The #49ers originally included QB Brian Hoyer in the trade to the #Patriots but he was taken out for comp. pick reasons. Now released.

I would have offered our first second round choice and something else to make that deal and not look back.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bill sent JG to SF for some on the job training with a gentleman's agreement they'd re-sign him if Brady hangs them up.

We probably wanted a guarantee that he'd sign long-term. SF may have been willing to roll the dice. Just a thought.

Would you rather have a QB training in Shanahan's system or our mess?

Edit: Surprised by the trade and would have given our 2nd in a heartbeat for the record.

In an absolute stunner, the New England Patriots on Monday traded backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter. In return, they’ll receive the Niners’ second-round pick in next year’s NFL draft. After hearing this report, two questions immediately jumped to mind: 1) If the Patriots were fine with trading Garoppolo, why didn’t they do it months ago? And 2) A second-rounder? Really? That’s all they got? Granted, San Francisco is likely to finish near the bottom of the NFL again this season, making it very likely that draft pick will be somewhere in the No. 33-36 range. But still, all the rumors we heard this spring were that the Cleveland Browns were willing to deal a first-round pick — or maybe even two! — for Garoppolo, and the Patriots shot those offers down. Now we’re hearing, though, that those reports were exaggerated. According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the Browns never offered a first for the 25-year-old signal-caller.

Read more at: https://nesn.com/2017/10/jimmy-garoppolo-trade-reaction-what-stunning-deal-means-for-patriots-qb/ Did the Browns even try to acquire JG?

Given what we've seen on the field, I'd sign Hoyer an hour ago.

That's BS. Trades have nothing to do with comp picks.

More like they didn't want to pay his salary and will offer him less now that he's a FA. If I were Hoyer, I'd give Miami, Denver and Tampa Bay a call right now.

I'll be well and truly gutted if this is true - and I have no reason to think it's not true. Kizer has not shown me much to think he has the mental tools to be a great QB ... the QB draft class has slowly appeared to regress this year ... and we pass up the chance to add a QB who has been learning under Brady and looks like the real McCoy. Oh - and Kessler and Hogan are both back ups at best . . . . back ups who probably give us a better chance to win then Kizer who is starting. What a f'd up team.

The ONLY thing I can think of in regards to this deal going down - and I guess I hope this is true - the trade required a sign and trade situation ? Or an agreement to sign an extension once the trade was complete..... so instead of being a FA at the end of the year Jimmy signs a 3 or 4 year deal as part of the trade ??? In that situation Jimmy would have the power to say to Cleveland I am not signing a new contract with y'all ... why he might have agreed terms with the 49ers ... allowing the 49ers to pull the plug. While we are all rightly pissed - we'd be even more mad if we signed Jimmy for a 2nd and he stayed for 8 games and then left as a FA.

I like feeling like we at least have a chance to be competitive on a Sunday. I only know I don't feel that way now. Hoyer would bring that much at least. Doesn't matter, Hoyer isn't signing with the Browns.

Shefter just reported on TV that the Pats have been trying to sign JG long term and when it became clear that they couldn't, called SF this morning with the offer.

Exactly. He wasn't going to be a back up to Brady for the next 5 years.

The Pats misjudged the situation greatly. I don't think they trade Brissett if they knew this was coming.

If we traded for JG and couldn't work out a long term deal we could of still tagged him. It's not like we don't have the cap room.I for one would of been happy.

Im still amazed at the trade offers some of posters are saying they would give for a QB that has already shown long term potential at the very least. Our first 2nd rounder? REALLY? We continue to [censored] away our so.. valuable draft picks on players that havent shown squat. We would have been better off offering our very first pick next year for Jimmy G than let the retards turn in yet another blank card next year. Our 2nd first rounder would have done it.

I think he would have changed our whole organization into a winner. I think he is hungry for a chance succeed. Sadly it will be with the 49ers. This FO and Hue never tried very hard to acquire him.

We could tag him as could the 49ers if they can't make a deal.

If we offered a second and something before the draft, I am betting that it was a 2nd and one of our QB's. I'm thinking that Bill chose to deal with SF because Hoyer was there and already knew Bill's system.

This makes more sense than anything else. We probably could have offered more. Maybe a different player Bill needed on defense, but Bill still would not have had someone to back-up Brady that knew the system.

Not sure if this has been said anywhere in the previous 16 pages of posts but I speculate two things from this;
1) Shannahan is not impressed with this seemingly deep QB class of next year,
2) Shannahan wants to wins as soon as possible...what a concept!

Again, pure speculation, but surprised we dropped this ball with the poor showing Kizer has made...

I am going to speculate on a couple of things, too:

--Shanny knows a good qb when he sees one.

--Lynch and Shanny [who some of our posters made fun of] are smarter than our guys.

Some clarification on the comp pick issue...

Tom Pelissero Verified account
@TomPelissero
Must be on roster 10 games on that contract to count toward comp pick formula, I'm told. So #Patriots wanted him ... and now can sign him.

Haven't read the entire thread, but is that true? Did Hoyer really get released? If so - it would be a double fire-able offense if we didn't sign him tomorrow and call him the starter for the rest of the year and let Kizer sit.

Then again, we should have Garoppolo and/or Wentz so it SHOULD be moot.

I’m STUNNED ....

LITERALLY STUNNED ..

Some thoughts ...

- no clue why we weren’t in on it ... NOT GOOD ...

Maybe Bill thinks so much of him he didn’t want to trade him in conference ...

Thats all i got ...

- Bill made one of the very few mistakes I’ve ever seen him make ...

Someone said it earlier .. he seriously mis judged this situation ... no way he trades Brissett if he doesn’t think he can sign JG ...

THIS SUCKS ....

Vers / Diam, you still want to let this play out and not trash can this FO?

I just have a terrible feeling letting these guys run the draft next year.
