I wonder if they are trimming the "fat" to make a move for Cutler or Romo?

He hasn't had a history of injuries besides last season, has he? 33 isn't that old for a lineman. Sign hIm to a 2- year deal for a reasonable amount, with an option for a third, and get him here. Give Reiter and the other guy a season or two of vet leadership.

I am on board with this! How do we get a guy who's been released like this?
Can we just make him an offer or does he have to clear something?
WE DON'T NEED A QB BEFORE WE GET A LINE THAT CAN PROTECT HIM my two cents...

This guy has been a stalwart for a long time. Dont know what he thinks of the Browns, but he is worth kicking the tires on. If he seems healthy and willing to play for a re-build team, then a 2 year contract should be considered. He would solve a HUGE problem imho, and allow us to groom and/or get Reiter healthy.

IF he is cut and is available, and IF he is healthy, There is no reason other than him demanding an outrages salary for us not to check into this. The only reason to not research this is if the front office has already made up their mind to use a younger player and give him a chance to develop this season.

But... All depends on if he's healthy. If he's healthy, I'd surely sign him. Jets are pretty strapped for cash and want to get younger

He does not have to go through waivers. I don't mean to be a buzzkill or anything, but Mangold is not signing with us and we shouldn't be interested in signing him.

33 year olds who still love playing the game are perfect guys to have on your team. Not when you are trying to develop young talent. He would be taking valuable reps away from whoever we plan to play at center next year (if that is Greco then this is a different conversation). There is nothing this team has done over the past year that indicates we will go after Mangold and that he should be interested in signing with us. If this was a player born in Utah that went to Utah State, with the same credentials as Mangold, we wouldn't even be discussing him. Wanting to sign Mangold is an emotional reaction.

I agree. He will probably want more than a 2 year deal.
Add in he doesn't fit the metrics we seek. I don't think we are looking for a bridge player at center. I think we are looking for a guy we can plug in for 4 years on a cheaper contract.
I would.

if healthy I'd sign him to a nice 2 year deal (money is what we have)
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Young talent will not develop without somebody to teach them. Those people, who are paid specifically to develop players, are called coaches. There is no reason to expect that we won't either. We may or we may not go after him, but your attitude already shows you have givin up on this team for 2017 so who cares what you think bro. We just won one game. This team is terrible and will be terrible for the foreseeable future. Anyone who thinks we are going to be anything other than terrible in 2017 is not thinking logically. Because we are going to be terrible we should be developing young players instead of signing guys like Nick Mangold. Would you even want Nick Mangold if he was not from Ohio?

I agree except that I don't think we will be terrible next year.
We lost several we should have won last year. I am not saying we will be in the playoffs, but I don't think that 6-8 wins is out of the question.

Anyone who thinks we are going to be anything other than terrible in 2017 is not thinking logically. Because we are going to be terrible we should be developing young players instead of signing guys like Nick Mangold. I am sorry that you can not realize that vets can teach the young players. I mean it has been happening in the NFL since long before you were born, but now all at once you act like you know better. I fell sorry for you bro

I am sorry that you can not realize that vets can teach the young players. Can you show me where I said this? Veteran players are valuable. Veteran players can teach young players. That does not mean you should sign a veteran player to be a starter on your team when you need to develop young players (who need playing time). Would you want Mangold if he was not from Ohio? (I feel sorry that you need to resort to insults to support your argument.)

BTW just who is this player you think should be our starter next year that has a big enough ego to tell our current O lineMAN TO GO TO HELL?

Normally I would say No to him due to his age but unless the Front Office is planning on making an offer to Tretter then I say give him a 2 year deal because this draft class is weak at OC and anybody we draft is going to take a year or two before they are ready.

I'd prefer we focus on Zeitler and then have Greco move over to center. Also, Stefen Wisniewski is a free agent (again), he was drafted by the Raiders when Hue Jackson was the head coach (and Bob Wylie was the offensive line coach). I think he'd also be a pretty good target. (Tretter is also good, just not my preferred target.)

I am not saying we will be in the playoffs, but I don't think that 6-8 wins is out of the question. If we can come away from this off season with an experienced QB who has top 15 potential (Cousins, Taylor, Garoppolo), address the OL in free agency (C & RT), and then hammer hard at the DL and secondary in this draft (which is very deep at those positions) - if we could do all that - I think we could be a contender for a wild card, (9 wins). In that scenario, Mangold is a good move, and damn the analytics regarding his age.

In that scenario, Mangold is a good move, and damn the analytics regarding his age. Except we would likely have to sign Mangold before doing all of the other stuff. And what you laid out is basically the best case scenario. So if you don't hit on every possible goal this off-season, now you just have an old center on a bad team. Also, age is not an analytical thing, it is a common sense thing. As players get older, they get worse.

If the Browns actually had the strategy I laid out, it should be with the intention of completing it. That's why you make "plans". As far as Mangold being an old center, I just disagree that 33 is old. I know I was never a world class athlete, but I was every bit as good an athlete (and stronger) at 33 as I was at 23.

Maybe. But you probably peaked at 28ish.
Yikes. That sounded harsh. I just wanted to say that Mangold is pretty far from his prime. He'd be a 2 year center at best. And as much as I want him and Nugent, maybe not the best idea.
But still: we gotta get this guy.

But still: we gotta get this guy. No offense taken. Mangold was an alternate to the Pro Bowl in 2016, and ended up playing in it. He was also voted to the Pro Bowl 2008-2011, and then 2013 & 2014. He's still good.

Are we sure Greco is going to be ready at the start of the season? As for Wisniewski, he has bounced around the league even though he's young and has some talent. He was a Free Agent in 2015 and ended up signing a 1 year deal with Jacksonville for $2.5 mill and they left him go without a viable option to replace him, then as a Free Agent this year the best he could do was 1 year deal with Philly as a backup to Kelce.

Yes cfrs, I would want Mangold if he was from Utah OR Michigan OR anywhere else.
IMO - Mangold is still a top half of the NFL center. IMO - We need a center and have no one on our roster currently IMO - without waivers there is about zero chance he signs with us.
I don't know if our FO would try to sign him or not
