcuffs off.
