I hadn’t realized Avery hasn’t played. Anyone know definitively why? I thought he was pretty good last year.
OL is the only thing I could see trading for. I think they’re every bit as bad as I think. They’ve had 1-1/2 decent games in 4. You can say Baker held the ball too long but there’s so little time. We’re very limited in slow developing down field plays with this OL. About half our screen plays have gotten blown up because our linemen are sssllllowwww. Williams from the Redskins for a 3rd rounder straight up but the skins won’t take that. I’ve heard they want a first for a 31yrd old, admittedly still very good, LT. I think a 3rd is worth the 3/4 of a season and the 2 years guaranteed contract you give him at the end of the season. But like I said, not going to happen.

Avery is in the dawg house for several reasons...shame, evidently he has some attitude issues and probably won't be for long here.

All the advanced stats are contrary to this notion that our OL is playing bad. The stats have been posted on several threads. The stats were also posted that Baker was holding the ball the third longest in the league. That might have changed after this last game as we emphasized trying to get rid of it quicker, but I haven't seen the updated stats.
I have said this many times, but it's really hard for fans to tell if the OL or the QB is at fault. Most teams try to have the ball out of the qb's hand in 1.8 to 2.1 seconds. Analytics guys put the cut-off at 2.5 seconds. It's hard to differentiate on who is to blame when your talking about a second or so.
Not getting on your case about it, but this notion that the OL is playing bad is said quite often on this board and I think the facts say otherwise.

I have to agree with the above that the OL is playing better than they are often credited. Kush has been a surprise and has played above and beyond what we all expected from a journeyman. Bitonio has been excellent as has Tretter. Add to it Pharoah Brown as a 6th lineman and our game finally opened up. The penalties along the line have also dropped significantly.

I wish someone in the Cleveland media had the stones to pose the " Whats with Avery " question .. I know that would be a lot to ask from a Cleveland Sports reporter ..

I think he's a DE (only) in the minds of the coaches. He's behind Chris Smith and Chad Thomas - at least in their minds. I would hate to see us trade him.

Just read on the Browns site that he has been beat out by our current rotation. It doesn't help him that we are primarily only using 2 LB's this year.

The only negative I have heard about Avery was from Doug Dieken in a radio interview. Doug said they weren't happy with the weight he reported at, and that it was higher than they wanted it to be.

Well if they see him as a DE only , I'm not impressed with their eye sight . If whom ever thinks Chad Thomas is better I will chip in for new glass's for them .. lol

I have no link or proof, but I think this is a good take. I think Avery is an edge rusher and Smith and Thomas are ahead of him in the minds of the coaches. Btw----------I haven't heard anything about attitude problems.

I hope we don't make any trades. We have more than enough talent. And I don't want to start trading away picks for rentals. I agree. Some things take time. We have done a good job to this point in adding players. Go in to the off season, sign some free agents, including some of our guys, then draft some more good players.

I second this .. we have the talent and have already seen us improve and gel a bit. Plus, we’re now getting some players BACK too

I’d take an upgrade over Hubbard at RT for a 3rd or 4th rounder in a heartbeat ...
I’d also take a swing tackle or back up guard for a 5th or 6th rounder in a nanoo second ... same for a back up LBer since kirksey and now Harvey are done for the year ...
None of the above will hurt our future much at all and were built to win NOW!!!!!

They already made a trade for a backup guard prior to the season starting.

From Pluto:
"HEY, TERRY: What is the problem with Genard Avery?
– Brian McDonald Hudson
HEY, BRIAN: I’ve wondered the same thing until this past week. Then I began to figure it out. New defensive coordinator Steve Wilks prefers to play the game with two linebackers and five defensive backs. Joe Schobert is having a Pro Bowl year. Mack Wilson looks like a steal in the fifth round. They are the linebackers. For a while, Avery played there. Avery is probably best at defensive end, but the trade for Olivier Vernon filled the defensive end spot opposite Myles Garrett. But the main issue is only two linebackers. There is depth in case of injury. Lots of fans asked about the second-year player from Memphis."

OK ... then a swing tackle, back up LBer and upgrade at RT are still on my wish list for the right price ... especially if one of the teams decides to put everyone on on the trade block at blue light special pricing ... And in a fire sale ... maybe a better back up guard ...

We should consider trading with the Broncos, Bengals and Dolphins for an OL starter. All those teams will be in fire sale mode after this week.

Jason La Canfora There is already a lot of action on the trade deadline front with so many winless teams and with rebuilds becoming more commonplace. Who are the movers and shakers? (And definitely add the Browns to this list of motivated buyers, by the way): https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/patri...trade-deadline/

And you can't win without a top five player in the NBA. For sure, which is why the NBA has been so painful to watch in recent years. The games don't even matter til the playoffs and even then probably not til the Semi-Finals or Finals. And even then only if whatever star packed team gets injuries. I reaaaally don't want the NFL to turn into that

I don't think it will turn to that.
In the NBA all you need is that 'one" player to get to the top.
Even with a QB, you have to have a lot of other things, and I am not on who thinks you have to have a top QB to win in the NFL.
You can't have a bum, but a middle of the road QB is enough if you have a good team around him. You don't have to tank to draft a good enough QB.

How many teams with "just guys" at QB have won Super Bowls in the past decade or so?
Not many.

Also point taken about the NBA teams also tanking. I guess we need a better fix. My point is something needs to be done and not just teams taking 2-3 years off from the league or having no chance. Also also, I don't think we need it YET. You can still find someone like a Russell Wilson, Tom Brady, etc. later on and build around them with good weapons. If they change the rules anymore to favor the QB though it will be a catastrophe.

The Redskins and Bengals are just bad. They have tried to stockpile picks and were signing free agents on the off-season. They were trying to be good (which makes it that much worse that they are terrible).

I have to think that Jay Gruden and Dan Quinn aren’t long for the season ... wonder if ATL might be another team looking to shed?

Not many. In the past 10 years, the Superbowl winning Qb's have been: Tom Brady x3 Nick Foles Payton Manning Russell Wilson Joe Flacco Eli Manning Aaron Rodgers Drew Brees I think most of us would agree on Brady, Brees, Rodgers Probably Wilson too Payton was a well past his prime Qb and you coulsd argue that he was "just a guy" that season. Eli is another quandary in my mind. I think that for the majority of his career he was "just a guy" but during those Superbowl runs, he was pretty spectacular Flacco is "just a guy" Foles/Wentz is "just a guy" too If we go back 5 more years we add: A 4th for Brady 2 for Big Ben A 2nd for Payton who was a stud at that time And a 2nd for Eli
