Are there any goals for LeBron's I Promise schools? It seems like 100% proficiency in reading would be something to strive for, although I know that is unrealistic. However, 37% should be be improved on. Thoughts?
Why is 100% unrealistic? Every kid in those schools has the capacity to read if they are given the right teaching and the right motivation... difficult? yes. Impossible? no.
I have no idea what the goals are for this new school. I'm pretty sure that LeBron is hoping every single one of them gets to take advantage of the college scholarship option... and that's not going to happen if they can't read.
I think your post is coming from the right place in your heart and that it is noble. However, as a former educator, not all people learn to read at grade level, no matter the teacher or the resources given to them. Some just see black font on a white page.
Also, kids can attend college w/out being great readers. It's tough, but if they have the desire to out work others and keep trying to improve their skills, they can overcome the largest of barriers.
I don't think it's wise for us to put concrete goals on this project. The dude is giving the school over $2 million a year in order to give kids a better chance. That should be celebrated instead of being picked apart by those who don't like blacks or who are not friendly w/the president.
I also think that some of these kids will be motivated to succeed because of the positive environment they will be in. Others will fall by the wayside and some will point to those examples and say: "See, I told you so!. It was a waste of time and money!"
The intelligent and experienced among us realize that there are successes and failures w/any endeavor. We understand that odds for failure decrease when we are working with "at risk" kids.
A large percent might fail, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't continue trying to help our children succeed. President John F. Kennedy once said: “Children are the world's most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.”
I agree w/him and I think we should do everything in our power to develop that resource.
LeBron's Family Foundation is trying. The Akron School District is trying. The University of Akron is trying. Private donors are trying. Public donors are trying.
I think this is a call for celebration and not something to be nitpicked apart due to one's political and social beliefs!
Really hurts that he’s gone, but it’s a different hurt this time.
For sure, it sucks. It definitely hurts. We're on the verge of some bad basketball, in a league where you're either the have or the have not and there is absolutely no middle ground.
But I also feel like the time was right. It's an amazing story. There will be a great documentary about Lebron and the Cavs some day.

In the short time since Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James opened his innovative I Promise School in Ohio, its at-risk students have already exceeded expectations.
According to a new report from the New York Times, children at the Akron-based school have seen their math and reading scores skyrocket since its opening in July 2018. After participating in the Measures of Academic Progress assessment, which scores efficiency in reading and math, 216 of 240 students were found to have met or exceeded their expected growth at the mid-year mark.
Coming into the school, reading comprehension scores for third- and fourth-grade students were in the lowest percentile, the Times reported. Today, third graders have advanced to the ninth percentile, while fourth graders rose to the 16th. In math, third graders were in the first percentile and have since jumped to 18th. Fourth graders went to the 30th percentile after being in the second.
“These kids are doing an unbelievable job, better than we all expected,” James, 34, told the newspaper of the children’s progress. “When we first started, people knew I was opening a school for kids. Now people are going to really understand the lack of education they had before they came to our school.”
“People are going to finally understand what goes on behind our doors,” he continued.

There are those who seek to monetize anything and everything in life... including the education of our populace. As with fire departments, police, libraries, public works, etc there are simply some institutions that work better under the socialist model: all for one; one for all.
Some find this unacceptable, and believe that there's money to be made. Find a few venal politicians to slip into your pocket, and you get to run the game. Assault/discredit public teachers, bust their union(s), siphon public funds to charters, and you get to set the curriculum.
It only seems senseless on the surface. Scratch the veneer, and you'll find a whole group of Betsy DeVoss' looking to make a buck. School is good for business... invest your children.

There are many factors involved, but one remains supreme. It's really very simple. It's extremely human. Take a guess.

Clearly, Lebron and the team he put together for this endeavor do understand. Not ever having been a teacher, I'm going to say that I think you are right Vers..
I don't want to make this a political post, but I really wish that those in Washington would take a lesson from this.
My opinion is, you have to invest to get the result you want.

Clem, if I follow the money it shows me that the US has spent as much as anybody else on a per pupil basis for decades and the results have been steadily declining.
Now you can lament the rise of charter schools starting in the 90s and those hoping to profit from K-12 education but the reason the whole concept arose was because dems and reps alike were very unimpressed with the results we were getting from our K-12 education system compared to the rest of the world, most of which spends far less than we do.
Sadly, Lebron will be remembered more for on the court, than this. Which is well...a travesty.
I don't know bro, he's got a long life in front of him. He's obviously shown that he's capable of great things off the court too. But yeah, he's set the bar pretty high by being the GOAT on the court.

Not sure why we would.. there have been other, better performing, school systems around the world for decades and we haven't studied or tried to replicate those.. why would we start now?
Well we probably considered them socialist countries. You know we can't have that.
It seems America has a problem learning things from other countries. It seems like it's an ego driven thing that we think we're the best at everything and we can't possibly do better by learning from others. I mean when you're already the best, how can anyone else teach you anything?
And if you notice I certainly didn't indicate we would follow my suggestion. I just said that would be the best thing we could do.
As a society, it's rare we do the best thing.
