Several of the hats Kipnis signed after hitting his fifth spring homer in the Indians' 6-2 victory over Milwaukee on Sunday had the ASU logo.

His fifth homer, a two-run liner to right field.

Hands in, head of the bat to the ball.

Five games, 14 at-bats, eight hits, five homers.

An interesting stat in yesterday's Tribe win:

67 pitches (in 9 innings? - that's what the ESPN box score says)
62 strikes

Only 5 pitches that were called balls?

The entire game?

If this is right, Francona must be telling his pitchers: "DON'T GET FANCY. JUST THROW STRIKES! EVERY PITCH!"

Francona is a master at developing young pitchers.

The Indians are gonna contend as long as he's the head coach. I hope it's for a very long time.

Tomlin could go to the bullpen, as he has done in the past .... or we could trade him. He is almost 33, and has had injury issues. Maybe being in the bullpen, as a mid/long reliever could help extend his career.

Clevinger had both some tantalizing stats and some scary stats last year.

Record.... IP.... H.. . BB... SO... ERA... WHIP...HRs (allowed)

12-6..….121.2...92....60...137...3.11....1.249….13

Record - very good
Hits allowed per inning pitched - fantastic
Strike-outs - fantastic
ERA - very good
WHIP - good
Average number of homers allowed - not so good ( almost one homer allowed per 9 innings)
Average number of walks allowed - very bad (~4 1/2 walks per 9 innings)

Walks + Homers =

If he bumps up his game, he wont be a #4 starter long.

Francona's a genius.

One other thing about Clevinger that isn’t in the stats.

On July 25, 2017 in the first inning against the California Angels,

Clevinger started the game by striking-out (swinging) Yunel Escobar and Mike Trout. Then Albert Pujols hit a pop-up to the catcher.

Nice start.

Then Angels Manager Mike “I’ll have another burger” Scioscia complained to the umpire about Clevinger’s glove color. And Clevinger was forced to use an unfamiliar glove from then on. (Clevinger’s glove had some gray tint to it)

Obviously mind games to derail Clevinger. (“Baseball is 90% mental” - Yogi)

Clevinger weathered this incident superbly.

Nice temperament.

Man, Kip has his 6th home run in 6 games.

He needs to save some for the regular season. wink

Thanks Milk. A great use of 20 minutes! (I'm a slow reader)

Tito Francona is a certain HOF! He's the Bill Belichick of MLB.

Tribe fans are very lucky Cleveland has him as their head coach.

He turns 59 next month. We better appreciate him while he's still coaching. It might only be a few more years.

I hope he can break that powerful curse in my lifetime.

My favorite Indian. It was sad watching him play hurt. Hope he makes it back 100%. Love that guy!

Francona, on launch angle: "Kluber's throwing down and away. If you're trying to get the ball up in the air, then the next thing you should start thinking about is exit velocity. And that's how fast you're going to leave the batter's box and go back to the dugout."

Very interesting. I wonder why so soon. The Columbus Clippers don't start until April 6th. And there's still two weeks of MLB spring games.

If Mejia tears-up AAA ball, the Indians will be forced to do something with him at the major league level.

Great problem to have. I'm sure Francona has put a lot of thought into the best way to deal with this.

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Francisco Mejia tried his hand at third base during the Arizona Fall League after last season ended. Now, the Indians plan on having the highly touted catching prospect get some experience in the outfield during Minor League camp and early in the season with Triple-A Columbus.

Indians manager Terry Francona wanted to make something clear, though.

"He's a catcher," Francona said.

He's too good a hitter to catch every day. Catchers get old legs a lot sooner than other position players from all the up-and-down and all the squatting. He'll have a longer, more productive career if he can catch about a 100 games a year, and play the rest either in the OF, or at 3B, 1B, or DH.

You know what? I think that's exactly what Francona's doing.

Of course I'm only conjecturing (I chose bookkeeping over managing in the bigs. You know, the stability and steady paycheck. Good dental.)

But I'm thinking Francona's developing a deeper understanding of the game in Mejia.

An innate sense of what's going on in the field while behind the plate.

I agree with Dave on playing time for sure .. If the kid was more of a finished product behind the plate ( handling pitchers )I wouldn't mind so much .. Next time Francona ( I call him Frank ) and I sit down and talk , I plan on bringing this up !

Opening day Bench
Bench: Rajai Davis, Melvin Upton Jr., Giovanny Urshela
For the earlier predictions, the three players listed here were Abraham Almonte, Erik Gonzalez and Upton. Almonte was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Sunday, taking him out of the outfield mix. The utility job race between Gonzalez and Urshela remains too close to call, but Urshela been on a tear at the plate (.520 average and 1.418 OPS in 12 games) and has shown the ability to handle second and short, along with third. For the outfield, the three lefty-swinging starters could use some right-handed complements, especially if Brantley needs some days off built in early on. That makes it possible for both Davis and Upton (non-roster invitees) to both make the roster.

This made me giggle. Francona is hysterical sometimes.

I may have actually chortled a bit.

This is a very good indication that Kluber's still got plenty of gas in the tank.

His line yesterday:

................IP...H...BB..SO...R...Game WHIP
Kluber,,,,,,,,5....1....1....4....0.... .40

Kluber's known for pitching the same whether it's the 9th inning of the 7th game of the World Series...or...batting practice.

He's in mid-season form now. He's justifiably a preseason Cy Young favorite.

I have so much faith in Francona, that there's no doubt in my mind he'll make the best move under the circumstances.

Both with a short-term (let's win it all this year) and a long-term (let's win it all every year) view.

Hey will Matt Belisle make the the team?

He was pretty good.

He has one of the most amazing season stats I’ve ever seen for a middle reliever.

In 2011:

IP…GS(games started)......W
74..........0…………..………...10

It’s almost impossible to win ten games in 74 innings.

PS. He’s 37 years old. He’s probably just here to pitch in spring training.

Come on!

They didn't even bother taking a new picture of him. They just changed his hat (he pitched for the Twins last year).

Uhh..I..I don't think he's gonna stick.

Indians played a pair of split squad games today.

Indians 11
Cubs 4

Indians 16
Mariners 3

Gotta stop all of these squeakers. rofl

The Indians hit Grand Slam homers #6 and 7 of Spring Training today. Yon Gomes has 2 of them.

Go, Tribe. Wahooo!

Our newspaper is going way out of its way to cover Reds ball with all the bias they can get in print. HUGE articles out of Dayton are cut and pasted for Springfield. No Tribe. WILL run burning articles like the Rockies and Nationals. Not even AL.

Thanks for giving the Indians some mention, because our paper doesn't do articles on The Land much unless negative. Some Cavs, unbalanced for Browns in season, but really biased to Cincy. By biased, I mean more articles, more length per articles, and more frequency of this snub. I pay as much for my paper as the fans they have chosen to cater to, but it is lousy for an Ohio pro sports fan.

Point being after that rant, I really appreciate being able to read some stuff on the Tribe and Cavs. Really! Thanks for doing that, posters. I am amazed at how self-serving papers have become.

Roster moves:

- Yandy Diaz, Eric Haase, Eric Stamets optioned to AAA
- Brandon Barnes, Preston Claiborne, Stephen Fife, Cam Hill, Neil Ramirez, Richie Shaffer reassigned to minor league camp
- Ryan Hanigan and Melvin Upton Jr. released

https://twitter.com/TJZuppe/status/975769936822874112

Francona: Upton had an out and they informed him he wouldn't make MLB roster. Told him to pursue major-league job, but if can't find an opportunity, they'd like to revisit him returning on minor league deal.

I thought they had already signed Upton to a minor league deal? Seems kind of odd to bring him in on a deal that would let him out if he didn't make an MLB roster when they have so many outfielders already.

League rules require teams to release veteran players (6 years or more in the League) signed to a minor league deal at minimum 5 days prior to the start of the season or he gets added to the MLB roster. Otherwise, the team owes the player a $100k bonus.

Veteran minor league allow teams to bring players in with very low risk. They do not have to guarantee their contracts nor do they have to add them to their 40-man rosters.

The Indians have no reason to actually have Upton play in the minors. Nor would Upton want to be stuck in the Indians minor league system. Veteran minor-league deals allow MLB teams to bring a player in for basically a tryout and the veteran player to be released the option to sign with another team.

The Indians have scored the most runs in spring training and have the best run differential.

Not sure if it really means much but I thought it was an interesting stat.

Indians won again today, 5-4 over San Francisco. 2 more homers by Yonder Alonso, now has 5 for the spring. Josh Tomlin with 5-2/3 innings, beat Johnny Cueto. Our 5th starter beat their #2. Looking good.
