I'd be happy to have 4 armed marines at every single school. I'd prefer that over armed teachers to be honest. I mean we can police the world but we can't protect our homeland?

The source, 20x more for that gun to inflict damage on someone you know?

So now it’s come out that an armed deputy was on hand during the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting.

He took cover and hide outside once he realized a shooting was taking place.

Of course the deputy - Scot Peterson - has resigned in disgrace.

It’s too bad. He acted like most people would have. It would have been heroic and incredibly lucky if somehow he had stopped the shooter.

I mean minimized the carnage. (It can’t be prevented)

Armed guards at all public schools is not a good thing.

I’m starting to think the “Armed Guards at schools” is a generational cop-out by the current generation of childbearing age American parents.

Combined with a profit-motivated frenzy whipped-up by media enterprises.

“OH MY GOD!!! What about the little children?”

This is too bad.

Everyone is treating Scot Peterson as an evil man. (the armed deputy patrolling the school who didn’t “stop” the shooting)

It would have been an incredibly lucky act of immense bravery if Peterson could have even been able to engage the shooter without getting killed.

It’s ridiculous to train for something like this. And obviously just being there isn’t enough.

Students would be put in much greater risk if at every school there was a well-trained SWAT officer ready to pounce with his loaded weapon at any second.

For an event that happens once in several billions of school days. Once in millions of lifetimes.

I think grandparents moreso. Gun control doesn't become a minority support issue until age 50. Even then it's not massive support in favor of.

We are not talking about your own death - we are talking about the death of upwards to 17 other students. I guess the lunatics life is worth more than theirs.....

That is just a false stat. So I wont even comment.

I never said that crazy kids life was worth more then anyone else. this whole thing is a tragedy, and one that could have been prevented if the system actually worked. 39 police calls later, FBI notified, how could something like this just be allowed to happen?

We need to solve the issue, the issue is better mental health care services, mandatory mental health screens in schools by the guidance counselor and a school contracted Psychiatrist, if issues are found parents are forced by law to have their kids given the proper mental health care they need to function in life. So these kinds of things don't happen. Until we address the root of the problem, its not going to get fixed.

im done with this topic though.

Again this is a tragedy and my heart aches for these people. Hopefully nothing like this happens again..

I've talked to many newer gun owners who bought the latest and greatest accessories to conceal carry, they would talk a good game of how fast and powerful their weapons were. I tried to explain to them that even with all the fancy gear it boils down to could you actually pull the trigger on a living human being. It's easy to talk a good game and another to do it, I've never shot another person in my life , Ive taken the CCW classes and gun safety classes but none how to end a life. So until (hopefully never) I'm in that situation I cannot judge another who was as a coward. This is just my opinion on this matter.

I dont disagree, except for the part that this is the root of the problem. Why do we need more and more spent in mental health, psychiatry etc?? What is causing this? What the hell is going wrong in our society that mental illness is becoming a bigger and bigger problem?? Thats is truely the root of the issue. SO do we keep treating the symptoms, or figure out what the disease is ?

This kind of thing is what the death penalty is for, the problem is, it's not a real deterrent. There was someone put to death this past week for a crime from 31 years ago? (31 years! that's terribly too long)
God says if you don't want this kind of thing in your people, then stone the ones that do.

If I were a politician, I'd say they need to commit in cases like this, to make sure these are put to death in 1000 days or less.

because the next insane crybaby is still out there, and maybe if he, or she starts seeing real punishment, they might wake up and stop it.
8 word monicre

Try em and Fry em in 1000 days. ( And bring back the electric chair, it's usual and not cruel because it's not torture.)
In fact, in cases this obvious,
where folks on one side were clearly minding their own business, and someone on the other side clearly meant mass killing, and the identity is known and admitted, and the possibility of self defense is noway applicable,

In a case like this they should put this guy to the electric chair within the week.

And then nobody needs to put millions of soldiers into schools.

You might ask, why am I talking about all this stuff? Junk food, lack of exercise, lack of sunshine, psychowhatever drugs, sleep disorders, too much screen time, what does that have anything to do with mental illness? It has a lot to do with it!

Physical health and mental health are more closely related than most people realize. Typical lifestyle in modern society is very unnatural and very unhealthy. Look at the obesity rates over time, cancer, mental illness, whatever. Each of the things listed above (diet, exercise, etc.) is a fascinating world in and of itself, but you shouldn't lose sight of how interrelated it all is.

Just as one example, take a look at this, the average American devotes nearly 11 hours per day to 'screen time' (TV, smart phones, computer, etc.) This is the average! And surely people are embarrassed by this and the true number is actually higher. Do you have kids? Or know somebody that does? Ask them what their kid does in their free time. Computer, TV, tablet, phones, you know the drill. When the parents realize it is not healthy for a developing mind to spend all day on the internet, they try to take the devices away and the kid throws a fit (because they are in the powerful grip of addiction) and the parents usually relent.

Sound familiar? Anybody else have similar experiences? I think some of the older folks on this board don't realize how common this is. Add in all the other societal ills and you can be certain that mental health issues will become more and more common for the foreseeable future.

Good post Haus. I was trying to think of the term the other day when I brought this up as well. I've seen it called a few things, but some names are "Fault Tree Analysis" or "Root Cause Analysis". The gist of it is that when there is a problem, you refrain from quickly deciding a root cause based on the final result and put everything across a timeline. You then look at what changes were made to the system and when the problems started to occur.

For example, if you have a pickle jar factory and all the jars on the line start developing cracks in shipment. It might be easy to blame the machines that made the jars. But if you use some Fault Tree Analysis, you might find that there was a new lid machine installed recently and it wasn't properly calibrated which caused the lids to get screwed on too tight.

That's why I'm really hesitant to blame "guns" and a few other things. There's been no sudden increase in the availability of guns the last 20 years. Even TV and movies to some extent are hard to blame because they've been around for a while as well. What hasn't been around before? The internet and social media. I think that might be one of the first places to start looking.

The only fix to mend both sides is to beef up security.. There are a lot of trained military men/women looking for work. Perfect job opportunity!

Please don't give guns to teachers. They are underpaid already. They don't need that extra responsibility. let them focus on teaching our youth.

So um, my church has preschool that meets 3 times a week in classrooms in the basement of the church.

Usually ~ 30 children in attendance.

Typically 4 adults in the building.

The Pastor, the Church Secretary and two preschool teachers.

So you think we need an armed, trained, security personal to be present.

And there's tens of thousands of other churches that have preschool sessions.

You think that makes the children safer?

My pastor was always packing and had guns in the truck in the parking lot. Several of the deacons did as well. I guarantee you they were safe in our school because any nut would be mowed down trying.

We already pay the military. It's not a new expense to simply assign some to defend our schools at a federal cost instead of local cost. I can think of no more noble a use of soldiers than to protect the children of their nation.

Illinois law requires handguns from any other state to be shipped to an FFL....Illinois law requires long guns from non-neighboring states to be shipped to a FFL...Illinois law requires long guns from neighboring states to go through a 24 hr wait period and can be carried back to Illinois. It seems Illinois could make all long guns be required to ship to an FFL instead of blaming Indiana for the moral woes of Chicago.

Indiana laws are more lax then that of Illinois, but they are still rigorous in that you go through background checks via FFL. The thugs in Chicago are not buying guns legally in Indiana...they are buy from other thugs in an illegal manner...demonstrating once again that a law will not stop a criminal

And at the same time, it's a prime example of people deflecting by saying "Yeah, Chicago is tough on guns, but, golly gee, the bad guys just go to Indiana to get guns." Like the gangs in Chicago wouldn't have guns if they weren't so closed to Indiana?

Yup, as is the norm, it's always someone else's fault.

There are countries where teachers are armed. In fact, in Texas about 20% of the schools allow teachers to carry. They are required to undergo 80 hours of training and annual testing. Not a shooting at any of those schools.

I've always been grateful that many of the city police send their kids to the same private school I send my daughters because there is seldom a day one of them isn't making regular stops at the school.
