I live in Tennessee and it is a different world.
At my local Kroger, which up until now did not require masks, over 50% of the people did not wear masks. Until of course the death count started increasing again and the cases of the virus spiked. Then a lot more people were wearing them.
It seems they have a problem grasping that not wearing them before cases and deaths went up is what caused that to happen.

So just a little taste of how the far right has treated me in the last week. I have been told I should just die and quit screwing up young folks lives. I have been told I should just move into my basement and stay there for 1 and 1/2 to 3 years until a vaccine is found. I have been told there is no cure for corona as none is needed since it is all made up. I have been told that I need my ass kicked since I don't agree that nobody needs to wear a mask or social distance. I was told by one guy that he knows all about corona since he has been a scientist for 18 years.. Turns out he has worked as a lab tech for the Cleveland Clinic for 17 months while teaching auto mechanics on the side, and was a mechanic for ten years prior to that. Was accused of slut shaming folks who won't wear masks and told how wrong I am for that yet also told by the same person I had no right to bring up that I could die with covid because of folks like him because he was so upset with being slut shamed. I have been dealing with the public for 37 years but today I have to admit they are getting more stupid, rude, and ignorant by the day  GM; sorry you have to go through that and yes the public is getting more stupid, rude and ignorant. I wanted to know-were these incidents in person, online social media like facebook or friends/family

Getting it from everywhere. That reflects on them though not you... I have made an effort for the once or twice a day I cruze social media to start purging the people who spend all day reflecting what an ignorant ass they are onto the internet. But still from family, my sister is planning on a graduation party for my nephew this Sunday in the basement of a 75 yr old church that the last time I went down there did not have conditioned air. I told her that me and my wife have been taking care of the in-laws as my mother in law just spent 3 weeks in the hospital, my dad was signed up with hospice last Thursday and my wife and daughter have pre-existing conditions that Covid plays on. My two sisters have put pictures almost continuously since Ohio re-opened, one they are at a gym, then out to eat, then a bar-never with a mask on. I just told her that we have been laying low- working at home, not going out to a bar or restaurant, wearing mask and distance. At first she was snarky, now they just seem to have put me on ignore. Oh well

They can’t tell the difference between opinion and just believing lies. I told them an opinion is, ‘I prefer vanilla over chocolate ice cream’. Not, ‘the alphabet ends in Y’. Once an uncle dug in his heals when called out on a post about Michelle Obama being a man... and he wasn’t going to change his ‘opinion’, “it’s not up for debate!!!!.”.. I came uncorked on him. He’s disgusting. He can’t debate because he stands on a foundation of lies and hate. Sadly many of my uncles and cousins follow that mindset. I’m done with them. On 9/11 there were 2997 Americans killed. The nation was brought together in mass to stand against a common enemy.
So far Covid 19 has killed well over 140,000 Americans and we still can't get people to wear a damned mask.
Is it because people can't see this enemy? Is it because people have lost all sense of reason? Is it because we've been receiving mixed messages from the government and the experts? Or is it a combination of all of the above?

In some small part it is all of the above but the primary reason we can't come together is because COVID isn't the enemy. Whoever you choose to blame for COVID and what's going on is the enemy. And I disagree that this has anything to do with defunding education. This is purely a cultural problem of hate, fear, division.. As far as personal stories go, I only have one person really close to me who is in total denial. He postponed his wedding once (postponed it to this coming weekend). He lives on the gulf coast of Florida and when the wife and I made the decision to not go, it was based on a few factors. One we saw Florida exploding at the time. Two he has taken no precautions for himself and his family. Three neither of us are excited about staying in a hotel for 4 nights. Four he and his wife were really married a few months ago and this is just the public ceremony so he has been out of the country on vacation for the last week and will have just gotten back. He has opted to ping my wife a few times for being "illogical" about it. So far he has sent her a Rand Paul article and a Bill Maher speech as supporting evidence why it is safe and we should go. I responded on her behalf and told him he has to do better than a retired politician who is a bit of a known conspiracy theorist and a comedian turned political talk show host. We have been out, had small gatherings with just a few friends at a time but only with friends that we know are being responsible, wearing masks, etc.

I tend to be in disagreement about your perspective of who or what the enemy is. For a few I believe that you're right. But overall I disagree with you.
There is overwhelming evidence that this originated in a market in Wuhan, China. Nobody really knew much about a new virus that had no studies or evidence with which to go on, including China.
Mistakes were made by everyone. China, the scientists and viral experts, politicians and everyone who had an actual voice. That's what happens when very little is known with which to base your opinions and advice on.
Of course there are those who wish to "assign blame". Something seems so horrible they must find someone or something to blame it on because it just "can't be that simple". So conspiracy theories and the blame game begins. Just look at the JFK assassination. It was, and still is for many, impossible to think that one man, working on his own, could assassinate the most protected man in America. That explanation is just too simple for people to believe. So they create an alternate reality.
The same has happened with Covid 19.
What everyone I seem to see does do however, is to blame what has happened as the actual evidence has come to light. How crazy claims of "We have 15 cases that will soon be down to zero", "It will just disappear.", "We will hold indoor rallies." and the like has been propagated. How experts have been dismissed and undermined when evidence has become apparent.
The cause of the virus and the fact that the virus is the enemy actually has few that dispute it. The way it has been handled and where the responsibility lies in the way it has been handled is where the vast majority of the blame is being disputed.

At first masking was spotty, but even before stores put up signs that masks as required, here in Chattanooga, I'd say 85% of people masked up. I walk. I even wear one there. I don't keep it up the whole time. You know what it is like around here, it is hotter than the dickens even at 6:30 AM. I'll pull it up if a I see people headed my way and there is no way to veer 3-4 feet in to the grass to give maybe 10 feet space. I obviously pull it up if I feel a sneeze or cough coming on, and also do so down under my tee-shirt.

It's spotty within communities. I drive to a Kroger 5 minutes away, and I see just about everyone wearing masks. It's a newer Kroger in a nicer area.
I drive 15-20 minutes away into a not-so-nice area. No masks... or shirts.

I will say that there are hateful folks on both sides of whatever issue there is. I don't think it's fair to say just this group is hateful or that group is hateful. Bro, I'm going to share this w/you because I think you are one of the good guys on here. We disagree on some things, but never seem to degrade one another [other than the color combination of orange and brown  ] I think we have a respectful relationship. This has troubled me for quite some time. We were both talking about getting the hateful people out of our lives. It's not that hard. You stop texting w/them, inviting them over, taking their calls, accepting their invitations, etc. You move on from them. But, this board? It's almost impossible. I like posting on here, but it's impossible to escape the ugly people. The hateful people. The ignorant people. They are up in our face all the time. I've tried to leave the board multiple times and I always come back. I have asked posters this question: "How about we stop responding to one another because all we do is fight and it clogs the board?" They won't agree to that. They lie, misrepresent comments, name-call, etc. For what? To win an argument on the board? The other day, a poster [who I will not name out of respect] messaged me and asked if it would be okay if we stopped fighting because it never gets us anywhere. I don't think I have the exact wording correct, but it was something like that. I replied: "Sure." I bring this up because I'm not going to fight w/a dude who doesn't want to. I don't believe in bullying or trying to destroy another person's character. I am not going to challenge that poster again, unless he jumps my ass again. LOL. But, he can say what he wants and I'll let it go. Conversely, I begged one poster over and over again to just follow this one request. I asked that he stop lying about what I said and/or misrepresenting my words in order to attack my character. He couldn't stop. I was not asking him to agree w/me. I was not asking him to give me a free pass. I just asked that he stopped w/false accusations that were intended to defile my character. Sadly, when you are a board like this one, you can't just be rid of the hateful souls like you can in everyday life.

I’m quitting my job today because NH still isn’t requiring masks. Workers are required to wear them but customers aren’t. I’m done with the deplorable people still not wearing them. I’ll just collect my SS until trump finds a way to take that from me as well.

I’ll just collect my SS until trump finds a way to take that from me as well. Doesn't the company have a policy. There is no mandate where I live, but other than going to a restaurant to eat, most every business down here are now mandating them for entry. Even restaurants recommend you wear them unless seated at your table.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

As I said, it's REQUIRED by the stores here, other than maybe some mom and pop's almost all the local chains and grocery stores require them. The only recommendation area is restaurants, as you can't wear a mask while eating, but it is recommended you bring one, and wear it when you get up from your table. But that is just here where I am at, I know Collier county, 1 county south of me has made masks mandatory anytime you go in public as of yesterday I think.

I will say I went to Kroger this morning. They now have a mandatory mask policy. Everyone was compliant and there were no "Karens" throwing a fit about it.

Who needs such willfully ignorant, hate filled, people in their lives? I don't. I do not associate w/those that are consumed by hate and ignorance. It's easy to do. I will say that there are hateful folks on both sides of whatever issue there is. I don't think it's fair to say just this group is hateful or that group is hateful. Bro, I'm going to share this w/you because I think you are one of the good guys on here. We disagree on some things, but never seem to degrade one another [other than the color combination of orange and brown ] I think we have a respectful relationship. This has troubled me for quite some time. We were both talking about getting the hateful people out of our lives. It's not that hard. You stop texting w/them, inviting them over, taking their calls, accepting their invitations, etc. You move on from them. But, this board? It's almost impossible. I like posting on here, but it's impossible to escape the ugly people. The hateful people. The ignorant people. They are up in our face all the time. I've tried to leave the board multiple times and I always come back. I have asked posters this question: "How about we stop responding to one another because all we do is fight and it clogs the board?" They won't agree to that. They lie, misrepresent comments, name-call, etc. For what? To win an argument on the board? The other day, a poster [who I will not name out of respect] messaged me and asked if it would be okay if we stopped fighting because it never gets us anywhere. I don't think I have the exact wording correct, but it was something like that. I replied: "Sure." I bring this up because I'm not going to fight w/a dude who doesn't want to. I don't believe in bullying or trying to destroy another person's character. I am not going to challenge that poster again, unless he jumps my ass again. LOL. But, he can say what he wants and I'll let it go. Conversely, I begged one poster over and over again to just follow this one request. I asked that he stop lying about what I said and/or misrepresenting my words in order to attack my character. He couldn't stop. I was not asking him to agree w/me. I was not asking him to give me a free pass. I just asked that he stopped w/false accusations that were intended to defile my character. Sadly, when you are a board like this one, you can't just be rid of the hateful souls like you can in everyday life. Over 1000 Americas died from Covid 19 yesterday alone. And somehow you think this message was important enough to derail a thread dedicated to discussing that. Someone's priorities are entirely out of whack. Borderline obsession. There are people you can see for that.
