If the Indians change their name I hope they change it to the Cleveland Foreskins in honor of all the Richard heads who want it changed. I coined that....thank-you. It took a day or so before my post was removed by Shep. LOL

What if we called ourselves The Tribe?
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

Maybe they should all just go by City. Figure out some separator for the cities with multiple teams.
While we're at it, have the league design a light and dark uniform. all teams where the same uniforms. 1 for home teams 1 for away teams.
Refs no longer wear black and white, and wear solid red shirts.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

I believe there was a five-tribe Iroquois governing structure called the Federation or something like that. Known to Franklin, and used some of its elements for our Constitution.
That would have to be honorable enough, I would hope. Sorry, some of the specifics were left in my textbook I used teaching when I retired. The bones are here correctly methinks. Or keep rotating tribal names and shedding them.
Is it out of the question just to call them the Wahoos?

It's sort of the same issue.
Indians takes the approach of lumping all Native Americans into one group. The word Tribe does the same.
Why not just reach out a to a local Native American organization and get their thoughts?
If they want Tribe, sure!
But for those of us on here who aren't Indigenous? Our opinions matter much as a zimbabwe trillion dollar bill (Peen excluded as he shared his background earlier in this thread or the other one). It shouldn't be about what we want rather it should be about what Native Americans want.

As always, people take things too far. Chief Wahoo was an embarrassment and so is the Redskins name. Indians? Eh........not so much.
It's like these idiots and statues. I watched a video of a crowd toppling a statue of Columbus and throwing him into the Baltimore harbor. Freaking animals.

Why not reach out to a local native american organization?
Because other local native american organizations would get upset and start the "why were THEY consulted, but WE weren't?" And we'd start all over. Again.
Just call them the Cleveland Eries. Eh, that might cause problems with other tribes.
Or the Cleveland Whiteskins. I don't think many would have a problem with that, do you? Eh, forgot. The natives americans, and maybe the blacks, would get upset that the team nickname had 'white' in it.
Gotta find something else. Maybe the Cleveland Nines.
But, once we get all these names changed, and all the statues down, it will all be alright, right?

From that BAD list of possibilities ... I’d go with “Blue Sox”
It would give us Red, White, and Blue Sox in the AL ... plus, it has some nice historical ties and would also be tied in with the rock and roll HOF (“Blues”)
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

j/c... We just need to scrap the whole Native American angle if we follow through with a name change. It's not worth it. Like Arch said, if we consult certain local tribes, it will be the wrong ones (in someone's eyes). I've wasted yet more time today trying to find out who exactly is upset... It's like everything else - one or two percent of those that matter are screaming their heads off and will continue to do so. The bottom line is that people will find a way to be offended no matter what. Defenders of the current usage often state their intention to honor Native Americans by referring to positive traits, such as fighting spirit and being strong, brave, stoic, dedicated, and proud; while opponents see these traits as being based upon stereotypes of Native Americans as savages.[8] In general, the social sciences recognize that all stereotypes, whether positive or negative, are harmful because they promote false or misleading associations between a group and an attribute, fostering a disrespectful relationship. Then I read something that even something as innocuous as "tribe" will encourage writers and media to use terms such as "warpath" and "scalped"... which will get the panties of four other people in a bunch. It's. Not. Worth. It. If you're changing the name, better make it an inanimate object or color or something. Even naming a team after an animal is bound to get someone upset. Heck, on the 4th I watched a dog owner get yelled at by someone trying to tell them they were going to get their paws burned by walking on the pavement. "No, j/a, my dog is pulling for the grass because he's smart enough not to poop on the pavement, get out of my face." was the response... Never waited around to see if the offended party called the police or spray painted some cars or anything... Be prepared - its only a matter of time: Definition of cavalier (Entry 1 of 2) 1: marked by or given to offhand and often disdainful (see DISDAIN entry 1) dismissal of important matters // a cavalier attitude toward money // has a cavalier disregard for the rights of others

I am going to say this again................I get that Redskins and the Chief Wahoo are out-of-bounds.
Indians, Chiefs, Braves, Blackhawks, Seminoles, etc? Hell no. I guess Indians is the worst of the lot because they weren't actually Indians, but who freaking cares?
I can tell you who cares, a bunch of whiny folks who have too much time on their hands and rejoice in causing controversy.
Like those despicable idiots who toppled the Columbus statue in Baltimore, or who chopped it's head off somewhere else, and so on and so on. You are animals. Get a freaking job and help make this country better by being productive. Your messages of hate are starting to make a lot of us angry. And when WE get to the point of retaliating to your hateful practices.............good freaking luck.

Do Native Americans have a monopoly on the word "Tribe" now? There have been many different tribes throughout the world and throughout history. Just remove any references to Indians (they already got rid of Chief Wahoo) and you're good to go.
If we're going to change a name everytime someone is offended, we're going to run out of names. Basically anything based on a human can be offensive, so all these are off the list:
Boston Celtics Notre Dame Fighting Irish Penn Quakers Minnesota Vikings Dallas Cowboys Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns USC Trojans MSU Spartans Pittsburgh Steelers (have you seen their mascot? Haha, j/k)
Those are just the most offensive, but any based on a group of humans is off-limit.
Can't choose any names based on animals, as that could offend PETA.
Like someone said, you have to stick with inanimate objects, but even those probably offend someone.
They'll probably try to get "Patriots" changed next. Just search Google for "patriot definition" and you'll see the following "similar" words: nationalist, loyalist, chauvinist, isolationist, xenophobe. Do you really want your team lumped in with that?

Tribalism could actually refer to any group of people, not just native people.

Tribalism could actually refer to any group of people, not just native people. In roughly the year 150 AD, Roman scholar Ptolemy identified the 9 tribes of Scotland once the Romans ventured in to northern Britain. That was long before we even knew there was a "New World". Anybody who wants to complain about this can shove it up their butt. Since we have already been calling the team the Tribe for a long while, go with that.

Make the Indians the candlestick makers, change the Cavs to the butchers, then we can have butchers, Bakers, and candlestick makers in Cleveland.
Meh, yeah, that was pretty bad.
The Cleveland Commodores? A nod to Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry and the Battle of Lake Erie, perhaps?

Changing the name to The Tribe allows the team and fans to basically keep all their icons. That includes Chief Wahoo. That is not acceptable. Therefore the name won’t be The Tribe.

I don't understand why this board is so adverse to letting minorities in our country have a seat at the table. Maybe one day this place can get over the whole "I don't like what you're saying even though you have a more authentic voice than me!" thing. I'm not holding my breath on it.
Does it really impact your fandom if Native Americans get a say in how they are honored by a team? Can a lot of you please just like step out of the way for once?
You have way bigger problems with yourself if you're finding outrage with Native Americans wanting a say over how they're represented. Rethink your life choices if this makes you angry.

I'm not aware of anyone that is outraged. I'm not aware of anyone that will quit being a fan.
I am aware that you are talking down to others that voice opinions that differ from yours, though.

The name change is inevitable.
That said, I'm coming around to the idea of the Blue Sox to match the Red, White, and Blue reference of the flag.
Antifa (or some other related group) will be PISSED.....which I wouldn't normally care about until they attempted to take down the Larry Doby statue having no clue what they were doing.

If he had any plans for re-election (which I think he has said no, already) that might have been his mayoral death sentence.
