Too many fans fall in love with personalities. Meder was a great guy and a hard worker, but not a great player. He overachieved and became a fan favorite, but he was not a difference maker . Nassib was the same thing, along with Orchard. I have to believe that the guys they signed to replace them were looked at as better players. Those labeling them as "his" guys are foolish. I would love to see many of those same people be put into the position of building a team.I wonder how many players from a 1-31 team they would be willing to keep.
RIP, Jim

The depth of the DL looks improved with the release of Meader and Nassib. The new guys added each came from among the better defensive units in the league. Signing guys from the Vikes, Saints and yes, Ravens to replace rotational players with marginal impact makes sense to me.
That is the GM's job.

No doubt Meder was good against the run, which is what we NEED. I wish we could have him on early downs and a penetrating DT later

Yes I see discussion here are the moves that were made on Sunday as we had first dibs on guys put on waivers (cut). The Cleveland Browns on Sunday claimed DL Carl Davis (Baltimore Ravens), DL Ifeadi Odenigbo (Minnesota Vikings), OL Aaron Neary (Los Angeles Rams), DB Tavierre Thomas (Arizona Cardinals) and LB Tanner Vallejo(Buffalo Bills) from waivers. In corresponding moves, the team waived OL Austin Reiter, DL Jamie Meder, DL Carl Nassib, LB Jermaine Grace and DB Jeremiah McKinnon. My only disappointment was losing Nassib, I always thought he was a good over achiever. Now all our guys are going to lose their MONEY $$$ to miss management by their AGENTS...big time loss for Browns Players...
All bubble guys wonder if Corbett is going to work on the Center position which was suggested when we first drafted him??? don't know Aaron Neary that we picked up and if he plays Center.
Can only ASSume that we improved/upgraded on the bottom tier of our Roster. Possibly also good ST players to that we can build on that? After cuts you aren't going to pick up STARS.
Guess what guys. Our defense does not have much use for 2 gap DTs...usually bigger and slower. I think a key to this was when we traded Shelton. So not keeping Meder was not a shock. It falls under round peg/square hole.
I would like to see our Practice Squad now.
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

On the NFL Network feed for the Lions game, you can see Corbett practicing snaps with Roback in the end zone.

Tape on Devaroe Lawrence is pretty much non-existent. But I did find this clip. Potential of this kind of playmaking is why we used a draft pick on him. I'm anticipating that he produces plays like this in Williams' defense. Our new DL, DL!

You may happen to believe these guys they signed are better players, but many know that "better players aren't often found in the kicked off of another clubs cutdown to 53 man roster move day, especially not to the tune of 5. And Chris Smith was nothing but an afterthought to an afterthought when the Browns were playing against the Bengals in the past, And Chad Thomas did little in Miami in college, and has been slow to non productive since. That's 5/9ths of the D line, completel unknowns, I happen to believe the team is weaker today than it was 36 hours ago, and thus it's going to take a year and a half of addressing it in real ways to get back to what could have been. Look at the Safety position, Tashaun Gipson left and the team hasn't been close to = in nearly 3 years since. What if they lose all 16 this year, and don't even stay within a 10 point margin in any single game? Whose fault will it be then, will they replace them all with CFL players and tell me it's raining?

JC...
I felt on paper we were a stronger team prior to these changes...Mind you I dont have an affinity with Nassib, Meder, or Orchard...But what they all all provided was experienced depth and rave within our Dline...They all were in Greg Williams D last year, so def. have a leg up on the guys we just brought in...Whom have to learn a brand new system and terms with 6 days until the season opener.
Nassib was never going to put up Simeon Rice numbers, what he provided was good run D, and an active player to rave in for oft injured Ogbah and Garrett. Meder is an active overachiever whom is always trying his best and another good guy against the run. Orchard whom I never liked, and shared my opinion on draft day...I saw him probably being axed...But felt at worst he could be our bottom option; if kept...as like I stated, he like others had a full year in the system.
I have a feeling we are going to get gashed up the middle.

I wouldn't be shocked to see a lot of change with the PS this year. We are not happy with our backup front 7

It's kind of crazy that certain posters are making a deal about cutting guys like Meder and Nassib after they used to attack others who questioned not keeping all-pros like Mack and Gipson and highly rated player like Schwartz.

Teams don't carry four QBs. (A lot of teams don't even carry three.) https://www.ourlads.com/nfldepthcharts/depthcharts.aspxThe only team carrying four QBs right now is the Dolphins and my guess is that won't be the case for very much longer.

Sure Dorsey has final say but by all accounts he works collaborativey with his coaches and if Dorsey strong armed Greg to get his “own guys” I would expect lots of “F” bombs by Greg in response!

They have had zero time to learn the playbook and now the season starts with them having no clue what's going on. Our D-line a strength for us and didn't need to lose guys who knew the system to guys who don't and won't for many weeks to come. I just think it's a stupid move for this time of year. It's not like Meder and Nassib were at the bottom of the depth chart. They both had time starting for the team under this system.

As was pointed out, 4 QBs is not typically a thing that teams do. The point of a practice squad is to develop those players throughout the regular season. And as I heard it, there aren't enough reps to give Brogan when you're trying to develop Baker.

Agreed. Dorsey is the guy who makes the final decisions, but I think he listens to the coaches. We have even viewed a couple of short segments on HK where Hue is presenting Dorsey w/some info from the coaching staff.

I'm sure that they told him to stay ready just in case of an injury. If someone got hurt we could add him to the practice squad, if nothing else.

While technically accurate that Dorsey holds all the power and Gregg only has input as Dorsey allows it, I agree with y'all that there is just no way that Dorsey does that sort of thing unilaterally without input from the DC.

Dorsey has been quoted in saying "the plan" has been a collaboration of his staff and the coaching staff so that pretty much negates your argument that coaches, especially Coordinators, have no input. Besides, simple logic would dictate that you use your people closest to the players to inform your decisions. The point I really want to make is on players coming in late and having to adjust. These players have already been evaluated to possess the skills the Browns want to add to the team. They have been coached on technique, both in college and with their former clubs. Now that they are here they have to learn terminology and alignment and scheme. I suspect the first priority will be to master their roles in the specific sub packages they will play in. Not the entire defense all at once. It will take some time but if they already have better traits than the guys they are replacing we should be able to see it within the first month. So, for example. Odenigbo already has more pass rush potential than Carl. He displays more explosiveness and more bend from the outside. Some here have criticized that Minnesota moved him to DT but if he learned more hand placement, punch and defeating double teams inside then how much better could he be on the edge?

Not sure where this could go without starting a new thread... Browns waive C.J. Board and Justin Currie from injured reserve https://www.dawgsbynature.com/2018/9/11/...injured-reserveThe Cleveland Browns parted ways with receiver C.J. Board and linebacker Justin Currie, waiving them from their injured reserve on Tuesday. Currie and Board were waived with injury designations on Aug. 31, then went unclaimed and reverted to the team’s injured reserve on Sept. 2. Both Board and Currie both looked promising in preseason and throughout training camp until getting injured in the Browns’ preseason finale against Detroit. Board left with an unspecified shoulder injury in the second quarter, while Currie suffered a knee injury in the fourth quarter after leading the team in snaps and tackles in the game. Board appeared to be battling with Derrick Willies for the final receiver roster spot, and the door appeared to swing open for Currie after Mychal Kendricks was indicted for insider stock trading and subsequently released. The releases signal the Browns probably did not like their prognoses, or see the players in their longterm plans.

Report: Browns tried out ex-draft choice Vince Mayle, six others ByJOSH EDWARDS 15 hours ago
General Manager John Dorsey is still perusing the unemployment line in hopes of finding a player that can help the Cleveland Browns this season.
The team tried out tight end Vince Mayle, linebacker Darnell Sankey, tight end Nick Keizer, tight end Kevin Rader, defensive tackle Anthony Moten, linebacker Ufomba Kamalu and running back Mark Thompson.
Mayle played college basketball with Shasta College before transitioning to the football field with Sierra College and eventually Washington State. The Sacramento native was a fourth draft pick of the Browns in the 2015 NFL Draft. He did not play a down of regular season football in Cleveland. The team parted ways with him as part of the final roster cuts and he landed with the Dallas Cowboys. He spent two seasons with the Cowboys and the most recent two years with the Baltimore Ravens. His career production is one carry for two yards and a touchdown.
Sankey is a former undrafted rookie out of Sacramento State and was a former FCS All-American. He has primarily been training camp fodder for teams since he entered the league in 2016. He has been with the Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings, Baltimore Ravens, Indianapolis Colts and Detroit Lions. His only regular season play came in 2017 with the Colts. He appeared in six games but did not record any statistics.
Keizer is an undrafted free agent out of Grand Valley State. Here is some background courtesy of NFL.com.
The regular season has arrived. Sign up for insider access only at Cleveland Browns on 247Sports today and take advantage of our FREE trial!
"The first-team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Association selection started eight of 11 contests played, caught 29 passes for 504 yards and nine touchdowns, and led all Division II tight ends with 17.4 yards per catch. Keizer was a regular contributor as a reserve in 2015 (13 games played, nine catches, 127 yards, two touchdowns) and 2016 (12 games, seven catches, 103 yards). As a redshirt freshman in 2014, the former all-state pick from Michigan played as a reserve tight end and on special teams, but did not catch a pass."
Rader is an undrafted free agent out of Youngstown State. The Pennsylvania native spent some time with the Green Bay Packers but he has not appeared in a regular season game.
Moten was initially signed as an undrafted free agent out of Miami by the Miami Dolphins. He was primarily a reserve player for the Hurricanes and has yet to appear in an NFL regular season game.
Kamalu entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent from Miami in 2016. He spent the last two seasons with the Houston Texans. He has recorded 11 tackles and three sacks in his career.
Thompson was an undrafted rookie out of Florida. He was most recently with the Baltimore Ravens.
Doesn't seem like any of these guys would be better options than those we cut. And if we are looking at a DT, I wonder what is wrong with Hankinson. Is it me or did he go from top tier DT to out of a job very quickly?
