Seems like we just aren't doing as well as we normally do. Our speed skaters suck, and the skiers aren't coming up big either.
Gotta say I'm a bit let-down. I get these guys are doing their best, but I felt like we used to dominate both Olympics. The Winter Olympics are odd. It is very white, isn't it?. And, that makes sense as the colder climate countries are generally more white. But, even when there is diversity it costs a lot of money to learn how to ski or to go on annual skiing holidays as a kid. So, the majority of these athletes are probably middle/upper middle class athletes who grew up in privilege going to Whistler etc. for family holidays. That said, I do think the rest of the (mainly Northern Hemisphere) world has caught up. There is a lot more money these days in both Asia and Europe. The economies in these countries are doing well so, many of them are now pushing their athletes to train in places like Park City, Utah (where there is the infrastructure) etc. Thus, we are seeing the results of Norway dominating the Olympics. And, good for them. It's a welcome change and I like their humbleness rather than the over the top, embarrassment of the "USA! USA!" chants.

Maybe it’s just me and if so, I’m good with it, but chants of USA, USA aren’t an embarrassment. Since I’m from the USA it’s a source of pride, it represents my personal heritage. It’s my home team.

Why does nbc have to keep bringing up deceased family members in their interviews with athletes?

I am sure the countries beating the US for a medal are enjoying it even more so in front of the obnoxious 'USA!' chants. Just as I am sure you would revel in the Browns beating a team in front of obnoxious opposing fans.

Why does nbc have to keep bringing up deceased family members in their interviews with athletes? Because NBC sucks. They keep trying to elicit emotional responses from athletes for "ratings", but are just aholes about it. I'm surprised some comedy group hasn't made a Youtube video mocking NBC's coverage. They could start with the interview where they bring up every tribulation they've ever experienced ("Tell me, does this medal help make up for the scarring events that happened when you lost your socks as a child?"), then go into the deaths of every person remotely related to them in the last few years, then cut to the medal ceremony, where they zoom the camera closer and closer to their eyes until the camera hits them in the face.

There's no reason to be embarrassed for showing national pride and cheering on your country. Hell, most of the people there cheering are parents of the competitors. Has to be an expensive ticket to attend an event like this.

Yes, I have actually attended soccer games in England. The Mexican announcer on UniVision isn't what you get at the games. It is very tribalistic, however. Even more so than Browns/NFL games. But, again...at the Olympics it is only the Americans who are chanting with feverish jingoism. No other nations fans are doing it.

Some interesting results today. Figure skating - Nathan Chen lands 6 quads after a poor performance yesterday. Womens super-G. The first 18 racers were the ones expected to have a chance to medal. After 18, everyone thought the podium was set. Then Ester Ledecka of the Czech republic, racer #25, gets on the podium by .01 seconds. She is primarily a snowboarder and was racing on borrowed skis. USA has 8 4th place finishes so far. A little then and now. Shaun Whites halfpipe run 2006 vs 2018

So when you say "I support them too", I simply don't believe that. As displays of patriotic emotion embarrass you, you should avoid watching Golf's Ryder Cup. The ugly Americans and your beloved Europeans both get rather boisterous in their chants for their respective countries and a good time is had by all. This paradigm shift may be too much for you.

I was never a huge fan of the Winter Olympics, but I have really enjoyed them this year.
Unlike others, I think NBC has done a very good job of televising the events. I also have enjoyed most of the events and feeling of pride among the participants.
It's not all about winning a medal, it's about realizing a lifelong dream of participating in the Olympics, thoroughly enjoying the experience, and giving your maximum effort.
I do not wish to make any political, social, or racial generalizations and instead will choose to simply enjoy the daily events and the entire experience.

Do they do things in Europe that are better than the US? Socialized Health Care, Education and strict gun laws are all a plus in my eyes because I value human life over $$$$ and I believe education and healthcare are a right not a privilege. Back to the Olympics...all I said in my original post was the "USA!" chants are obnoxious. I would have thought my freedom of speech to voice my opinion is also one of the things that makes America great. But, clearly there are those who believe otherwise.

Your freedom of speech? GMAB. Criticism is not denying your right to say it. It's no different than you slamming people for chanting "USA". That's rather hypocritical.

They have the right to do it. But, it's still obnoxious. And, like I said...I am sure it adds fuel to the other competitors and it makes beating the USA more special when done in front of "USA!" chanting fans. A good friend of mine who is Canadian has said so on numerous occasions.

Seriously? I also have Canadian friends and have spent some time up there. They are even more obnoxious than we are. Ask any native or black hockey player how well they're received at opposing rinks in Canada.

A good friend of mine who is Canadian has said so on numerous occasions. Well, that clinches it for me. No more chanting "USA" should be permitted; the tennis-clap should be the only form of fan support at the Olympics. The next time an American wins a gold medal and they play the American national anthem, all the other countries' participants and fans should kneel. We're obnoxious.

Strange how defensive some are getting about my commenting on Olympic fan behavior. Especially odd considering some folks were posting in the Super Bowl thread that they wanted NE to win because of how obnoxious the Philly fans are.
Go figure.

Why must you ruin this thread w/your ongoing political and social crap?
Take this crap to the Political Forum. There are plenty of threads where you can preach to the masses over there.
And btw----------are you going to complain about the NBA All Star game being too freaking black?

I’m not deciding anything for you. I said I don’t believe you, you can label yourself whatever makes you happy. Nowhere in my post , or any of my posts have I ever said the USA was bad and that Europe was better. Do they do things in Europe that are better than the US? I love how you say you’ve never said Europe is better then begin to list why you feel they are better. Very convincing! Since no one has stopped you from voicing your opinion, your freedom of speech is and has been intact. That last statement is simply ridiculous.

It's an Olympics thread Vers. International competition inevitably brings up Politics. You can't watch a Russian v US match and tell me otherwise. Even the broadcasters constantly bring up politics when discussing NK, Russian and Iranian competitors.
Also...I actually made one comment and then several jumped on that comment, which I have replied to. So, no, I havent set out to "ruin" the thread for you.

Just what did you expect the response to be when you call chants of "USA" "over the top", "obnoxious" and an "embarrassment"? Do you get that same feeling of disgust when you see fans waving the American flag or wearing stars and stripes to the events?
I've been watching the Olympics quite a bit, and other countries are cheering on their teams with more fervor and raucousness than the Americans are....and rightly so, we've been awful. I can't imagine their fellow countrymen being ashamed of them. Not that I can tell what they're yelling, though. lol.

It's quite humorous how you guys read what you want when I didn't say anything of the such. If you read what I wrote you will see that I said w/respects to other fans, especially those at the top of the medal table: "I like their humbleness rather than the over the top, obnoxious USA! chants". And, I did also say that I thought the chants were "embarrassing". Now...where did I ever say I am "ashamed" of my countrymen? There is quite the difference between being "ashamed" vs being "embarrassed".

ANYWAY....moving on. Points have been made and we're all just going in circles. Also, we don't want to ruin the thread for Vers any more than we already have done. If you want to do that go make a post that questions Hue's abilities as a coach somewhere in a QB thread. Vers....JK. It's all good (I'm a Hue fan, anyhow).

Unlike others, I think NBC has done a very good job of televising the events. Here's an analogy of why nbc coverage is crap. Imagine for the super bowl if they did the following: - Only aired the 4th quarter - Only aired plays where Brady was on the field - Had 5 minute commercial break after every 1-2 plays - Right before a crucial 3rd down play, they break coverage and give you a 15 minute documentary about one of the players. - Right before the Patriots final drive to see if they can pull it off, they go back to the studio and say "we'll take you back to see the exciting conclusion in about a hour"
It's supposed to be hard! If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great!

Best thing that happened during these Winter Olympics is that Lindsay Vonn and her big mouth lost. LOL! Looks like she will not even get the White House visit to turn down because she is a loser!

What? You are a fan of posters making this thread about race and anti-USA? Are you a fan of a guy saying the best thing about the Olympics is that a big-mouthed Vonn lost?
And you think I am the one who is crazy? LOL
Whatever............
