Baker should take the spot from TT if he is what they say he is. We haven't had a QB go out and take spot in decades. At most, its been this guy doesn't really suck as bad as the other guy.
I want Taylor to be pretty damn good but Baker to be so much better that you have to play him. If he is not, then you wait. I want that as well, but I don't think it will be game 1 even if it is clear Baker is the guy. First, Hue has come out and said TT is the starter. Hue has a bad record with rookie QB's and I don't blame him for going with the vet to start the season. I don't think Dorsey is overly eager to see Baker play from game 1. It took Bernie what, 6-7 games before Gary Danielson was pulled in his favor? Baker is going to be really good IMO, but I don't blame Hue for not wanting to let him out right out of the gate. We are going to see plenty of Baker Ball over the years.

Mayfield hasn't even thrown a pass in a game yet. LOL
We've all heard TC stories about guys like Timid, BQ, Colt, Frye, Weeden, etc.
I just think the OP's intentions were to press the envelope so we have yet another reason to criticize Hue as the season plays out.
Just watch the narrative from some of these guys if Baker doesn't start and the team isn't lighting it up.
"Hue's ego is in the way."
"Hue is trying to save his job and doesn't want to develop Baker."
"Hue's is retarding Baker's progress."
"We need a coach who can recognize that Baker NEEDS TO START NOW!!!"
"Hue is starting Taylor because he's black."
LOL...........that last one might be a stretch, but some will get my point. These guys have been pulling the same crap for years. I expect Baker to be trotted out on the field at some point this year when the game isn't on the line to see what he can do and then trotted back to the bench. It would simply amaze me if Baker was able to learn enough to unseat a Vet like TT this year. The amount of stuff he needs to learn is immense. I'm actually worried that the idiot Hue will panic again and throw out another rookie before he's ready in a panic to win more games. I'll keep the brick next to my lazy boy ready to throw at the TV if he even mumbles any "gives us the best chance to win.." BS this year. If by some odd chance TT were to get hurt this year I would fully expect Stanton to trot out on the field because I don't think Baker could learn enough to play at even his level this year. That's not a knock on Baker. I believe he can be a good QB if we have enough patience and he puts in the effort. I just don't think it's all going to happen at once with this particular QB. What this QB does have going for him is hard to teach though. The teachable stuff is only a matter of time and effort.

I don't think so.
Look, I am not a big fan of Hue, but that isn't going to happen.
He is the coach. It's a new season, a new beginning.
Let's just see how things go before we start predicting bad things. I don't see any real point in that.
It's hard to stick up for the 1- 31 Hue.
That said, he is 0-0 at this point. You go from there.

Five training camp practices and the kid is doing good. How that makes him better than Taylor is beyond my comprehension. He may be, I not suggesting he isn't, but there is not way that can be assessed at this time.
Taylor is proven in actual games. He's not great by any stretch, but is very competent. Mayfield is looking good, and that is encouraging, but it is way too early to be claiming he is ready. These are practices, when the preseason rolls around, it will be a little easier to grade his progress, but even then, it is not the same as actual game experience.
I like that they are continuing to call Taylor the undisputed starter, it takes pressure off Mayfield and allows him to continue to work hard to overcome the vet. Calling for him to start because he was the #1 overall pick is a fans way of thinking. Letting him learn and earn the position is the professional way to do it.
He may end up being the starter, but then again maybe he won't. Five days into camp is not enough time to declare him rerady. You got it exactly right. Mayfield will play in the preseason. He will never have the NFL experience Tyrod has by the time we get to the opening game. I also wouldn't expect Mayfield to play with the first teams AT ALL this preseason based on what we hear from Hue. I don't think anyone is saying he should start because he's the #1 pick. Things to keep in mind, I don't think it matters how Tyrod does this year, I don't think he's going to be here next year. I get the whole if Baker's not ready stuff. I think a lot of people have already written him off as not being ready. If Baker is ready and has a better grasp of the offense than Tyrod, who would you play?

If Taylor struggles, even if it is not all on him, the lynch mob will be out in full force for Hue's head. IMO, he is not slighting Mayfield in any way. I actually feel he will benefit greatly from watching and learning. Just because he may have better skills, knowing what to do with them is just as important. This team can't afford to let another rookie learn the hard way. Taylor is here for a purpose, use him.

Can you put me in the comlum that firmly says It Is WAY TOO EARLY for fans, during camp without even pre-season games to look at, to be saying the team should do anything other than the team/party line. Way too early for this question. Go Browns!

Just to be clear, I don't want Mayfield to start. I just thought this would be an interesting thread (I think it is). I have been on the Tyrod Taylor for awhile now. I also didn't want to draft Baker Mayfield. (Tyrod Taylor thread from the 207 off-season: https://www.dawgtalkers.net/ubbthreads.php/topics/1204082/tyrod-taylor#Post1204082)

If Baker isn't making it a battle, then something is wrong. You spend a 1 overall on a qb, there should be competition but I like the fact Hue says there isn't. Baker has to create it by playing well. Baker is studding out...show me otherwise. yada yada if he doesn't beat out TT he sucks??? Huh. Says who?
The advances BM has made from OTC's to TC is excellent. I read that he's staying in the pocket longer and throwing the ball with ZIP and AMAZING ACCURACY...but ok he's a bust if he doesn't win the starting job...what kind of thought process is that?

We drafted the best quarterback with the #1 pick and everyone wants to hold him back as if sitting a quarterback is some magic formula. I would bet Baker starts a game at some point this season and that's not a bad thing. This obsession with sitting a quarterback is ridiculous. Roethlisberger, Flacco, and Dalton didn't sit and all of them led their respective teams to the playoffs.
Sitting Baker isn't going to hurt him, but it could stunt his development. And if he's properly coached, playing him isn't going to hurt or stunt his growth either. I completely disagree with you here. Some of the best QBs in the game: Brees, Brady, Rodgers, Rivers sat for over a year or more and took the time to learn the game. It's NOT going to stunt his development. If anything, you have more to risk by plugging him in early and stunting his confidence. And as I've said before, successful QBs usually come from one of three situations. They either sit and learn a system for awhile (Brady/Rivers), they get plugged into a team with a strong run game and defense where they are basically asked to not mess it up (Rothlis, Wilson, Flacco), or they just have the physical tools to power through those rough first few years (Manning, Vick, etc). We were 0-16 last year, so I'm not counting on us to be a stable system where we can just plug Baker in and say he doesn't have to carry the offense. It's not going to hurt him to sit and learn while the rest of the team itself gets some more stability. Ideally, we want all situations to be close to true to give him the best chance to succeed. I'm a big time backer of Mayfield and as long as TT is playing very good I don't mind Mayfield learning with Stanton teaching him and sticking to him like glue. He has a fire under his butt not that he needed one but he is determined to be the best.
Also keep in mind ELI was benched for what all thought was an aging Warner. Then around mid season took the rains for the next 14 seasons. Actually the change over was very controversial. TT is not considered past his prime. NEW O best time for Mayfield to sit and learn. His time will come. And when it does it will be a WALLY PIPP Moment...TT being Wally Pipp.
Man we finally got our Franchise QB...

Thanks for the blast from the past. That entire thread was interesting to re-read.
I too was in on Tyrod, but I still don't believe he's the long term answer. Like tab said, we finally have our franchise QB in Mayfield. The future looks very exciting and bright for the Browns.

I think it is going to work so I expect we won't have that problem. If we do have a problem there comes a point where Baker needs to play. It's hard to put a number on it. Game 3-4 would way early. Game 14 would be way late. I will say this. Since the plan is to go with Mayfield next year, as long as we aren't in the playoff hunt, he needs to see some reps this season. Maybe not as a starter, but also not in some mop up role. I think it is important for him to see some meaningful play time this year. I'd also like to see him get some reps with the first team in the preseason. Not to be used to unseat TT, but to show his team that he can play. Let's face it, TT probably isn't going to take every snap this year. Things happen. It could happen in game one.

After watching guys like Weeden and Kessler for a year, and even 2 years in Weeden's case, I commented that both had flaws in their game that were going to be hard to overcome. That stance was widely ridiculed because I was evaluating them much too early.
On the other hand, we have two posters declaring Baker a "franchise" QB before he even throws a pass in a game, and not a peep from those same posters.
Very interesting...

Very interesting... You're catching on. Our rookies - negative comments are not valid because it's "too soon." When there are reports of them studding out in camp, that's because they are studs and future all pros. Rookies on other teams - negative comments are valid because their draft stock was overrated and they will be busts. When there are reports of them studding out in camp, it's "too soon" to tell. Camp and pre-season mean nothing.

Very interesting... Vers. The board is filled with Browns Fans. This is a time of year with hope and excitement. The season hasn't started yet. We're undefeated. Of course when people read positive reports about the Number 1 Pick people are going to be excited and declare him the franchise. And in the past when you've pointed out flaws in the game of guys that our franchise is tied to (as was the case with Weeden, and Kessler when we didn't draft a QB at 1 or 12 last year); many folks are going to say you're wrong. Folks want to hear what we want to hear. It's like a Republican listening to Foxnews or a liberal watching MSNBC (or my wife reading articles even further left from like The Hill and Vox). Personally I was a Mayfield fan. Not my number 1 guy (Rosen), but definitely my number 2 choice ahead of Darnold and way ahead of Allen. And i'd say i ranked him right around where i had Wentz. And significantly ahead of all of last year's QBs. And when I read good things about our guy, i'm pumped. Just like everyone else, i'm so sick of losing. Of course folks get ahead of themselves on here. There's nothing wrong with that. This board is about pleasure. Especially this time of year. We've got a whole regular season for misery and awareness (although, hopefully not this year!) That said, honestly, you're a smart guy who's been around this board a very long time and i'm sure you know all this.

The Baker haters are out in full force today. Actually it's quite the opposite. Rushing a rookie before he's ready is the worst thing you can do. Having some patience with a rookie and having him properly prepared before you make him the starter is the best thing you can do for him. Not the worst. I know somehow you believe that makes everyone who disagrees with you a hater. But what it really means is that having some patience is the best possible scenario for long term success.

This is a very articulate, well thought out post. Except no one trying to rush Mayfield. There are quite a few articles out there about how slowly the Browns are taking it with Mayfield.
As for those being haters, I have read several posts here saying he should sit no matter what happens between now and the first game. It is odd to me that some people might want the best quarterback on the bench. But it's whatevs, things are looking up.

I think that I may fall into the category you are describing yet I'm not a hater. Let me explain why and what my reasoning is for feeling this way. There is a difference in being the most talented QB on the roster and the QB best suited to start NFL games. Sometimes the perception isn't the reality. As an example. Last year we won every pre season game we played. We were a team that one could say qualified to play in "The SB of the pre season". lol Nothing could be further from the truth when that transitioned into the regular season. Training camp is a pass and catch session and really not much more. We hear glowing articles and positive vibes that have nothing to do with the reality how many of those things will translate in real games. In the pre season, teams implement very basic and vanilla D's which make it very hard to determine how players will respond when they see more complicated schemes put in place to confuse them and built to combat their strengths. Yet on an annual basis I see fans overlook such things and fall for the annual deception that training camp and the pre season brings. It also has a ton to do with the situation we are currently in. We have a QB that we went out and got for a third round draft pick who has been a fairly good starter, has won just over half of his starts and doesn't turn the ball over. Now I fully understand TT's limitations. He's certainly no Tom Brady to say the least. But he was brought in for a reason and that reason was to ease Mayfield into the starting role. You can have better talent but still not be ready to execute in the NFL. I think depending on training camp and pre season as the determining factor in who you should start at QB would be fools gold. I believe you have to start the QB who has grown accustomed to the speed and competition level of the NFL first. The one who has proven he can be somewhat successful at that level. I think that's why he was brought in and that it was the plan, a sound plan from the beginning. I'm not one who really doubts that Mayfield can play at the NFL level. I do however believe that the NFL is a much more complicated system than Mayfield has ever been a part of. I believe the game is faster and has far more pressure associated with it than at any level he's ever participated in. As such, for the long term, I'm more concerned with making sure he's ready for that role than I am with rushing the process. Based on the things I've stated above and for the hopeful long term success of both the Browns and Mayfield, I would highly doubt anything could or would transpire to change my thinking on the topic.

Very interesting... You're not wrong. Baker fever is alive and kicking, and we can be very selective with when we accept and or reject any criticism or positivity surrounding a rookie. On the bright side, everything I've seen suggests Mayfield and Ward really do look good and are performing ahead of expectations. Even if it's slightly overzealous, hell, we'll take it.

You have missed the ones who were saying he was holding the ball too long then.... I don't think Baker is neither looking good nor bad, which is OK with me. I have no doubt. It's a common complaint with a rookie. I expect a rookie to look like a rookie, personally. Undoubtedly, he's going to be slow getting the ball out while he re-considers what opens means in the NFL.

I don't think Baker is neither looking good nor bad, which is OK with me. See, i read or heard something in a podcast saying that he's speeding that up every day he's out there. Everything i've heard, since training camp, has been very very positive

Everything i've heard, since training camp, has been very very positive Yeah. I have read that he is not "pat, pat, patting" the ball, and that he is very accurate, making quick decisions/throws, taking shots downfield, and improving every day. I would like to see the reports that he has been holding the ball too long.

If there has been, I want links for proof.

The one guy, who I haven't heard of before, said this in a video above in this thread, but everything else I have read/heard says that he is getting better with each practice.
One other encouraging sign is that Gregg Williams is not going to take it easy on the offense, even in practices. I remember, last year, when he was sending corner and safety blitzes in camp against our young QBs.

That's funny to those of us in the healthcare field. Cause of those Oxy's taken. lol
On a personal note. Because of the Oxy and its side effects of "Very Solid" it scratched my hidden tumor and made it bleed bringing me to the Hospital and we found the Tumor in its early stages. If this did not happen It would have been much much later when I would have discovered it.
So a very Solid BM is a good thing for me in many ways...

j/c: This is interesting. Just one reporter's opinion. Sal Paolantonio said that the #Browns would be "foolish" not to start Baker MayfieldHe says he was his top overall draft prospect and he's definitely ready right now. Sal Paolantonio joined Andy and Jeff to discuss his new book, Philly Special, as well as Browns storylines. He talked a lot about how important Cleveland Heights native Jason Kelce was to the Eagles' Super Bowl win last season. He said Baker Mayfield should definitely be the starter in Week 1. He also said Jarvis Landry is one of the top 3 receivers in the league and creating a chemistry between Landry and Mayfield right away should be their top priority. Then he said the Browns should be closing ground on the rest of the division because Baltimore and Pittsburgh's quarterbacks are on the back-end of their careers. (audio) https://923thefan.radio.com/articles/paolantonio-browns-foolish-not-start-baker-mayfield-week-1Sal Pal just told @CLETalkingHeads that Baker is absolutely ready to go, he’s a franchise QB, and compared him to Wentz. Said he should play day one and establish chemistry with Landry. https://twitter.com/SportsBoyTony/status/1025046418308964356

It's the medias job to create controversy even when there isn't any. Pal certainly didn't disappoint in that regard.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.
