Some bad news today.

My son completed his first round of chemo treatments this week. His white blood cell count was way down on Tuesday, but they gave the last treatment of the first cycle anyway. He had to go in today for more blood work. His white blood cell count was even lower, so they have suspended the chemo treatments and he has to go back for more blood work and to consult w/the doctor on Tuesday.

Merry Christmas, y'all!

So sorry to hear that. We'll send some more prayers his way.

The harder the hit, the stronger the response.

Fight back even harder, Vers. Do it for your boy. You have Dawgs in your corner for this challenge.

I'm trying to flow the strength I didn't need this year to him.

Please let him know how many others are pulling for him.

Help him to see how many of us are working toward his recovery. If we can help (on the sidelines), I hope that your son can take strength from ud- and fight this awful thing.

All my very best,

Clemmy.

I continue praying for him as well.

Have they talked about giving him injections of Neulasta, or Neupogen? Also have they talked to him about taking any Antibiotics?

No, at least not yet. Perhaps that is what they will do on Tuesday. The doc mentioned taking something in case things weren't going well before we started treatment, but I am not sure what it was. The doctor hardly ever talks to him. It's a bit concerning.

GM, or any of you other folks who have had to deal w/cancer, can you please educate me on some of the things you mentioned? I want to speak w/some knowledge when I go w/my son to the doctor's on Tuesday.

One other bit of bad news. My son and his wife tried to have a baby right before he had his surgery for the testicular cancer. They also froze some of his sperm. His wife just got her period and the sperm came back as not being good. I know that he is very upset by this news. It's a primal thing, but it's like a slap to his manhood.

We're all kind of stressed. Now, my daughter is having issues. Her heart rate is very high. It was resting at 107 yesterday--and she is an athlete--and she can't stop bleeding even though her period should be over. The docs think it's due to the stress in her life. More tests are scheduled. My wife is losing weight rapidly. I call it worry weight. My daughter-in-law is overwhelmed and my son is actually having to support her. Me? Just trying to stay strong and not unravel.

Some Docs like to put chemo patients on a Antibiotic if their White WBC's are low to prevent a infection before it starts. Other Docs want to wait till an infection sets in before treating with them. The Neulasta is one of a few injectible drugs that is used to stimulate the growth of "healthy" white blood cells in the bone marrow, once chemotherapy is given.

If the DR does not want to talk much tuff crap. He works for your son, make him take the time to explain things and to answer any and all questions you guys have.

Sure. We went to the clinic on Tuesday. He was supposed to have more blood work done and talk to the doctor. He checked in and I could see he was irritated. We followed him down to the clinic and it was packed, due to Monday actually being the day the employees got off for Christmas. We waited a couple of hours and they then took him back for blood work. My wife noticed that they took him back to the area where they give you chemo. She went to the nurse's station and said that our son was just supposed to have blood work and to talk to doctor. This was news to the nurse. She acted like she was new and asked another nurse for help. She went and got doctor. We were able to talk to him and I asked him the questions that GM provided. They are not putting him on Neulasta at this time, but wanted to start him on antibiotics. I also asked about these nasty sores that look like blisters on my son's hands, arms, legs, and torso. He wasn't sure what they were at that point.

Anyway, his WBC was up to 0.6, so they gave him his treatment. Later that day, our son said he wasn't going to take the antibiotics [Ciprofloxacin] due to the side-effects. I wasn't happy about that, but he's 29.

His next treatment was scheduled for yesterday. The clinic was closed and they said he had to go to hospital for the treatment. He went in at 9:00 and the hospital had no record of him receiving this treatment. They called in someone to mix the chemo and that person couldn't be there until 2:00. They said it would take 4 to 5 hours after they started the treatment before he could leave. He was really mad. He almost left and my wife and I had to calm him down. There was no way he wanted to miss the Ohio State game. LOL

I haven't talked to him today, but I don't think he is very happy w/all of the mix-ups they are making. My wife and I aren't either, and my wife is in the medical field.

We are worried about the WBC count and him being able to fight off infections, especially this time of year. However, I guess it is good news that his treatments were not interrupted, as I have heard it's important to stay on schedule.

Thanks for asking. I appreciate it. I truly do.

Update:

My son spoke to his doctor today. He has one more treatment left and the four-cycle chemo treatment will be finished.

His doctor said he is confident they stopped the spread of the cancer, however he is going to need another surgery. He can either have it in Indiana or there or at MUSC in Charleston. I'd rather he go to Indiana, but he said he prefers to stay close to home. We'll see....

The odds are that he is done w/chemo, though. It's been wearing him down lately. I pray that is the case and that this surgery will be the end of it.

Hopefully this will be the final step in him becoming cancer free. I have been praying for both of you. (and my church has as well)

This reminds me that I have to ask Candy how he's ding, as he's been on my prayer loist as well, along with GM, Nor, and Groza76.

As a person who follows new cancer treatments closely due to personal reasons, just make sure you keep him healthy both physically and mentally. There is a new treatment out that eradicates cancer cells. They've been curing lung cancer with this one. Sorry, but I don't have the web site handy, and search engines pop up hundreds of treatments. They are getting close to a cure for this horror.
