I thought I recall Haslam saying that any changes to the coaching staff would be left up to Hue Jackson? I suppose it depends on how you interpret the word "significant" when Haslam said, "no significant changes would be made.

I do recall Hue saying this at his post season press conference which seemed to open the door for a potential change:

On if the Browns will make any changes to the coaching staff moving forward:

Jackson: “I think everything is – I am going to take a look at it all. Our staff worked extremely hard this year, but I think as being one of the leaders with these men here, we have to go back and look at it all and see how we can get better. That is truly our charge – how can we get this organization better in all areas as we move forward?”

Browns owner Jimmy Haslam: 'We have the right people in place'

Pat McManamon
ESPN Staff Writer

PITTSBURGH -- The worst record in Cleveland Browns history will not result in coaching or front-office changes, owner Jimmy Haslam said Sunday.

Haslam made that clear after the Browns fell to 1-15 -- and clinched the first pick in the draft -- with a 27-24 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Haslam accepted responsibility for the struggles of this and previous seasons.

"Our record as owners is terrible," Haslam said in the tunnels underneath Heinz Field. "But we're not giving up. Has it been fun? No. Is it discouraging at times? Yes. But are we going to give up? No.

"We're more than ever determined to get this right."

In the four full seasons since Haslam took over, the Browns have gone 15-49 and have lost 12, 13 and 14 games in three of those seasons. The 1-15 record is one game worse than the 2-14 mark the team had in its expansion season of 1999.

Haslam also has been quick to make changes. Including his partial season in 2012, Haslam has had four head coaches and four general managers. He set up the present structure and is eager to see it through, which is part of the reason there will not be another overhaul.

Haslam said he "could not be more pleased" with the work that coach Hue Jackson and his coaching staff are doing, pointing out a 1-14 team fought into overtime in Pittsburgh. He added he is "really pleased" with his front-office personnel group led by general manager Sashi Brown.

"I think we have the right people in place," Haslam said.

Brown, vice president of player personnel Andrew Berry and director of strategy Paul DePodesta will continue to guide the scouting and personnel decisions with input from the team's hefty analytics departments.

Jackson will have significant input on personnel, and he will guide the team on the field.

"Me and Sashi are in lockstep trying to get this football team to be the best that it is," Jackson said. "We're going to get there. That's all I can tell you. We are together. We know what we're doing."

There were plenty of anguished and angry faces after the season finale. Jackson refused to hide from the record.

"I feel like we've earned it because it is what it is," Jackson said. "You can't sugarcoat that."

Haslam blamed poor drafting for the team's struggles, and said the large amount of moves the team made in last year's draft was to set up the team for future success.

"There's really three keys going forward," Haslam said. "It's not that complicated. The three things we have to execute are this: No. 1, we have to re-sign our key players. No. 2, we have to be appropriately aggressive in free agency. And No. 3, we have to have a great draft."

The key Browns' free agents are receiver Terrelle Pryor, who finished with 1,007 yards in his first season as a receiver, and linebacker Jamie Collins.

In the draft, the Browns have the first overall pick and extra picks in the first and second rounds.

"We have the No. 1 pick and we need to use it wisely and make good decisions," Haslam said. "The reason we're 1-15 or 3-13, whatever it's been the last couple years, is because the Cleveland Browns, including on our watch, have not made good decisions in the draft.

"It's real simple. It's not complicated. We've not made good decisions. We need to reverse that, and reverse that this year and we've got a great opportunity."

Among the misses were linebacker Barkevious Mingo in 2013 and cornerback Justin Gilbert and quarterback Johnny Manziel in 2014, all first-round picks no longer with the team. The team also has a decision to make on quarterback Robert Griffin III, who revealed the broken coracoid process in his left collarbone was not fully healed when he returned Dec. 11 after missing 11 games.

"Don't make that a headline," Griffin said. "But I think it's pretty naive to think that a guy who breaks a bone in-season is going to come back with a fully healed bone."

Griffin said that doctors felt he was healed enough to return.

"To say that I was 100 percent healthy is a lie," Griffin said. Griffin said he hopes to return to the Browns, but he has one regret in a season in which he was trying to reestablish his career: "I dang sure would have like to have played a lot more games, that's for sure."

Yep, I've read that article. According to post season press conference it appears Hue didn't believe he had the 'right people in place' and made a decision accordingly.

Cleveland Browns have Terry Talkin' front office, drafts, quarterbacks -- Terry Pluto

updated January 07, 2017 at 8:56 AM
By Terry Pluto, The Plain Dealer
link

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- When the Cleveland Browns launched their new way of doing business with the Sashi Brown front office, I promised myself that I'd be patient.

Here's why: The idea of piling up draft choices and taking a long-term approach is the only real chance this franchise has to become relevant.

I really mean that.

And it will mean some mistakes being made, and it will take time.

That's not to say I liked every move.

The Browns have twice explained to me why they didn't push harder to keep Mitchell Schwartz. Basically, they wanted to open a spot for some younger players they hoped to draft.

They later drafted two tackles -- Shon Coleman and Spencer Drango.

Maybe they both will work out, or at least one of them becomes a viable lineman. Drango showed some potential at guard.

But I would have kept Schwartz, who doesn't miss a snap, does a solid job and was open to staying with the Browns.

It was a bad move back then, and I wrote it was a bad move when they allowed him to leave.

I was very lukewarm to the signing of Robert Griffin III. I viewed it as Hue Jackson's power ball ticket. It could pay off big, but the odds were overwhelmingly against it.

So this is not to say everything is wonderful with the front office.

REALITY CHECK

Consider the state of the Browns that the management team of Brown/Jackson/Paul DePodesta took over 12 months ago. They inherited a team that was 3-13 with the NFL's highest-paid defense.

To repeat, the team was 3-13, not 13-3. The Browns had not had a winning record since 2007. The different short-term fixes generally had been a disaster.

Players such as Alex Mack, Travis Benjamin and Tashaun Gipson wanted out because previous front offices failed to offer them reasonable contract extensions. I say front OFFICES ... as in more than one ... because three different front offices had a chance to sign Mack before 2016.

The Browns are a joke because they lose so much, fire so many people. And now, they are the egg-head team because of all the Harvard guys in the front office and the reliance on analytics.

They are easy targets for their critics. The current front office also has inherited the sins of front offices past.

I'm reading a book called BELICHICK AND BRADY, by Michael Holley. He is an Akron native, an excellent author who has authored several books on the Patriots.

The basic approach the Browns are taking to the draft is what Belichick has been doing since he took over the New England Patriots in 2000. What has helped Belichick is having Brady, so he's not been on a perpetual search for a quarterback.

Belichick consistently trades back in the draft, adding future picks. He can seem ruthless by cutting and/or trading players considered to be too high priced.

That's why he shipped linebacker Jamie Collins to the Browns in midseason. He doesn't want to pay Collins big money because he has other free agents coming up who need to be paid. He prefers them over Collins, especially when comparing price tags.

The Browns are willing to take the 27-year-old Collins because of their lack of talent and excessive salary cap room.

I thought the parts in red were interesting..

Pluto's story goes on to discuss QB options..click the link above to read the rest of the story.

I agree 100%. I don't post anywhere near as much as I used to, and I don't even read all of the threads anymore. I am sick and tired of all of the petty bickering, that makes the board far less fun and interesting than it used to be.

There are about 10-15 people who should be very glad that I'm not a Ref, because they would get a lengthy time out if I were.

Coaching tracker: Latest news on interviews, moves

Hue Jackson, Cleveland Browns: The Browns still believe in Jackson, even after a one-win season. Owner Jimmy Haslam still believes in the analytical-based approach of their higher-ups. But the Browns are said to be searching for a little more scouting muscle. The expectation is for Cleveland to hire a top scout, likely right below executive vice president Sashi Brown, to serve as the main football voice and be charged with finding the kind of players Jackson covets. "I think we have the right people in place," Haslam said in an interview after Week 17's overtime loss to the Steelers. "I could not be more pleased with the job that Hue and his staff are doing. You wouldn't think this was a team that was 1-14 that was out there battling. ... So really pleased with Hue and really pleased with our personnel group."

If the above quote is accurate and if the quote is true..it would be exactly what I have been calling for.

We will have wait to see about the "ifs".

As the article states, this individual is going to be a football guy, who will help Hue find the talent that meets Hue's standards.

At this time, this individual is being referred to as "a top scout"...who will assume the position just below Sashi, the GM and ahead of Andrew Berry, the VP of Player Personnel.

This "top scout" would assume the #4 position in the Browns front office.

When was the last time you saw "a scout" holding the #4 position in a franchise, just below the GM?

Sounds to me like the Browns are planning to hire a GM over the football side of the franchise. I don't care what they want to call the position as long as there is more balance in the front office, with emphasis on people with a football background helping Hue in the selection of the football talent.

Believe it when I see it...but it would be a step in the right direction, if they get a guy Hue wants.

Guess what Lombardi, and Brown never had a 8-8 roster before either one of them had a chance. So have fun blowing it out your ass.

I have never seen you say one good thing about the Browns. Heck, I haven't even seen you say one middle of the road comment about the Browns. All I have seen from you is constant trashing of the Browns.

I believe in objectivity and I despise posters who attack anyone who is objective about the team, but dude, you are even worse than they are.

This is a Brown's board, so I get the homerism aspect. But you? You are just a troll who loves upsetting others.

WRONG.... I was I believe the first one to Pimp Farmer based on what I heard from others involved with the NFL. I was also wrong about him, and have admitted that already. He was not ready and may never be ready to be a GM

Now as far as the quote involving Bowe for the second time in one post your wrong That was never made by me. Your swinging and missing more times than Mark Reynolds blush

IMO not so good as Jimmy was still listening to the same people inside the NFL that he was when he hired Farmer.

Cleveland Browns Set to Have About $107.46 Million in Cap Space

With the offseason starting to take shape, it's time to start thinking about the following things regarding the Cleveland Browns:

- The team's current salary cap situation.
- Using the franchise tag.
- Re-signing our own free agents.
- Releasing players to open up more cap space.
- Signing other teams' free agents.

The first stage in that process is to look at the Browns' cap space heading into the 2017 offseason. The Browns enter the 2017 offseason with the highest cap space in the NFL at about $107.46 million.

How ridiculous is that number? About a year ago at this same time, they were projected to have about $36 million for last offseason (a number that eventually ballooned up to near $50 million). For 2017, we’re talking more than twice that amount!

One of the reasons the Browns’ cap space is so high is the fact that they are rolling over $50.12 million in unused cap space from 2016. The salary cap was estimated to be between $166-$170 million for the upcoming season, which is up from the $155.27 million salary cap in 2016.

For the purposes of estimating the Browns' cap space, we are using the amount in the middle of the projected figure ($168.0 million). When you factor in the amount the Browns are rolling over, their team salary cap is estimated at $218.12 million, which is also the highest figure in the NFL. Let's break these numbers down in a more formalized manner:

NFL 2017 Salary Cap (Projected): $168.0 million
Browns' Rollover from 2016: $50.12 million
Browns' 2017 Adjusted Salary Cap: $168.0 million + $50.12 million = $218.12 million

How much money do the Browns already have committed toward the 2016 salary cap? To determine that, we need two figures: the top 51 salary cap figures on the team, and the amount of dead money that was committed to players who are no longer here. For example, we cut CB Justin Gilbert last year before the end of his contract, but he'll still count for $1.91 million against the cap this year. That is dead money -- we can't do anything about it.

Browns' Top 51 Cap Total: $105.39 million
Browns' Dead Money for 2017: $5.27 million
Browns' Total Cap Spent for 2017: $105.39 million + $5.27 million = $110.66 million

When you subtract the two subtotals above ($218.12 million - $110.66 million), you can see how the "$107.46 million in cap space" figure was derived.

The Browns can create even more space if they choose to part ways with the likes of Robert Griffin III, Josh McCown, or Tramon Williams. They also need to try retaining two big players of their own in Terrelle Pryor and Jamie Collins, and with Cleveland set to have the No. 1 and No. 12 overall picks, it’s always good to think about the long term in terms of saving some money, especially if you’re trying to find a franchise quarterback.

Although Cleveland has a ton of cap space, that doesn't mean they'll be able to attract any free agent they want. About half the league has at least $35 million in available cap space, which is plenty to sign one or two big free agents. Over the next few weeks, we’ll dig deeper into some potential offseason moves for the Browns, what the free agent class looks like, and more.

Note: We cross-referenced OverTheCap, Spotrac, and NFLPA database, and other sources for our data. The final 2017 NFL salary cap is typically set in late-February or early March.

- 107 million in cap space ...

Man .. we have a shot to be really good in a few years ... hope these guys don't screw it up ...

This year was HORRIBLE ... it was painful ... it was a NIGHTMARE .... but now ... that part of the PLAN is over ... THANK GOD ...

Now we have a shot to add A TON OF TALENT .... this is the start of the good part of the plan ... now we just have to pray these guys don't screw it up ...

Let's not trade for Jimmy G though. He will ruin our cap.

The salary cap hell thang of the early 2000s is no longer nearly as relevant. Teams got smarter and manipulate the cap. Also, the cap larger than it was back then.

But, people still wanna fret and worry about the cap while the Browns continue to be the cheapest team in the league and win the fewest games.

As PT Barnum once said.........."there is an ass for every seat in the house."

I've NEVER said that ... NOT ONCE ....

I have said neary a word on trading for JG either way .... actually about 6 weeks ago when it first came up ... I said once or twice i wouldn't cause of the NE back ups playing like crap after leaving NE ... said that once, maybe twice ... re-considered and decided that because others sucked is no indicator on how JG would play ... that was backwords thinking in my eyes ...

Since then ... NOT A PEEP out of me on weather we should trade for him or not ....

Now .. u wanna slam me for not wanting to re-sign Collins, Pryor or Crow ... BE MY GUEST ... cause i've actually said and believe those things ... not trading for JG ... don't glom that on me ...

It was a general comment, bro. I was not trying to insinuate that is what you were saying. I haven't seen you say that. However, I have seen a ton of people say that. It was a general reply. Strap up, bro.

I do disagree w/you about all three players. This team has a talent issue. They cannot afford to lose talented players and CREATE more holes because there are a plethora of holes to begin with.

It's like this year, people have been saying we need a center, a RT, and a FS. We let good players at those positions walk. Creating more needs on a team w/a ton of needs is ignorant.

Alex Mack, Travis Benjamin and Tashaun Gipson wanted out because previous front offices failed to offer them reasonable contract extensions. I say front OFFICES ... as in more than one ... because three different ones had a chance to sign Mack before 2016.

Yet it makes sense for the Pats to franchise him.

I been getting beat over the head about the fact that JG being traded isn't the no-brainer most want to think it is .. just want to make sure folks know i'm not giving my opinion one way or the other on weather i think he will be traded or not ... I'm just pointing out the fact its not a no-brainer .. just want to make sure folks are clear on that ...

I agree we can't let good football players walk ... and i am right there with U about creating holes ... thats STUPID .... but we need the kind of guys to bUILD A TEAM AROUND ... and IMO Collins or Crow certainty don't fit that bill ... now we have cash to pay them ... i would personally rather give that money to someone else to fill the holes for Crow and Collins ... so it would more or less be a self fulfilling hole ... instead of giving the cash to Collins/Crow we give it to others at those positions ...

Were going to lose a little talent wise with Collins ... players like him just don't make it to FA .. so were gonna take a hit talent wise ... question is .. will we take a hit "team" wise and what will will the cost benifit be of not paying the primma donna what he wants ... there was a reason Billicheck gave him away ... and lets not lie ourselves .. he gave him away ...

I agree we need talented football players ... there's no doubt about that ... here's my take on the 3 we disagree on ... and it ain't just U ... i may be the only one that doesn't want to re-sign Collins or Crow for sure and am leaning towards not wanting to re-sign Pryor ...

Crow - he's been an underachiever since his HS days ... i know he put up numbers at some low level school ... the fact he was even at that school is exactly what i'm talking about ...

He did squat here his first two or three years .. he STUNK ... literally STUNK ... he'd show flashes but was incredibly inconsistent ..... some weeks it looked like he didn't even want to be on the field ...

Now this year in his contract year all of a sudden he shows up ... sorry, i'll take a pass on this contract year wonder ....

Collins - there's a reason why Bill let a talent like that walk from a team that is the favorite to win the super bowl .. he was a ME guy ... he got let go for one reason ... he freelanced and did what he wanted ..... and thats no where's in bill's playbook nor should it be in ours ...

Then there was the TD run he just simply gave up on ... he QUIT on the play .... this from a guy that wants to be the highest paid LBer in football ... ya ... sorry ... go ruin another team ...

Sorry ... this guy appears to be a sellfish meathead and i want no part of him ...

Pryor - i waiver back on forth on him ... he has talent .. he can do things u can't teach ... hes big and strong and knows how to highpoint a ball and win jump balls ... BUT he still has alot to learn about being a WR ... he's got a long ways to go as a route runner ... a long ass ways ... he also has questionable hands ... everyone just wants to overlook his drops ... and they started well before his finger issues ...

I'll have to wait and see what type of a contract he gets ... but we all know he'll be way overpaid .. and that doesn't bother me .... its the nature of the beast .. what bothers me is paying him huge money when he's not even close to a finished product with questionable hands ... this guy is still learning the position ...

I just don't see it ... i think who ever signs Pryor is going ot regret it 2 or 3 years down the road .. i'd rather roll the dice and spend that money somewhere else ...

Crow was released from Georgia on gun charges.....charges that were later dismissed after he had transfered to Alabama St.

I think Crow is a player we can build around.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.
