Sammies 2016 Gamelog If you take a look...the first 5 weeks of the season...Kid was on fire...then his fingers got MANGLED...and they did...He played through it...but from what I remember reading...he could almost catch nothing thrown at him...where his thumbs would be together..pinkies facing out.....he really could only get over the shoulder stuff that fell into his hands. First 5 games 19 catches for 421 yards and 2 TD's Next 9 games 2 catches for 14 yards HACK

Yeah, but they are loaded at WR.
He has rare physical talent, but he's struggled. Plenty of guys like that. Hopefully, he can realize his potential. I'm not counting on it, but we didn't give up much. Yep, most loaded position on the team by far. That last WR spot came down to either Coates or Justin Hunter, who they signed to a nice free agent contract from Tennesse. They elected to go with Hunter. Coates got caught in a numbers game. Pretty much the only reason they keep DHB around year after year is that he is their best Special Teams player on the team. I would probably have rather kept Coates over DHB but oh well.

Coates gives the Browns a legit deep.threat who can out muscle defensive backs who contest him He had more 40 yd plus catches in limited snaps then the trifecta juggernaut of Louis Peyton or Higgins Really low risk high reward move by Sashi

I'm a Browns fan livin in the Burgh, so I listen to a lot of Steeler pre-game and sports radio here. The Steelers have a lot of depth at the WR position and Coates was on the bubble because Bryant came back. Coates also was playing with broken fingers most of the season, which I'm sure if he's healed up by now should fix his drop issues. I think this is a good pick up with valued upside to it.

Can't hurt. The kid is all UP IN THE HEAD as he can be great or a bust. Depends if we can get him to up his game mentally.

j/c I just had a random thought; wouldn't it be sweet if Coates beat Haden deep for a TD, sweeter still if it won the game.

j/c - the more you read the better this acquisition is. Lot of upside for what we gave up. Hope the dudes fingers are healed and he can catch the ball. Coleman and Coates as two burners that can get behind defenses would be impressive. I don't know how well Kizer will be on timing and throwing open receivers in the 5-15 yard range. I do know that he can sling the rock with some degree of accuracy deep.
The more things change the more they stay the same.

Ouch! So has he healed? Gotten better?
This trade surprised me. I think he could be a problem in matchups. Seems to depend on which one shows up.

Trade makes sense for both teams. It is kinda crazy that these two team are making trades w/one another. I remember all the complaining when Banner traded a lower draft pick for a higher draft pick w/Pittsburgh. Not a bad move for a "lawyer" LOL Let me guess, I was insulting you again? Nah, just messing with you, not trying to offend

The way I see it. Sammie Coates and a 2019 7th rounder, for our 2018 6th rounder looks to me like they paid us to take him off their hands.
I bet you're wondering the samething I did, why O' why didn't I take the...blue pill

I remember all the complaining when Banner traded a lower draft pick for a higher draft pick w/Pittsburgh. Yeah, you and I were on the same side, that it was a great trade for the Browns. Shamarko Thomas (the payer they drafted with that pick) never did anything in Pitt. I don't recall many people complaining about the trade. I remember one specific person doing all the ranting--- ME! And I still subscribe to my belief. That facilitating a trade that allows your division rival to move up and grab a player they like is not a wise move. Did Thomas flop for Pittsburgh? Yes. Did Haloti Ngata for the Ravens? No. What would be interesting to see is the teams that do these inter-division draft day trades and the success rate. It probably tells us more about the current GM at the time and their ability to acquire talent, but I also wouldn't be surprised if they rarely happen at all. Banner, Savage or whoever does a draft trade with a rival where the rival gets a player they want is not good in my book.
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

IDK anything about any of the players we acquired these since waivers and etc.
Surely he can't be no more a prospect, or even talented, than what we have here now. I wish it works out. Outside Coleman, we need a threat.

One of the worst Press/Media in all major league sports ; Common knowledge ! ! Even right now, they are putting the narrative out there that we are playing to lose, and essentially tanking. Why? Because we cut Joe Haden, a guy who was getting out played by THREE db's. Not one, not two, but THREE! And then we cut a 32 yo backup olineman, and again.. we're tanking. Neither are popular moves, but both are VERY understandable.

The narrative that Haden was being outplayed by 3 corners only began after he was cut. I didn't see that from you guys before he was cut.
Same thing w/Greco. After he got cut, a few posters started w/the commentary that they watched him closely and he didn't look the same as he did before he was injured. Never saw that rhetoric before he was cut.

Sorry if I don't post up to your agenda standards.
Yes, after Greco got cut I took a closer look at his play and I saw what I saw...you calling me a liar? You are so insulting at times. As if you know more football than me. smh.
If you don't agree come back with football not insults. If yo saw it differently say so and what you saw. Your opinion is based on his body of work before he got HURT! He is not recovered to NFL football conditions. He has guts but I hope he can recover.

Never saw that rhetoric before he was cut. There was never any shade thrown at Greco as he is a serviceable backup and can fill in easily at any point. However, when it comes to Haden, I disagree with you. I'll save your reply. Vers: 'Of course you do.'

I said all off season I was concerned about the CB position and I thought Haden might be done. That even if healthy I was highly skeptical of him being "good". I haven't seen enough of the Preseason games to know how he played.
For the record are you saying Haden is going to be elite again with Pit? Are you forecasting that he looks good/plays well (better than our CB's). Average?
I guess I want to understand your opinion of the player - not your opinion of other postter's opinions. Let me know.

haden may or may not have been our 3rd best corner but he damn sure wasn't one of our top 2 corners. Taylor played great this preseason and Boddy was probably our best corner. he made plays that stood out whenever given the opportunity. I saw haden beat a few times and made whiffed on a tackle also saw him roll a receiver and show up in run support. Wasn't horrible warm up games but BBC outplayed him.
I liked Greco and believe he still had a lot of game but I believe it was in the bucs game when he was asked to pull and he just never got there and that was the only time I was ever actually concerned that he just wasn't close to the same as he was before. In Line he was fine but when asked to pull there was some concern. It probably came down to Reiter being a pure center and we have tackles that can play guard. Didn't like the move was a bit angry about it, but he was a backup.
Now to get back to Coates. The kid can run and we will see if he can catch. I liked the Kid coming out of Auburn but thought he was more of a 5th round project than the late 2 early 3 most folks had him. We will see what Al Saunders can do with him. He is gonna get opportunities to run the go route and that's the one thing coates does well.

Hue thought he was doing well and wanted to keep him. Seems like the HC doesn't agree with most of the fan base. Wonder which one I should listen to?

I guess I want to understand your opinion of the player - not your opinion of other postter's opinions. Let me know. No, not at all. I think he has digressed as a player and have said so for quite some time. I thought his last really good year was when Horton was his coach the first time around. I also took a lot of grief for saying Joe was overrated. While I think that Joe is no longer an elite corner and has some very serious issues [lack of speed] I still think we are worse off w/out him. I don't like our corners all that much. I think money was the driving force behind his release. They seemingly were going to keep him if he would have agreed to a pay cut. Right? I also think that people had him as our top corner this off-season and the narrative of him being our 4th best corner began after he was released. I don't find that position to be a credible one.

People stuck up for him when he said to trust him about Kessler. Now all of a sudden they act like he didn't want Haden to stay.

I also think that people had him as our top corner this off-season and the narrative of him being our 4th best corner began after he was released. I don't find that position to be a credible one.
Based on the money he was being paid, he was our #1 corner. Based on his play on the field, he was not our #1 corner. He was essentially being paid as a top 10 corner in the league. He is not a top 10, or even top 25 corner. Money was definitely an issue. On one hand, I don't understand when people think it's ok to pay someone money just for the sake of paying them because we "need" him. Isn't that what this front office is for, to weed out the players we "need" at an excess price tag? They aren't the ones who paid him. Are we better off with Haden on the team? For sure! If I'm Jamar Taylor and I'm out-performing Haden who is making 6 million more than me, I don't think that provides for a very good dynamic. I don't think anyone would like it if someone who has the same job as you is making more than twice as for half the work. I like to think this plays a roll in cutting Haden or asking for him to take a pay cut. As someone pointed out, Haden didn't take a pay cut to play for the Browns, he took a pay cut to play for a competitor... So where do his loyalties lay? Hmmmm.... I also don't agree with the comments that Haden is over the hill or washed up. I think he's still a fine CB who has been injured and in a rut. I think he can turn it around and I think now, and unfortunately, he has the motivation to do so. Reading what guys like schefter wrote about how the Browns are viewed as a pit stop, or a place to end a career to make a few bucks...like college, 4 years and then you can get out of dodge... that image of the Cleveland Browns had to change. And I think that this front office is starting to change that. Sorry for the rambling off topic rant... moving on...
