I think it was a bit of both. Look at his numbers. They are not bad. I never really understood all the hate for the guy.
And I think it is laughable that some people got offended because bonefish compared Kessler to Hoyer.
Personally, I don't think they are the same qb, but Kessler is not the answer.........you know..........in my humble opinion. Who was offended?
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

As of now I have not really studied the current college quarterback class.
Today I watched the Notre Dame vs Michigan St. game.
http://draftbreakdown.com/video/deshone-kizer-vs-michigan-state-2016/
Kizer was very impressive. He moves well in the pocket. Showed a strong arm. And he made some beautiful throws.
It is the only game I have watched so far. And I guess there is a question about him coming out so the future is uncertain.
In the future I will watch more tape of Kizer and try to find out more about him.

Can I offer some advice?
If you are indeed trying to watch/evaluate the QB class for discussion:
-take notes
-try and pay attention/annotate when a measurable trait happens i.e. made some beautiful throws or moved well in the pocket etc BUT also annotate how often the traits you seek to measure occur

My evaluations of quarterbacks have been on this Board for a long time.
If you are go back and look I believe you will find them to be accurate.
As this season goes on I will get into much further detail about the guys I feel are true prospects.

Cody is an OK QB if we run a wco offense style the uses rhythm and timing. I think he is a smart guy who really needed more time to get NFL ready.
I think he is doing better than I had hoped for at this point considering wew ere not supposed to see much of him for a year or two if ever.

J/C...
Dude's been far better than I ever expected him to be. On the list of problems, I'd put him around #746.

yeah, he's not the reason we're losing
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

I see this ROOKIE qb make play after play that you dont see from young QBs. His arm will improve as he matures and learns to drive a bit more with his hips and legs. He will never have a good arm but he can have an adequate arm. He was banged up a bit today and his accuracy wasnt normally as good as we are used to seeing but this kid can play.
He isnt our franchise QB but he can be. We have had so many really dumb QBs that it just feels great to have someone that you can trust to make the right decision. fix this line and get coleman back and we will win with Cody Kessler.

Kessler is getting better as he goes along, even as the team falls apart around him more and more.
People want to talk about his arm, and he is not consistent with the deep ball yet ..... but he threw a beautiful ball to Louis that wound up being a DPI on the Titans DB, when he tackled Louis. That ball was a TD if the DB didn't tackle him. There are others that were not as good, but very few really bad passes. Given the circumstances, he has been extremely good. I wanted nothing to do with the kid when we drafted him, but he is starting to win me over. He has already done better than I would have believed possible. I do think that as he goers through the system, he will get stronger. He has shown some solid anticipation, and that helps with a less powerful arm. I am really encouraged with what I see so far.
If his teammates were playing as well as he has, we'd have a couple of wins by now.

So everybody is aware that I'm on the Cody Kessler bandwagon, mainly because well...he's the best we got.
So I just want to show some stats and compare him to a few other guys in league.
Disclaimer, this is not to say I would rather have him over(most) of these guys, but just comparing.
Cody Kessler has a QB rating of 93.8, good for 18th in the NFL.
He's in front of: Tyron Taylor, Kirk cousins, Eli manning, Aaron Rodgers, Alex smith, and cam newton.
He's only thrown one interception, compared to guys like:
Fitzpatrick: 11
Osweiller and Winston: 8
Blake bottles and tannehill: 7
He's only started 4 games, completed 3, and has a 4 TD: 1 int ratio.

I think Cody has a chance to be a good, not great, QB for us. He has improved since TC and can get better. The game hasn't even slowed down for him yet. Let's give him a fair chance. He seems to have the smarts and is willing to work. Also don't forget he has some good coaches to learn from unlike guys we've had in the past.

Let's give him a fair chance. I never understood these comments. What do we have to do w/it? We're just fans on a message board. It's up to the coaching staff, FO people, and the owner to decide on whether or not he gets a fair chance. All we do is articulate our beliefs, which in the grand scheme of things, means virtually nothing.

They should mean nothing... but I'm betting that 50,000 people booing their arses off for a few weeks if the offense struggles has an impact. I'm betting that coaches change QBs just to buy some time and to show ownership (and the fans) that, "Hey, we are trying everything we can." I wouldn't want to toss out a % but I bet a fair number of QB changes are more about appearance than about the coach actually thinking the #2 gives them a better chance to win.

That's exactly what I was thinking when I made the post. We on this board don't have an effect on Cody but the fans at the stadium that don't give him time too develop and boo their heads off will have a negative effect on him and possibly sway the coaches decision also. JMO

It hasn't happened yet but if things continue, it will.. kid is a 3rd round pick and we can talk about "it takes time" all we want, once the booing starts and gets in his head.. that's hard to shake.

Well Cody I can see after your first 4 games on the job there is no chance for you to get better so I'm judging you right now and you are demoted to backup forever because I need to hurry and give the next guy 4 games to be a Pro Bowl Franchise QB.
Does anybody else see the stupidity in that line of thinking?

Like when fans say stupid crap like: "Hey guys, lets worry about the Bengals first, then we can talk about the Bills" Uh... only players and coaches shouldn't look past games. That's it. I mean what the hell does a fan looking past an upcoming game have to do with ANYTHING? It kills me every time people say that. "Guys... we got the Bengals to think about first". LOL please. It's like some fans get so wrapped up into their teams they actually think their opinions and decisions mean something. And about Kessler's arm not being strong enough... based on what? He can throw the ball deep enough.

This could go in a couple different threads. Thought I'd put it here. http://www.espn.com/blog/cleveland/post/...k-of-the-futureAs college prospects sputter, Cody Kessler may be looking better to Browns as their quarterback of the future Facebook Twitter Pinterest Email comment 5:09 AM PT Tony Grossi ESPN Cleveland Editor's note: Tony Grossi covers the Cleveland Browns for ESPN 850 WKNR. Bad timing award: What if I told you the Browns would have their worst season ever … earning them the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft … and there would be no pot of gold waiting at the end of that rainbow? No John Elway. No Peyton Manning. No Andrew Luck. No quarterback who would be the unquestioned, unchallenged, no-brainer first pick in the draft. No passer so physically and intellectually gifted that would actually bring Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay to agreement on their mock drafts. No player for which to entertain an out-of-this-world, future-mortgaging trade offer, only for the Browns to fold their arms, confidently, and say, “Nope. No thanks.” No transformative player to lift this abused franchise out of its doldrums, like Bernie Kosar did in 1985. Brace yourself for that possibility because it is trending that way. So much for the tanking conspiracy theory. The fact is there is nobody to tank for. Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer, the presumptive front-runner, has fallen on hard times, to the point where his vituperative coach, Brian Kelly, benched him in his last game. Clemson’s Deshaun Watson is highly productive in the spread offense, but may be too inconsistent and just not physical enough to warrant the No. 1 overall pick. The other quarterback hopefuls – Miami’s Brad Kaaya, Mississippi’s Chad Kelly, North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky, Cal’s Davis Webb, even Central Michigan’s Cooper Rush – may be fine prospects, but none qualifies as a no-brainer No. 1 pick. Timing is everything in these things. And it is looking like the Browns picked a bad year to be real bad. What about Cody?: Which brings up Cody Kessler. The Browns’ rookie quarterback, who wasn’t supposed to play much this year, looks better every game he plays. He has earned everyone’s respect for doing all the right things on and off the field. He spends his day off in the Browns’ facility boning up on the next opponent. Most quarterbacks this time of year sneak in a round of golf or visit a children’s hospital or do something to relax on Tuesday. Kessler said it’s probably his longest work day of the week. It’s impossible to not like Kessler. After falling two points short of the Browns’ first win last week in Nashville, he apologized to his teammates and assured them he is giving everything he has. “I will say that Cody has done about as well as any rookie that I can remember. He has done a tremendous job. I think he has surprised a lot of people,” said left tackle Joe Thomas. Coach Hue Jackson said, “I think he is playing as well as any rookie quarterback that I have had because I have seen him do things that we did not even ask other rookies to do in different kind of teams.” Kessler has done everything but win a game. I know that the quarterback alone can’t make up for all the deficiencies of a roster depleted by injuries and by systematic rebuilding. But the truth is, the Browns need a quarterback to do just that. So what can Kessler do, short of winning a few games, to prove that he should be taken seriously as the quarterback of the future? What can he do to affect the team’s draft plans in April? “That is a good question,” Jackson allowed. Where is this going?: “I don’t know that anybody will affect the draft plans,” Jackson finally concluded. “I don’t think we will talk about those until the season is over. “We are going to always do everything we can to better our football team as we move forward. That is the direction obviously of Sashi [Brown] and Paul [DePodesta] and Andrew [Berry] and myself. We are going to do everything we can to get better everywhere. “We are going to keep going, but I don’t know that anybody on our team can do anything to affect where we go as we move forward. I think we will continue to get better everywhere if we can because I think that is how you build a really good team as you move forward.” We can see where this is going. The Browns have to keep playing Kessler to see if he can be the answer to their quarterback question. Right now, he is unable to lift this young team over the hump. It is unfair to expect that of him. Yet that is what the position calls for, really. As Kessler continues to improve, he may convince the Browns to trust him with the job in 2017, freeing them to use their first-round draft picks on other positions. I am feeling the love for Kessler from fans weary of the franchise’s ever-turning quarterback carousel. But I am mindful of the words of Paul DePodesta, the chief strategy officer, who talked to me about his thoughts on the quarterback position in the July interview explaining why they passed on Carson Wentz. “At the end of the day,” DePodesta said, “that quarterback still has to be a driving force of your team, especially if you want to be a consistent winner over time. “I think it’s a huge area of focus for us, not just now but I think it’s going to continue to be. Even if we feel like we have one, or we have two, we’re going to still try to find another one, because it’s one of those situations where it’s so important that you should never be satisfied with where you are at the position.” It would be so much easier if Kizer were playing lights out and solidifying the No. 1 pick in the 2017 draft. But he’s not. And that means the New Browns Order is going to have another round of tough decisions in its second draft. Let’s hope they have learned from their mistakes from the last one.

Interesting article on the future of the draft and QB's currently in college.
I think you have to take everything with a grain of salt - or (heaven forbid) we have to wait and see.
2 years ago everyone thought we'd have to tank the season 0-16 to get Bridgewater because he was considered (pre-season and very early in the season) as a lock for the first pick of the draft .... Who had Bortles going #1 overall this time of the college season when he went into the draft???
Last year at the end of the season (and towards the end of the season) the consensus opinion I saw and read was that there wasn't a QB worthy of a top 10 pick... I think posters were expressing a concern that we'd draft a QB out of desperation and reach.
So . . . while I haven't been that impressed with Watson. And I haven't seen any of the others . . . plenty can change. I think the chances of Kessler lighting it up to such an extent that we think he's the guy, is slim. But I'm happy to root for that to happen since it would open up all sorts of possibilities come draft time.
The more things change the more they stay the same.

This is going to be one of the strongest defensive drafts in recent memory. outside of JuJu and the tackle from Bama, i dotn know if there is an offensive player I would take in the first round.
We need all the D help we can get anyway.

Gonna be a tough call. At this point though, it'll be tough to pass on drafting a QB in the first round.

Based on talent alone, there are like ten running backs worth taking in the first round. Just take Myles Garrett and be good on defense.

Yea the RB position is loaded and there are 2 centers that are probably worth taking in the first but I am not a big fan of RBS and centers in the first alsthough we probably will need to take one of those centers at 33 unless Cam majorly improves.
