Rishard Matthews to work out for Browns, Cardinals

Free from Tennessee, Rishard Matthews is still in search of a new team, but that could change soon.

Matthews is scheduled to have workouts with two receiver-needy teams next week: the Cleveland Browns on Monday and the Arizona Cardinals on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old receiver was granted his release from the Tennessee Titans last week after requesting a way off the team. The front office tried to trade him but had no suitors.

Through three games in Tennessee this season, Matthews was on the field for 92 snaps and recorded just three receptions for 11 yards on six targets.

Cleveland could use another receiving threat after trading Josh Gordon to the New England Patriots earlier this season. Behind Jarvis Landry, rookie Antonio Callaway and Rashard Higgins have been the most targeted wideouts.

Arizona has sketchy receiver depth after future Hall of Famer Larry Fitzgerald. Chad Williams and rookie Christian Kirk are the Cardinals' second and third receivers, while J.J. Nelson has also seen snaps.

Just comparing teams, not possible contract terms. The Browns are unquestionably the more attractive destination. We are right in the divisional mix. The Cards are competing for the no. 1 pick.

He had been representing himself ... he hired Drew ... that’s gonna cost us to keep him from going to the desert ... we really really need him ... don’t really wanna overpay for him as much as we need him ....

Drew could throw a wrench in this ... ALTHOUGH Kirk had a good day today ... the rookie for Zona ... but him and Fitz are all they have ... so ... i really want him ... but it may not help out ...

He’d be a HUGE UPGRADE for us today ... HUGE ...

Losing Higgins hurts, but Haley really likes our young guys.

Willies played well when thrown into the deep end against the Rats, a team with one of the best CB combos in the NFL. They are actually 3 deep. I am looking forward to seeing Ratley on the field as well.

We might sign a veteran, but I really wouldn't count on it based on recent reports.

If u think that Callaway or Willies is ready ... your gonna be sadly dissapointed and i could care less what they say in Berea ... it’s CLEARLY EVIDENT Callaway’s no where near ready on many levels ....

Unfortunately were more than likely gonna find out ... its not gonna be pretty ...

And i LIKE WILLIES ... he’s just not ready ...

We’ll see either way ... even if we sign Matthews he won’t be ready for a week or two ...

Other than Landry ... RIGHT NOW ... our WR room STINKS ... there’s a ton of potential there ... but there NOT READY YET ...

To bad were all gonna have to suffer through finding out ...

Wouldn’t shock me if Streeter gets the start ... and i’m Not even sure why he’s on the team ... that signing made little to no sense to me ... but Dorseys doing pretty good so far so we’ll see ..

If he stays with this WR room as it is today with Higginss out ... its out of necessity ... not cause he thinks there gonna do a good job RIGHT NOW ...

This O has had 3 constants on O ...

Njoku dropping passes ...

Hubbard proving we still need a RT REALLY BAD ...

Callaway dropping passes and having no clue how to run a route or block ..

And now Higgins is gone .... WE NEED HELP NOW!!!!!!!

funny how 60 days ago the homers were proclaiming the Browns had the best group in the NFL.
now to current day the Browns are looking on the waiver wire.
I always like Dontrell Inman.
maybe the Browns should trade for Kelvin Benjamin whos unhappy in Buffalo.

The Cleveland Browns have signed RB Dontrell Hilliard to the active roster from the practice squad. To make room, the team waived DB Jerimiah McKinnon.

Hilliard is a 5-11, 202 pound rookie out of Tulane. Originally signed by the Browns as an undrafted free agent on May 4, Hilliard spent the first five weeks of the season on the club’s practice squad. He recorded 32 rushes for 82 yards and two receptions for 28 yards during the preseason. He is a native of Baton Rouge, La.

McKinnon made his NFL debut Sunday appearing on special teams. He spent the first four weeks of the season on the Browns’ practice squad.

I wonder what the point of bringing in another RB is at this particular point in time?

He isn't a return guy, is he?

I believe he did return kickoffs in preseason. My guess is this is strictly a special teams move.

Browns promote running back Dontrell Hilliard to active roster, waive cornerback Jeremiah McKinnon

By Nate Ulrich
Beacon Journal/Ohio.com

The Browns promoted undrafted rookie running back Dontrell Hilliard from their practice squad to the active roster on Tuesday and waived cornerback Jeremiah McKinnon.

The presence of Carlos Hyde, Duke Johnson and rookie second-round draft pick Nick Chubb gives the Browns more than enough quality running backs, but Hilliard was elevated to the 53-man roster in an effort to improve special teams.

McKinnon spent the first four weeks of the season on the practice squad before making his NFL debut and playing special teams in Sunday’s 12-9 overtime win over the Baltimore Ravens.

The Browns signed Hilliard on May 4 as an undrafted free agent out of Tulane. He spent the first five weeks of the season on their practice squad.

I'd suspect another team was about to poach him and we preferred to not lose him.... that, or we're about to trade one of our other RB's.

Browns is the Browns

... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

Maybe he's good on special teams. He's definitely not going to be active if he's only a running back.

Hopefully he can return punts and kicks.

Watched a couple highlight videos, he looks great in the open field but he's never really been a return man. Career at Tulane 8 punts returned for 25 yards, 18 KO for 15.4... 17 of those his freshman year - 2014.

Bio:
Two-year starter who led Tulane with 210 carries for 1,091 yards and 12 touchdowns and earned Second Team All-AAC honors in 2017. Was the team’s leading rusher with 759 yards and nine touchdowns on 135 carries as a junior. Combined to make four starts in his first two seasons with the Green Wave, rushing 212 times for 1,098 yards and nine TDs while adding 53 receptions for 511 yards and two scores.
Pos:
Tough, resilient ball carrier coming off a solid campaign. Patient, methodical and will pick and choose his spots throughout the course of his run. Displays outstanding vision, quickly finds the cutback lanes and immediately moves into open space. Keeps his feet moving, breaks arm tackles and displays tremendous short-area quickness with the ability to bounce around defenders. Helps the quarterback sell ball fakes and gives effort blocking.
Neg:
Really cannot create or make defenders miss. Not a back who’s going to pick up much yardage off initial contact. Marginal pass catcher out of the backfield.
Analysis:
Hilliard was a solid college ball carrier but has size and athletic limitations. His ability to catch the ball in camp this summer will be the deciding factor on whether he makes a roster.

Two things IMO:

1. He might improve our STs in one way or another
2. This might mean Duke will play more of a pass-catching role with Higgins out

I read his post. Hillard was used as a KO guy in the pre-season ... And I thought that he was the best canidate we had and he is also underrated as a RB imo.

During preseason I didn't like Hilliard much.
Seemed to go down too easy. He (at least when I was watching) went down on first contact way to often and lacked leg drive.
It's just one of the things that turns me off when evaluating Backs.
Make contact keep ya legs driving and fall forward. Doesn't matter if you a one cut back or a scat back.
He didn't seem to do these things. I hope he has improved because he got the call and he is gonna get his shot.

Cheers from the Isle Mr. Hilliard !!!

Well, I went back and he certainly got a good look in the final preseason game vs Detroit.

KO RETURNS
Dontrell Hilliard 3 69 23.0 26 (long)

RUSHING
Dontrell Hilliard 18 54 3.0 9

RECEIVING
Dontrell Hilliard 2 28 14.0 19

Before that it was a whole lotta nothin'. No returns and 12 rushes for 28.

I did notice that C J Board got a lot of reps on punt returns and seemed to be the most consistent of the bunch.

Not sure there's much meaning to the term "kick return specialist" in 2018?

From Browns mailbag:

Quote:
A player to keep an eye on for special teams moving forward is rookie running back Dontrell Hilliard, who was elevated from the practice squad Tuesday. Hilliard returned 18 kickoffs for 278 yards at Tulane and handled returns during the second halves of most of Cleveland's preseason games.

This is his chance, he will be returning kicks or punts versus Chargers.

Should just have him return both then. Sturgis will give him a couple cracks on kick returns, I mean, if we let them score.

The kid is shifty, has deceptive speed and very quick feet. An overnight sensation on special teams would be some nice icing on this cake we've been baking.

Yeah, I guess deceptive isn't the best description. It's clear to everyone that he has sheer speed, it think he does seem to deceive defenders with how quickly he's at full speed. Some people burst through a hole, he looks like he was shot through it at times.

Yes, he is a very fluid runner ... He heads due North when he sees a crease developing ... That is why I think that he can be an effective KO specialist for us. That together with his speed.
