Sorry...I don't recollect that...but I could be wrong....I do remember him always taking the stance of letting his agent do the job he was hired for....and he expressed his feelings of the importance of being in on time(as well as the conliction between the 2)....but I never heard anything about making his money on the second contract...

Now Pete, would you take that Database Administrators job at 4 million per year (right out of college) if it was close to home, and you always liked the company that offered it to you. or would you try to holdout because a company all the way across the country was paying 5 million per year.
Now before you answer remember your just starting out, and you will be free to switch jobs 5 or 6 years down the road, and sell yourself to the highest bidder.

Honestly....I need more information....what is the difference in cost of living....if the cost of living is half as much where they are paying 5 million you better believe I might be going there...
And also you can't really look at it in that way. The reason being is that we are talking about a position where there are tens of thousands of people to give a good market value in the Database field...As QB, we are talking about the BEST 2% or 3% in the field. Because I gurantee that there are a lot of people who can and have played QB....but 97% of them cannot play at the level of starter in the NFL...I mean we are talking about 32 people, out of the tens of thousands of people who have played QB or even the thousands that actually get paid to play QB at any level.....

I don't.
I do remember him saying he's not too worried about the money lost because he didn't have it in the first place.

Forget it Pete...some people can't put things into perspective and context, and just look at the numbers, apply it to their life and say, "I would be happy with that".

Well Brady sounds a little bit different now than he did after the draft regarding getting into camp on time.
Any time you get millions of guaranteed dollars Brady, I would think that is "fair."
If you had a chance to make 10 million more wouldn't you want to wait it out and see if u can? I don't get people...everyone knows they would yet they make the player out to be the bad guy....

Quite frankly, I'm done crucifying players for holdouts. I'm jaded to the whole thing. It's the same crap every year. Guy holds out, fans get angry and call him a greedy pig, FO pretends the sky is falling by saying the guy is so far behind he can't contribute. Then they get into camp, start at the bottom, but miraculously, they're ready to go when the season begins!
Matt Leinart held out so long he missed a preseason game, he started week 5. That being said, I will NOT be happy if Quinn holds out past this weekend, but it's just to show that the sky is not falling yet.

It's because they put the numbers into the context of their $40,000 a year job and think "who wouldn't want that", and "who wouldn't want to play for the Browns".

And another thing we all should do is step back and take it all in a little bit. Think back to draft day and all the happiness we shared as Browns fans. I was thrilled when we drafted Thomas, but when I saw the pics of Quinn in the Browns gear as a 5 year old, a part of me sunk on the inside. Then he dropped past #9 Miami. Suzy Kolber interviewed him and told him "The latest news is that the Cleveland Browns are trying to trade back into the first round to get you." His face LIT UP like a kid on Christmas. I forget what he said after that but you could tell he wanted to come here. Then my brother called me and told me if I wasn't at a TV (I wasn't, I was at a draft party) to get inside cuz they're talking about a trade...then the logo switched from a Dallas star to a Browns helmet. Quinn was ours. I don't know about you guys, but I was in the middle of a 20 person drunken group hug cuz everyone was so happy. That happiness continued well on into the night. So before we get hostile, let's sit back and remember the good things, and that this whole holdout thing will be over with sooner rather than later. If you don't like Quinn, at least give him a chance to trash his rep on the field before ripping him.

and some people worry to much about perspective and context Bottom line. Life is short, we have no idea how many days we will be here. If somebody offers you your dream job, and says they will make you rich, you sign on the dotted line. Play the game you love, and live the good life. It sure beats being greedy, and being worried about what other people make. Now before I get labeled as a BQ basher, I have said the same thing about every holdout we have had, and had this same discussion with others every year

What makes no sence to me is, Brady is holding out for something, whatever it is so in 3 years he can complain & hold out again because he wants this contact ( The One he's holding out for now ) ripped up & thrown away and a new contract be written up, becuase he's....( Which he could walk & hold out on) ? Is he holding out for things he's probebly not gonna honer later ? I know this is all speculation, but players do it every year.

I understand your perspective as well. In the end, he will be in camp and will play pretty much at the same time he would had he been here day 1, so as long as we keep that in context our perspective won't become jaded.

Aaron Rogers - #24 pick in 2005 - note he wasn't the #22 pick but is a QB 5 years 7.7 million 5.4 million guaranteed Contract could be worth as much as 30 million if Rogers met all incentives
This is the one comparison that makes the most sense in my mind.. Rogers was supposed to be a HOT commodity when he came out.. There was all kinda talk of him going in the top 5....JUST LIKE QUINN.
Then he dropped suddenly and without warning JUST LIKE QUINN!
So this is what I've been saying,, I want Quinn to get the best deal he can as long as what he's asking for isn't just plain stupid. If, as has been reported, he and his agent are looking for Top 10 Pick kinda money,,, then he's smoking some bad dope and I hope to hell that Savage doesn't pay it. If he's reasonable and will take Mid Teens pick kinda money,, then I would hope that Savage gets it done..
I've said all along that I don't care who wins the starting job,, as long as whoever had to fight to WIN it and it wasn't handed to them..
If Quinn isn't in the mix, then whoever wins the job will have somewhat of a shallow victory on thier hands... without Quinn in the mix, we aren't getting the best compitition..

Just clicking....
A little advise for Brady Quinn....
Do not worry about the fans and media as most don't give a damn about your financial security.
The contract negotiations "are" your business and not the business of the fans or media. Stop talking to both..as you owe neither the fans or media a comment until after your contract is signed..and then only if you want to share. Your contract is your business, Brady Quinn.
You hired an agent because the Browns are represented by professional negotiators too. Do all you can to stay ready, but stop talking...PERIOD.
Now, on to my fellow Browns fans and media idiots...
Browns fans and the media do need to butt out of Brady Quinn's business.
When Quinn reports to camp is up to those negotiating his contract...the Browns negotiating team and Quinn's agent.
Now to those that still claim Quinn's contract is your business because you pay for the tickets to the game..that's total BS in the Browns case.
First, I would ask you claiming the financial terms of Quinn's contract "are" your business...do you know the financial condition the franchise is in?
Are the owners of the Browns up against the wall financially and last raised ticket prices because they "had" to?
What is the Browns cap space figure?..Are the Browns under the cap or over the cap?
Now, those of you that claim that Brady Quinn's contract is "your" business, could you answer the questions above please?
It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that the Browns got one helluva bargain, picking Quinn up at 22. But if Quinn's people are smart, and we know they are, they would ask the Browns where Brady Quinn was on our draft board?
Did the Browns rate Quinn as 22 rated talent?
No doubt in my mind, Quinn's agent knows the answer to this question going in. They probably know where Quinn was rated on several of the NFL's draft boards so they are armed with information as to Quinn's value, especially, the value the Browns affixed to Quinn.
Does that mean Quinn should get a contract based on where he was listed on the NFL draft boards?....NOPE.
That might be the high water level and "unrealistic" level...but a starting point on the high side.
Now Quinn was picked at 22 and the Browns would be "happy" to give him 22 money because they know that would be a steal for the Browns.
Does that mean that Quinn should get #22 money?....NOPE
Now you kind of get a feel for why the contract negotiations are a little difficult.
The two sides will settle somewhere between where Quinn was valued on most NFL draft boards and the #22 value...no brainer right?
Well it must not be as easy as it sounds. But finding that "in between" ground is what the two sides are trying to hammer out now. It's called the negotiating process.
The average fan is listening to some idiot talking head like Jim Rome and forming an opinion based on his logic...which was damned stupid (yesterday).
Or maybe your a dedicated Browns fan, working hard to make a living but somehow, you think that Brady Quinn's contract is the reason the Browns ticket prices are so high.
Did you check out the financial condition of the Browns franchise yet? If you did, you would know that Quinn's contract has nothing to do with the price of getting into a Browns game.
We all want Quinn in camp ASAP, but Quinn's contract is "not" your business or mine and especially not the business of the idiot talking heads around the country.
Relax and be patient fellow Browns fans...mac

j/c...
i don't know who's at fault...fans tend to blame the player, media-types tend to blame the team...what i've been bothered by was a discussion about the sorts of things that COULD be sticking points...
i like the idea of incentives/escalators in this kind of deal, but so often i've seen QB contracts where the escalator is % of starts...THAT'S A HORRIBLE BENCHMARK...the team could still stink, but as long as the QB is starting, he gets more dough?!...hate it...i know there have been many contracts that have other incentives, such as TD-INT ratios, ProBowl appearances (another stupid one, IMO, b/c of the popularity contest nature of the PB)...but those are usually still coupled with this ridiculous % of starts escalator...
if i'm the Browns, i'm offering guaranteed right in line with 22...say 8 mill...i want 5 years, with the worth of the last 2 years hinging on PERFORMANCE-BASED INCENTIVES ONLY...both QB-specific, as well as team performance...so whereas other players in this 20-25 range are getting total contract worth 10-15 mill, you make Brady's worth 12-40, depending on what pans out in years 4 and 5...the player and the agent would prefer the % starts criteria (unearned $), but IMO, you've just made the performance-based $ TOO GOOD TO PASS UP...every NFL player has a big ego, QBs moreso than others...take advantage of that, and make the end of a deal like the one we're trying to work out in the range of ELITE QB $, given the performance stuff has been met...guarantees the team they'll either be very good, or have cash in hand to cut ties and get better...
Browns fans are born with it...

OK somebody correct me if I am wrong here, BUT if my memory still works, I recall Brady saying on draft day that he realized his money would not be made in his first contract, but in his second one, and that he wanted to be in camp on time.
Yep, your memory still works
I read that article, guarantee i could not find it now if i tried.
The hold out is starting to get to the point where playing time this year will be affected. Forget about starting week one, can't see that happening (and that might not be a bad thing). But this missed time in training camp is important for next year and developing for next year.
I see nothing wrong with an incentive based contract- if that is what Quinn is asking for. I actually think all contracts should be incentive based- if you suck you get league minimum. IF you lead the team to the playoffs you cash in- what's wrong with that.
But on a positive note, at least the guy is staying in shape and working out vigorously by the sound of it. When he reports, he will be ready to go! Compare that the Russell who is sitting at home with his mamma waiting to be signed.

Yeah, none of this stuff really concerns me much anyway. Whether it's Frye, Anderson, or Quinn, our QB play this season will be mediocre at best. My hopes for this season rest on the running game and our D. Once I accepted this, having Quinn in camp really doesn't make much difference to me. As long as he doesn't go back into the draft, he can hold out as long as he wants. I hope Savage sticks to his guns because he has the best interests of the Browns in mind. Brady has the best interests of Brady in mind. I'll stick with the Browns.

I don't think you can really compare the 2 QB situations..as they dropped for different reasons and wer picked in different situations. Rodgers dropped by a lot of teams needing QB including our own(This in a very weak class). I think the media and Fans had him ranked ALOT higher than the teams. Lets not forget the other Tedford QB's before him ( Akili Smith, Trent Dilfer, Joey Harrington, David Carr, and Kyle Boller) So in that department even tho not at the college level Brady had the coaching pedigree... Brady was basically passed up by 2 teams that could have taken him. Everyone else were invested heavily in a QB already. I don't count us as we were not going to take him as we had Thomas rated higher, And I don't count the Raiders as Brady is nowhere near the style of QB that Davis likes...so there were 2 teams that might have taken him and one of those was iffy...Minnesota liked Tavaris Jackson last year and were going to invest in him....And Miami I think tried to get too cute by getting a Devin Hester in Round 1 and get a bargain QB in round 2.... Secondly..the Packers had Brett Favre so there was absolutely 0 chance of him starting.....Brady at least has a 30% chance.... Basically I feel that Rodgers didn't have any leverage whatsoever....but Brady definitely has a case.... Now what are the terms they are actually arguing about and how far apart are they????I have no idea...but right now I think that neither side is doing the things needed to close the deal. Brady needs to give a little and so does the team.... I mean I certainly don't think this is a Poston's Bang Cartoon "What , no fruit basket....We outta here" situation that seemed to be brewing when KW2 was signing....

"He never said anything about a second contract."
Wow you said that with too much certainty but I also remembered his statement and went to the source for you.
Quinn falls right into place Steve King, Staff Writer 04.29.2007
As the afternoon wore on Saturday, Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn fell in the first round of the NFL Draft.
And fell.
And then fell some more.
It was a free fall if there ever was one. Somebody should have handed the former Fighting Irish star a parachute, in fact, to help him cushion his rapid descent.
And finally, when it was all said and done, Quinn had fallen all the way to No. 22 overall and right into the waiting arms of the Browns.
Which is where he wanted to be all along.
So while the journey was hardly what he or anyone else had expected -- calling it a wacky turn of events would be a vast understatement -- it was well worth the frustration for Quinn and the Browns. For he got his team, and the team got its man.
"I'm so excited to be in Cleveland," Quinn, who grew up in the Columbus, Ohio suburb of Dublin rooting for the Browns, said during a conference call with the Cleveland media. "It's a dream come true."
It's an even bigger dream come true for the Browns, who, in getting Quinn and Wisconsin offensive tackle Joe Thomas, whom they picked at No. 3 overall, acquired two of the top five players on many team's draft boards.
So, if Quinn was supposedly a top five pick, how did he fall 17 more spots?
"Every team that passed on me didn't need a quarterback, so it would have made no sense for them to take me," he explained.
Makes sense.
But when Miami, which does need a quarterback, said no to Quinn at No. 9, the Browns got on the phone thinking that maybe -- just maybe -- he might fall far enough for them to make a trade to get back up into the first round and select him. And that's exactly what happened, as they gave up next year's first-round pick and this year's second-rounder (no. 36 overall), among other things, in a deal with the Dallas Cowboys.
By the time that trade was consummated, Quinn had been moved to a private room, where he spent some time alone thinking about his future.
Always a young man with a the-glass-is-half-full kind of attitude on life, he maintained his composure -- then and even afterwards.
"It wasn't so much that it was agonizing for me as it was for my family," Quinn said. "They thought I would be drafted higher."
So did everyone else. Even Browns general manager Phil Savage was shocked that it occurred.
But it did occur, and though he later conceded it was "a tough situation" to get passed over -- "Maybe I should have gone fishing (like new teammate Thomas did Saturday), golfing or done something else," he quipped -- Quinn is looking ahead, not behind.
"It's difficult the way it worked out, but the important thing is that it did work out," he said. "Things work out for the best.
"I can't wait to get up there. I can't wait to get to work."
And work he will. He said getting passed over will motivate him. So, too, will the situation involving the Browns, who want desperately to reverse their fortunes and get back on track.
It's a good fit, Quinn said.
"My biggest strength is my leadership ability," he pointed out. "I'm used to being with teams that are in down situations and bringing them back."
He did it at Notre Dame, and he wants even moreso to do it at Cleveland -- on the same tract of land where Kosar used to roam, in the Dawg Pound, in front of family and friends.
While the other four players among that top five -- Thomas, LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell, Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson and Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson -- all said they wanted to play for the Browns and no doubt meant it, getting to put on a Cleveland uniform (again) will be even more special for Quinn. There is a photo of him as a young boy posing in a No. 19 Bernie Kosar jersey and a Browns helmet.
He said the uniform still exists, packed away somewhere in his parents' home where he grew up. That uniform obviously no longer fits. His new one will.
Someone take a photo -- helmet and all.
In 1985, Kosar, who also grew up rooting for the Browns in the Youngstown, Ohio suburb of Boardman Township, was picked No. 1 by the team in the NFL Supplemental Draft. Kosar didn't start until the sixth game of his rookie season -- and only then because of an injury to veteran Gary Danielson -- and didn't win the No. 1 job permanently until late that year.
Quinn refused to issue any guarantees, but said his "goal and intention" was to be the starter when the Browns open the regular season on Sept. 9 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
He made it clear, "I've got to get on the field and prove it."
Against, as it stands now, another Ohioan who was a Kosar/Browns fan while growing up, Willard native and former University of Akron star Charlie Frye, and Derek Anderson. How all that sorts itself out remains to be seen, but this was a day for Quinn not to speculate, but to celebrate.
So strong was his celebratory mood that Quinn wasn't even worried about the money he lost contract-wise in falling all the way to No. 22.
"You make more money in your second contract anyway, so in the long run, today doesn't matter," he said.
Maybe not in terms of dollars -- as Quinn says, in the long run, at least -- but Saturday matters greatly in so many other ways for both Quinn and this team.
After all, for only the second time in club history (the other time was 1970 with Purdue's Mike Phipps and Texas' Bob McKay), the Browns used two first-round picks to take a quarterback and tackle, respectively.
And, more importantly, maybe for the first time since the Browns returned to the field in 1999, there's seems to be legitimate reason for not just hope, but sustained hope.
That's despite the fact that the team and Brady Quinn had to be content for oh, so long Saturday afternoon to let the chips, and picks, fall -- surprisingly so -- where they may.
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

NO,, I don't want to
Mac, I don't think anyone on this board or in the media expects Quinn to sign for just any old amount of money,,, That's not my issue with Quinn.. Like I said, I want him to get a good, profitable contract that sets him up solid. I don't want him worried about money.. I want him worried about FOOTBALL,,
I only ask that he be reasonable. If and it's a BIG IF, he's asking for Top 10 pick money, I just don't think thats a good strategy.. In fact, that's just greedy "IF TRUE"!
If he's not asking for that kinda money, then I have no idea what the hold up is..
So when you tell us to "BUTT OUT" or something like that, it ain't gonna work.
I'm calm, I'm relaxed.. I feel we have two guys that can do the job. I don't and didn't think Quinn was gonna be a factor this year anyway, so it's no big deal one way or the other to me.
But the sooner he starts the sooner he's ready to contribute.. And lord knows, with the luck the Browns have had, we may need him sooner rather than later... JMO however

Rodgers dropped by a lot of teams needing QB including our own(This in a very weak class). I think the media and Fans had him ranked ALOT higher than the teams.
Why can't that very same thing be true here? And of course we know now,, after the fact that that was a weak class, but certainly back then it wasn't viewed that way at all,,, You are using the benefit of Hindsight Pete....
Quote:
And Miami I think tried to get too cute by getting a Devin Hester in Round 1 and get a bargain QB in round 2....
Are you saying they wanted Ginn to replace Hester... Yeah, that's probably true, but that was just a dumb move,,, I like Ginn and all,,, but to pass on Quinn for him made little or no sense to me..
Quote:
Secondly..the Packers had Brett Favre so there was absolutely 0 chance of him starting.....Brady at least has a 30% chance....
Favre is old and creeky and Rodgers couldn't beat him out,,, that's why he didn't start. I have to believe that, Legend or not, if Rodgers performed better than Favre, he'd have started sometime during his first year... Maybe not game one,, but at some point, they would have been fools not to move Rodgers up had he actually caught on to the system and performed well in Pre season or practice....
Quote:
Basically I feel that Rodgers didn't have any leverage whatsoever....but Brady definitely has a case....
I don't... Brady hasn't shown anyone anything in the Pros.. Right now the Best QB we have on this team is either Frye or Anderson depending on your perspective.. Quinn hasn't shown us that he can beat either guy out now or in the future... Personally, I think he can, but that's more of a gut feel than anyting concrete... I don't think RAC or Savage care one bit about that either.
Quote:
Now what are the terms they are actually arguing about and how far apart are they????I have no idea...but right now I think that neither side is doing the things needed to close the deal. Brady needs to give a little and so does the team....
We agree on that... both sides need to take thier heads out of thier collective butts and move this thing along.....
Like you say, it doesn't seem to be as bad as the KW2 Poston thing..... But until it's done,,, what value does Quinn have? NONE!

Daman....where did you hear that Quinn was asking for top 10 money?
Radio talking head, TV talking head or internet talking head?
No one can force Browns fans to stop hating on Quinn due to the normal negotiating process.
No one can stop Browns fans from speculating about what is going on with Quinn's financial business.
My advice to Brady Quinn was not to talk to the fans or the media because he owes them nothing, not even a comment about the contract negotiations. To comment to fans who get their info from idiot talking heads like Jim Rome or some local guy, just makes things worse.
Best that Quinn remain silent.
It would be nice if the Browns coaches and front office people did the same. So far, I believe only Crennel has mentioned Quinn's contract issues. It would be best if Crennel put a zipper on his lip too.
Both sides need to be at the negotiating table trying to work out their differences. I think that is what is happening.
As I pointed out, Quinn was probably rated much higher on everyone's draft board than where he was selected. The Browns were lucky to get him at 22.
But picking Quinn at 22 does not mean he will accept a #22 slot contract.
Both sides have legitimate issues to address and that is what the negotiating process is for.
They will work things out in time...maybe today, maybe next week or the week after....relax....mac

It ain't that. It's changing his tone that I don't like. From wanting everything done to get in on time, to leaving it to his agent so he can get a fair deal if his becomes a starter and agreeing with the holdout.. (well duh, you're a first round QB)

Media always needs a villian and right now with Brady's hold out no matter what the reason, the media is gonna jump all over that, Brady is a easy, easy target right now and the whole things sells papers, and makes ya dial in on Tv or radio....just my .02

So that would be a BIG FAT NO ... *LOL* .. just what i figured ...
u also have UNBELIEVABLR FLAWED THINKING in this in many areas ...
1. he will get his DREAM JOB ... so thats not near the ISSUE U wanna make it out to be now is it????
2. u have NO CLUE how much hes holding out for .. NO CLUE ....
and dude .... if hes HOLDING OUT for INCENTIVES that would .... lets do an example that will be ALOT CLOSER TO REALITY THAN YOURS ..... comparing being an NFL QB to a Data base administrator is a JOKE ... BQ has a VERY VERY VERY VERY RARE SKILL ...
lets say the Browns are offering him a TOTAL OF 2 MILL in INCENTIVES in years 4 and 5 ... if he is one of the top 5 QB's in the league in those years and PERFORMS like it .. is that fair???? so lets say hes holding out for another 8 mill in INCENTIVES that he ONLY EARNS if he ACTUALLY ACHIEVES some things ... witch is FAIR ..... u mean to tell me he should sign now and leave 6 MILL on the table??? if so .. your CLUELESS ....
and DUDE ... it WORKS BOTH WAYS ... if the Browns wanted him in camp they could just GIVE HIM WHAT HE WANTS .... but that would be just as STUPID AS BQ just caving ...
how u can put all the blame on one side is just IGNORANT .... especially when u have NO CLUE what the actual offer is andhow far apart they are ... IGNORANT ....
it takes TWO TO TANGO .... and in this case and every other HOLDOUT throughout time WE HAVE NO CLUE WHERE THE BLAME LIES ....

Here is the reason for the hold out: What I have concluded from all the articles I've read on this board. 1-Contract in front of Brady, ready to sign 2- Brady has talked to Matt Lienart about hold out 3- Paris is cut out of Granpa's will 4- Paris calls Matt, accidently mentions Brady cell phone # 5- Brady afraid to sign cuz...Paris is comin' to take his money 6- Brady hasn't figured out how to break news to his girlfriend

Sure it is. How many people would be chomping at the bit to start their dream job? Lets put it this way Diam. If Randy Lerner told you to get to Cleveland and replace Savage as GM of the Browns and he would pay you millions to do it, would you jump at the chance or would you tell him to call your agent, and hash it out with him. (BTW that phone call came just a six weeks before the Browns draft

Whats fair is that he would be paid tons of money to be doing a job he loves. Who cares what the guy down the street, or across the nation makes. Call me clueless all day long, but their are millions of working class americans who do not get paid what they are worth, and they sure don't make millions while being underpaid. Heck if any players desereve more money it's the lower round picks and the vets, not the high round draft choices.

What would be IGNORANT bro, is to assume the Browns are not offewring him more money than last years #22 pick in the draft. If he is being offered more than that then the Browns are not at fault for him not signing.
