Let me play the contrarian for a moment. Taylor has played and won in the NFL. None of the others have even taken a snap. Taylor has put together some decent numbers in the league, and won more than he lost. Why do we insist he’s only going to be a bridge? I don't think that's too contrarian. But I don't think that anybody is going into this thinking that he's doing anything more than keep a seat warm either. A talented rookie is going to get a chance to show what he's got when he's ready.

It depends on what people mean by bridge QB. The length of time Tyrod keeps the rookie QB on the bench will be determined by how he plays and whether or not the teams wins when he plays. If Tyrod plays well then he could keep the rookie on the bench the whole season. But at the end of the season he may be in the Alex Smith predicament where the organization is ready to see their rookie QB.

our QB draft plans do not change. Vers if Rosen's only benefit is he was the most ready to start then we wont take him. We will still take our guy. If we think its Rosen it still is. If its Mayfield it still is.
Dorsey is doing an excellent job n FA hasnt started yet...lol Probably our feelers with AJ was he was going to want too much.
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

Taylor is not a bridge QB he is 28. I'm betting the front office and the coaches view him as a long term solution. We won't be drafting a an in the first. My money is on Barkley and fitz as the first two picks.

Furthermore... if Taylor was a bridge QB... we would have kept Kizer. Pretty sure Kizer had a season to display his abilities and that's what the Browns wanted to see of him before the 2018 draft. So, Taylor is the bridge QB and this draft will predict the rookie QB that is thus the future of the franchise. The contract will speak volumes as to what Taylor is and idk if that's his 6 mil contract we pick up or an extension of it for whatever the Browns deem worthy.

Will anyone here want Tyrod to ride the bench if he leads the Browns to the playoffs like he did the Bills? This could lead into a very interesting trade on day 1 between the Browns and the Bills. If the Bill offer their two first round picks this year and their first next year then you could well see the Browns trading out of 1 or 4. They would then be in a perfect place to draft Mason, Lamar, or Allen at 21 before the Steelers would land them. There would be no need to rush them to start after drafting them there. The Browns pick up 2 extra first round pics plus a second rounder most likely too and maybe even this pick we just sent them for Tyrod.
I would be thrilled if this trade became a reason we ended up with Mason. We would be in a prime spot also to draft Washington with him so they could maintain that great chemistry or even Courtland who I think is the best WR in this draft. It would make our receiving corps a very dangerous one to say the least especially if we landed Saquan at #4.
The thought of fielding some combination of Gordon, Landry, Coleman, Courtland or Washington, Nojoku, Saquan, or Duke on the field at any given moment literally sends chills down my spine. Can a QB even fail with talent like that on offense? My Goodness!!!

Taylor can easily finish a 5 year contract at a high level. We wouldn't pay 14.5 mill for Taylor go play 3/4 of a season before turning the reigns over to a rookie. Also if we draft a QB.. fans will be calling for him by game 2. The front office thinks we can win a lot of games now so they are getting more pieces to help win now. Jmho

Taylor can stabilize the position and give the rookie some time, but no one in the NFL is counting on him to be a long term solution.

IF the front office views him as the long term solution, I bet we go Barkley and then trade out of 4 for a QB needy team.
Not saying that's my choice, just IF they view TT as the answer
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

We broke the NFL trade machine today, need to comprehend words for now,
It messes up my plan for drafting Barkley 1 and Fitzpatrick 4. This guarantees a QB at 1 or 4, when I wanted players

I agree w/you. However, I think the signing of TT indicates that we aren't taking Rosen. That saddens me. But, I'm used to it. I don’t see how trading for Taylor changes our plans for drafting a QB. If Rosen was our target last week, he still is now. Maybe he sits a bit, that’s not the worse thing. Just my opinion. Best part of this trade is McCarron is out of the picture. Taylor is actually a bridge QB. McCarron would have been a “we hope is a bridge QB” Yeah. Vers. You're putting way to much emphasis on this Rosen is NFL READY. It don't matter. If we like Rosen the best, he's our pick. I'm going to be severely SCARRED if we end up with Taylor and MAYFIELD. That's gonna take me a LONG TIME to get over and adjust to. Best part of Taylor is his Contract Automatically Voids after this year. Taylor, Rook, Hogan looking like our QB room this year. I'd almost like to see us STILL go after Chase Daniels. If for nothing else, in 2019 we still have a Vet on the roster. 2018 Rook, Daniels, whoever.

My money is on Barkley and fitz as the first two picks. I think this is a possibility that we really should take some time to consider. As people have pointed out; QB - Tyrod Taylor RB - Saquon Barkley, Duke Johnson WR - Josh Gordon, Jarvis Landry, Corey Coleman TE - David Njoku OL - Thomas, Bitonio, Tretter, Zeitler, Coleman The biggest complaint about that situation is that Taylor isn't an elite. Everything else is incredibly exciting. It suits Taylor's strengths while giving him, in my opinion, the best OL and receiver group he's ever been with. The running game could also be excellent; especially if the Browns can add some additional talent to the existing team. Taylor isn't a bad quarterback, and he's been playing on a team that is by no means a juggernaut around him. When they had Watkins and Woods, Taylor was a much better quarterback. The Bills also haven't exactly constructed an offense around him. It isn't tailored to his strengths. He was a Pro-Bowler in 2015 and holds multiple Bills records, including most consecutive passing attempts without an interception. Perhaps most important is that Dorsey showed he was willing to construct a team around an efficient quarterback like Alex Smith, who joined Kansas City as a less productive and less solidified quarterback. They're surprisingly similar - they don't throw for the most yards or touchdowns, but they're highly efficient. At this stage, I highly doubt the intention is to build around Taylor long-term. Far more likely he's a stopgap to give the team some continuity (This new-look Browns should win enough to avoid firings) and allow a rookie to be eased in. It isn't out of the realms of possibility that Dorsey is willing to load up around Taylor, however.

Until next week if we don't sign Tre Boston, I'm still going Darnold or Rosen and Minkah-Fitzpatrick.
Replace Barkley with Guice or Keryon.

Jmho Why not pay $14.5 mil for a decent QB? We paid more than that to add Osweiller (and the 2nd round pick) last year. The money is meaningless at this point, because our future QB will be on a rookie deal. The Browns are in position to secure their future at the most important position in this coming draft. You don't mess around with that. You go get the best player at the most important position in the NFL.

Replace Barkley with Guice or Keryon. I'm right there with you. Honestly, I love Barkley, but this is such a great RB draft. There is going to be guys there in the second or third that would be excellent additions to the roster - especially when they'll already split reps with Duke Johnson. I'm also a big Minkah Fitzpatrick fan. I'm tired of reading about trading down away from a guy like him. My plan is unchanged: Rosen, Fitzpatrick. I might consider moving back to 5th or 6th with a sizable offer, but that's only because I'm confident enough we'd still get Fitzpatrick to risk it. I like Taylor, but much as with Kizer, the quarterback positive isn't definitively solved and this is, realistically, our last chance to get the top guy. As for Fitzpatrick, I just think he's a star. That's a hell of a first round.

Bills fan as well as the Browns, remember TT had no WR last year and Clay was hurt off and on, there will be 4 or 5 plays a game he will use his speed for big plays, where 3 and 7 was auto punt he can scamble for first downs

I saw that Buffalo Jacksonville playoff game...I don't want TT. As a bridge QB he's still suspect.
17/37 134 yards and an INT
No thanks. Shaddy was hurt and no Wr on roster

note: This does not change our QB draft plans one bit.
Taylor is not our Franchise QB...he's our 2018 vet starter. We will draft our Franchise QB. Well, we will draft a QB. A few years will dictate if he is a franchise QB.

He could be our target. We still have plenty of room to trade back in to round one if necessary. Nothing says he won't use next years #1 to move up.

I like Tyrod as a bridge QB over some of the options out there but the price we paid, the 64th pick, is bad, IMO. I bet Buffalo was running to the NFL line to make sure they executed the deal. Taylor was no longer in the plans for BUF and they just got the 64th pick for him.
Not a good deal whatsoever, IMO.

I see it as a good deal for both. That's what deals are about. Other teams aren't stupid. Most of the time you have to give up something to get something.
Like I said in another post, it's clear this is about winning right out of the gate. Not infusing the team with a ton of rookies. We already have a team full of young players.
TT puts on on solid footing towards doing that.

Again, I don't think TT is a bad QB. The first pick in the third round is too much for him, IMO.
And I agree, it is all about winning again. Hopefully not at the expense at wildly getting rid of assets to do so. I think this was a scenario of overspending to get a player, even though it's a player I like. That's just me.

Barkley at 1 and Mayfield at 4. Yup, this would be my exact scenario I'd want. Got to take Barkley at #1 because he won't be there at 4.I believe Mayfield will and he is the one to take. I must admit that I have swayed back and forth on this mostly because of all the press on Barkley but I don't do it. I like Mayfield too, but I want the QB coming out with the most upside and that is not Mayfield. The Browns drive this draft and that is what they need to do, the moment they take Barkley they stop driving the draft and become passengers and that is NOT what you should do. My strategy would be as follows. #1 Take the best QB in the draft TT isn't a long term solution by any stretch. #2 I think the giants will take a QB as well, now I know many mocks have them taking Barkley I don't think so, this is a QB driven league and they are going to need a QB in the not so distant future. The giants are a steady organization they will look beyond this season and lets be honest here getting to the #2 pick in the draft is rare air so to speak you take the QB because thats where the future of your team will be decided on, not by a RB. #3 The bidding war for Indy's spot is on at this point they will move from this spot IMO they have their franchise QB already and they could look to improve their defense perhaps they take Chubs but I think they move the pick. Whoever trades up Jets or Denver IMO will take a QB. #4 That leaves the Browns to take Barkley or IMO they should take Chubs but its even more likely the Browns trade out of this spot hopefully not to far the Jets would be perfect IMO. Their a team not likely to win next year which will improve their draft position and the Browns will likely pick up their 1st next year and an additional 2nd this year. We are now driving the draft. #5-Again the Jets are going to take a QB we are 2 spots back at #6. Now before anyone goes bonkers here we are going to have to come up with a replacement for JT at some point I just insured we have ammo to do that in next years draft or even this years draft although there just isn't a tackle worthy of a 1st round pick this year. #6 That leave Denver or Indy in this spot, they need a RB and they need D help so who they take is up for grabs but that will leave us with Barkley or Chubbs, or Fitz for that matter. This strategy IMO sets the Browns up to win well into the future and we will be instantly better, as it should be but of equal importance we drive the draft board it plays out how we force it to play out to the degree that is possible. The Browns have options the moment they take Barkley assuming they do those options are over with and thats a crappy strategy IMO. Not for a RB folks never ever for a RB, or at least thats what I keep telling myself. Now I don't for a moment think the Browns are done with the QB position not just from a draft stand point but from a FA stand point. I look for the Browns to take a shot at Teddy Bridgewater, or Bradford, Taylor is an insurance policy IMO. With the injury concerns surrounding Bridgewater and Bradford, Taylor makes perfect sense as insurance and would move our drafted QB to the #3 spot. Oh and I feel certain we could get either Bridgewater or Bradford on a show me contract. Both are worlds better then TT and we would be in a win now position.

Not a good deal whatsoever, IMO. Me and Grimm talked about this scenario before the trade. I didnt think the Browns would need to trade for Tyrod either. We know Dorsey is a sharp GM that isn't going to overpay. And although everyone knows the Bills didn't want Tyrod there was a market for him. Lots of QB needy teams. If a team wanted Tyrod and didn't want to wait til FA and risk losing him they had to make an offer that another QB needy team couldn't beat.

I think overpaying/cap management for personnel has been a weakness and I think it has been brought up many times. I think this is a situation where he overpaid. The Landry deal, not at all.

I'm glad we got a vet, and I really really hope that this means we're drafting a QB at #1...
but I can't help but be a little disappointed that it's Taylor. I mean, I'm one of the people that was talking about grabbing him during last offseason... but in this year's QB-rich offseason, we got the media talking about Drew Brees listening to offers and who's gonna pay Kirk Cousins when we've got all the money... and we're over there swinging a deal for Tyrod Taylor? :-\
Meh... I like TT more than you I guess ! I see a lot of potential for him to do very well on the Browns with Gordon, Landry and a very solid OL. I know he had McCoy in Buffalo - but what was their line like? idk. . . . I meant to say - the only disappointment with the trade is giving up the 65th pick. That does seem a little on the high side. But I inclined to trust Dorsey and wait to see what happens. Sure I'd rather stump up the cash for Cousins. But I'm sure he wasn't coming based on comments I heard from Joe Thomas. Brees? He'd be an upgrade over TT - but after that most other options come with a giant risk, even guys like Foles. Personally I don't think TT makes a difference to our draft strategy .... I don't believe it's any more or less likely that we draft Rosen, Darnold, Mayfield, Jackson, Allen. Whichever Dorsey determines is THE guy is the QB we take. If Dorsey decides there is not much difference between the top 2/3 QB's and that Barclay is the elite talent in the draft - then we'll take SB and then a QB at #4 imo. And I don't see any scenario where we draft anyone other than a QB or SB with the #1 pick. jmo

Well I guess by Weds. we will know if TT In/Out Kizer was enough to keep Joe Thomas around to finish out his contract. Best guess is he was waiting to see who he'd be protecting before announcing. A knowledgeable GB will certainly lighten JT's load.

That's what my reaction is - but then I am also happy to trust Dorsey. It's going to be really interesting to see the contracts that are given to the FA QB class. I think that the the 65th pick for TT may indicate it will be silly season. If we'd given the 65 up to land Landry and the 4th rounder to pick up TT -- I wouldn't have batted an eyelid. So it is all good to me.

No problem. I think the 65th pick was too much. No problem here either, we can agree to disagree. And i get what you are saying. Ideally you would want the compensation to be less. But again, he's s starting QB in QB needy league and trading for them costs. If they mess around being frugal then Tyrod goes to the Cardinals and AJ is your QB on the 1st day of FA.

Until next week if we don't sign Tre Boston, I'm still going Darnold or Rosen and Minkah-Fitzpatrick.
Replace Barkley with Guice or Keryon. I like Minkah but I feel the Randall trade means we could be going a different direction now. I'm thinking Chubb or trade.

I agree with Peen. I think Dorsey is ecstatic. He spent a 2nd on Smith, and just got Tyrod for a 3rd. According to his plan, he wanted a viable QB to win games now. I think we got off light even considering buffalo was going to release Tyrod. Guessing part of the reason he wasn't let go is either us or someone said don't release him, we'll trade for him.
This is a good deal for both and we got a proven QB. Kinda like the Landry deal. He's not a stud either but he is proven. We are in win now mode. Which some are going to love.

With the exception of Cousins.. I think that Taylor was a better choice than any of the other FA QB options. So I have no objections to spending # 65 for Taylor when we have 5 picks higher in the draft, and no further need to overspend on a FA QB. Besides .. it may open the door to further trades with Buffalo in the draft.

We've been trading down/acquiring picks since Banner was here. I'm sick of doing that. It's time these picks turn into players contributing to a playoff run.

Take the Bills game managing cast off, give up our shot at the top QB, and trade out of the #1 pick to get more picks to accumulate more mediocre players and draft busts. Because you know that's how it would go.
