Alibaba bails on pledge to create one million U.S. jobs

Alibaba executive chairman Jack Ma says his company no longer plans to help the US economy add one million jobs, which is something he had promised President Trump during a meeting in early 2017.

Ma never claimed Alibaba would hire a million Americans. Instead, he wanted to help increase trade with Asia, thus enabling US small businesses to hire more people.
The bottom line: Ma tells Xinhua News Agency that the Chinese Internet giant's commitment was based on friendly U.S.-Chinese relations, but that subsequent trade tensions "destroyed the original premise."

Yes, sounds to me like the Chinese Government has Ma in its sites.

He retires and now is pushing the Chinese side on trade.

Nevertheless, China has stolen away far more than 1 million promised American jobs by stealing our intellectual property all these years.

We helped to bring China into the world by cutting them slack on tariffs and now that they have made it, it is high time we dealt on equal terms in trade with them.

We are willing to negotiate while they refuse to even talk.
Can't blame them though, they built a world class military on our dime.

It won't be long until they figure out that if they cut back on their own exports of things like appliances, TV's ,electronics and clothes, that the American consumer will pay a huge price for those goods and it will them that are laughing.

You are funny.

Now here is what people in the know are saying...

America is winning the trade war and here's the proof, market watcher says

The U.S. and China fired their latest billion-dollar shots in the escalating trade war this week.

One market watcher is ready to declare a winner.

"You vote with your dollars and you look at the U.S. markets since the start of the trade war and it's done quite well. China really hasn't," Steve Chiavarone, portfolio manager at Federated, told CNBC's "Trading Nation" on Wednesday.

The S&P 500 and Dow broke records on Thursday, while the Shanghai composite was stuck in a bear market. The Chinese stock market index has fallen 24 percent since its highs set in late January.

The monetary impact of tariffs also tips the trade war in favor of the U.S., said Chiavarone.

"When we add up all the impact of tariffs, they come up to just a fraction of the stimulus being added into the economy in the U.S. and I think the market is really starting to ferret that out," he said.

People in the know said this would be easy. This would be over quickly. Now China won't even come to the table. It appears those in the know don't know nearly as much as some think they know.

And you're the same guy who claimed all of the other things about tariffs that have proven to be wrong so far.

Hilarious actually.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average hit its first record high since January on Thursday as gains in Apple and a decrease in trade fears lifted the 30-stock index.

The Dow jumped 258 points as Boeing, Caterpillar and Apple rose. The S&P 500 also rose 0.8 percent to an all-time high, its first since late August, as materials and tech outperformed.

President Donald Trump touted the S&P 500's record in a tweet, saying "Congrats USA!"

So far is the key.

Whatever happened to buy American and protect American jobs? We now have a President who is seeking to do that.

Face it my friend, Dems speak out of both sides of their mouth. They say one thing, but don't act other than to keep people on the plantation. It's easy to promise free food and phones. It takes effort to build good jobs for people.

I see it this way,,,,the Dems are all about wishbone and less about backbone.
The Republicans represnt the blue collar worker better than the Dems.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

Well good luck getting people to start making clothes in America again. Or electronics for that matter. People aren't going to start paying double for TV's and blue jeans.

I'm all for buying American. But I can't buy American made goods that aren't made in America anymore.

And BTW- a lot of those blue collar workers are living below poverty. I haven't seen the GOP take any real actions to raise wages. They don't seem to care about those people having healthcare either.

We should start a list of victories Trump claims that later turn out to be delusional.

1)NK Nuclear Agreement
2)Trade Wars are easy to win
3)No Collusion
4)No Obstruction
5)Witch Hunt
6)Mexico will pay for a wall and be happy to do it
7)Melania believes he didn't cheat with those women...

The list is endless... lmao

Not for nothing but:

https://www.theverge.com/2018/9/19/17879844/alibaba-us-jobs-tariffs

"Alibaba will no longer bring 1 million jobs to the US, citing tariffs"

Quote:

Alibaba’s founder and chairman Jack Ma says the Chinese mega e-commerce company no longer has plans to create 1 million jobs in the US, citing the ongoing trade conflict as the reason Alibaba is retracting its promise to Donald Trump. A new round of tariffs between the US and China will make mutual trade more difficult.

Ma told Chinese state-run news outlet Xinhua today that his promise was based on the assumption that the US and China would have “rational trade relations,” which is no longer the case. “This promise was based on friendly US-China partnership and rational trade relations,” Ma said. “The current situation has already ruined that. There is no way to complete the promise now, but we won’t stop working hard to promote the healthy development of China-US trade.” Last week, Ma announced his plans to retire this year and hand over the company to its current CEO. He denied rumors that he was being forced out.

The initial promise was made in January last year, right before Trump’s inauguration. At the time, reports of Ma’s bold claim were already skeptical, given the lack of specifics.
"“Trade isn’t a weapon, it can’t be used for war.”"

After failing to reach a deal with China on trade conditions, the US finalized a new round of tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese imported goods on Monday. The new tariffs impose a 10 percent tax when goods first arrive in the US that rises to 25 percent by the end of the year. The tariffs affect nearly every US company doing business with China.

On Tuesday, Ma called the trade situation a mess that could have consequences that last for decades. Today, Ma said trade should be used for peace, not for war. “I want to say that trade between the two countries — trade in the world — really needs to be improved upon, but trade isn’t a weapon, it can’t be used for war, it should be used to bring about peace.”

Like most things that Trump says, he's full of it.

Peen, You will NEVER see the textile industry return to the US. You will never seen the Coal industry return to what it once was.

In terms of Electronics such as TV's etc, You may see some of that come back,, who knows, but if you do, at TV that today costs 1000.00 will jump up heavy in consumer costs.

All those jobs that Trump promised before he was elected? Where are they.

Yes, some new jobs in the Steel industry have been promised and some have actually happened. What happened to that company that was supposed to bring 500,000 jobs to the US... Fox something or the other. They I think were supposed to open up in Wisconsin. Before that, they were going to open up in PA but that didn't happen either.

In the meantime, this damn fool thinks that tariffs are the way to go.

Has he figured out yet that if he puts tariffs on an item that normally sells for 150.00 US will rise in costs to the consumer if tariffs are implemented? Maybe that $150.00 item will jump to $200.00, who knows. but the people that will pay that price are you and I.

Tax cuts: LOL,,, Reagan tried it, Recession in 1990. W tried it, Recession in 2008.

Look at the deficit rising.. Just look at that.

Trump isn't a total failure when it comes to economics, but he's close to it if you look long term.

He's all about instant success for Trump.. He likes instant gratification. But anyone with a brain can tell you that when you go for instant gratification, you essentially toss the long term future out the window. Reagan found it out, so did Bush one (read my lips, no new taxes) and so did W.

China is trying to run an economy based on heavy Government control of Capitalism. It will fail.

Free Trade, Supply and Demand works best. Little tweaks by the government can help but government dominance will fail.

Mercantilism was a popular economic philosophy in the 17th and 18th centuries. In this system, the British colonies were moneymakers for the mother country. The British put restrictions on how their colonies spent their money so that they could control their economies.

We all know how that ended.

Lets see now, how long has China been running their economy in this manner? 10 years, 25 years, 50 years, 100 years, 500 years?

Yup, failure is right around the corner I'm sure.

About 20 years and with us, the worlds largest economy looking the other way while they ripped us off on tariffs and stole our technology.

Now they are number two and have invested a lot into their military. They threaten us in parts of the world now.

Time to deal on a more level trading field wouldn't you say?

Can you actually show us these unfair trade practices you're speaking of?

And supply and demand? They're making the supplies and the demand is there. We are the demand.

It's funny. We can't buy American made clothes. There are none. Not even the one who claims we should buy American makes his clothes in America, Trump.

Where are we going to get our appliances, clothes and electronics from? Jesus isn't in the manufacturing business.

So I've heard about all of these "unfair trade deals" but I certainly haven't seen any facts or numbers to back that up. What is it exactly that China relies on importing from us again?

I bought American. Carhardt, Levi, Converse, Red Wing, GM cars and Ford trucks. Carhardt is no longer here. Levis is gone. Red Wing is gone. Converse is gone.

People need to pick a story and stick to it. IF these trade wars are "easy to win and won't last long", no American business would be foolish enough to build up new plants, factories and the machinery needed to manufacture those goods in America. The payoff simply wouldn't be there short term. So those jobs aren't coming back.

And don't spew the nonsense about trade deficits. When you import two or three times as much from another country, basic math tells you that you're spending more importing goods from them than they are from you.

It's just that some people don't have the common sense to figure that out.

You don't have the ability to understand it.

Your boy Obama so tied the hands of American business and workers that everything went overseas because we became noncompetitive.

America is coming back now, the signs are everywhere but you lack the ability to understand it.

So your answer is a non answer with no substance to back it up.
Gotcha. Faux news hasn’t told you the ‘details’ yet so you can only make vague statements like...”blah blah blah Obama bad. Blah blah blah ‘Murika winning.”
