What Quinn did last night albeit against a prevent D and 3rd & 4th stringers is STILL more impressive than ANYTHING that Charlie Frye has ever done on the field. EVER.
Now you are reaching.
Frye vs Jacksonville - regular season game vs starters 13 of 20 for 226 yards, 2 TD's, 0 INT 0 completions to RB's 13 completions to WR's and TE's Long pass, 45 yards to Northcutt
Quinn vs Detroit - preseason game vs grocery baggers playing prevent defense 13 of 20 for 155 yards, 2 TD's, 0 INT 8 completions to RB's 5 compleions to WR's and TE's Long pass, 30 yards to Barclay
Quinn had a solid game. But it was far from spectacular. Let's keep in reality.

Ease up man....save the stick. My point isn't to pimp Dorsey so much as to say Frye and Anderson aren't any or much better. So if they start, you only have to slam your thumb with a ballpeen hammer. I have one if you need it.

Maybe you should if you think Frye will do anything but lead this team to losses, As I have said every since we drafted him he will always be a backup quality QB in the NFL!
Just wait till next season, I have heard that for over 40 years!

Reality is that Charlie Frye is back-up no matter what stats you pull-up or how you paint it, Most of us simply need to look at the won loss record and the fact that when not "given" the job outright like he was last season, after close to a full NFL season under his belt he cant even clearly outplay a guy like Anderson and be named the starter by the 2nd pre-season game.
The proof is right there.

I agree that you can't compare playing against NFL starters in regular season, verses playing against third stringers in a pre-season game.
But for only being in camp for less than three weeks and being a rookie,it WAS SPECTACULAR all things considered.
And who's reaching? You'r comparing what Frye did in four quaters of play,to Bradys ten plus minutes of play?

I don't disagree, 'Peener, but my point was that Dorsey's value to us is as a mentor... something he doesn't have to be one the roster to do.
I don't imagine that if Dorsey was released that he'd get a whole bunch of calls to play, but I think he could be a valuable addition to our coaching staff.

I wouldn't be too sure of that.
I think he is good enough as a player to manage a game if called upon...and offers the coaching aspect you mention.
Plus...coaches don't room with players...I would have Dorsey and Quinn paired up all season long.

Quinn's Lineman were LT - Dorsey - our backup LT - 2 starts last year LG - Hoffman - our backup LG - C - Smith - our 3rd string C - 1 start last year RG - Sowells - our backup RG RT - Butler - our backup RT - 5 starts last year
Man he was using chumps vs future grocery baggers.
Our 2nd string O-line vs Detoit's grocery baggers playing prevent D.
And some of you are pretending it was the greatest performance you've ever seen. Especially when a guy only throws that ball farther than 10 yards down field 2 times.

Mensa no beef here. I am not one that thinks more of BQ's game last night than what it was but if you seriously want to see more Frye vs Anderson instead of seeing more BQ i guess I just wouldnt understand why.
Quinn isnt that far away from being given a chance to go against some the same guys that CF & DA have been going against (The 2's). Whether RAC keeps up the CF vs DA "competition" or not this week will have an impact on what level of competition Quinn sees next time around. At this point in TC I am not sure the Browns wouldnt be more interested in seeing BQ with the 2's than they would Anderson (obviously my speculation )

No one's arguing that. Not even the biggest Quinn pimps are arguing that (although, who's was playing on D? it's misleading to not say who they were playing against).
My argument is that he looked extremely, EXTREMELY poised for a guy who supposedly is "behind." While yes, he did have mostly checkdown easy throws that many HS QB's can read and make in that situation (although they certainly wouldn't have the completion % he did), when he had to face the blitz or throw downfield, he did it.
He was also very accurate with his throws, showed the best footwork out of any of our QB's and also threw the best ball out of all of them.
Look, it is what it is, and you're not gonna get me to say that because he lit it up he should immediately be promoted to first string (that's ludicrious). I do think he's earned time with the twos and maybe the ones in a situation where he'll be facing more than soft zone coverage, though.
He looked like a man among boys out there, and the team around him seemed to play better because of it.

Hey,Mensa can you name 3 things that Charlie Frye does better than Brady Quinn? I saw 3 things that Quinn does better than Frye.....
1.Buy time in the pocket
2. More decisive with the football
3. Shows command.

Cool thing this time Duty, is that no stats are necessary. Mensa simply stated the truth. 3rd string preseason D playing soft prevent cover.
Brady picked them apart underneath on crossing patterns and dumps to the middle of the field... exactly what they allowed us to do. Closed off the sidelines, and made us burn time down the field.
Now he did alright, and it was nice to see, mind you... and gives me a bit of hope for the future, but let's face it- it wasn't Joe Montana's Super Bowl drive against the Cowboys by any means.
What we got was pretty much what I hoped we'd get... a raw, talented kid who got to have a nice, clean 'coming out party." His uni stayed clean, he showed some poise, made some checkdowns, had no glaring errors, and gave himself a chance to grow on some positive baby steps. Very nice- but not amazing.
Browns fans have been so starved, that there is the tendency to exaggerate what was really there. Understandable, considering the length of drought around here. Tellya what- If Quinn gets a chance to play against some team's #1's and still engineers a couple of drives like that, I'll be getting out my gold chains, platform shoes, widebrim hat (complete with peacock feather) and purple polyester suit, and hit the streets in my pimpmobile with Brady's name on the license plates.
Until then, I'll be content to watch him come along without hyperventilating at each good- and bad-looking play. Kid's gonna be here for a good while, 'cuz we have too many bux into him for anything else. He doesn't have to save the world in 2 preseason drives.

Good post clem
2 years ago, Frye was the fan darling, local boy makes good. Dilfers weakness became apparent early into the season, and with the Browns going nowhere and Dilfer banged up staring Frye is reasonable.
Truth be told, If the Browns were not so terrible, or would have gone out and gotten a legitmate QB via FA, Frye would not have sniffed the field.
So the Browns play him, he plays like a rookie or 2nd year QB, and so now he is waiver wire material.
I don't agree with this. Since Quinn will likely be the starter at sometime in the future, the Browns still need a backup. Frye may be that person.
Savage put his career on the line by moving back into the first to pick up Quinn, who he considered for the #3 pick. Hopefully this will end the dreaded Browns QB revolving door scenario for many years to come.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!

Thats just it..Charlie Frye being from Ohio and going to Akron disguised the fact that he is at best a backup QB in the NFL.Its distorts the reality. If Charlie was from Alabama and went to college at Alabama Birmingham, the love affair with him would have over with way back.

Frye is our best option as of right now. He is definitely a viable option as a starter in the NFL. He's got poise, he can make the throws, he demonstrates outstanding touch on some throws, and has the best feel for our offense; pair this with his mobility, and we have our starter.

Did it really? To the FO,or to the fans? Look at two scenarios. We got Shaffer for 36mil. Savage said publicly that "he may not be the long term answer at LT". Now that may not be a direct quote, but that was the "thrux" of his comment. So what happenned the VERY next year? We draft a LT in round 1.
Shaffer played LT in Atlanta for a left handed QB. Do you think Phil saw Shaffer as a "sure fire" solution at LT? Or did he have more pressing needs with his draft picks? Could it be that Shaffer was not actually brought in with the "high expectations" from Savage at the LT spot as the "fans" percieved that move?
And do you REALLY think that Phil saw a third round kid from a small school as a pretty sure fire bet at QB? Or was he drafted to "fill in" untill we drafted a "franchise QB" with a much higher investment?
Quote:
If Charlie was from Alabama and went to college at Alabama Birmingham, the love affair with him would have over with way back.
What's your point? The fans don't run this team,Phil does. Maybe, just maybe,he thought the kid had a "shot" to be a franchise QB,but not a GREAT shot at being one. How many NFL GM's do you know that draft a QB in round 3 and feel his talent and skill set is such that the law of average dictate he will be a franchise QB?
Here's how I see it. Phil KNEW he had to build a team from the ground up. If he thought the QB was "the first piece" of the puzzle,he would have drafted one much higher. But I don't think he DID feel that way. I think he took a flyer on a kid in round three that "could" possibly pan out,but the odds weren't great. In the mean time, let him play while we "build a team and OL" FOR our franchise QB. (insert Quinn here)
That way,you end up with Charlie as your back-up,while paying him third round money and gaining valuable NFL experience while he was working to build the team and environment to bring in a franchise QB when this team was ready for it.
Just like Shaffer. Tucker was getting older. He won't last forever. So you sign Shaffer as a "stop gap measure" at LT. Maybe he pans out,but probably not. But,untill you get the "oppertunity" to get a "legit franchise LT" you have Shaffer. When you DO get that franchise LT,at Tuckers age,you move Tucker inside to the RG spot,or cut him,and move Shaffer to RT. Just like setting up your long term back-up QB,ya gotta plan ahead Dude!
They were both brought here as "pieces to the puzzle". But I don't think Phil brought them in here as the "franchise answers" that many of the fans percieved him to have done.
And yes Impact,we root hard for Ohio kids and wish them success. But if you think most of us are foolish enough to "see things that aren't there" I think you're mistaken.
Charlie will make a fine back-up to Quinn. In the mean time,he'll work to keep the seat warm. Nothing more. And at third round money? That'll work out okay.
And Shaffer? He seems to be working into the RT spot better than he EVER did the LT spot here, and that's just after a few weeks. With Thomas drafted for our LT and Steinbach getting 40+ mil at G. 36 mil for a pretty good RT ain't sounding so bad about now.
Some people got fooled. And some people overestimated lower round talent. But not all that many. It's surely not the "epidemic" you're making it out to be.

Your comments on Frye's and Shaffer's future role is something I have been pondering since April. Frye's starts now will make him all the better #2 QB. If it turns out that he is starting material, then a trade could get us a decent player in exchange down the road. But we will still need a # 2 if that happens. That is one other reason that keeping Dorsey just to be a "mentor" is folly.

No one here hates CF or DA. It does appear that a few on this board hate BQ. Notre Dame connection or holdout-or costly contract withstanding BQ has more upside and presence than all three other QBs on the roster.
Real Brown's fans know that our house is not yet in order. Our Dline is feeble and our running back situation is shaky but promising. We want a reason to ache for Sunday Brown's football games and neither CF/DA/KD do that. Never will, never!
All we want is to see BQ moving up the depth chart while the others need to hold the clipboard and let the future practice more.

I don't hate any of our players, but I can't say the same for the rest of our fans. They cheer when players get injured. They boo when Dorsey takes the field. I'd say our fans hate a lot of the players on our team, especially CF and DA.

Please, there was a thread in the smack shack on BQ started by our fans. I've said it for a while, Joe Thomas' PR people are brilliant because they've got him built as the "common man", which therefore implied that the other people weren't. Add on that Quinn was on magazine covers and people were jumping all over him for doing covers, or for going to an autograph event, or whatever. I've never seen so much hatred on these boards for a first round pick of the Browns. After Saturday night, those people have been largely quiet (mysteriously), but they will come back at his first bad game...

That wasn't directed towards Dorsey, but more towards RAC for not letting BQ play. And the only player I can think of that the home fans ever booed was Tim Couch, so get your FACTS straight before you attack others.

He is definitely a viable option as a starter in the NFL Option to keep Quinn on the bench for now....temporary starter..not fulltime . he can make the throws, he demonstrates outstanding touch on some throws No he cannot make all the throws..he has problems with the deeper passes and the long out patterns,.. And he has a tendency to throw behind guys on timing patterns..
He's got poise, When he's not pressed to produce points..when he gets into the redzone he cracks...he implodes.. You see this is how I'm measuring Frye this year..points..TD's...he can drive this team up and down the field at will..I want to see him produce TD's inside the redzone..if he can't do that...he'll lose his job..

I argued this all last year. Problem was, we didn't have an experienced QB to come in and replace Frye. When Anderson came in and things were similar, not better/not worst, fans came to understand that the boy from Willard had a few problems.
That being said, Frye or Anderson are both better options, at the moment, to Quinn. If Quinn could have come to camp on time and learned the offense with everybody else, maybe there would be an option other than Dorsey... and I'm beginning to lean towards starting Dorsey....

This is a myth that is constantly repeated. That does not make it true. I could not care less where Charlie went to school. If he can win games is all I care about. At this point in time I think he can. And the sooner people realize that barring some miraculous talent transplant in our other veterans that Charlie will be the starter when the season starts the better off we'll all be.
Will Brady eventually be "The Man"? Sure. It may not happen as soon as some on here want it to, but it will happen. My guess would be it will be in inverse proportion to our W-L record. That is losing record after the first 6 games = Brady starts. Winning record = Brady sits and "learns". But he'll be our starter by game 1 next year. And I'm sure CF knows this.
Will Brady be as good as guys like Diam say he'll be? I doubt it. How could he be? Diam's already proclaimed him the best QB drafted in the last decade. Tall order for a young guy, I'd say. Will he be better than what we've got? I sure hope so. Not because I think Charlie sucks but because if he is better that means the Browns will be better. And winning.
I think that's what we all want. No matter who takes the snap. At least that's what we should want.

Listen, I don't think there is anybody on this board that doesn't know BQ will eventually be our starter. If you listen to Cleveland Sportstalk every idiot with a phone is calling in saying start Brady now. Everybody is talking about Frye and Anderson like they are garbage. I'll admit Anderson has looked bad but its only been 2 PREseason games. That fumble on the 1st play, what about Shaffer? The D player went around him like he was stuck in cement. I hear fans blaming Derek for that. If Frye puts up 3TD next game , you Impac, Ammo Balpeen will still hate him. What the hell is wrong with Cleveland fans? We want the coach of the Cavs fired along with Wedge and Rac. All starting QBs need benched going back to and including Couch. Borowski has to go, Peralta, Nixon and maybe even Sizemore if he doesn't quit stricking out. I have even heard some fans rip on Lebron. I'll tell you Attack, if I was Frye I would beg for the chance to go to Atlanta or Minn. Anything to get away from this town.

Fans are the same everywhere, Duty. Right now, I'd feel the same way if I was Frye or Dorsey... but "love reigns supreme" when teams actually win games. Frye & Dorsey would be booed anywhere else, if they found themselves in a similar situation. They want Brady, because he's all shiny and new.
Lots of what we're seeing is pent-up frustration and impatience. Whether the fans were booing Dorsey, RAC, Chudzy or Sherer is almost immaterial... they will continue unabated until we're in the Suoer Bowl- and get aimed at any old "target du jour." Quinn will be no exception once they get used to seeing him on the field.
In the waning minutes of the game, Bernie warned us about this... when the cameras panned to all the "high-fivers" in the stands. He tried to tell us that a few dumpoffs and checkdowns during garbage time wouldn't be enough to change the coaching decisions, but WOULD be enough to start a full-fledged QB controversy. Just what we need at this point in our evolution.
Fans are gonna be fans... which, as we all know, is short for fanatic. I've known a few fanatics in my day.... and reason and logic don't usually come in the package.

I guess your right. But it ticks me off to read what some of these guys write. After all we are supposed to be a blue collar town that loves tough guys and over achivers. What is more blue collar than Charlie Frye. Some poster boy comes in and moves the ball against a bunch of Insurance salesmen and we start calling the radio stations and nitpicking our QBs. That might sound like I don't like Brady and I do. I'd just hate to ruin him like we are known to do.

If you listen to Cleveland Sportstalk every idiot with a phone is calling in saying start Brady now. So? If Rac is smart he's not going to let that control him. I don't want it..and I'm sure Rac doesn't . Everybody is talking about Frye and Anderson like they are garbage. No..some do call them garbage , but some of us call it as it is.. They look like legid backups...nothing more. That fumble on the 1st play, what about Shaffer? We have called KS a bum However DA never looked or even sensed pressure coming.. He did what he does..make some throws , then throw a pick... If Frye puts up 3TD next game , you Impac, Ammo Balpeen will still hate him I hate you classified me in with that worm hole of a group I don't hate Frye..I say he's not the future...and if you check my posts, I spell out his strengths and his liabilities..never ever said I hate him. I see him for what he is. I don't CARE what Peen , Ammo Impact or anyone thinks of him ..I know what I see and what I think of him. We want the coach of the Cavs fired along with Wedge and Rac. NO...Mike Brown needs someone to call offensive plays and Danny Ferry to get him a PG. Wedge SHOULD HAVE NEVER been given a extension BEFORE the season was over..he lacks in the fundamentals .his team doesn't have those qualities.. I never once said Rac needed to go..U guys need to be more careful what U read and who U read. I'll tell you Attack, if I was Frye I would beg for the chance to go to Atlanta or Minn. Anything to get away from this town. No that should be Anderson begging, cuze I can tell ya right now, he's the one who's going to be sent packing.

. But we will still need a # 2 if that happens. That is one other reason that keeping Dorsey just to be a "mentor" is folly.
Well you see,to buy into that line of thinking, you would actually have to believe one of two things.
1. That Anderson could and would actually BE a valid option as your #2 QB. Which I BTW don't believe.
2. You will be able to replace a qualified back-up QB with NFL starting experience (Frye) or get something even more valuable in return from such a trade. Which BTW- I don't buy that either.
We have a "future back-up" with plenty of NFL starts under his belly and paying him third round money. You think we're going to do better trading him off and keeping DA as our current starter and future back-up? Have you actually been watching him play?
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I'll chime in now to add my voice to this. Brady did pretty good. I was not a huge fan of his before the game and I'm still not. I thought he played well, against some bad players playing a STUPID scheme. (man I hate prevent). Still he made me think that the trade up may have been a better idea than I had thought it was. I am willing to admit that he may be a good QB.
Charlie looked ok to me against the ones. Did he do a STUPID play? Yes, but I bet HE remembers this is preseason. I have a feeling he doesn't feel DA breathing down his neck like some think he is. Maybe Charlie was just trying the throw to see if he could make it? I mean this is basically..... practice....remember practice?.........where it ain't really a GAME it's Practice? You asking and talking about a gloriefied practise!!! (ok end Iverson rant).
Still we all need to calm down. I mentioned I am not a huge Brady fan. You know why? He hasn't earned it. I like him more than I did before. I still worry he would do just what Charlie did though. At this point I have no idea why some preople can not accept that it IS possible that he won't be the greatest QB ever.
I also still say how in the world can people give up on Charlie already??? Brees...anyone remember him??? Not not the last season in San Diego or last year in New Orleans....I mean his first three years.
Bah,,,, you people either help us remain a TEAM or keep making noise about some illisionary QB controvercy. My spelling sucks but I dont' sell that garbage in my store. Unless Brady just TEARs up up and has total command of the playbook....he sits. Charlie is our starter and I think it is time we start treating him like one. I will be ready to sit Charlie once he basically proves to be not as good as Brady. Not before.

Just clicking...
Looks like BQ has moved past Dorsey on the depth chart. I'll be looking to see him go in after DA throws his next INT, which will probably come sometime early in the 3rd quarter. Next week against Chicago he might even get some time with the ones.

Frankly, I believe both DA and Dorsey are prolly only #3 QBs. It's a matter of which one is better/worse.Like I said before I'm for cutting both and picking up a QB off waivers in a few weeks if possible. No, I haven't been watching the games. I moved to the Balto-DC area 10 years ago next month, so I can only see the Browns about 3 games a year and that pisses me off no end. So ,I have to come to the boards to get more info. and let me tell you, the info is confusing AT BEST. now I think I'll go back to bed.

I agree we need to calm down regarding the QB situation but one thing stuck out at me from your post. Quote:

This begs that I ask the question.....what did Charlie Frye do to "earn" the starting job.
Wasnt he just handed the job last year??
And as far as the comparison to Drew Brees that appears to be a common argument, Charlie Frye never played as good as Brees did when he was in college and for us to even hin that he may turn into Brees the pro is ludicrous.
Charlie is the starter until he hands it to Quinn like Dilfer did to him by playing like crap.
If Quinn isnt even close to playing now you have to wonder what criteria they used to determine that Frye was ready to be a starter.
