Only decision now is what # our new QB will wear. It won’t be 14.
So 5 is taken. Thank God Gonzalez went to #2 so now that number can't plague us again. We have already had 2, 3, 9, 10, and 12 as rookie starters. I hope he goes for something different.
How cool would it be for a guy to come in and take the number 19!!!
Here is the USC vs UCLA game this year. Despite playing w/an inferior team, Josh Rosen was clearly the better qb. Watch for yourself and also please not Herbrsteit's comments on the two guys throughout the game.
This video is about 3 hours long and I get that almost no one will take the time to watch it, but hey, I thought I would provide you all the opportunity.
So I didn't have 3 hours to watch the game, or else I'd love to. But here's what I did watch:
Darnold vs UCLA every throw video Rosen vs USC highlights - because I didn't see an every throw vid.
What I took away from this is that I agree with you that Rosen looked to be the better QB that day. However, I believe that to be deceiving. I think Rosen had far more time in the pocket and his OL kept him well protected. I admit though, it was just the highlight reel. What I saw on the Darnold film of that game was that he didn't have a whole lot of help from his OL. Was constantly under fire. And that wasn't a highlight reel, just what I saw.
So my question to you is, how was Rosen's protection that day? How would Darnold have looked behind Rosen's OL?
I like Rosen too, but I'd like to see what Darnold could do with time to throw.

I don't believe there'll be any shock with the number 1 pick. Then we get at 4 basically another number one waiting. All this for the organization known as the Cleveland Browns?! Clearly something is amiss...
I really wanted Wentz, but the haul we got for that pick seemed like a no-brainer for me.

Because Sam Darnold decided not to throw at the combine, his showing at the USC pro day was more highly anticipated than the rest of the quarterbacks in the 2018 draft class, and Mother Nature added more intrigue to it.
Darnold executed his scripted throwing session in front of a plethora of NFL GMs, head coaches, and scouts -- and 95 percent of it came with a steady downpour on USC's practice field.
The redshirt sophomore wasn't phased by the rain, and his passes didn't lack zip, accuracy, or a tight spiral.
NFL Network ✔ @nflnetwork The rain is coming down at @USC_Athletics' Pro Day and Sam Darnold is putting on a show.

PatMcManamon ✔ @PatMcManamon Based on observing his Pro Day on TV, Sam Darnold did nothing to hurt himself and did plenty to help himself. With Tyrod Taylor in place, I continue to believe he's going to be the No. 1 pick in the draft. http://www.espn.com/espn/now?nowId=21-0768171540163335326-4 … 1:59 PM - Mar 21, 2018
So, who, exactly was in attendance for Darnold's pro day? As you can probably imagine, the vast majority of the league was represented in some way, shape, or form on Wednesday morning, but here's an interesting nugget:
Andrew Groover @APGroover Don’t see this everyday... Browns sent their entire scouting army to LA for USC pro day: Owner Jimmy Haslam, HC Hue Jackson and new OC Todd Haley #SamDarnold 2:05 PM - Mar 21, 2018
In his post-practice interview, Darnold said he had dinner Monday night with the Giants, and Tuesday night featured dinner with the Browns. At this point, those are the only two clubs to have an official meeting with him, but many more are sure to follow. Pro days are typically safe havens for quarterbacks to operate pre-planned and rehearsed throws to familiar wide receivers, and almost all of them are indoors. With USC not having a domed practice facility featuring a full field, NFL decision-makers were afforded the luxury of seeing Darnold throw in a less-than-ideal environment.
Danny Kanell ✔ @dannykanell To be clear....this is great for the scouts - they NEVER get this opportunity to see guys throw in adverse conditions...Usually it's temperature controlled in pristine conditions. But if he throws well it could really help Darnold 1:54 PM - Mar 21, 2018
At the combine, the consensus started to form that Josh Allen could be heading to the Browns at No. 1 overall. Over the past few days, that consensus has shifted to Darnold being selected with the first pick, and he definitely did not hurt himself at his pro day.
While Darnold did look very good during today's workout, to me pro days are vastly overrated. However, that doesn't mean they fail to create buzz leading into the draft, and Darnold's has done that.
My issues with Darnold stem from areas of his game that don't pop up during a pro day workout. He has a strange, elongated delivery that disrupts timing on longer passes and provides more opportunity for strip sacks. Also, his pocket presence is still a work in progress, as his feet lead to him getting off balance when under pressure. Lastly, his interception numbers are worrisome.
Overall, Darnold's inherent skills are significantly ahead of 99.9 percent of 20-year-old, redshirt sophomore quarterbacks, and he made some of the most outrageous throws I saw in college football last season.
Where will he end up going in the draft? Obviously no one knows with any certainty at this point, but for teams that play in environments where poor weather can be an issue (read: Cleveland), Wednesday's performance certainly did nothing to hurt his draft stock.

Yeah, when was the last time a Browns owner was hobnobbing with the parents? It has to be him, there is no point in subterfuge when you're picking one.
So if Sam is the man then I purpose taking a familiar target for him. If Burnett falls to the third round or beyond why not give your young QB a familiar target to practice with and build confidence with? Burnett lacks ideal size but he’s quick, a good route runner, and has good hands. Deontay Burnett*, WR, USC Height: 6-0. Weight: 186. ArM: 31.5. Hand: 8.63. Projected 40 Time: 4.47. Projected Round (2018): 3-5. 3/10/18: Burnett totaled 86 receptions for 1,114 yards and nine touchdowns in 2017. He doesn't have great size and has a skinny build, but he is a quick receiver who is a quality route-runner. Burnett might fit best as a slot receiver in the NFL. IT RAINED ... And it was windy, too. Somewhat atypical of Los Angeles. Why does this matter at all? Well, Darnold played in mostly warm-weather settings in college, but the top-drafting, quarterback-needy teams in this draft — Browns, Giants, Jets, Broncos — all tend to play a bunch of games in crummy, windy weather.
Yeah they usually show the flag thing (sorry haha, I don't know what it's called) that shows/gives an idea of the wind gust but I can't find a full video of the workout yet. I'm sure they showed it. Even in the smallest wind though, all helps in evaluating given Ohio weather because it didn't seem to effect him and it had to been a lot of pressure there on him to perform for skipping combine...
Eh, I think he did fine. I don't put a lot of stock into these kind of things (although I watched the whole thing, to which my wife who's working from home because of this snow storm can't believe that we were watching it over lunch).
My biggest thing is that phrase that a pro-day or combine workout should never boost your stock (especially if you're a top rated guy). It can lower it, but not raise it. Lower it because teams will go back and re-evaluate your tape if you underperform. If you're an unknown prospect, pro-day and combine can get teams to take another look at you (or to look at you, period) for the better too.
He didn't lower his stock with his throwing. He passed the test. But, there's other things behind the scenes, going out to dinner with the Organization. Meeting the owner. Drawing up the playbook they sent you and explaining your football knowledge.
The one thing I will say is that he seemed extremely coached in his TV interview and he wasn't all the comfortable. But, he's only 20 years old. He just kept on talking about "trying to be himself", I feel like Jordan Palmer told him to use that line. Well he used the heck out of it. He either wasn't comfortable in the interview or he didn't seem very sharp.
But as I said, he's only 20 years old.
My list hasn't changed, nor did i expect it to. Combines and Pro-Days have had absolutely no impact. Just game film. 1) Rosen. 2) Mayfield. 3) Darnold. I'm fine with any of them though

I saw Rosen LIVE last year vs. Colorado and his talent was apparent. His WR's dropped a couple of easy balls ( even in warmups ). He fit a couple of balls across the middle into impossible windows against good corners ( Isiah Oliver is a CB many have been talking about in the early second.)
The only negative I saw from that game was that he moves like Bernie Kosar.
Rosen definitely got the better of Darnold in the rivalry game, no doubt.
However, after Darnold's pro day I have a slightly more positive view of him. I also take pro days with a grain of salt because Jamarcus Russell also had one of the best pro days ever.
Yeah, when was the last time a Browns owner was hobnobbing with the parents? It has to be him, there is no point in subterfuge when you're picking one.
Unless your guy is Allen and you want the Giants to give you a second rounder to get Darnold.
Nothing is a lock right now. We still have a month to go and I feel like almost anything can happen.
I would like to see him get comfortable with Gordon, Landry, Duke, Coleman and Njoku. Throw, throw, throw to them till he knows them inside n out. This guy is going to be our future!
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!
“It’d be awesome to go No. 1, just because I think what the Browns are doing is really good right now, and I think they have potential to be a really good team in the future,” Darnold told ESPN after his Pro Day, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “Just based on that, yeah, a part of me really wants to go one. But at the same time, if they don’t want me and they don’t pick me, that’s the best situation because I don’t want to go to a team that doesn’t want me.”
I saw his pro day too and he looked good. He definitely passes the eye test and his throws were sharp and on target even in the rain and wind. He has things to learn but remember he's the youngest of all the QB's at 20. This is why if we do draft him he has to sit a year or 2 and learn. Patience with him will be the key.

Agreed. But he’ll be practicing with the second team and the scout team. Meaning Higgins and Louis and the likes. If Burnett was added to that second tier mix it’d give Sam a familiar target while he learns the rest of the pro game.
http://breakingfootball.com/2018-nfl-draft-deontay-burnett-scouting-report/ “Burnett does his best work when working from the slot, a clean route runner who always finds a soft part of the zone. A lot of bubbles and quick screens are implemented in USCs offense but Burnett runs crisp routes with sudden breaks that creates a good amount of separation from defenders. Sam Darnold is always looking to improvise and Burnett’s field awareness allows him to adjust his route when Darnold is on the move. They have built the type of relationship that Darnold knows where Burnett is at all times.”
The Browns sent their entire scouting contingent (general manager John Dorsey, head coach Hue Jackson, offensive coordinator Todd Haley, QB coach Ken Zampese and even owner John Dorsey) to Los Angeles, while the Giants sent coach Pat Shurmur and offensive coordinator Mike Shula.

I think Darnold had far more time to throw.
What I saw is that Darnold bailed out of the pocket much too early and his lower body mechanics went to hell when pressured.
On the other hand, Rosen got rid of the ball much quicker and also stood in the face of the rush while taking hits while delivering the pass.
I really wish people would watch that game and listen to what Herbrsteit had to say about the two guys. Herbie is one analyst that knows what he is talking about.
I watched it in real time. Rosen looked dominant. I like the kid. It’s just out of my hands. If Rosen or Darnold is the choice I’ll be fine with it.
I know you probably have, but go watch the USC v OSU game. Darnold was not the reason for that loss. Yes he turned the ball over but his performance was still impressive. His ball placement in the face of an overwhelming rush was a thing of beauty. I can’t let the head to head Rosen v Darnold be the only litmus test for Rosen anymore than I can let USC v OSU be the same for Darnold.
I hear you though. Rosen looks good. He’s a great technician. He’s got a great arm. I just don’t know his mind or his health. None of us do. Those that do get to make the choice. Those that don’t...well we post on message boards. For me, this thread is a place to find hope in the talents of Darnold. So that if he is our guy I know what I can expect and who I’m rooting for.

I'm sure you know this, but Darnold was HIT 27 TIMES in the Ohio State game.
