As I told you in PM, I just had a thought. We are all saying that Quinn, myself included up to now, should sign for #22 money because that's where he was drafted. However, IIRC, Thomas was signed for less than Vince Young money because the FO said that Young was a QB and it is different. If that recollection is accurate, the FO can't have it both ways.

Anyone else thinking we're going a little too crazy over this whole holdout thing?
Just about every year it happens and every year we're ready to crucify the player(s) involved. Green, Faine, Warren, Winslow, Edwards, now Quinn.
I used to get all worked up, but I was a teenager then. I've seen enough of these to be jaded to the whole thing. After all, do any of us still hold Winslow and Edwards hostage for their holdouts? No! It's old news now. Every year the PR BS from the FO says that the player is dangerously behind and will miss being able to help the team this year. What a lie, these guys get caught up and the coaches make sure they're ready to go come game time.
And unlike the Winslow and Edwards contracts, this one isn't exactly cap-busting. It's not like we're negotiating #3 money like we were Thomas...THAT was the contract I was scared of.
For once, while I'm not exactly on Quinn's side, I'm not on the FO's side in this one. If it's THAT important to have Quinn in right now, they would have taken care of it right now.
However, I will be completely on the FO's side if Quinn misses a preseason game or signs right before the preseason game so he won't be able to make much of a contribution in the first game. That's too long. IMO he needs to be in by the end of this week, otherwise I'm not TOO worried yet.

j/c I've read every response to the "other Quinn thread" so I'm not going to read all of the same responses regurgitated here. I find it pointless. IF this kid wants "escalaters" in bonuses and pay based on performance and "starting QB status"? STICK TO YOUR GUNS KIDS! I'm not advocating he get paid "without performing and earning it". But if that's the hold up? Phil wants to have his cake and eat it to. Why not give the kid escalaters and bonuses if "he's the man"? Why deny him the right to get big bucks IF he performs to the point of earning it? Like I said,I don't know if that's the hold up. But if it is,I don't blame him or Condon. Nor do I blame Phil for trying to get him as cheap as possible. But I ain't "dumping on this kid" over a frickin "business deal". And for the life of me,it almost sickens me that some of you are. Agreed. The contract could be for $150 million for all I care as long as the contract has incentives based on quality performance. He'll have earned every dime and we'll be winning if that's the case.

Just clicking.
I know there were 21 places drafted between Jamarcus Russell and Brady Quinn. But does anyone out there think that Russell not being signed might have something to do with Quinn being out? And with Russell not being signed, does that make him a bum too? After all, Quinn was the 22nd one taken but only the 2nd QB taken.
It's the American way to get as much money as possible isnt' it? And 'No' I am NOT siding with Quinn. Just a question.
And the next head coach is ......

Like it or not, the team paid a hefty price to get the kid.
If they are now trying to hold to the #22 money and not build in some substantial bonus incentives..they are nuts.
I don't care what position the kid was drafted....the Browns proved he had worth to them or they wouldn't have traded next years #1...and no matter how hard some might want to discount that, that is the fact that is driving this deal....or stalling it.
I don't think the #22 money is the hang up. It is evident to me the Browns don't want to admit Quinn's worth to them.

To be quite honest, I have a bigger problem with the Russell holdout than I do the Quinn holdout. I'd have the same problem if Quinn was chosen at #3 as well.
At that point, the contracts are so big it doesn't matter if you're a starter or not. You're one of the highest paid players in the game the moment you take the field.
Quinn at #22? Not so much. Quinn has a legit reason to have incentives in his contract should he become a starter because he is a QB.
At this point, the Browns need Quinn more than Quinn needs the Browns. It's not like we took a flyer on the kid, we traded next year's #1 to get him.

Peen.....I thought they did that when they traded next years number one for pick #22? They should build in incentives to fill out the deal but the Browns have done nothing wrong at this point and neither has Condon/Quinn. Peeps are just getting impatient.

The back of my mind tells me this: The Quinn 'camp' thinks that the Browns went and got him because they're pretty sure their QB's are not all that great. However, we don't REALLY know that to be true. ALL of our past QB's have played with such horrible OL's that it's hard to be sure WHAT you had in a QB. Take Jeff Garcia for example. If I were Quinn, I wouldn't be so sure that Frye might not look pretty good with an improved OL in front of him and a pretty good running game behind him.

Once we traded, we showed our hand.
If we had the conviction to trade up for the kid, we should head to the table with the understanding we know his worth.
Look, if Quinn flops, Savage is gone before Quinn so Savage might as well hitch his wagon to the kid and pay him what he thinks he is worth and get off this silly number 22. That just isn't going to fly....not unless the team takes a 2 year deal or adds in some big escalators.
I see it the other way than some do.....if Quinn thought he was lucky and wasn't going to be good, he would jump at the first thing offered....but he thinks he is going to be way good.
I think the Browns need to quit monkeying around and get the kid in here before they ruin the relationship before it ever starts.

If we have an offer out there for $8 million guaranteed and Condon/Quinn expect more...how about this. The Browns ante up $2 mil more and let CONDON ANTE UP $2 mil himself. that shark has tons of dough.

your all BLOWHARDS .... every single one of U thats TAKING SIDES .... gimma a break ... how can anyone take sides when they have NO CLUE what the OFFERS are on the table ... u guys are a JOKE .... ALL OF U TAKING SIDES are talking out your butts ... NONE of u have a CLUE ... NOT ONE OF U ...
lets try some COMMON SENSE for a change ... we'll start with the MYTH of what Mort said today (and i think Mort is REAL GOOD at this) ... well some say they heard him tell some guy named rizzo on the radio this morning that BQ is holding out for #10 $$$$ .... but he NEVER CLARIFIED what that meant ... and i would be STUNNED if BQ is holding out for the SAME GAURANTEED $$$$$$$ and total package that matt signed last year ... if he is him and Condon are JUST PLAIN THIEVES and are trying to COMMIT A ROBBERY .....
now on the same hand if BQ is holding out for a package that with INCENTIVES that are not easy to reach such as wins/pro bowls anotherwords he is a VERY SUCCESFUL QB and helps us achieve success for a total package around what matt got ... I thinnk that may be a bit much but it certainly is WITHIN the realm of possibility .... all he is asking for is PAY ME IF I PRODUCE .... wtf is wrong with that????
this is BY FAR the MOST COMPLEX negotation we have had ... and its not EVEN CLOSE .... and here's why weather u menZas agree with it or not ...
1. as B pointed out he is a QB .. they ALWAYS GET MORE ... ALWAYS ... weather its right or wrong ... they ALWAYS GET MORE ..... i have no clue what Vince got last year ... but i bet Joe didnt get as much as him much less the SLOTTED RAISE....why do u think that is??? well DUH ...
2. we TRADED UP TO GET HIM ..... that INCREASES VALUE RIGHT THERE ..... and if u cant see that ... your either thinking with your HEART or arent capable of thinking ...
if BQ is holding out for #10 $$$$$ in the LITERAL SENSE ... i will be the first to RIP HIM and say he is a JACKASS and DISSAPOINTED ME ..... unlike U tabber I am able to be objective ..... just cause u cant dotn mean i cant ... my stance is what it has been with every single one of our HOLDOUTS .... NOT BLAME EITHER SIDE UNTIL I GET SOME CONCRETE FACTS ... and that usually doesnt come out till the contract details are known ... UNLIKE U TAB .... who just 2 days ago was running around saying .... WOOOHOOOO ... PROGRESS WAS MADE BQ MUST BE PUSHING IT ..... now on BS INFO THAT WE REALLY KNOW NUTTIN ABOUT your ready to LEAD THE LYNCHING PARTY .... i *LOL* when u were praising BQ and am *LOL* now at u and the lynch mob ... and the same goes for U PEENIE ... u have NO CLUE whats going ... so how the hell can u place blame????
my EDUCATED GUESS is that the holdups are all about VOIDABLE YEARS vs INCENTIVE $$$$$ .... and it all revolves around years 4 and 5 ... but thats just MY EDUCATED GUESS ... anyone wanna bet if anything does come out afterwords thats what it was????
for anyone that cared to actually THINK ABOUT THIS before hand this had DIFFUCULT written all over it ... and AMAZINGLY ENOUGH its NOT EASY .... imagine that ... *L* ...

Very true... but you also don't run into it offering up the farm. The game has to be played out, and NONE of us know what is being tossed around, so I don't see how ANY of us can sit here and be critical of one side and not the other.
Just as with signing, NOT signing takes two to tango.
Browns is the Browns

I was just at training camp today and we need him to get into camp ASAP. The Qb performance from Anderson and Frye was less than acceptable. Frye threw an interception in the endzone, and still has shown that he stares down receivers and cannot read a defense even in practice. I dont care who it is, we need to get a capable qb in there as soon as possible or we are going to be relying on Jamal and the defense way too much.

Wow, that is exactly opposite of what Chris Mortenson has said about Frye's performance thus far in camp.

And you expect a rookie to work miracles? I sure don't. I want him in so he can get all the reps possible and get as prepared as possible so he can start as soon as he's capable.
IMO he has to start the 2nd half of the year, after the bye week if possible, we can't go into next year and expect to be anything without him getting quality playing time. I wanted him in week one but obviously that has to be re-adjusted at this point.
And I dunno what you've been watching, but we're gonna be relying on Jamal Lewis and the defense all year regardless of who the QB is...unless the two competing veterans pull a Drew Brees. IMO that's not gonna happen, although I'd love to see it because it means playoff potential for us.

Wow, how your tune has changed about QBs. You are saying not to expect a rookie to work miracles after stating you knew Frye sucked after "one play" as a starter. You continue to destroy any credibility you EVER had....before pimping Troy Smith with the #3 pick and all the other absurd statements about QB, that is. As I said in another thread. Mortenson said Frye is looking good and that the QB situation is "bringing the best out of him". If he does start and is successful, I am DEMANDING an apology from you printed in the Plain Dealer.

No doubt to a degree...I just read the trashing of Quinn and know it isn't just him.
Voidable years...whatever the case might be, if the Browns showed the same conviction at the table as they did on draft day, the deal would be done.

I Dont Think Romeo Has Till The Bye Week To Put Brady In If Frye Falters And Does Horrible If Game 3 Rolls Around and Quinn Understands This Offense, I Can See Him Coming In That Early Dont Let Bad QB Play Hinder The Growth Of This Team, Even If It Means Putting Quinn in Week 3

Sometimes you really crack me up. Seriously! Of course "I don't know". That's why we're here "guessing". And I'm pretty much "guessing" exactly the same thing you are. IF it is and I THINK it ia based on incentives and bonuses paid WHEN he performs,he expects to be paid like it. Which would probably be years 3-5. Who knows? But IF that's the case,I think it's reasonable. Now I didn't "blast" anybody accept those blasting Quinn without really having a clue what's going on. And I don't either. But I seriously doubt it's about "base salary" early on. Or the "major bonus garuntees" early on. Could it be? Yes. But it doesn't sound logical. So go ahead and blast away. But keep in mind,we're just giving things "our best guess" and don't "claim" to know the answers. Just giving opinions. And yours is that as well. Which makes it no more valuable than anyone elses. Are you serious? You're worse than Mensa.
#9 was not a rookie, it was his 2nd year after getting 5 starts and claiming he's a "totally different player than when he was a rookie."
And when have I EVER, and I mean EVER said Quinn was gonna work miracles? I merely said I think he'd give us the best chance to win, even as a rook.
5 years from now if this site still exists, will you STILL be mentioning Troy Smith in every reply to my posts?
It's crazy to expect a rookie to carry a team. I'm not ignorant. Likewise, I said LOOKING BACK, I knew on that first third down where he dropped back and held the ball that we were in for a long season. I should have known, I made excuses to my brother and my dad and anyone else who wanted to listen. I finally realized he just wasn't that good.
Get your facts straight.

Keep rewriting history, Ammo. What you said was that SITTING THERE WATCHING THAT PLAY was when you "knew" that Frye would suck. NOW you are claiming that it was later on and looking back. Frye was still a first year starter no matter how you slice it. You hate him, we all get it....and from what's been said it's over something as childish as him not signing an autograph for you. Yes, I probably will still be mentioning you pimping a FIFTH ROUND DRAFT CHOICE to be taken with the #3 pick every time you trash one of our QBs or act like you have any type of knowledge about the position. For you to tell ANYONE to get their facts straight when every time you post it is full of complete and utter crap is beyond laughable. Go buy Football for Dummies.....it will expand YOUR knowledge of the game and the "facts" by light years.

I dont know where I said that Frye sucked after one play as a starter. I am not sayin a rookie will do this. Im sayin i want brady to get in to camp. I was just giving my observations from camp. Im saying overall the play of the quarterbacks was subpar. I think the more Quarterbacks we have in camp the more the competition will help the two in contention for the starting spots.

If Its Been Posted, Yell At Me... http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/peter_king/07/31/quinn/index.htmlWhere's Brady? Browns QB blowing his chance, other NFL debates Posted: Tuesday July 31, 2007 5:10PM; Updated: Tuesday July 31, 2007 6:41PM The other day at Browns camp in Berea, Ohio, I kept hearing over and over from fans and people in the organization: Where is Brady Quinn? It's a good question. Every year, holdouts are a way of life in the NFL, particularly with the rookies in the first round. My theory is we spend far too much time on a story that never goes away and never interests anyone. But the Quinn story is a little bit different because, after he was drafted 22nd overall by Cleveland, it was widely assumed his experienced agent, Tom Condon, would want the Notre Dame quarterback to get paid far better than the slot for the No. 22 pick. There's some logic there because Quinn performed better his last two years at Notre Dame than a guy who you'd normally see get taken in the 20s. But the slot is the slot. And the Browns are not paying him like the No. 11 pick just because they had him graded far better than No. 22. It isn't just the front office that's frustrated with Quinn. Players are usually business-will-be-business guys, but I got a sense a few of his teammates think Quinn is out of mind for not being in camp. And he shouldn't expect a welcome mat whenever he arrives. After one minicamp practice in the spring, veteran nose tackle Ted Washington, whose role, in part, is to put rookies in their place, yelled at Quinn for being such an attention magnet. "Remember, you ain't done nothing yet," Washington hollered. Spirit of the team stuff, yes. But pointed and with meaning. I'm told the Browns and Condon are extremely close on the dollar amount in the contract, with only structure and early guaranteed money now standing in the way. It's at times like this when an intelligent player such as Quinn needs to make a call to his agent and say: "Whatever we're arguing about right now in terms of structure isn't worth it. I need to be in camp and I need to be in camp yesterday." Compounding the problem is that Quinn did an autograph show in Cleveland earlier this summer and charged $75 per autographed photo. Talk about rubbing the locals the wrong way. That, combined with this ill-advised holdout, led one Browns insider to tell me the team wouldn't be surprised when Quinn finally reported to training camp. There would probably be a segment of fans on hand that would boo him. It's absolutely amazing that Quinn, who could have run for mayor in May, now would be lucky to get elected dog-catcher. Bottom line: The Browns would love to serve up on a silver platter the quarterback job to this Ohio golden boy, but he's probably within two or three days of getting so far behind, it would be hard for him to catch up and earn the starting job before midseason.

10-12 rounder
The problem arises with the owners of teams with the 13 through 21 picks. None of the 1st round picks will want less money than a player picked Behind them, and more importantly to the teams, next year's 22nd pick will want More than Brady gets!! This is a very bad precedent to set!!! Brady should get a little more than last year's 22nd pick!!! JMHO Go Brownies!!!

Manny Lawson - LB - #22 pick in 2006 5 years 8.515 million Haven't found his guaranteed money
Aaron Rogers - #24 pick in 2005 - note he wasn't the #22 pick but is a QB 5 years 7.7 million 5.4 million guaranteed Contract could be worth as much as 30 million if Rogers met all incentives
JP Losman - #22 pick in 2004 5 years 7.7 million 5.6 million guaranteed Contract could go as high as 24.5 million if Losman met all incentives
If BQ is getting 8 million guaranteed he should be happy.
This years #18 - 8.2 million guaranteed This years #20 - 8.0 million guaranteed This years #21 - 7.1 million guaranteed This years #24 - 6.0 million guaranteed

I don't want to throw fuel on the fire cause it's true there are many who just dislike him...why? I don't it might be a ND vs. OSU thing who knows.
But I too am upset with what he has said...and now Jon Clayton the Steeler fan is supporting his holdout - Quinn holdout good...Browns bad. But he's an outright Steeler fan who hates the Browns - he is feeding Quinn to think its good to hold out. He is making a career move cause the fans will drive him out and make him a bust as he makes mistakes his first two seasons as a starter just like every QB and the Clayton's will be the first ones to use the "B" word around him again cause he's a Steeler fan abusing his media powers.
But regardless - I am upset with him and this is why.
""I'd love to be there competing for the starting job," said Quinn, who has missed the first four days of camp. "But it's a long contract, and I have to make sure it's fair in the event I become the starter."
Its not #22 money he's objecting to. Its like...whoa there is a good chance I'll be a starting NFL QB come year 3 - 5 of the contract. After his 6 mil signing bonus basically he's going to get 1-3 million base salary in those years and he wants to be paid like an ALL STAR QB. Of course Frye is starting his 2nd year and he's making 437 grand or there abouts.
But what about Wright....shouldn't he hold out on those same premises....Year 3 n 4 of his contract he'll be making less than a mil and yet a starting cover corner...heck they make almost as much as ProBowl QBs. His reasoning is absurd - Joe Thomas is going to get his money but thats cause he was slotted at #3. The fact is Quinn is looking for Top 10 money as if any QB taken in the draft who ends up being a starter deserves Top 10 Money! But he has it all wrong - he sights Leinart cause Zona caved in but at least Leinart was a top 10 pick (or was it 11?) but it was still wrong for Zona to cave in. But Leinart knew he could enter the draft and fact is he was not enamored with Zona so if he skipped the year and re-entered the draft so what...it was a weak QB class supposedly for 07 he would have been maybe #1.
But they (the media) act like its our fault and treat the Browns like the Raiders who are just stupid for not signing Russell yet but Russell isn't asking for much more than what his slot deserves. Fact is we don't know what we have offered...but in the history of our picks we have been more than fair in our offers especially when #21 is signed before him. He has come out that he's just looking out for Pro-Bowl QB starting money. Cause the conception that a 3 year starter makes 5-8 mil is erroneous. Brees didn't make it of course he was about 11 picks after Quinn...he is just fine now with his 2nd contract. And more than likely if he's our Franchise QB we would be working on an extention between years 4 and 5 anyway. The only way we wouldn't is if he is Bust.
He is getting bad advise - I was creaming when we picked the kid but right now I have a bitter taste in my mouth and it might be a long time before I forgive him. And I'm the Friggen Orange Glasses - everything is Hunky Dory guy. What happens with the sour pusses? His first two years he will make mistakes...I'm telling you the fans will hound him relentlessly unless we are in the Super Bowl.

"Yes. Guaranteed."
You really think they let him walk out of Berea with his playbook? Yes, Guaranteed??? Can you go into detail on your Guarantee? If so I have no problems saying my bad. But I find it hard to believe.
The guy may never be signed or heard from again??? He would be traded and I'm sure by some CBA thing would have to turn in his Playbook but what happens if he returns into the draft and never becomes a Brown. I just find it hard to believe he has the playbook. He could have worked with Frye or Anderson after OTA's and study with them...or Dorsey. I just don't think he would have the Playbook outside of Berea until he becomes a Brown officially signed!

IF he is an "all star QB" and IF he is leading this team,he WILL be compensated as much at LEAST based on incentives or he will NOT be here. If that IS the hold up.I don't blame him. I wouldn't risk "playing and performing" like a top 10 NFL QB while not getting paid for it. I don't promote that as "garuntees" UNLESS they're "based on incentives". But if they are? More power to the kid!
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Caldawg: I echo everything you said in spades. We will do just fine with Charlie for now. I too think BQ is our qb of the future, but the future ain't now,and Quinn is worried more about Condon, and himself than he is about the Browns, so... Let's kick some butt, Charlie... C'ya in a year or so, Quinn.

j/c Many people here are frustrated that he's not in camp learning to become our savior. reasons: We've already invested a lot in him no matter what the contract turns out to be (no 1st round pick next year...) The guys picked ahead of him and behind him have found a way to get themselves to work on time. He signed autographs as a Brown...but really isn't one yet....and is talking to the media like the love of the game is a distant 2nd to the almight dollar. OK...the fact is that the dollar in football IS more important these days than it used to be when I was a kid. The game has changed in that guys jump teams constantly looking for the $$ (and only occasionally for a chance at a ring). Football is more of a business. There's less loyalty on both sides (players and management). I don't blame him for trying to get everything he (they) think he can. You only go around once in this life. But he should just SHUT UP ABOUT IT. If he's gotta talk to the media then just tell 'em how hard you're working and that you're telling 'Condom' to hurry up and get it done. - He obviously doesn't realize that he's dealing with 'once proud' fans. Us long time fans remember being respected fans of a solid winning team and organization...and we DON'T LIKE what's happened to the aura of our team...and we're liable to blame it on anything.

He said he doesn't know if he will still reach his goal of starting the opener Sept. 9, "but I still plan to start this season," he said.
I don't mind the holdout that much.
It's good to be confident, but something about this kid is starting to bother me, like he's already annointed himself the BMOC.
Even right after the draft, when asked if he's got the Dolphins game circled on the schedule because they took Ginn, he said, "I've got the whole schedule circled."
Um hey Brady, you might want to win the starting job first. Check that, you might want to get to camp first.
I hope Frye starts taking it personally, and ups his game.
I agree, I sense a little bit of smugness behind him but I guess that ma be only natural for a rookie of his staus?
It is only natural for someone to want to ge the best deal, and Brady knows Condon has plenty of nfl experience under his belt so he's leaving it up to him. But there's always that other part of me that asks, if this was your favorite team wouldn't you say I want that deal, let's go?
But yeah, this isn't NCAA anymore and you're not at Notre Dame where you have the #1 job, get it done already man!
Find what you love and let it kill you.

and who wanted to play for their favorite team would sign for 12 million in gaurentees and a 18 million dollar contract rather than hold out for 13 million in gaurentees and a 19 million contract.
what would u care to wager this isn't the holdup???? i will bet ANYTHING U LIKE this is not the holdup ... ANYTHING ...
let me know ..
Well Diam the exact gaurentee or the total dollar amount may not be the holdup. It could be the length of the contract or a number of other things. (For some reason Randy and Phil won't return my calls and fill me in on this one ) The point IS that BQ could sign today and be a rich man who will make more money at a very young age than 95 percent of the people ever make in a lifetime. He can sign NOW and be Rich, or he can hold out for another day/week/month and be a little richer. If Brady really wanted to be signed and in camp right now he could be.

OK somebody correct me if I am wrong here, BUT if my memory still works, I recall Brady saying on draft day that he realized his money would not be made in his first contract, but in his second one, and that he wanted to be in camp on time.

That is all fine and dandy from our perspective of the poor populace...but I highly doubt that any of us would take a job that pays us half as much to do the same work as others in your field. No way in heck am I going to take a Database Administrators job for 40K - 50K a year(which is not destitute) when everyone else in the industry is making 80K to well into the 6 figures...You ask some guy on the street and he would think you are out of your mind for turning that money down...
Now obviously we don't have the numbers seing discussed....So I find it hard to blame one side or the other and and so I prefer to blame them ALL
I thought I was wrong once....but I was mistaken...
What's the use of wearing your lucky rocketship underpants if nobody wants to see them????
