Do we have any more information on what actually happened? Figured this would be widespread by now - I heard a report that the government had 2700 tonnes of ammonium nitrate had been seized and stored at that location for over 6 years... crazy I know. Nothing on how the blaze/explosion started, but that source of such a powerful explosion was that material. . . I was listening to the radio as reporters from the area were interviewed saying that all the glass in their neighborhoods had shattered, and they lived a mile from the location of the blast!!! Just wow. I did a little math and conversion to TNT equivalence to give this blast some scale. 1 unit of ammonium nitrate equals 0.42 units of TNT That 2700 tons of AN is 1,134 tons of TNT This was a 1.13 kiloton detonation. Hiroshima and Trinity were 20 kiloton detonations. The largest non-nuclear warhead in the US arsenal is the MOAB, which was used in Afhganistan to collapse mountain caves/tunnels. It's yield is a pittance at just merely 11 tons. As a further comparison, based on what I could find, McVeigh had about 3 or 4 tons of the same ammonium nitrate in OKC.. this was about 700 times that. It's almost hard to believe that the death toll is just over 200 so far.
