I mean there's an argument there but it is better left for another thread.

I agree with the argument but the context is ridiculous.

I have no problem w/you thinking it is hilarious. I don't think you get "why" I brought him up, but I know why. People pick and choose what to be outraged or offended by. That's where I got the crusade and hypocritical terms from.

I probably need to say this again. I have NO problem w/the Jim Brown statue being up in Cleveland. Statues aren't real. People are so easily offended. I read today that there is a petition to change Disney's Splash Mountain. GMAB!

Song of The South is a weird mishmash of Aesop's Fables that dresses up the "hey, slaves didn't hate being slaves...they truly were happy" narrative in an odd and twisted way. There's many reasons why Disney never released any Song of The South on VHS/DVD/BluRay/Digital.

Splash Mountain is based on the animal characters from Song of The South and the only direct reference to Song of The South is the use of Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah. I can take or leave a retheme of the ride. I get why people aren't happy with it.

This is all coming from a huge Disney Geek, too.

I just think it's totally lacking in context to the thread. I actually agree with you that Jim Brown is a POS human being and that removing his statue has a place for discussion. And yes, people do go overboard with things.

I guess I can get why some would want it removed, but I will say it again. I don't care about some dumb-ass statue or a ride at Disney.

We have a lot bigger things to deal with instead of inanimate objects. It's like some folks are looking for reasons to be offended. Their constant crying offends me. LOL

See, this once again leaves me wondering exactly what your comment is in reference to. Confederate monuments? Christopher Columbus statue?

The one I responded to initially was the Columbus one. Not asking you to agree, but I just think people are looking for reasons to be offended. Hell, we could find flaws w/just about everyone. I'm not into the "safe space" crap.

To a degree I agree with you. Some people do take things to an extreme. Yet at the same time I do find it odd how people perpetuate the theme that "Columbus dicovered America" when they rail against immigrants. wink

The fact that he killed and enslaved native people I do find pertinent to the conversation.

And the American government and military nearly wiped out the indigenous people of our now prospering country. We have exploited countries around the world. We locked up Japanese Americans as if they were a threat while doing nothing to German descendants. We treat Hispanics like dirt. We separate their families. We act like Muslims have a disease. We don't trust Arabic people. We faked crap w/Cuba for political reasons.

Should we remove all the statues of the people who were in charge or participated in those events? Should we ban our own symbol of an American Eagle because we have been so exploitative? Shall we burn all the books that promoted our history as humanitarians?

Pffttttt...........I despise hypocrisy and and selective bias. That is why I brought up Jim Brown, but it could have been one thousand other examples. I was a huge fan of Malcolm X back in the day. I read his autobiography. I think he wrote it w/Alex Haley. While I supported the guy, he did some incredibly vile things. Shall we tear down and destroy his memory because of those acts?

Maybe, people can stop being so freaking sensitive and worried about dumb-ass stuff that isn't going to solve any problems. I have NEVER been a fan of censorship. I remember fighting against that as a teacher. Schools went through a phase of banning books. I hate movements where popular opinion decides what we get to view or not.

I think we need to concentrate on solving the problems that we have in our present society and stop spending so much time listening to whiners who are offended over this or that. Intelligent and rational folks can look at a statue, a picture, a book, or any other form of art and make up their own mind if that the person or people being depicted were good, bad.......or perhaps both.

I will say this one more time for emphasis. I despise censorship.

I certainly think we should teach "real history" in schools an not the sugar coated propaganda we stuff down childrens throats. And since when did taking down statues in public places become censorship? That's just some made up myth in your mind.

In no way does that stop people from writing about it, having museums dedicated to it or learning about it in our schools. You just have your panties in a wad about it no less than the people you are railing against.

Yes, I would love to see monuments taken down. Why? Because a monument is something that's dedicated as a celebration. Something exalted as a symbol of reverence. Taking them down isn't "censorship" by any stretch of the imagination.

Nice strategy. No sense debating w/you since you insist on making things personal.

Yeah, that's all i said. But it's quite convenient of you to ignore the rest of it.
