60% of Sturgis residents were against a motorcycle rally that brings in thousands but the city approved it. Here's why

Sturgis, South Dakota (CNN)Before deciding on whether to hold the 80th annual motorcycle rally in Sturgis, South Dakota, the local city council turned to its residents to get their take.

"There was a significant amount of discussion that the council had with residents, businesses and state health officials as well as local health officials," Daniel Ainslie, the city manager, told CNN Sunday.

The city, home to fewer than 7,000, sent a survey to all households asking if they wanted the rally to proceed on its scheduled date. The massive event usually brings in crowds of about 500,000 over 10 days of drag races, contests and concerts. On its 75th anniversary, nearly three quarters of a million people showed.

A little more than 60% of people in the city voted against holding the event this week. But the city council approved it anyway.

The decision, Ainslie says, was all about being able to prepare for the crowds.

"There are people throughout America who have been locked up for months and months," he said. "So we kept hearing from people saying it doesn't matter, they are coming to Sturgis. So with that, ultimately the council decided that it was really vital for the community to be prepared for the additional people that we're going to end up having."

The crowds began pouring in last week and are expected to come from all corners of the country -- many arriving from coronavirus hotspots like Florida, Texas and other parts of the US that have seen a rise in cases in recent weeks. South Dakota has reported about 9,605 cases. In Meade County, where Sturgis is located, there have been about 94 reported infections.

The revving of motorcycle engines cut through the mountain air in Sturgis Monday morning, the fourth day of the event. Tents lined Lazelle Street, a main thoroughfare, selling biker gear, Trump apparel and food, as pedestrians packed the sidewalks, and motorcycles crowded the streets.

"What's important for people to understand is in a very small community and rural western South Dakota, you cannot have tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of people come without preparations, including garbage and sanitation and additional law enforcement and emergency medical personnel," he said.

"That was really the thing that drove the council to decide that we had to be prepared for the number of people that came."

Gary and Cia Miller told CNN they drove three days on a motorcycle from California to attend this year.

"I'm not worried about it at all -- we're from California where you gotta wear masks everywhere you go," Gary Miller said. "So it's honestly refreshing coming out and not having to worry about it."

Covid has people cooped up at home and they're here ready to have fun, Casey Kelley, from Denver, told CNN.
The events held in the city will be limited this year, city officials told CNN, and many that usually drew crowds have been canceled.

In addition, the city canceled advertising for the days-long event and "tried to downplay the rally as much as possible," Ainslie said.

"We're telling people when they come here, go on rides throughout the hills, because when you're on your motorcycle driving through the hills, you're absolutely socially distant."

'Super spreader events are real'

The rally has always been a point of contention among the city's residents but this year there's an added concern: a powerful virus that's still running unabated across many US communities.

"I don't think people have a clue how bad it really is," Janet Sechser, a resident, said. "It's shoulder-to-shoulder people in and out the bars. Definitely not anything as far as social distancing. There's no masks or anything like that."

Some experts fear the event -- and the afterhours gatherings in restaurants and bars that have no legally enforced capacity limits -- could lead to a spread of coronavirus not just in the South Dakota community but other parts of the country as tourists return home.

"Those super spreader events are real," said Dr. Megan Ranney, an emergency physician at Lifespan Health System and associate professor at Brown University.

"We have reports from across the country of one person infecting 90 or 100 (people) or even more. And so if you have a few of those infections that start at Sturgis, people go back home and even have the potential to spread in their own communities."

And that, she said, may be happening without people knowing, as symptoms can take anywhere between several days to two weeks to show up.

"This has the potential to seed new hotspots literally across the country," she said.

The positive thing, Ranney added, is that many events will be taking place outside. But not all of them.

"Those bars and those afterhours events are what do make me and other public health officials quite nervous."

A quarter million people in an tiny town, most with no masks... what could go wrong? One couple was asked why they wanted to be there and they said they were tired of all the covid stuff and just want to have some fun... idiots.

There are no violent protester mobs. And you have a koolaid mustache.

BTW - Are you seriously comparing 250k partying bikers wanting to "have some fun" by holding breast fest Sturgis 2020 to people exercising their constitutional rights by protesting for blacks being killed in the streets? You are shameless.

I don't know if the motorcycle gangs are causing trouble or not in Sturgis. If so, they need to be arrested.

The reality is most are clubs. Hell's Angles and some others, no doubt, gangs. See, I don't have a problem saying that.

I want to thank trump for making us the crap hole country that nobody wants to deal with.

EU, Canada, Mexico, and others still have us banned from coming in.

I hope this country is proud of ourselves. Our response to this virus -from the very top of our leadership to the everyday American - has been a complete disaster.

We even found a way to make wearing a freaking mask a left or right issue. American culture is nothing short of toxic. Anytime there’s injustice or terror in the world, the US needs to keep its mouth shut. We have no moral authority or credibility to speak on anything.

The way the rest of the world views and talks about us....so embarrassing. This country is just a running joke now, A circus led by an orange clown.

Running scared: Cuomo pulls out all stops to avoid responsibility on NY's massive COVID nursing home death count

By Monica Showalter

Andrew Cuomo's got a load of nerve.

Imagine being one of the relatives of the thousands of elderly nursing home residents who died as a result of their residences becoming sealed incubators for COVID, which Andrew Cuomo literally ordered. These people were banned from visits from their own families for their own "safety," they said. Yet it was Potemkin stuff; they had no protection from COVID, as they had to breathe the air of coughing, infected patients all around them, with absolutely no way to get away from it. Once they got it, they died alone.

It's the biggest scandal of the COVID era.

Cuomo's policy killed at least 6,000 nursing home patients, with a new report out today that the number looks grotesquely undercounted. According to today's Associated Press:

NEW YORK (AP) — New York's coronavirus death toll in nursing homes, already among the highest in the nation, could actually be a significant undercount.

Unlike every other state with major outbreaks, New York only counts residents who died on nursing home property and not those who died in hospitals.

That statistic could add thousands to the state's official care home death toll of just over 6,600.

But the administration of Gov. Andrew Cuomo has so far refused to divulge the figure, leading to speculation New York is manipulating the figures to make it appear it is doing better than other states.

Yet here we have it, Cuomo saying he won't allow an independent investigation as to why he ordered this on March 25.

"I think you'd have to be blind to think it's not political," he said. "Just look at where it comes from and look at the sources and look at their political affiliation."

This is absolute rubbish — the New York Post reports that legislators from all parties are demanding it. And they do deserve answers.

Why was Cuomo so adamant that nursing homes be forced to take COVID patients even as President Trump provided a huge naval ship as a hospital for just this purpose? Why did Cuomo ignored the cries of the nursing home directors at the edict, warning of disaster? Why did he forbid nursing homes from testing incoming patients of COVID after they had just been discharged from hospitals from COVID (bringing body bags for the future dead with them)? What did he stand to gain from this positively Hitlerian policy of instant death sentences on old people?

Anyone with a brain is going to want to know why.

Yet Cuomo's resistance is appalling. And he's pulling out all stops. According to today's Daily Caller, Cuomo's minions "disinvited" a Fox News meteorologist, Janice Dean, from a briefing apparently after learning that she had lost her parents-in-law to COVID as a result of this policy and had posted angry tweets about it, blaming him. Poof! Canceled.

It all boils down to a Democrat who's running scared, who's doing all he can to avoid responsibility for his horrendous moves, effectively censoring he press and stonewalling the public's right to know. Obviously, Cuomo's got bigger ambitions. One can only hope the public steps up pressure for an explanation, which he is trying to hide.

Janice Dean slams Cuomo nursing home policy after losing in-laws to COVID-19: 'Not just numbers on a curve'

By Yael Halon | Fox News

Janice Dean's in-laws both died from coronavirus in New York nursing homes

New York has the country's highest coronavirus death toll, thanks in part to a government policy requiring nursing homes to admit patients who tested positive for coronavirus.

Fox News senior meteorologist Janice Dean told "Tucker Carlson Tonight" Thursday that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's failed nursing home policy should be "one of the biggest" stories of the year after both of her parents-in-law lost their lives to the coronavirus.

"I have not seen the coverage of this ... ," an emotional Dean said. "Twenty percent of our lost loved ones are from nursing homes ... because Governor Cuomo and several other governors forced COVID-recovering patients into nursing homes."

"These people are real people. They are not just numbers on a curve."
— Janice Dean, Fox News

Dean, who rarely comments on political issues, felt compelled to speak out after watching a CNN interview in which anchor Chris Cuomo -- the governor's younger brother -- failed to address the growing controversy and instead performed prop comedy with giant cotton swabs.

CUOMO BROTHERS' JOKEY CNN INTERVIEW FAKES BACKLASH

"The fact that I am seeing, last night, him ... making fun, inappropriate jokes and insensitive jokes, cruel jokes ... make no mistake," Dean said, "I am glad that Chris Cuomo has recovered from COVID because he apparently did have it. And I'm glad that their family is well, but my family is not well. And that is not something to joke about."

Cuomo has been roundly criticized over New York's initial policy that required nursing homes to accept COVID-19 hospital patients who had been discharged from hospitals. On May 10, New York reversed the policy amid criticism and the mounting death toll.

Officially, 5,876 residents of New York state nursing homes or assisted living facilities have died of COVID-19 as of Thursday. However, the state health department count does not include residents who died "outside the facility," such as at a hospital.

Dean said that very fate befell her mother-in-law.

"His [Sean's ] mom ... was rushed to the hospital, died in the hospital and her number will not be counted as a nursing home or assisted living home [death] because of the governor's policy of saying that she died in the hospital, even though it was confirmed COVID," Dean said.

Dean added that her father-in-law was transferred to what she believes was a floor with COVID-19 patients days before he succumbed to the virus.

CUOMO SAYS ‘NOBODY’ SHOULD BE PROSECUTED OVER CORONAVIRUS DEATHS AMID CRITICISM OVER NURSING HOME POLICY

Sean's dad "was a New York City firefighter and was in the U.S. Air Force," said Dean. "These people are real people. They are not just numbers on a curve."

Highlighting the plight of so many who have lost ones to the pandemic, Dean said it was difficult not to honor the memory of her children's grandparents with a funeral, and that her family is taking the loss "day by day."

"We weren't able to have a funeral for them or celebrate their life properly. That was very difficult from the normal way that people would mourn. We didn't have that."

The Outrageous Reason NY Dems Stopped Janice Dean from Testifying at Monday's Nursing Home Hearing

Cortney O'Brien
|
@obrienc2

Posted: Aug 11, 2020

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's controversial nursing home policy that forced facilities to accept COVID patients went into effect on March 25 and continued for 46 days. But he insists it has nothing to do with the 6,000 senior care fatalities that the state has tallied since the start of the coronavirus outbreak. The number may actually be much higher. (More on that later).

Fox News meteorologist Janice Dean, one of many New Yorkers who lost loved ones in nursing homes, was prepared to testify about how Cuomo's mandate led to her in-laws' deaths. But at the last minute, her name had been taken off of the witness list.

What happened to the invitation, Fox News radio host Brian Kilmeade wondered.

"It got lost, I suppose," Dean replied.

Dean said she had filled out all the paperwork and sent her formal request letter to all the lawmakers at the end of July. They told her she'd have a time to testify on Monday, August 10. Several emails confirmed it. And yet, when the time came, she was bumped.

"I can only guess," she said. "I think it went higher than the chairman. I think that it was Andrew Cuomo or his admin that decided they didn't want my voice to be heard. And that's really unfortunate."

"It's just another indication that they don't want a real investigation," she concluded. "This is a complete sham."

Gov. Cuomo has more often than not tried to defer the blame during this pandemic. But according to Dean, "Here in New York, it's on Gov. Cuomo."

Townhall asked Dean if she'd heard back from any Democrats on the panel. All they managed to send her was a generic email about not being able to accommodate her request because of "the very large volume of requests received and limited amount of time."

They "encouraged" her to tune in to the live broadcast.

Later, Dean learned some interesting details about her "lost" invitation. Apparently, Senate Democrats were too "uncomfortable" having her in a witness chair.

The Senate Majority later sent a statement to Fox News, insisting that "every victim should have their story heard and it's deeply troubling that she wasn't given the opportunity to provide testimony at today's hearing."

The New York Senate GOP excoriated their counterparts for refusing to let her speak.

"Fox & Friends" gave Dean the chance to share part of her testimony on Tuesday morning. She spoke warmly of her late in-laws, Mickey and Dee Newman, who she called the epitome of "New York Tough."

“I just wanted to tell my story," she said, fighting back tears. "I wasn’t – I don’t want to be in this position. I’m not a political person but if I can be the voice for the families that have lost loved ones and I have made one difference for one family, then it was all worthwhile.”

As it turns out, the Cuomo administration may be hiding the actual number of COVID-19 related nursing home deaths. As the Associated Press reported, the number they provided - 6.000 fatalities - could be "a major undercount" because it only counts residents who died on nursing home property, not those who died after being transported to hospitals.

And no, Dean didn't take the Democrats advice and tune in to Monday's hearing. She maintained that these hearings won't produce any substance until they bring in witnesses by subpoena.

Why should the deaths of Covid patients admitted into hospitals be considered as Covid patient deaths in nursing homes? And besides Cuomo also laid down guidelines if the nursing homes physically can’t take care of Covid patients in their facilities they won’t be forced to admit them. Ultimately it was the nursing home’s decision.

Cuomo has New York down to being the best state in the union in terms of conditions in controlling the virus and it's making their heads explode. wink

Trump keeps advocating people conduct themselves in a manner that that keeps killing people and they can't man up and admit it. If it weren't so sad it would be hilarious.

America's flying blind on its coronavirus response

A month after the Trump administration changed how hospital data is reported, the public release of this data "has slowed to a crawl," the Wall Street Journal reports.

The big picture: This is the latest example of how the world's wealthiest country just can't get it together.

Testing and case data — which tell the story of where people are getting sick — have been a problem for the last six months. This latest fiasco blurs the picture of how many people are getting very sick at a given time, which until now has been a more reliable measure of the pandemic.

Driving the news: The Department of Health and Human Services last month ordered states to report coronavirus hospitalization data directly to the agency, rather than to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as they'd been doing.

Now, important data, like the number of beds occupied by coronavirus patients, is lagging by a week or more.
The implications go beyond tracking the virus. Hospitalization data is also used by agencies to determine where to send remdesivir and personal protective equipment.
What they're saying: “The transition has been a disaster,” Jeffrey Engel, senior adviser to the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists, told the WSJ. “What HHS said was that the CDC was not nimble enough and couldn’t handle new data elements, and that’s simply not true.”

The other side: HHS officials told the WSJ that the new system has a more complete set of data, but that the quality-control process has led to some delays as the new system gets up and running.

The bottom line: We're doing a terrible job handling the pandemic, at least relative to other wealthy countries. The fact that we don't have a good idea of what's happening in real time – and it's getting worse — is one of the major contributors to that failure.

The same Cuomo who sent COVID19 patients to nursing homes and killed thousands of elderly people? "that Cuomo"?

Your kidding right?

Yes that Cuomo. New York is currently in better shape controlling the virus than any state in our country. Some people learn and make progress as new information comes in. Some people don't.

‘This is no longer a debate’: Florida sheriff bans deputies, visitors from wearing masks

On Tuesday, as Florida set a daily record for covid-19 deaths, Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods prohibited his deputies from wearing masks at work. His order, which also applies to visitors to the sheriff’s office, carves out an exception for officers in some locations, including hospitals, and when dealing with people who are high-risk or suspected of having the novel coronavirus.

In an email to the sheriff’s department shared with The Washington Post, Woods disputed the idea that masks are a consensus approach to battling the pandemic.

“We can debate and argue all day of why and why not. The fact is, the amount of professionals that give the reason why we should, I can find the exact same amount of professionals that say why we shouldn’t,” Woods wrote in the email, which was first reported by the Ocala Star-Banner.

A majority of epidemiologists and other health experts say face masks and social distancing are key to slowing the spread of the novel coronavirus, which has ravaged Florida. The state, which has recorded more than 542,000 cases and more than 8,600 deaths, added 277 more deaths on Tuesday; Marion County also set a record for daily deaths on Tuesday, with 13.

Police nationwide have faced scrutiny over inconsistent use of masks by officers, even in large cities like New York and Philadelphia where face coverings are mandatory. Many large departments only suggest officers wear masks, ABC News recently found, while those that require them, including the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, make exceptions for incidents where masks might impede officers in the line of duty.

Woods is among the first law enforcement officials to outright ban masks for his deputies, though.

He issued the order as Marion County and its largest city, Ocala, are mired in a politically charged debate over a mandatory mask rule. The Ocala City Council passed an emergency mask order last week, but Mayor Kent Guinn (R) vetoed it, citing in part a refusal by Ocala Police Chief Greg Graham to enforce the rule.

“My chief and I have talked about it. We will never write a fine. We’re just not going to do it,” Guinn told the Sky 97.3 FM on Monday.

The city council plans to meet Wednesday to consider overriding the veto, the Star-Banner reported.

Woods, meanwhile, told his deputies on Tuesday to stop wearing masks in most cases. While officers can still mask up in areas including the courthouse and county jail, they must immediately take off the face coverings afterward. Deputies working special events are also forbidden from wearing masks, Woods said.

All visitors to sheriff’s department buildings will be asked to take off their masks in the lobby, Woods said, linking that rule to the ongoing protests against police brutality.

“In light of the current events when it comes to the sentiment and/or hatred toward law enforcement in our country today, this is being done to ensure there is clear communication and for identification purposes of any individual walking into a lobby,” he wrote.

The sheriff argued working mask-free hasn’t led to a spike of infections in his 900-person department. “Since the beginning of this pandemic the operation of this office has not changed and no wearing of masks has been put in place,” he said.

But as the Star-Banner reported, the local jail has seen a serious spike, with at least 200 inmates testing positive, along with 36 jail employees, including officers. A nurse at the jail has also died of covid-19.

Should anyone challenge a deputy about wearing a mask, Woods wrote, “politely and professionally tell them I am not required to wear a mask nor will I, per the Order of the Sheriff.”

Woods, who participated in a phone conference with President Trump and other sheriffs on Tuesday, ended his missive by making it clear that he would brook no dissent.

“This is no longer a debate nor is it up for discussion,” he wrote. “Please keep in mind this entire pandemic is fluid and constantly changing the way things are done. However, my orders will be followed or my actions will be swift to address.”

Well, the south is most certainly rising again...
