Rishard Matthews - WR - Titans
Rishard Matthews has reportedly left the Titans and does not intend to rejoin the team.
Matthews' playing time has been scaled back significantly under Mike Vrabel's new coaching staff after he missed the entire offseason with injuries. He indicated Wednesday that he is upset with his usage. "I’ve been the leading receiver for two years," Matthews said on Instagram. "Then all of a sudden I’m barely playing and not even starting. Using my injury as the scapegoat. Look at number of snaps and targets." Matthews is an above-average No. 2 receiver, but the new coaches have no attachment to him. Expect more-explosive Taywan Taylor to benefit with increased playing time.

The Cleveland Browns have signed DL Brian Price to the practice squad. To make room, the team released DL Zaycoven Henderson from the practice squad. Officially in his second NFL season, Price (6-3, 322) entered the league as an undrafted free agent signed by the Green Bay Packers in 2016. He’s appeared in 10 career games with one start and nine tackles. This season, Price started Week 2 for the Oakland Raiders and registered one tackle after he was claimed by the team via waivers from the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 3. A native of Lafayette, Ind., Price attended Texas-San Antonio. Henderson was signed by the Browns as an undrafted free agent during training camp and was added to the team’s practice squad after final roster cuts. https://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news/browns-sign-dl-brian-price-to-practice-squad The #Browns increased DT Brian Price’s practice squad salary from the minimum $7,600 a week to $37,058 a week after the #Cowboys and #Packers tried to poach him, per sources. Price played for both teams previously as well as the #Raiders. https://twitter.com/TomPelissero/status/1045297447998816257

Well that was fast ... wonder what happenend here ...
Rishard Matthews - WR - Free Agent
Titans released WR Rishard Matthews.
This was really the only possible outcome after Matthews walked away from the team this week. Tennessee's No. 1 receiver each of the last two seasons, Matthews is talented and has consistently produced when given the opportunity. This incident could scare off a few teams, but it would be a surprise if he does not land somewhere in the near future. With Matthews out the door, Corey Davis is locked into the No. 1 role, and talented sophomore Taywan Taylor should see more opportunities.

Matthews was upset that he wasn't getting enough targets. The Patriots tried to get him at one point before. The Cowboys should be interested in any wide receiver with a pulse.

He’d help us .... he’s better than Higgins by a lot ... he’s better than Callaway at this point but Callaway is a better for along side VICE GRIPS ...
I’m sure Billichecks been in touch ... although i’m Guessing a lot of the problems were with the “patrio” way ....
Talent wise they sure could use him .... so could we ... and a lot of teams ...

I know the name but I don't know much about his career. I suspect we haven't seen the best of Higgins yet. Not opposed to looking at the guy but he replaces Willies or Streater on the depth chart not Higgins.

I think that the team really likes both Willies and Ratley.
If they didn't, there would have been a whole lot of opportunities to replace either, or both.
I remember reading something during camp that said that Haley really liked the young receivers we had, and wanted the team to develop them. Well, on our team are 1 veteran in Landry, 1 young veteran in Higgins, and 3 rookies in Callaway, Ratley, and Willies.
The Steelers always did a nice job with their young receivers, so maybe we start doing that now.

I like our group of receivers.
The biggest part is being given a chance. Lets see what we have before we start cutting guys.

Jc...
I try to watch the Titans as much as I can...I'd definately vouch the signing of Matthew's...He plays big, and makes tough snags all the time, and has a lot of experience having played against starting caliber of corners for many years now...He's not a burner but his game speed is better than his timed speed...that's probably his biggest flaw.
Hes still only 28...I'm not entirely sold on Calloway and Higgins...I think they are better served as #3 and #4 options...Matthew's even signed till the end of our year, improves our core a lot. Temporarily patching the WR core until the young guys learn more and improve.

He also quit on his former team.
I'd pass. Develop our young guys alongside Baker Mayfield. I think that Mayfield is able to make his receivers better, as evidenced by the way the receivers improved so dramatically in the time Mayfield was in the game.

You summed it more simply than I did. I agree with you. No knock on Mathews but I see no on-field reason to disrupt our receiving corp.

The Steelers always did a nice job with their young receivers, so maybe we start doing that now. It seemed like every year under Haley's direction the Steeler O would find WRs in the mid-to-late rounds that were contributors or quite-good players. Hoping that he brings that quality to us.

I wasn't too impressed with Willies but the kid is big. The grass is always greener on the other side. But I like that we are sticking with our own. If we do go FA, I know I'm in the minority but I like Dez over the rest. Most posters think Dez as a negative in the locker room but I actually think he could be a good mentor for both youngsters, Ratley and Willies.
Higgins is a lot better than he gets credit for. Him being the LAST of the 4 draft picks from the 2016 draft. Lest we forget the kid came to us a young 20. And has progressed each season. He has a very good bond with Baker and has attached himself to Baker. He also has begun to believe in himself. I see a lot of Landry in him. That would make 2 WRs that are/will be very reliable and run good routes with excellent hands.
Even without Gordon, I think the WR group is the best we have had since 1999.

I'm not in a position to argue that Mathews is a better player or not as I've already stated. I've never followed his career. My concern is that Higgins and Mayfield spent the entire offseason together. They rose up the depth chart together and Mayfield helped Higgins raise his level of production, noticeably. They have developed a chemistry during the past 6 months. Mayfield trust Higgins to be where he is supposed to be and Higgins appears to be rewarding that trust. If Mathews or anyone else comes in and surpasses any other player in the unit, so be it. But he should be required to do it by beating out the guys who have already earned their spot, here.

I would again just state that the Browns set their WR roster at the end of camp, and with the exception of trading Gordon away, this roster has remained set.
They have said all along that they liked the guys they have, and their actions have proved that assertion.
Could I see us dumping Streater if they came across a receiver they like more? Sure. However, I think that receiver would take the form of another veteran, who can help mentor the WR room, as opposed to playing a lot.

The last time I checked, the job of an NFL GM is to make every attempt to upgrade the talent on your roster at all 53 positions any time the opportunity presents itself. That's how teams are built and improved. Now sometimes those opportunities aren't able to be capitalized on, but the attempt should always be made.
I know fans get attached to our players. They sometimes overvalue some on our depth chart. But Rishard Matthews is a clear upgrade to some of our starting WR's. I believe Calloway may surpass him at some point, but that point isn't now.
IF we could sign Matthews, he would instantly be our #2 QR and Calloway would be the #3. That's most certainly an upgrade and that's exactly what every team is looking to do all of the time, upgrade.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

It ain't just about talent, if it was - Gordon would still be here. You want to "upgrade" to the detriment of young players who have worked hard to improve... and in doing so, bring in someone who appears to be a malcontent. I don't think you'll see that in this locker room, if they were willing to go that route - Dez would have been summoned hours after JG was traded.

This is practice squad, but still interesting. Browns Gave Practice Squad DT Huge Raise to Prevent Cowboys and Packers From Signing Him | 12up https://www.12up.com/posts/6182205-brown.../partners/44511Don't let anyone tell you practice squad players aren't appreciated. Current Browns DT Brian Price is in NFL purgatory, stuck on Cleveland's practice squad but also available for the entire league to poach should they wish. The team wants to avoid this at all costs, literally. The Browns are giving Price a significant raise to deter teams like the Cowboys and Packers from signing him. Price played his college ball at Texas-San Antonio and was signed by the Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2016. Since then, he's struggled to gain much footing at the professional level, as he was cut by the Cowboys and Raiders in his first go-around. Nonetheless, Price has plenty of potential but will have to wait his turn on Cleveland's defensive line. Whether it be due to injury or necessity, Price is likely to see the field at some point this season for the Browns. If not, that's a significant waste of an investment.

I'm a little confused with our DT situation. I keep hearing that GW wants a penetrating 3T, but we seem to have a bunch of 1T guys and I even hear Ogi called a 1T.
I'm no expert on the 3T and 1T as I'm just recently understanding it, however, I read about Coley, Davis, Lawrence, Price as being the same kind of guy with only Ogi having shown the ability to penetrate.
Would we go with 5 DTs on a team in desperate need of ST play from its backups?

I guess we will see about that. maybe it is as you say ON PAPER...but there are intangibles in this Team oriented sport. Attached, eh Homer effecting my credibility...ehhh.
No there is a bond that was made with Higgins and Mayfield. Higgins throughout training camp via some peeks with Hard Knocks believes in Mayfield. they have an obvious connection on the field.
Don't know the point you are trying to make outside discredit me with every post. I know I'm paranoid...lol
But let me tell you something about football. Its not Strat-O-Matic. Its got human beings involved and connections made on the field. This connection is there right now with Higgins. It means a lot.
Matthews added as an upgrade to our Willies or Ratley ok as long as it doesn't down grade some obvious connections that are here.
I don't think Dorsey will be looking that hard, now question is why is Matthews available? Why? is it just a cap thing?
I've always said you got to upgrade whenever and wherever possible. But this would not be a Higgins Matthews thing. Better or worse. It would be an addition to our roster that would have to be worked in. Not an automatic #2 or #3. He has to learn the plays, the route tree. But WR is a position that has rotation and many opportunities to get worked in.
If Dorsey sees this as a good opportunity...great. But Higgins right now is a big asset to this team and to Baker.

Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

Bingo +100 Exactly, If the Browns have a chance to sign Rishard Matthews jump at it, if for no other reason than to make other teams prepare against him. More options, get your first options, open more often,
and the more Wr's you can throw at a group of Db's, the better chance each individual Wr will have at a mismatch.
Which is why every time they cut a good, or potentially good option, like Gordon or Coleman, it has a ripple effect, I feel. Wow. For 24 years I've been trying to get this, (^the above 3 lines), as a point across, and hope the team would read. And I haven't been good with words until I stumbled into that ^. It's a philosophy, or a mission statement,( my whole dang reason to post), like Coca-Cola says they want everyone on earth to try a Coke before they die.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

The Practice Squad does count against the cap. There is no limit to what a team can play a player on the practice squad.
There was another team's practice squad QB, years ago, who we wanted to sign to our roster. That team gave him a big bump in salary to keep him. (I seem to recall that it was the Packers, but I am not sure now)

I would also add: I would guess that an agent would go to the team the player is currently on, and let them know they have an offer, allowing his current team to make a better offer.

I just don't believe you ever dismiss the opportunity to upgrade "skill". And in the end, I think skill wins out in playing time.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

If we don’t at least kick the tires i’ll Be dissapointed ....
He’s no slouch ... he’s way better than Dez today ... way better ...
He would be our #2 ... his speed is closer to Vice Grips though .. he’s no burner ... but he is a little faster than Vice Grips ...
He’d be a MAJOR UPGRADE to Streeter ... i forgot about him ...
He makes us a better football team ...
I hope were at least in the mix ...

I doubt the team wants Matthews.
They are building for the future, and I doubt they want a 29 year old guy who quit on his team.
