Ammo,, I can agree with you totally on the reasons for our defensive struggles. Injuries, lack of talent etc etc.. Those are key to our lack of success.. even still, our D, up to these last two games hadn't been horrible. Just not dominating like the 3-4 can be with the right people playing. Offensively, sticking with Mo probably retarded this team But I do understand why RAC probably did it. Loyalty is probably the main factor. Mis placed loyalty to be sure! As for Frye, I was sure that with more talent around him, he could have succeeded. And maybe in time, he could have. But after the mess against Pittsburgh, I was not so convinced any longer. I'd have been ok with RAC had he given him another chance.. But it would have to be a very very short leash again and I couldn't see that helping the situation.. only hurting it. Anderson didn't exactly knock my socks off in the Pittsburgh game either, but given that Frye probably got most of the prep,,, it kinda makes sense I suppose. Who knew that Anderson would throw for over 300 yards and 5 TD's to 3 different receivers and end up being the AFC Offensive Player of the week and the FedX Air winner for the week. There isn't anyone that knew that one.. I bet not even Chud, RAC and Savage suspected that would have happened.. But that doesn't even matter really. Because even if it was a fluke, Anderson kinda proved he could hold down the fort until Quinn is ready.. Maybe we can even take our time with him now... for a moment, that didn't look likely! As for RAC.. how anyone could fairly judge him on the first two years with that lack of talent is beyond me.. and then there is the PROFOUNDLY DUMB question: "What about RAC makes you think he can be a Great HC?" And no matter how many times you answer it,,, if you didn't answer it that posters way,, then you were a liar... NICE huh? I'm still wondering why he's not been banned for name calling... So Ammo,, as you can see, you and I basically agree on most points and even on the ones we aren't in complete agreement, at least your not calling me names, and I'm not asking you if you were dropped on your head as a child

I really didn't see it as being all that dumb of a question... I know that I have a certain sarcasm on the boards that gets laid on pretty thick sometimes but I really was really trying to understand WHY you guys felt the way you did because I am not AT ALL seeing your reasoning equate to gameday COACHING improvements on a consistent basis...
You and "B" replied and gave me your reasons and although I am not in agreement with them nor do I understand them, I am not going to litter the thread with countless posts trying to beat my opinion into you...
I respect the HELL out of Eo and SEVERAL of my fellow posters but I am a different generation Browns fan than some of you "seasoned" bucks... Eo and I went round and round about Mo last year and his reasoning for defending him prior to the Axe falling was "Continuity." I agree on the importance of that ALOT but in the case with Mo, you don't hold onto the weak link of your chain just because you are afraid the whole chain will break if you cut the one link lose... We are noticeably a better offense with Chud now and the move was much needed... And just so we are clear, this was NOT an "I told you so" example, I am just merely pointing out that sometimes you have to look beyond the continuity argument and judge the performance...
I see the talent level rising and I have seen what the players can do when they have a gameplan... I just expect RAC to keep them focused for a 16 game season... Last week was an AWESOME start but until we can come into EACH game as prepared as last week, I will have my reservations about Rac... In this league, it is all about winning but for RAC to sniff 08 as a HC, it is more abotu improvement than the Win/Loss Column... JMHO
This IS a put up or shut up year for him and I REALLY REALLY want to see him Put up!! It is AWESOME that our players love him... I see him as a GENUINE guy and one of those people that you WANT to see succeed as he as paid his dues through the years... Just think it is time to prove to us fans that he WAS the right man for the job...

Defensively, you haven't seen the "exotic blitzes" because we haven't had the personnel to run them. Keep it Simple Stupid is the key tagline before now. You have to walk before you can run. I think you'll see more and more now that we have the pieces to the puzzle.
Other than that, not too bad a post. Congrats on a post that makes some sense
Point taken, I've heard it many times. I want to believe it. Here's the counterpoint that runs through my head...
I saw the Jets play last year and it looked like they did many things the Pats did...I don't think their personnel was more suited to run the 3-4 than ours was. They had the same problems we had switching to the 3-4...couldn't get to the QB well (especially cuz they traded John Abraham)...atrocious vs. the run. Yet we still saw the same Belichick principles in Mangini's defense. They had a soft schedule, drafted two OL in the first and had a smart QB at the helm, and made the playoffs. I know we don't compare well with the Jets last year...I'm just making the point that I saw a lot more blitzing from the Jets D.
I'd like to think that we back off the blitz due to the lack of depth at DB though. Or perhaps RAC is more of a Parcells disciple than a Belichick disciple.

I really didn't see it as being all that dumb of a question
I didn't know you asked it also,, Pit was making a big deal out of that question.. but you did not..
But you know what DS44,, your a decent guy, so for you, I'll answer it
There isn't anything that screams that RAC will be a Great Coach... I mean other than his players stand by his side. But that in and of itself isn't really a good reason to think that he's guaranteed to be a GREAT COACH..
Now, on the other side, I don't think there is much to say he won't be either! I can however see how those that have an agenda would think that every little thing that goes wrong is on RAC and therefore he should go.. I see it, I just don't think it's reasonable or responsible...
Example:
He flipped a coin,,, FIRE HIM he sucks He Stuck with MO,,, Fire him He sucks He started Frye too soon,,, Fire him, he sucks
Ask yourself this,, if we had won the Pittsburgh game and also the Cinci game, would a coin flip, hanging on to Mo too long and starting Frye too soon be a big deal in anyones mind?
Then look at some of the most successfull coaches out there and try to tell me that they have never been wrong and they have never made a mistake! Be my guest..
But for some reason, around here,, a guy talks about a coin flip and he's a looser with a Capital L tattooed on his forehead.... Talk about lame thinking.
Thus the reason I advocate NOT getting rid of him and NOT going for the Knee Jerk Reactions of some other people..
Reasons to keep him:
He's never until now, had a team with this much talent. Is it enough for the playoffs, hell if I know.. I tend to doubt it.
He's had more than his share of injuries to deal with. Some teams have had similar situations and fallen also. Firing a coach because the team has no Talent and injury problems seems about as DUMB as can be.. But some will still advocate it I suppose.
I hope I answered it for ya,, but if not, I know you will let me know
What I hope for is that EVERYONE of us would put our agendas back in thier holsters... and realize that if RAC is successful, that will generally mean the Browns are successful... and that's a good thing!

I can't determine if that's a Fruedian slip or the product of a very disturbed mind, either way it's funny.
"iggyied"
Did I actually see that on a football message board? Halftime adjustments. Lets see,12 min.half.1-2 min to get in off the field.1-2 min.to take a P .1-2 min to grab a drink and get a seat.1-2 to get back out on the field.Allot time for each unit to spend with coordinator.Doesn't leave the HC much time to "make adjustments".
Indecision may,or maynot,be my problem

Just a quick general reply cause obvious the faction who want RAC gone totally ignore my posts...COWARDS...lol
Then again I try not to be redundant - Pit how often did you post on this thread? You had that much to say I posted once. And got not a one response and I tried to keep it football.
But I see all these remarks on needing justifications on WHY RAC IS A GREAT HEAD COACH...can't he just be a good Head Coach and we'll leave the great for when and if we win any SBs...like Dungy.
Its simple and its called building through the draft. Its simple and its called building the foundations OL and D front 7.
We are not done in building - we are getting close where we can become competitive. The team is young in its stars...none have arrived. There is a major lack of leadership. These are our leaders of the future who will mentor all our draft picks from hence on.
You think thats an easy task? To teach these kids how to be MEN not only football players? Great Coaches come from - CONTINUITY!!!
Look how long it took Dungy to become a GREAT COACH.
You want evidence....how bout a team that came out with great adversity, a very avg. QB a fairly new OL and a RB supposedly over the hill and they go and break an NFL record Offensively.
And don't give me any BS about 2004...that game we were grossly behind the entire game and had to be in some spread offense catching up. Last Sunday we were simply using our normal playbook and executing from it.
This was just the tip of the iceberg. It won't happen everygame...YET! But we are building up to it. The more continuity the more apt you are to EXECUTE. It simply is common sense.
The ability to teach is the hidden denominator that you Anti-RACers simply cannot see and what you cannot see you simply think that it does not exist. But he has taken on the tough task to teach these talented kids and form a team out of them. Their ego's are fragile and they are almost afraid to win. Last week could have been an awakening. The talent is there, the teaching is there. Believing has to be there too!
Got to run.
JMHO
That is a good post eo. And many things you've stated are quite valid. Many "points" that people have made about "building the foundation" the "lack of talent" the "youth of our team" etc..... are all extremly valid reasons why we are "not winning".
There is one very real thing I can not bring myself to accept. It appears that many of you can, however,I simply can not. Maybe the problem is I have lived my life in a business that is directly result orientated and steady progress on a strict schedule must be attained..............
But at any rate,my feelings are fairly of a basic nature.
When building a structure, you have a completion deadline. Usually unless it's a big structure,it's less than a year. But on some bigger, more complex projects,it is spread out over a period of years done in increments. Building by building.
But regardless, this is into year three of a five year project any way you wish to look at it. Now I've ran my own business on a smaller scale and been a superintendant on a medium scale. Also a foreman in a very a large scale operation.
I have both evaluated employees in some positions and been evaluated. I can say that being "right on time" within the schedule of completion is not the "end all" of your evaluation, but is a very large part of it. When you are behind schedule, people look at other indicators to see if they feel the potential is there given the circumstances,to complete the scheduled task at hand. It is a business, and as such, you can see things AND you CAN pinpoint indications as to wheather you honestly feel someone is capable of accomplishing the job they've been given. Period!
Obviously many of you do not share that view. Which is fine by me. One thing I can say for certain,if I have a monumental task at hand,I can't simply explain away the fact that going into year three of a five year project, that what's holding me up is my "foundation".
I do understand that to breed "success" with a football team (ie...playoffs,super bowls) you need a fairly complete cast. But not to progress, improve and simply overall improve the product on the field on a weekly basis. That goes without saying. But to show progress during the first 2+ years of a project,if I hadn't "moved forward toward that goal in the field",my superiors would most certainly be looking for indicators showing that I had the abilities it takes to achieve my goal within my scheduled time frame.
I mean you don't need an "all star cast" or "every piece of the foundation" to "play respectable football". Which is exactly the picture I seem to be getting here.
I know football isn't construction. And I realise it is not an "identical comparison". But IF RAC doesn't reach .500 this year, football is still a business. The Browns are a corperation. And as with any corperation, they will expect to see substantial progress either during year three,or by the end of it. Much as I've done here.
They will look at how as the talent gradually got better, the results should have gotten better too. They will wonder why it hasn't. They will look to see what if anything indicates it will. That's just business. They won't be buying into an extremly sub par performance with average talent. Life doesn't work that way. Well, accept maybe on a message board.
You can say pretty much what you will, but if I'm a good supervisor,I can complete my project in a reasonable time frame with personnel turnover. I can show better efficiancy as the project progresses. I can pinpoint and show measurable success and things I've done to improve things.
And I feel RAC,wheather you see that as right or wrong, will be held to those same standards. In basketball, baseball, football or construction. All are result orientated businesses. And beyond all the rationale, results,or the strong signs of results quickly becoming reality are precisely what is looked at....................
So at this juncture, there's really not much left to do but see how it all pans out. Wheather RAC can lead this group of young, but VERY talented players and show results,or wheather he can't. Wheather he's the type of leader who can motivate players to play to their full potential on a regular basis,or he can't.
Because in the end, that is precisely the gauge he will be judged by.If you expect a corperation to wait untill he has "studs at every position" to show signs of success,I think you're in for a major disapointment. Or if you think they'll wait untill "everybody playing has been *in his system* for years" I think you're decieving yourselves. That's not based in reality.
Despite what anyone says,I hope he proves himself to be "the real deal". Because that is the quickest, most painless way for all of us to see what we've long waited for. But if not,I will totally understand and support change. Because stagnation and underachieving, not getting the full potential out of your personnel,is a futile effort and a huge waste of time. Not "continuity".

But yet it SHOULD be enough time for them to identify the "fix for the 1st half mistakes.. Or not so much "fix" for it but a way to counter it... I realize there is a time crunch at the half but it is there for the MOST GLARING adjustments that have either made or broke the 1st half of play... Exploiting the weaknesses for the next half of play...

"When building a structure, you have a completion deadline."
Yep, and that completion deadline was 2003 - just about when Carmine started to abandon ship.
2004 was the nervous breakdown and the reality that Butch's days were done. But basically the year was purgatory
2005 was the cleanup. 2006 was the foundation. 2007 was the Franchise corner pieces.
The deadline was spelled out to us...but none want to hear about a 5 year plan again. Some teams in the NFL that do have an existing foundation after a blow up can consider a 3 year plan. We did not have that luxery. 5 year plan as in SB contenders...Dynasty days are here.
Savage is not done. RAC is still teaching...go reread my first post on this thread there was much much more meaningful answers to a lot of your questions.
The fact of the matter is...they have told us repeatedly that they had a 5 year plan. Many have simply chosen to ignore it. Its there. Lets see how this season enfolds if the injuries are held to a minimum we actually will have a NFL playoff caliber team by years end...whether its too late to get in the playoffs...I can't say nor predict that. I'm talking about progressing this season with minimal injuries so that we can stay consistent with what little continuity that we have.

Daman, One of your best posts that I have ever read... And believe it or not, I agree with almost all of it... Where I stand is that the details of the coinflip, sticking with Frye etc. etc. play into the other things he has going against him such as injuries and lack of talent... Where I have lost my faith in him has not been because we have lost to our division as much as we have under RAC, it is the lack of preparation (save last week of course) that we consistantly see... If it weren't the norm, I wouldn;t have my doubts as EVERY coach has growing pains... We got our ass handed to us BAD against Pitt... I EXPECTED us to lose but the team looked LOST... He had 8 months to set up a framework to put it to them and the failure wasn't where my gripe is, the issue lies with NOONE looking on the same page... That spells confusion more than lack of talent or ANY other detractors... CLEARY we are subpar to Pitt (for now) but we have ENOUGH talent to perform and execute a gameplan better than we proved to do in our season opener and atleast NOT look like a Pop Warner team out there like we did... Just my .02

There are several things that I didn't like from RAC - the coin flip I thought was an insult to the players - CF n DA. I understand what RAC was doing. Both were going to get an equal shot and it didn't really matter which one went first. Still its something that shouldn't have been done.
The 2nd thing I thought was wrong was "The Competition" not in its entirety but I thought after the 2nd pre-season game a starter had to be chosen and everything from hence on geared to our Opener...3rd pre-season game as a tune up and then 2 more weeks preparing us for one thing...THE STEELERS. But we had that lingering competition including the week of the Steeler game. It didn't surprise me that we came out flat. RAC doesn't get a complete free ride. But these aren't errors that will be repeated. Almost can't be repeated.
But most important...an error does not define a man's worth. Yes, I think RAC has made mistakes. He is not perfection. But that doesn't mean he is not a good head coach. It does not eliminate him from possibly being a Great Head Coach. If you listen to the fans Dungy would have been gone. Believe it or not Cowher would have been gone. And if I followed those teams I would come up with a litany of mistakes made by them that are as bad or worse than RAC mistakes to date.

I don't know if it was an insult,, the players in question could tell you better than any of us.. But I thought it was poorly handled.. it should have been an internal thing that not even the players were aware took place.. And without a doubt,, the press and fans didn't need to know...
I like competition,, but again, Like you, I thought it was mishandled.. What's this switching back and forth stuff,,,, I didn't like it. And you are correct, it shouldn't have taken that long to figure out your starter.
I don't know this, but it could be as simple as it was reported.. Folks in the FO wanted Anderson to be the starter but he couldn't beat out Frye,,, that's gotta be a hell of a quandry..
And maybe, and we may never know this, Frye gets pulled from the first game, he gives the team what for and two days later,, he's gone. I'd like to think that Charlie had more class than that, but you just never know...
All of that aside, do you think this discussion would even be taking place had we won our first two games?

The point being eo,during a five year building plan, there are visual signs and benchmarks that show progress along the way. Not strictly in accumulated talent, but in garnering positive results "as you grow".
You don't go from 0-120 mph in 1.1 seconds. I fully understand the "five year plan" concept despite what the Rome wannabe's have to say. That's not an issue with me.
Point being,by year three of a five year plan, not only is the quality of the material your using to build the structure need to be looked at (talent acquired), but how those materials are being applied and constructed to build a sound structure. And if you are achieving the proper growth in the progression of that structure.
A football team isn't like an orchid,it isn't going to blossom into a beautifull flower overmight. Much like you have stated,it's a work in progress. And being such, measurable progress must be achieved during that time frame to show that the goal will be attainable in the end result.

However, building a football team is not always a linear process. If you replaced your entire crew of workers and hired all new ones, you would experience set backs. If members of your crew got injured, there would be set backs in progress. RAC does not live in your fantasy world where everything moves along at linear pace. There are bumps in the road and obstacles that need to be overcome.

True. You would suffer set backs to one extent or the other. Sometimes only minor ones and sometimes major ones. Depending on the time, place and circumstances. That's why you don't do that unless and untill you see stagnation. When you give a guy the materials and the crew to work with and he simply doesn't appear to be able to get the job done. That's precisely why you measure the progress and look for benchmarks along the way. It's not something you want to do,but sometimes becomes a necassary part of the process.

He is squarely entrenched smack dab in the middle of a major corperation just as I'm talking about. And that's a reality. Believing otherwise is the only fantasy being alluded to.

Yes there are. There are those who find ways to overcome obstacles and carry on,then there are those who can't. To this point, nobody can convincingly state for sure which category RAC falls into. All we have are indications along the way.

I've built a football team or two but never a house so I cannot comment on your construction analysis but its too Confucious for me...lol
"He who farts in church - will sit in his own pew" - Confucious 420BC
But as for year three...all I know is we are 1-1 and the beginning part of this season was to be our toughest stretch. Almost all had us 0-2 and for us to logically be 1-5 by our bye break. So where is anyone coming from telling me there is no indications that we are making strides in year 3. We are ahead of the game already...and I for one hope to see a little more before I evaluate on what level of strides we are taking.
This is a young team and unpredictable in its youthful stage of becoming a team.

let's see where we're at by the bye... then I'll make judgement if we are improving... I think we have more talent now than we did... and I like RAC and Chud... but our defense needs to drastically improve in these next few games.

I'm not gonna say today is an indictment of Romeo...
But it sure looks like it. We bring in the guy as a defensive guy and our D has not improved whatsoever.
Is there youth and inexperience? Absolutely. But when you add guys like Wimbley and Peek and still can't get to the QB against a below average offensive line, that's a major red flag.
When you give up over 100 yards to an average NFL back and a bad offensive line, that's a major red flag.
When our young defensive guys don't appear to be coached up and improving...that's a major red flag.
When you give up 3rd and 28 on a SCREEN that you knew was coming (come on, a draw, screen or bomb on 3rd and long)...that's not a sign of a well prepared team.

Something just occurred to me..... The Zastudil Effect. He's the reason for all of this, I mean, let's look at the facts:
FACT: It is better to have a good punter and not need him than it is to need a good punter and not have it. FACT: In games we have needed a good punter, we haven't had Zastudil FACT: When Zastudil is healthy, our offense is on fire. We avg. 51 pts/game this year with Zastudil as our punter. FACT: When he is our punter, we win 100% of our games. When he isn't our punter, we lose 100% of our games.
We gotta fire RAC for not healing Zastudil faster.

It's purely subjective, but I think that the only reason we were in this game is because of RAC.. I think the players played for HIM today...
But that's just my opinion..
And nobody on the planet can make a silk purse our of a sows ear.... so until we get that line fixed,, I don't think it's fair at all to blame it on RAC..
and I don't think it's fair to put it all on Granthum either....
Too many people on here are ready to place blame,,,, they want to win so badly that when we don't, it's gotta be someones fault,,
Sorry, but I ain't buying it at all...

It's funny, isn't it? We have a plan in place that is being followed. The last piece of the puzzle will be in the offseason when the DL is finally and really addressed (yes, some things have been done, but more band -aid than really addressing it). This has been mentioned since the off-season, but people get to caught up in the emotion of the season and forget all about the reality.

The defensive numbers are staggering. This is the third year with the same coaches on defense. We have drafted players and added free agents to play this scheme. Romeo brought the defense and the reputation as a defensive coach. The team has not shown improvement but has gotten worse.
We have not been able to stop the run - period. Tell me what adjustments were made at half? When a clearly one dimentional Oakland offense continued to run the ball down are throats. The results have been crystal clear. The answer can only be one of three factors. 1.) the defense is a bad scheme. 2.) the players are not good enough. 3.) the coaching is inadequate.
This team has zero chance to accomplish even a winning season unless changes are made. We have an offensive coordinator. The head coach and this defense needs to be blown-up. It would be different if we would be showing progress. We are getting worse. Unfortunantely a change is in order. You just can not hide from it.

Actually, I don't think there could have been much adjustments that would have made a difference. Our DL is not good. Yes, there have been bandaids put on it, but it hasn't truly been addressed. That will come in the offseason. The LB core we have is very solid, as is our DBs (of course injuries are a concern right now). The defense has been fine under RAC despite the lack of talent. In fact, considering the amount of time on the field, they've been performing very commendably until this season. I'm not going to freak out over 3 gaems this eyar and dismiss what has been done up til now.

What has been accomplished? We were close to last in defense when RAC came here. It is a given the talent was poor. There has been no improvement. Whatever coach, whatever manager of any business when you take over a job where you are ranked at the bottom you must show improvement.
There has to be accountability. We have an experienced defensive unit for the most part. No different than any other NFL team. Some veterans, some with 2 or 3 years, some rookies. With the cap and the draft all teams face the same challenge. This year the defense has to accept accountability. You can not hide behind the roster. Wait to address the DL etc. We have had no key injuries. The linebackers have experience. We are starting a rookie corner. He won the job. This team has been unable to stop the run. You can not when in our division or any other with the defense playing this way.
Something has to give. Romeo has not got the job done period.

Well, I for one, am gonna continue to blame Zastudil until he can prove that it's not all his fault because he didn't play.

It's really kinda sad Coach,,, No matter what happens,,, we win the game, someone wants RAC fired,, we lose a game someone wants RAC fired,.. RAC can't win no matter what with some people.. did you ever notice that some of these posters want to blame blame blame,,,, they don't even understand what they are blaming people for half the time,, I really hope that the Front office in Berea aren't as bad as some fans... In the last three weeks, if the Fans were in charge, we'd have fired the following coaches and cut the following players: RAC Granthum Chud Scherer Players Adams Anderson Frye Baxter Nat Dorsey Ken Dorsey Fraser Davis Lewis Wright, (jason) Wright, (eric) Pool Thompson Washington and from the front office Phil Savage Tell me something,,, are most of you glad that the patients aren't running this asylum? In the end, I'm with PPE,,, its all Zastudil.....

Actually, the defense has shown improvement throughout RAC's tenure. We haven't had significant injuries? Gary Baxter might disagree. We have 2 second year starters at LB, a new addition at LB, a rookie CB, an injured CB in Bodden, and an injured (and underperforming) Poole that is a first year starter. We do not have a solid DL. Putting a defense together takes time. It's game three for crying out loud.

You think Lovie Smith is going to be fired this week? Wonder about Herm Edwards? And of course Andy Ried and Tom Coughlin should be let go too. We should have a good pick of coaches later this week.

Browns miss out on this winnable game Monday, September 24, 2007 Terry Pluto Plain Dealer Columnist Oakland, Calif.- The Browns can talk about the blocked field goal, about the passive defense, about the missed changes on offense. But they still should have won this game. Oakland played like a team that had lost 11 in a row dating back to 2006, a team that was 15-51 since 2003. At the end of the game, Oakland was a team waiting for something to go wrong, waiting to lose - yet, the Browns couldn't come up with a single big play when it mattered.
Here's how bad it's been for Oakland - when it finally scored a TD in the second quarter, it was the Raiders' first TD in the first half in their past seven games. The fans were booing starting quarterback Josh McCown harshly. All the Browns had to do was score early, shut down the Raiders a few times, and they would have owned this game. But they were emotionally flat in the first half, except for the relentless Josh Cribbs and his 99-yard kickoff return for a TD.
It was disturbing to hear coach Romeo Crennel first talk about how poorly his team played, then add, "We tried to muster up some energy at the end." This should have been a game where passion flowed from the opening kickoff. The Browns were coming off a 51-45 victory over Cincinnati. They had a chance to win two in a row for the first time since 2003. Yet, they seemed like a team unprepared for the noise - guard Seth McKinney jumped offsides twice in the first quarter, and Eric Steinbach also was flagged for the same violation. They seemed confused a few times lining up and had to burn a timeout.
It's early in the season as the Browns are on their third offensive coordinator in three years. Derek Anderson also is the third starting quarterback in three years, and that was only his fifth NFL start. But this was a game where the Browns didn't need to be perfect, just solid.
Anderson was rattled early, he had two interceptions in the first half and also had a fumble that led to an 11-yard loss. That said, Anderson definitely should start next week against Baltimore. He showed more poise in the second half. He made some excellent throws to Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow for big gains. He was sacked only once, and does get rid of the ball quickly when pressured.
In the second half, Anderson was 11-of-21 passing for 173 yards. He did drive the Browns from their own 9-yard-line to the Oakland 22 in the final minute of play - without a timeout. Had he panicked in the second half, I would be thinking Brady Quinn for Baltimore. Not now.
Nearly every game, I think this, "Why don't they throw the ball more to Kellen Winslow and Joe Jurevicius?" They combined for nine catches, so it's not like they were ignored. But both have such good hands and a knack for making clutch catches, I love to see the ball going in their direction.
I also think, "Anderson is a rhythm quarterback who can get very hot. Why not go to the no-huddle a few times during the game, not just at the end of each half when losing."
But when it comes to the Browns' defense, I don't know what to think. At least, I have no new thought. They knew Oakland was going to run. They knew Oakland is not a good passing team. They knew what to expect, but seemed helpless against the run - and had some critical breakdowns in pass coverage.
When it comes to the Browns' defense, remember this: There is no Brady Quinn waiting for the right moment to play. No key players are hurt. The group on the field has to do the job. So far, only Kamerion Wimbley (two sacks, relentless hustle) has shown the ability to make big plays. That's not enough.
Obviously, the Browns are concerned about their inside linebackers, especially veteran Andra Davis, who has been bothered with minor injuries. Leon Williams is playing a lot for Davis, but he's not distinguishing himself. D'Qwell Jackson has just been fair. Chaun Thompson has had good moments, but he's been at outside linebacker - where Wimbley and Antwan Peek may be the team's two best defenders.

He's also dimmer than a penlight, and that's not the kind of guy you want running a no-huddle offense.
That's the kind of quote I'd expect to read from the average fan, not a respected journalist.

He also says "No key players are hurt.", ignoring that Bodden has a nagging groin injury and Pool has lingering effects of a concussion... and Wright had his psyche hurt, I think. And we may not be really "hurt", but I'll be damned if we didn't get our backs broke.
