Just a prediction, New Orleans will be as bad as Chicago next year. Baltimore will be pretty close too. New Orleans is already as bad as Chicago. Just doesn't get as much attention. I agree and it's weird why NOBODY talks about them. It's as if only people in Chicago matter. St Louis is worse than Chicago.

Chicago is still the third biggest city in the country, right? Correct, but it's messed up. St Louis is one of the most dangerous cities in the entire world, not just America.

New Orleans has the benefit of being known as a huge international tourist spot. So naturally the good will overshadow the bad.
Chicago doesn't have that level of prestige.

All people are good. Some just end up a bit misguided due to the nature of humanity. People who hurt others, regardless of race or skin color, should receive conssequences for the choice they made; however, we should not just turn a blind eye to what causes people to make poor choices.
We need to understand why people turn to these acts, and find solutions to prevent others from making the same choices.
Thi is where empathy, humility, and compassion come in. These three tenets I learned from an early age.
I won't apologize for trying to find humanity in those who commit crimes. I believe we fail multiple groups, not just African Americans, and we need to come to the realities that our system needs improvements.
These improvements don't come from my own mind, and they don't come from the mind of Vers. Improvements come when everyone can sit down at a table, discuss hot button issues, and find solutions that help oppressed communities.
I know what I see, and my observations tell me a great deal about the world. I walk my talk.

Chicago doesn't have that level of prestige. For you and candy: Chicago shows up in my news feed - every Monday. That's why I talk about Chicago. I can't imagine how bad St. Louis and NO must be if they're worse than Chicago.

http://chicagopolicyreview.org/2016/01/08/feel-it-in-the-air-pollution-and-crime-in-chicago/Chicago is notorious for its high crime rates. As noted by the University of Chicago’s Crime Lab, risk factors associated with crime include gender, age, race, economic status, exposure to violence, and community instability. A recent study ventures beyond individual and community characteristics to investigate how environmental factors may also affect crime. The study identifies a significant relationship between air pollution and criminal behavior. The researchers estimate that Chicago incurs $1.8 million in annual crime-related costs—a level that more than justifies further evaluation. Using Chicago Police Department data on over two million crimes reported from 2001 to 2012, researchers Evan Herrnstadt and Erich Muehlegger evaluated pollution intensity at the time of reported crimes, while also considering the direction and power of winds blowing from nearby interstates. The researchers looked at the principal air-quality pollutants from vehicles, including carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide. Results indicate that communities exposed to higher levels of air pollution experience a 2.2 percent increase in violent crime rates on average. This research provides the first quasi-experimental evidence that air pollution has a quantifiable impact on violent criminal activity. Results indicate that communities exposed to higher levels of air pollution experience a 2.2 percent increase in violent crime rates on average. The impact of air pollution on crime was found to be weaker on days when air pollution levels were lower. ----------------------------- I know research and science is underrated here so.... let the poo pooing begin.

Air pollution?
By George, I think they figured it out.
Have you ever noticed?
The crime rate is much lower in farm country.
Sounds like a good old "Cause and Effect" fallacy.

I don't think that anyone is saying it's a sole factor. It looks to me like it's a modifier. Same way hot weather is. July is usually one of the most violent months in the year throughout the northern hemisphere. People are little more testy during the summe

It's always someone else's fault, right? Easy to say when you don't experience institutionalized racism. I'm curious. How does this term "institutionalized racism" make crime more prevalent in inner cities? See, I would posit that blacks killing blacks in gang attacks isn't "institutionalized" racism. I would argue that it is the social norm for many. Too many. The opportunities for education are there. But, it takes work. With no to little help from the home life, one can't see a future. So, with education available, but with students saying "screw that", what, as a teacher, are you going to do? What's your answer? Here's where I'm coming from: There are many black students in our school system, relatively speaking. (percentage wise, it's much less than the national 12.8%) It's not a race thing, at all. It's a gang thing. Chicago, St. Louis, N.O. It's a gang thing. Get rid of the gangs. Bam - much of the problem is solved. Now, you tell me, how do we eliminate the gangs? Those kids already have access to a free education. They can make of it what they want. Some do, apparently many don't.

That's science according to Arch. Nah, it's pollution. Has to be. Can't have anything to do with family life, or lack thereof. Can't have anything to do with kids not going to school. It's pollution. Hey, did you know USA Today named Archbold as a top........I forget the number.....polluter in the country, as far as pollution near a school? What's weird is, we don't have shootings every week. Even though, according to USA Today, we have "epic" pollution. (a statement that holds no basis in truth - it came about because the nations largest manufacturer of RTA furniture had a couple of days of their power plant emitting too much in emissions. ) But, you go on and ride that "pollution is causing the gangs to commit crime and murder" thing. It's always easier to blame someone else.

I like how people act like Chicago just recently became violent.
As if it wasn't popping off with the gangsters and Italian mob back in the day. But back then, 7 people getting shot in one day made the national news and had a movie made about it. Nowadays it's a light weekend night.

Education in our country serves no purpose if there is no employment. If there are no legal ways to make money, people will turn to illegal means. Degrees won't keep you warm in the winter or feed you when you're starving.

I'm curious. How does this term "institutionalized racism" make crime more prevalent in inner cities? The Elite, rich powerful individuals on both political sides, design it this way. Meaningful poverty reform would allow oppressed groups meaningful job opportunities, places for advancement, and a better chance of getting "out". You think those in power want to give their power away? Nope. This is why we get fractured talking about social issues, and foavorable economic reform that benefits only the top 1% gets passed. Say what you want about Obama's rhetoric, but the financial policy benefits the top 1%. Relatively no one else saw much economic gains since Reagan hoodwinked everyone with Voodoo Economics. I would argue that it is the social norm for many. Too many. That's what those in power want. You tihnk they want true reform? The last person who wanted true reform for all races got assassinated six decades ago in Memphis. The opportunities for education are there. Education shouldn't equal "escape poverty by filling in the bubbles on this test to show you can memorize useless factoids." We need to treat education as a means of building real life skills, and not to game national reports that compare our kids ability to memorize facts. I want to know how much money districts lobby into useless assessment systems. My assumptions make me think too much money gets spent on useless tests. what, as a teacher, are you going to do? What's your answer? Encourage a dialogue, ask what the kids want as goals, how they would like to work hand in hand with outsiders, continue building relationships with the local community, study to gain more knowledge on cross cultural/multicultural education, and lots of other ideas. I will never bow to the individuals who tell me "just worry about test scores". ------------------------------ Arch, do you know why gangs started? What caused people to join them? Look into their genesis, and you'll find what we can do to stop gang violence, and illict activity.

Most violent crime happens in the winter because people develop "cabin fever" being trapped in their homes for a longer extended period of time. Theft and crimes involving alcohol happen more during the summer.

http://crime.static-eric.com/#topNot calling you out, because I've never seen stats about the North, but I have seen many studies in the South about this. Seems like anything above 95 hurts the crime rate and anything below 75 normalizes it.

I'm not denying heat causes violent crime to occur. Heck, I've been tempted to sucker punch people when I've been stuck in traffic on a 90+ degree day. However, I think cabin fever is a very real problem in a city like Chicago where it's brutally cold.

I think arch and others have a problem with understanding factors.
So I'll put some bars into it.
For those skeptics: whenever we got convoy and intelligence briefings before going out on mission, they would give historical data for the month.
The chances of ambushes and IED's were significantly lower during typical winter months, and crazy higher in the summer months.
This should also be an easy concept to understand. Why?
Because by actually paying attention Arch, ya know, something you seem to not do very well, you'd look at your surroundings.
People are irritated and cranky as hell during the summer time in general, because it's hot as balls. That's not even an enlightening moment. That's common sense.
Somebody on this board either has done it themselves, or knows somebody who has just gone off on somebody for no reason other than it's hot outside.
So while climate change isn't it, the factors of weather in general certainly contribute to human behavior. Whether it be extreme heat, or extreme cold.
It's a scientific fact that weather can affect your mood. I know some people are opposed to looking things up unless Fox News or Briebart reports on it, but I promise it's a real thing.

It's mind boggling that people can't accept the fact that history plays a major part into the problems we see today, and not just here, but around the world.
But all well. Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it, after all.
