I hated everything Dorsey did.
Except I was wrong about every single thing, and everything Dorsey did was gold.
So, despite me liking the current coaches, I am all good with whomever Dorsey picks.

Head coaching record Regular season: 125–77–2 (.618) Postseason: 10–8 (.556) Career: 135–85–2 (.613) Plus, he is the polar opposite of Freddie and he always seems to have a horrid defense. NFL head coaches under whom Mike McCarthy has served: Marty Schottenheimer, Kansas City Chiefs (1993–1998) Ray Rhodes, Green Bay Packers (1999) Jim Haslett, New Orleans Saints (2000–2004) Mike Nolan, San Francisco 49ers (2005) Assistant coaches under Mike McCarthy who became NFL head coaches: Joe Philbin, Miami Dolphins (2012–2015), Green Bay Packers, interim (2018) Ben McAdoo, New York Giants (2016–2017) Assistant coaches under Mike McCarthy who became NCAA head coaches: Jeff Jagodzinski, Boston College (2007–2008)

I want a head coach who is going to be able to enforce discipline.
I think that this was possibly Hue's greatest failing. The change since Williams was named head coach has been incredible. The team has played more like a team. They have cut the mistakes. They stopped dropping every 4th or 5th pass.
This is, and will next year still be, a young team. We need a coach who can set, and enforce standards .... and who can reach both young players and veterans.
The next head coach also needs to be able to handle things like replay, the officials, and running a coaching staff.
I look at a lot of the usual suspects, and am unimpressed. I don't really see much of the coordinators who are rumored to be the next big thing. I do like the possibility of Freddie, but who knows for sure? I would prefer him to bringing in the next "hot coordinator" on the list. I also like some of our offensive assistants a great deal. I really like Henry at WR Coach, and Wylie at OL coach. It's hard to deny what they have done with their respective units. In addition to Kitchen, I think that they make a great base for an offensive staff.
It will be interesting to see who interviews, and who we hire. I am both excited, and worried.

Don't particularly want McCarthy but I'd rather have him then a lot of the other names being thrown around.

I know we've contacted McCarthy ( LINK ) but to say he's GOING to be the guy seems a bit hasty. We know that Little is getting an interview. And we have to do the Rooney Rule interview too, I believe. And I have been wondering how much the former Packer execs in our front office might really like McCarthy.

I see zero need for a coaching change

Stay with Williams, who we have now. If it's not broke, don't fix it.

Considering the origin of the rumor, I’d guess an Arizona executive informed the reporter that McCarthy is more interested in the Cleveland opening.
It’s only one part of the equation, though. As far as I’m aware, Dorsey doesn’t have any close connections to the Cardinals front office. Almost certainly none close enough to share such sensitive information with, like his preference for his next head coach. Maybe McCarthy’s agent spilled the details to the reporter’s source, but that seems like a stretch, too.
That said, where there’s smoke, there’s often fire, and I wouldn’t be surprised if McCarthy is near the top of Dorsey’s list. There would be a lot of familiarity between the coaching staff and the front office in terms of needs and fits. Not to mention, it’s likely they have a more favorable view of his tenure in Green Bay than most because the Packers contingent contributed to it.
Now, two caveats: One, the fact that they worked together for so long could also work against McCarthy. Maybe they feel McCarthy mismanaged the head coach-quarterback relationship. Maybe they feel McCarthy underperformed given the talent they supplied. Maybe Eliot Wolf was passed over for the general manager’s job because he wanted to move on from McCarthy and Mark Murphy wanted to take the last-chance route. If I recall correctly, McCarthy was not part of those interviews.
Two, an interview could be a case of being interested without being sold. Personally, I don’t see the harm in contacting him, but I would need to hear a lot of critical introspection to continue further. I think he did a great job of guiding Rodgers’ development. I don’t think he’s received enough credit for that; however, he owns a significant share of blame for their recent struggles despite having one of the most talented quarterbacks of all-time. That offense did not develop much between 2006 and 2018. And, in case you’ve noticed, the NFL changed around him.
Overall, I would be disappointed if we dismantled the current coaching staff for McCarthy, especially if the latter was announced after his interview and the courtesy interviews of Williams and a to-be-determined minority candidate. That’s not how I want the process to unfold, but I’m not going to pretend that kind of cocooned approach is impossible, either.

All I know is nobody had a CLUE about Dorsey's draft for months ... there were rumors and innuendo every single minute ... I have to think the HC hire will be the same sort of thing until a decision is actually made

If you look at the way the draft was handled, very few saw us taking Baker given the stories being bandied about. It's quite possible the same thing is happening with this coaching search. The stories out now have us looking at everyone but Williams, just as during the draft they had us looking at everyone but Baker. Dorsey's good at manipulating the media.

I don't really have an opinion on what to do in this situation I trust Dorsey to sort this out and offer up the best possible situation for the Browns to ascend to the top of the league.
I feel like this is a delicate situation I lean towards Williams but I also think that maybe possibly a better coaching candidate is available.
I want to build on what we have started and I see keeping Williams as the HC being a sensible way for that to happen.
In all honesty no matter if we change the name on the door for HC I want to keep Williams and Kitchen, that said McCarthy will want to run his offense, no thanks. I would go with Arians at this point to be honest I think he would be a great fit for what we are doing and would most likely KEEP the coordinators we have. The only area I have concern with is the ST coach he must go IMO.
But I admit I am confused about what to do, this is a tough one.

Agree with you 100%. I trust Dorsey. I would prefer to keep GW. McCarthy is one of several I have no interest in.
As tight as Dorsey and the organization was on Baker - and there are a LOT more people involved in that decision - I won't read too much into anything until an announcement is made or is imminent regarding the HC. I expect a lot of noise that won't be based on anything except speculation.

I may have egg on my face. Just saw a post on another board - a tweet - that the Browns have reached out to McCarthy. Seems odd. I think they could have done it at any time. I would still be surprised if this were the hire, but I'll be honest before seeing that I would have put the chances at 0%. They could have but it seems to me that would be bad form on Dorseys part. I think that would have created a in season distraction.

Personally, I am pulling for Dorsey to keep the coaching staff together. I do think that GW needs someone to take over handling the clock and challenges. He's been pretty bad in that department.
However, the team is much more disciplined than it was under Hue. We can see that by the reduction in penalties. I think that is important.
Kitchens is one of the few guys in the league that really impress me in terms of scheme and play calling. Shanny is the best. Andy Reid is another. McVay w/the Rams is very good and so is McDaniels in New England.
I really like how all of those guys use formations early in the game to set tendencies [in the minds of the defense] and then run something off of them that helps break guys wide open. The long TD pass to Landry yesterday is an example of that. They gave that look several times yesterday and then ran a completely different route tree on that particular play. That is very good stuff.
I think Williams and his son are pretty good at making in-game defensive adjustments. That's not something a lot of our past defensive coaches have been successful with.
I have a lot of hope for this current team. My only trepidation is if we hire a coach who comes in here and wants to make significant schematical changes. We've seen that occur too many times and the roster is reworked. No, we won't be replacing Baker, Myles, Chubb, Ward, etc........but other guys will be replaced w/guys who fit the new system.

IMO Dorsey’s first two priorities for this hire will be ...
- a HC thats not gonna bring in a system that doesn’t utilize the talent HE BROUGHT in ... u drove that point home to me last night ... that was a GREAT POINT and i look forward to that thread ....
- said HC will either be an O guy to work with and bring Bake along OR he will bring in an OC “tailored” to Bake at this stage of his career ...
I get the continuity thing bro ... i just dont see King John making a hire thats gonna rock the boat like that ... it would make no sense ...

I see zero need for a coaching change I agree, don't fix what isn't broken. This could blow back in our face. Learning new systems will only set this team back a minimum of 1 year.

Good post Vers.
I love Greg Williams but Pluto made the best point about this search. We don't want Mangini and kokpuffs, we don't want pet vs farmer, we don't want that conflict of Hc vs gm.
I still think it's Kitchens job, but I want these guys to take their time and get it right.
On McCarthy, I don't see him fitting with Baker. I was certain he would interview but I think he is bound for the jets or fins.
GW long term I don't know if we could get past the timeout instead challenge, the taking 3 to go up by 4 Type things and its probably why he doesn't get it.
Kitchens imho would be perfect but he would need his Sgt. major to keep the troops in line. U just don't mess with what he has going with Baker and these players.

I think my first choice would be Williams-HC, Kitchens OC and hire a new DC. One thing I liked about Williams is that unlike Hue, Pettine etc. He seemed to make adjustments at halftime and/or anticipate opponents adjustments. I remember many a game under our past regimes where we played a solid first half and then got blown out in the second.

I'm hearing this guy needs to tone down this report. After watching Dorsey's conference, He's not showing his hand to anybody. Reporters tried to get him to reveal some names and he said nothing. He wouldn't even reveal who was on the committee in making the decision.

A lot of agents will put the names of their clients out there just to get their name circulating. In other situations a coach we are interested in will tell u early Not interested but doesn't want the world to know he passed on an interview for respect of the team.

So, is GW getting an interview too? Yes, in fact, he is really the only one he confirmed that he is interviewing and gave a date. He said GW paid his dues for his mistakes in NO. He said he wants to hear from GW. He wants to kick some tires too. He said Freddie deserved an interview. He gave info on what he wants from a head coach. He said the HC will ultimate decide the coaches and wouldn't commit that Freddie would even be back. He danced around Freddie's interview date. He wouldn't even confirm that he was going to interview McCarthy. Bottom line seems to be that Dorsey is Fort Knox and will not show his hand. He will only confirm when an interview has actually taken place. Everything else is just speculation.
