Browns Head Coach Hue Jackson Pleads Ignorance On Quarterback Decisions, Kenny Britt

CLEVELAND (92.3 The Fan) – Ignorance is bliss.

At least for Browns head coach Hue Jackson.

It sure beats dwelling on 0-8 or 1-23, or the fact the Browns completely blew their pre-draft evaluations of Carson Wentz and Deshaun Watson.

A day after telling reporters in London that he had the support of Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam, Jackson was asked Monday on a conference call what he tells the Haslams when they ask about why they passed on Wentz and Watson considering how well both quarterbacks are playing. Wentz has already won 14 games in Philadelphia where the Eagles are an NFL-best 7-1 this season and there’s already MVP chatter while Watson continues to re-write the league’s record books weekly.

“I think that is something you have to ask him,” Jackson said. “Maybe that question has been asked a while back. Maybe that question is not the right question to ask. I think as we go through it, Jimmy can only tell you if he is feeling that way. I can’t. I can’t speak for him.”

Jackson sold himself to the Haslams as the man that can stop the quarterback carousel from spinning, which is why that seemed to be a pretty relevant question to ask him considering the current state of the team.

Jackson [allegedly] participated in the decisions to pass on Wentz and Watson the last 2 drafts, helped to bring in Robert Griffin III, signed off on and defended the front office with “trust me” after the selection of Cody Kessler, told us DeShone Kizer is the future franchise quarterback in the making while treating the kid like a yo yo every time he makes a mistake.

Deep breathes.

Since Mr. and Mrs. Haslam aren’t available to field those questions on Jackson’s behalf, let’s look at a simpler issue: Kenny Britt.

Britt dressed but didn’t see the field Sunday in London, which according to Jackson was just a coincidence after Britt told ESPN.com last week just how much he hated everything about the Rams’ trip overseas the previous year. Jackson claims that he knew nothing of Britt’s inflammatory remarks just like he knew nothing about criticism surrounding his rookie quarterback being out at 2 a.m. on a Friday night Saturday morning with teammates – including Britt – even though no rules or laws were broken.

“I never even knew about those comments,” Jackson said. “Obviously, I don’t read much of what goes on so I’m not really sure what you are referring to. I didn’t see that, but I would hope that – obviously, he said it – but I would hope that he didn’t mean it that way.”

Then there was this gem from Jackson when asked about Britt potentially being a negative influence on the youngest locker room in the league: “If I knew Kenny Britt was a negative influence on our football team, he wouldn’t be here,” Jackson said.

Say what?

Britt catches on average 1 out of 3 balls thrown his way, has been caught dancing and not paying attention during practice, is a ringleader of commotion caused by players in an attempt to make availability with the team as uncomfortable for reporters as possible and this guy isn’t a negative influence?

Either Jackson has zero feel for his team or he is just choosing to pretend not to see what everyone else does – that Britt is a $17 million problem that should’ve been sent packing weeks ago.

Or maybe not according to Jackson.

“Yeah, there is a spot for him on this roster. I have played Kenny most games when he was healthy. He has been out there. He has been a starter,” Jackson said. “I just thought yesterday, I wanted to do something different as I told him. I was very honest. We played Bryce Treggs a little bit more yesterday because I wanted to get a good feel for him in the game. That is what it was, but is there still a place for Kenny Britt? There is.”

Oy vey!

Those receivers – Ricardo Louis (6 targets, 2 catches, 42 yards), Rashard Higgins (1 targets, 1 catch, 14 yards), Sammie Coates (2 targets, 2 catches 13 yards) and Bryce Treggs (3 targets, 1 catch, 12 yards) – combined for 12 targets, 6 catches and 81 yards in Sunday’s loss.

Sometimes it’s best to just come clean, admit mistakes and be transparent about processes that haven’t worked out but Jackson, the front office and organization continue to prove they’re incapable of such humility. Instead, Jackson chooses time and time again to step in it deep, and it’s gotten to a point where simply cleaning his shoes won’t do.

Then again, ignorance truly is bliss.

Do I need to remind everyone again that Louis and DeValve were FOURTH ROUND PICKS?

Higgins was a FIFTH ROUND PICK.

Sheesh, people here have short memories.

Really, I mean seriously, you can't be pissed that these guys aren't perpetual Pro-Bowlers, can you?

I just did a quick read of the guys taken after them, and there were MAYBE three names I recognized.

This whole excercise of bashing the FO for late rounders not being HOF material is just dumb.

This, I don't get. Why does anyone have or want an "agenda" on an anonymous internet forum?

Because for some, a internet forum is about all they have.

So yeah I think if you give the FO 5 years, you have to give the staff 5 years as well. But I think with the FO, you can't leave them to their own devices, theres not a single experienced C-level executive in the whole FO including the owner. There isn't anyone experienced enough to say no I don't agree with this or yes I agree with that. We need that guy

lead...I do agree with giving these FO guys more time, but hopefully not in the present form.

It is so damn obvious that the franchise is short on football experience, just looking at their record for picking talent so far.

Their priorities and ability to recognize talent when staring it right in the face..is a matter of record. I hope our front office is feeling the pressure of this 1-23 record because they are responsible for their role in this mess.

Ultimate responsibility for the performance of this franchise falls to the owners, Jimmy and Dee Haslam...

...will they use Hue Jackson as their "scapegoat"...or will they recognize the flaws in their plan and do what is necessary to improve the plan?

Only 3 possible scenarios here:

1. JG didn't fit the analytic model and our FO took a pass

2. FO blew it by not offering enough

3. FO was blindsided and never in the game from the beginning

If #2 or 3 happened, our FO is incompetent. If #1 happened, they better hope that JG flounders, or the incometent tag will apply.

Then #3 would apply. Everybody has a price and it's the FO job to be aware, stick their nose in and make an offer. If they did and were turned down, then they did their due dilligence.

My point is that he didn't want to play for Cleveland, who would?

Is it that hard to see?

It wasn't just Cleveland that tried to trade for JG.

I don't think Belichick cares about Jimmy G having a "safe space." It's a business and he sold his product to the highest bidder. The Browns blew it again.

Considering JG is going to be a FA in just a few months, it's more likely that BB would follow the path that was best for the Patriots. He knows that JG isn't going to stay next year and he's getting what he can now because he's not going to franchise the backup before trying to trade him next year. If the Browns had offered more it seems obvious we'd have him. This is after all, just a business. You sell to the highest bidder.

San Fran now has to sign JG long term for lots of cash as that franchise tag is reported to be about 23 mil next year.

Two days after you stating as fact I want Hue gone when I have never said that and don't want that. LOL. It's annoying when someone says something that isn't true huh?

Yes that's something a multiple Superbowl champion and probably the GOAT would do...

Alienate all the veterans and the guys in the locker room..

And with all the teams needing a QB, its very hard do believe in that...

Or this is just a cover up for the Kap thing, after all if JG is traded for a 2nd round, it makes all sense for Kap not to be signed...

No team needs a QB, not even the Browns....

We can hope they have a plan.

The other possibility is that they have no plan at all.

While missing out on JG really bothers me - even more with the report that Hue likes JG - I do think the FO has a plan ... they are too well organized in other areas of their responsibilities to simply not have a plan - but with that said, with an increasing number of QB's that they passed on looking extremely good all be it at an early stage - if JG plays like a stud in SF then it's going to be another black eye for the FO.

No doubt they have a plan. As for a blackeye...maybe. It depends how this plays out and who we get. Maybe we are all in for Cousins. He is more proven than JG.

But no doubt, if we are tossing all the eggs in to the Kizer basket, I am afraid that isn't going to work.

For years I have said the only thing worse than a bad pick is sticking with a bad pick. To date, this FO seems to let egos get in the way and stick with some players who aren't very good. I don't think it should take 3-4 years to figure out that players like Higgins aren't very good. You can find his clone on the waiver wire every day.

this is the rest..

Coaching staff feels that the front office is undercutting them by not acquiring the talent they need to win, and not putting in matching effort to do so.

This isn't a good look for the FO. I think they have done a great job acquiring defensive talent, but outside of that.. nothing major on offense. Especially at QB.

I'm still riding with Hue tho.

If it's true Sashi and the FO went home at 5 with less than a day left until the trade deadline that's it for me.Thats unacceptable. If they wanted regular 9 to 5 hours then they are in the wrong profession. The FO owes it to the owner, coaches, players and fans to put in the necessary work and time to get this turned around.

We are dealing with yet another incompetent FO.

And unfortunately Hue Jackson will be the fall guy in the offseason.

You can not be serious when you claim that this FO is responsible for this entire mess????????

Have you erased the drafts of Savage, Holmgrem, Banner, Lombardi and Farmer from your memory???????

Are you serious?????

Could they use help? yes.
Could things be tweaked? yes.
Are they truly responsible for the entire situation? not even close.

Hue Jackson puts out the word that he wanted Jimmy Garoppolo in Cleveland

Posted by Michael David Smith
on October 31, 2017, 8:35 AM EDT
link

Jimmy Garoppolo has been traded from New England to San Francisco, and the implications are being felt in Cleveland.

Browns coach Hue Jackson wanted Garoppolo more than any other quarterback aside from possibly Jared Goff (who wasn’t available to Cleveland because the Rams took him with the first overall pick last year), according to Mike Silver of NFL Media.

Although Silver did not attribute that information to any particular source, Silver and Jackson have a close relationship, so when Silver reports that Jackson wanted Garoppolo, suffice to say that it came straight from the horse’s mouth. In 2016, when the Browns first hired Jackson, Silver was the first reporter Jackson confirmed his hiring to.

That suggests Jackson and the Browns’ front office don’t see eye to eye: Jackson wanted Garoppolo, and the Browns could have acquired Garoppolo because they have two first-round picks and three second-round picks in the 2018 NFL draft, and all it took the 49ers to get Garoppolo was one second-round pick. The Browns didn’t get Jackson’s guy, and Jackson wants everyone to know that.

Whatever the reasons that the Browns didn’t trade for Garoppolo (and there have been some reports that Garoppolo and his agent didn’t want to go to Cleveland and wouldn’t have been cooperative in contract negotiations), the front office didn’t land the guy Jackson wanted. Bill Parcells liked to say that if he’s going to be told to cook the meal, he ought to have some input into buying the groceries. A lot of coaches feel that way. And Jackson is letting his feelings be known.

Hue is also an employee. He has some suspect issues as well. He can be directed to do or two avoid certain game events. But finger pointing and waving will get more horrible as losses cascade.

We need to simplify the lives of Hue and Williams a bit IMO. Maybe the do it themselves, but we need sensible stuff for players. This FO is in epic failure mode for personnel IMO.

I believe Hue knows how Haslam does business and that he better start speaking up, setting the record straight so the fans know what is going on.

I Haslam to fix the mess he created with the bastard like setup he created.

Nothing is irreparable if all sides have the same goal..

This can be easily fixed with some changes in management and the coaching staff.

I get your point about cell phones but if your getting paid millions to run a franchise,is it to much to ask that the person who has control over the roster be in the building when the trade deadline is looming...I think not.

TP and his agent DR thought they could get ahold of someone in the browns FO to let them know he would accept their offer before he signed with the skins correct...how did that work out ?

TP might be available again, but the front office would need to be pro-active and willing to bring him back.
