Excellent. really like Clevinger, and think that he wil develop into a #2-3 quality starter.
As much as I respect the work that Tomlin had done for this team, I find myself hoping that Merritt will win the final spot in the rotation. I would hate to lose Merritt because he's out of options. Tomlin could go to the bullpen, as he has done in the past .... or we could trade him. He is almost 33, and has had injury issues. Maybe being in the bullpen, as a mid/long reliever could help extend his career.

Record - very good Hits allowed per inning pitched - fantastic Strike-outs - fantastic ERA - very good WHIP - good Average number of homers allowed - not so good ( almost one homer allowed per 9 innings) Average number of walks allowed - very bad (~4 1/2 walks per 9 innings)
Walks + Homers =
If he bumps up his game, he wont be a #4 starter long.
One other thing about Clevinger that isn’t in the stats.
On July 25, 2017 in the first inning against the California Angels,
Clevinger started the game by striking-out (swinging) Yunel Escobar and Mike Trout. Then Albert Pujols hit a pop-up to the catcher.
Nice start.
Then Angels Manager Mike “I’ll have another burger” Scioscia complained to the umpire about Clevinger’s glove color. And Clevinger was forced to use an unfamiliar glove from then on. (Clevinger’s glove had some gray tint to it)
Obviously mind games to derail Clevinger. (“Baseball is 90% mental” - Yogi)

Francona, on launch angle: "Kluber's throwing down and away. If you're trying to get the ball up in the air, then the next thing you should start thinking about is exit velocity. And that's how fast you're going to leave the batter's box and go back to the dugout."

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Francisco Mejia tried his hand at third base during the Arizona Fall League after last season ended. Now, the Indians plan on having the highly touted catching prospect get some experience in the outfield during Minor League camp and early in the season with Triple-A Columbus.
Indians manager Terry Francona wanted to make something clear, though.
"He's a catcher," Francona said.
I'll be honest with ya ; don't like moving the kid around ! ! Put him behind the plate and get him readdy for the bigs ! !
He's too good a hitter to catch every day. Catchers get old legs a lot sooner than other position players from all the up-and-down and all the squatting. He'll have a longer, more productive career if he can catch about a 100 games a year, and play the rest either in the OF, or at 3B, 1B, or DH.
I agree with Dave on playing time for sure .. If the kid was more of a finished product behind the plate ( handling pitchers )I wouldn't mind so much .. Next time Francona ( I call him Frank ) and I sit down and talk , I plan on bringing this up !
Opening day Bench Bench: Rajai Davis, Melvin Upton Jr., Giovanny Urshela For the earlier predictions, the three players listed here were Abraham Almonte, Erik Gonzalez and Upton. Almonte was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Sunday, taking him out of the outfield mix. The utility job race between Gonzalez and Urshela remains too close to call, but Urshela been on a tear at the plate (.520 average and 1.418 OPS in 12 games) and has shown the ability to handle second and short, along with third. For the outfield, the three lefty-swinging starters could use some right-handed complements, especially if Brantley needs some days off built in early on. That makes it possible for both Davis and Upton (non-roster invitees) to both make the roster.
We have quiet a battle going on in camp for the utility spot on the bench " Urshela, Gonzalez set for battle over utility spot" Both are great gloves .. Urshela is having a super spring at the plate batting 500 ..
The Indians hit Grand Slam homers #6 and 7 of Spring Training today. Yon Gomes has 2 of them.

Our newspaper is going way out of its way to cover Reds ball with all the bias they can get in print. HUGE articles out of Dayton are cut and pasted for Springfield. No Tribe. WILL run burning articles like the Rockies and Nationals. Not even AL.
Thanks for giving the Indians some mention, because our paper doesn't do articles on The Land much unless negative. Some Cavs, unbalanced for Browns in season, but really biased to Cincy. By biased, I mean more articles, more length per articles, and more frequency of this snub. I pay as much for my paper as the fans they have chosen to cater to, but it is lousy for an Ohio pro sports fan.
Point being after that rant, I really appreciate being able to read some stuff on the Tribe and Cavs. Really! Thanks for doing that, posters. I am amazed at how self-serving papers have become.

Francona: Upton had an out and they informed him he wouldn't make MLB roster. Told him to pursue major-league job, but if can't find an opportunity, they'd like to revisit him returning on minor league deal.
I thought they had already signed Upton to a minor league deal? Seems kind of odd to bring him in on a deal that would let him out if he didn't make an MLB roster when they have so many outfielders already.

League rules require teams to release veteran players (6 years or more in the League) signed to a minor league deal at minimum 5 days prior to the start of the season or he gets added to the MLB roster. Otherwise, the team owes the player a $100k bonus.
Veteran minor league allow teams to bring players in with very low risk. They do not have to guarantee their contracts nor do they have to add them to their 40-man rosters.
The Indians have no reason to actually have Upton play in the minors. Nor would Upton want to be stuck in the Indians minor league system. Veteran minor-league deals allow MLB teams to bring a player in for basically a tryout and the veteran player to be released the option to sign with another team.
Indians won again today, 5-4 over San Francisco. 2 more homers by Yonder Alonso, now has 5 for the spring. Josh Tomlin with 5-2/3 innings, beat Johnny Cueto. Our 5th starter beat their #2. Looking good.
