Sources: Joe Thomas will be highest-paid OL with new deal from Browns
4:27 PM ET
Field Yates

The Cleveland Browns amended the contract of stalwart offensive tackle Joe Thomas this week, making him the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL in 2018, according to league sources.

The deal includes $3 million in new money over 2017 and 2018, including a $1.5 million roster bonus paid this past week, plus a raise of $1.5 million for 2018 of his base salary, which will now be $10.3 million.

Factoring in his base salary and bonuses, Thomas is now scheduled to take home $13.5 million in cash in 2018, the highest figure for any NFL offensive lineman.

Thomas, a Pro Bowler in all 10 of his NFL seasons, was recently placed on injured reserve after a triceps injury ended his streak of 10,363 straight snaps played to begin his career.

While it's unclear what prompted the raise for Thomas, he's long been regarded as one of the NFL's best and most consistent players.

he needs to.

and i hope this entices him to come back and not hang it up. the last thing we need is Thomas pulling a Megatron in detroit and calling it quits early.

Wow. Rewarding people for doing good work, I'm not sure why this has been such a problem in Cleveland. Should've been done years ago imo.

Its a great move to make sure he retires a Brown and end the speculation that we might trade him. This to me seals the deal and I love it.

Not really, I mean his season is over so might as well give a moral booster to the whole team by showing them that great players will get taken care of.

Not that Joe doesn't deserve it, but the conspiracy theorist in me wonders if this is a weak way to try to deflect criticism for the past week.

If anyone deserves it, it's Joe.

This is fantastic for both sides. laugh

Now at this time they may go with 1 year contracts and let Joe decide when it's time.

Then after his playing days are over offer JT a job in the organization with the hope he will work himself up to a high FO position. He's earned the right as one of the top 3 greatest Browns ever.

As long as he's still around the Browns - if he wants to - would be ideal. I think he'd probably make a great analyst.

I hope not. I would prefer to think that their saying man you have been great and this is your home and we will take care of you.

It makes me believe that this organization is finally placing value on the players they have and is a great 1st step in retention of good players.

Joe has said that each off season he evaluates whether to return or not.

He also said that he thought he was having his best season ever this year.

But lets hope this is a 1st step on building around and retaining the talent we do have and adding to it instead of constantly purging it through FA, and unnecessary cuts.

Loyalty is a 2 way street and sometimes you have to be the 1st one to show it, would be my point. Great step for this organization I hope?

To be continued I suppose?

I think they should have amended his contract every year to make sure he remained equivalent of his status as an O lineman

Two left tackles. Both #73. Seems fitting.

The first question that popped into my head [but apparently no else had the same question] was what happens to that money if Joe retires?

The skeptic in me thinks that this might be a PR move concocted by the FO to make themselves look good in the aftermath of last week's nightmare.

I have heard several reports that Thomas loves Hue Jackson.

The raise could be the first sign that Hue Jackson is being let go at the end of the season. The FO, knowing that Thomas probably goes if Jackson goes, is trying to prevent Thomas from going too and avoiding the narrative that they drove one of their top 3 players ever into retirement.
