Man, I had to work tonight. I went into a room and ate my lunch in there and turned on the TV, and that was in the middle of the bug mess, but before the Indians got on the board. I did get to see the final hit to win it.

Manny Ramirez just bombed one to win it.............

Anyways I did get to see the ending. Man, I wish I was home to watch that whole thing.

The more I listen the more I love it. I must admit, the female fans that call in are really really knowledgable fans. Most callers think it is over even with the Rocket going on Sunday. All callers think its done.

It's not over until it's over. You'd think Yankee fans would know that better than anyone.

Did anyone see the yankees player break his bat when he tapped it on the plate?

I went to cleveland.com to read the Plain Dealer Sports and got blocked by a HTTP403 (you are not authorized to view ...), so I'm wondering if they are trying to force readers to buy the paper today after last night's huge win? My paper's out in the driveway, but I'm a touch lazy this morning. So I go to the NY papers and they are all leading with the whole "bug thing" ... including bad puns, which is kind of a shame since it was a classic duel between two fine pitchers. Fausto reminded me of Bob Gibson or Don Drysdale; he was dealing some filthy stuff last night. It was a game for the ages, bugs or no bugs.

I can't get there either, cleveland.com is not responding to pings. Could just be down from too much traffic.

I checked out some New York sites too, seems it is the media that is pushing the bug thing. In the articles I read there are quotes from Yankee players taking the blame for the loss, not blaming the bugs.

Anytime you play an outdoor game you will be exposed to elements. Saying the Yankees lost because of the bugs is like a football team saying they lost just because it was snowing. Bugs are a rare circumstance, but anything can happen when playing outdoors

cleveland.com and ohio.com are both down. (front pages, anyway)

Edit: Now ohio.com is back up. The 1st 15 times I tried it I got an identical error to the one displayed by cleveland.com

On a side note ....... Go Tribe!!!!!!!!!!

What a game!!!!!!!

Going up 2-0 is huge for us. We just have to steal one in New York. They fought and fought. The Yanks got themselves out of several pitching holes too. Classic game, bugs or no bugs.

The whole time while I was seeing the game, I was thinking how much of a classic game this was. Then after a short bit of the bug swatting and seeing them cover more bugs than Tribe, I realize that what was good for our team was just turned into a 'river catching on fire'-type media joke.

Some people forget that there is a friggin Great lake attached to Cleveland.

Way to go Tribe...keep rolling!!!

nice quote by Andy in the NY times... glad he admited that both had to pitch with the bugs

“I’ve never seen anything like that,” Pettitte said. “It’s crazy. It’s a shame that had to happen in such a pressure-packed situation like that. Their guy had to deal with it, and he was still lights-out in the ninth inning. But that’s a shame.”

Great game, I'm just so mad I had to leave in the 10th inning

I love the Tribe highlights on ESPN.com. They show the Yanks pitcher freaking out with all of the bugs and then they cut to Carmona who just has complete concentration even though the bugs are everywhere around him too. Of course, they didn't point it out, but it was a great shot anyways.

Now I gotta work extra hard on Sunday so I'm home by 4:30 so I can catch the game. I really wish this was a night game so it would be early evening for me. Better think of ways to motivate my crew to get home quickly.

Speaking from a unbiased point of view.....it is a shame. What a time for a once of year swarm of Canadian Soldiers to swoop down on a rookie pitcher, in a pressure packed situation, making him look like a pale, well fed Ethiopian.

But I am biased....so....too bad.

But of course, thats what the national media wants you to think. But look at Carmona, they were all around him too and it didn't seem to bother him. It's just the amount of concentration you have........which leads me to my next point. I couldn't stop laughing at Jeter dodging them. He looked like he was scared the way he kept jumping.

Trust me...I was laughing my butt off last night.

The swarm of locusts that seem to have followed us the last 40 years may finally be tired of us and are looking for a new place to settle.

Maybe this was a sign from God??

Jeter looked effeminate dodging the bugs. The yanks fans are in an uproar. They feel the game should have been stopped because it could have resulted in ijnury to a player.

What really ticked me off last night is when The Yanks first baseman caught that smokin' line drive that Haffner hit and the announcers said what a great play and how he is one of the best in the game at the position..and than an inning or two later Garko makes an even better play that saved a run and an extra base hit and the announcers barely say anything about it.....

Listening to the radio show last night in NY, I guess there was a quote from Garko saying he played with Carmona in a Dominican winter league and bugs that were bigger than that were everywhere. He said they freaked him out, but Carmona was unfazed. So it's something Carmona has seen before. He just had the stronger concentration, and JCPP.

Torre not to blame for Yankees' loss
Ken Rosenthal

It was the greatest bugging since Watergate.

And, of course, Joe Torre is to blame.
Why didn't Torre prepare the Yankees for the Assault of the Gnats? Why didn't he bring better bug spray to Cleveland? Why didn't he order an air strike at Jacobs Field, knowing that owner George Steinbrenner gladly would have supplied fighter jets?

Laugh if you must, but if it's Torre who will be held responsible for the latest cataclysm in the weird, warped Yankees universe, then such questions — bizarre as they might sound — almost make sense.

One more loss to the insects — er, Indians — and the Yankees will suffer their third straight Division Series knockout. One more loss and Torre likely will be fired after making the playoffs in each of his 12 seasons as Yankees manager.

Perhaps a change would be appropriate, considering the Yankees are 3-12 in their past 15 postseason games and are transitioning to a new era. But remember, if not for Torre's steady hand, the Yankees probably would have not recovered from their 21-29 start to win the wild card.

The Yankees consider their season a success only if they win the World Series, a ridiculous standard if there ever was one. The postseason, as A's general manager Billy Beane once said, is a crapshoot — or in this case, a fly-for-all.

Indeed, the capricious nature of the Yankees' 2-1 loss to the Indians in 11 innings on Friday night underscores the folly of scapegoating this particular manager — or any manager unlucky enough to lose such a bizarre, magnificent game.

Torre: "Boss, I did everything I could."

Steinbrenner: "Joe, if I told you once, I told you a thousand times — you are responsible for pest control!"

Seriously, is it Torre's fault that Indians right-hander Fausto Carmona turned into a 21st-century Bob Gibson, overmatching the highest-scoring team in the majors?

Is it Torre's fault Yankees reliever Luis Vizcaino blinked in the 11th? That Alex Rodriguez, Jorge Posada and Hideki Matsui are a combined 0-for-20 with seven strikeouts? That the Yankees' offense has produced only eight hits while the Indians' 40-year-old Kenny Lofton has reached base seven times?

Finally, is it Torre's fault Game 2 turned on a sequence straight out of a horror movie, when rookie reliever Joba Chamberlain was swarmed by insects in the creepy-crawly eighth while trying to protect the Yankees' 1-0 lead?

OK, maybe Torre could have pleaded with the umpires for a bug delay, not that it would have worked. Maybe he could have inserted Mariano Rivera for Chamberlain, not that the insects would have scattered at the sight of a future Hall of Famer.

Managers plan for all sorts of contingencies, but this one arose, well, out of thin air.

Yankees trainer Gene Monahan sprayed Chamberlain's cap and jersey with insect repellent, to no avail. It was as if someone — Red Sox president Larry Lucchino perhaps? — had concocted a bizarre plague to afflict the Yankees. The bugs crawled on Chamberlain's neck and face, making it difficult for him to see.

The difference in his performance was striking. Chamberlain, after needing only five pitches to escape a one-out, two-on jam in the seventh, hit a batter, walked two and threw two wild pitches in the eighth. Grady Sizemore, after drawing a four-pitch leadoff walk, scored the tying run on the second wild pitch.

In 24 innings during the regular season, Chamberlain threw just one wild pitch and hit only one batter — and the latter, as the Red Sox's Kevin Youkilis would attest, probably was on purpose.

It was the bugs. It had to be the bugs.

Nothing else rattles the kid.

So now the series moves to Yankee Stadium, which for the first time could rate the edge in air quality. Roger Clemens, scheduled to pitch Game 3, might want to apply war paint, just as he did in the 1990 American League Championship Series. The Yankees, if they wish to save Torre, need to be prepared for anything and everything.

Never mind that the Yankees are on the verge of elimination in part because their homegrown pitchers are not yet as advanced as the Indians', and might never be as good.

In the weird, warped Yankees' universe, rest assured that "the bugs ate my reliever" will not be considered a sufficient excuse.

It's really irritating to see reporters like this and other members of the media making excuses for the Yankees instead of giving credit to the Indians where credit is due. Did Carmona have a swarm around him? Yes. Did he choke? No. Did the Tribe batters and outfielders have some kind of immunity to the bugs? No. But the Indians fought through it, remainded focused and prevailed.

The Yankees are a bunch of overpaid underacheivers. The Indians are a bunch of completely inexperienced guys who just stomped the Yankees to open the series, then pitched a 3 hit, 11 inning GEM in game 2. And this is what we get? I wish I could write to this guy and tell him that it's morons like him who make guys like me not want to read the National media anymore. They're completely biased when they write the articles and focus on what the majority want to hear, and not what should be heard.

I loved Garko's comments after the game (from the Canton Repository):

Quote:

But when Cleveland starter Fausto Carmona took the mound, he never stepped off the rubber. He was tougher than the gnats.

"I think that was my favorite part of the game," Garko said. "Fausto didn't step off the mound, because he's tough. That's what you've got to be here: Tough. Fausto didn't flinch.

"There were guys acting like those were bullets flying around their heads. They're not bullets. They're just bugs. This is the big leagues."

Wouldn't be too surprised if Clemens throws at Garko tomorrow. That's okay too ... it means we're in their heads.

Well in a way. Nixon was signed as a veteran leader and he has done a great job of showing these young kids what it takes to be a winner. The pie in the face thing is juts one of those things that caugh on because these guys all like each other. Nixon has battled all year, playing in serious pain , and has been a great role model for a young team. I hope when he retires he stays on as a coach.

No we don't. What we have to do is go into NY and take what we want. And that is to retire Clements and take this thing right away. At no time let NY think for 1 minute that they have a chance. So lets finish this off in 3.
