August 11, 2020 Running scared: Cuomo pulls out all stops to avoid responsibility on NY's massive COVID nursing home death count By Monica Showalter Andrew Cuomo's got a load of nerve. Imagine being one of the relatives of the thousands of elderly nursing home residents who died as a result of their residences becoming sealed incubators for COVID, which Andrew Cuomo literally ordered. These people were banned from visits from their own families for their own "safety," they said. Yet it was Potemkin stuff; they had no protection from COVID, as they had to breathe the air of coughing, infected patients all around them, with absolutely no way to get away from it. Once they got it, they died alone. It's the biggest scandal of the COVID era. Cuomo's policy killed at least 6,000 nursing home patients, with a new report out today that the number looks grotesquely undercounted. According to today's Associated Press: NEW YORK (AP) — New York's coronavirus death toll in nursing homes, already among the highest in the nation, could actually be a significant undercount. Unlike every other state with major outbreaks, New York only counts residents who died on nursing home property and not those who died in hospitals. That statistic could add thousands to the state's official care home death toll of just over 6,600. But the administration of Gov. Andrew Cuomo has so far refused to divulge the figure, leading to speculation New York is manipulating the figures to make it appear it is doing better than other states. Yet here we have it, Cuomo saying he won't allow an independent investigation as to why he ordered this on March 25. "I think you'd have to be blind to think it's not political," he said. "Just look at where it comes from and look at the sources and look at their political affiliation." This is absolute rubbish — the New York Post reports that legislators from all parties are demanding it. And they do deserve answers. Why was Cuomo so adamant that nursing homes be forced to take COVID patients even as President Trump provided a huge naval ship as a hospital for just this purpose? Why did Cuomo ignored the cries of the nursing home directors at the edict, warning of disaster? Why did he forbid nursing homes from testing incoming patients of COVID after they had just been discharged from hospitals from COVID (bringing body bags for the future dead with them)? What did he stand to gain from this positively Hitlerian policy of instant death sentences on old people? Anyone with a brain is going to want to know why. Yet Cuomo's resistance is appalling. And he's pulling out all stops. According to today's Daily Caller, Cuomo's minions "disinvited" a Fox News meteorologist, Janice Dean, from a briefing apparently after learning that she had lost her parents-in-law to COVID as a result of this policy and had posted angry tweets about it, blaming him. Poof! Canceled. It all boils down to a Democrat who's running scared, who's doing all he can to avoid responsibility for his horrendous moves, effectively censoring he press and stonewalling the public's right to know. Obviously, Cuomo's got bigger ambitions. One can only hope the public steps up pressure for an explanation, which he is trying to hide. https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/202...eath_count.html Columnist warns Cuomo 'will have to answer for what he did' by making nursing homes take COVID patients'New York has suffered the brunt of coronavirus deaths ... yet the governor is treated like some kind of conquering hero' New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo continues to be treated as a "conquering hero" despite shirking any responsibility for state nursing home deaths from coronavirus, even after a new report details how the official totals are "outright wrong," according to New York Post columnist Karol Markowicz. Writing for The Spectator US, Markowicz noted that the Associated Press reported this week that "New York only counts residents who died on nursing home property and not those who were transported to hospitals and died there."

Trump mishandled this from jump calling it a hoax, telling people it would go away and now forcing kids back to school when anybody with a brain knows that IS GOING TO KILL KIDS! While he says children are a small percentage of deaths... So you're damn right GM I put 100% of the deaths on Trump and the GOP for their lack of leadership and udder ridiculousness in handling this pandemic. Trump didn't cause the virus, but he sure didn't help get it under control either with all this knee jerk reactions, false misleading info, and general BS that GOPers pull in handling it.

Lord knows I am not a Trump fan, but ...and there it is again! Pfff trump supporters 1500 deaths just yesterday. 1500! trump virus And trump deaths....no leadership whatsoever. No financial assistance to states, executive orders states can’t meet, and demanding schools to open. And he still hasn’t mandated masks! He’s a total failure! And his actions are literally killing US citizens when he pledged to an oath on the Bible to protect US. He’s a lying murderer. And his supporters are letting him off the hook. Silence is complicit. I’m not a trump fan but..... it’s so telling

Senate leaves until September without coronavirus relief dealThe Senate left Washington, D.C., on Thursday until September — the latest sign that a deal on a fifth coronavirus relief package is, at least, weeks away. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) had kept the chamber in session this week, which was technically the first in its August recess, as a last-ditch attempt to create space for the administration and congressional Democrats to get an agreement. But with talks stalemated, senators argue there is little reason for them to keep holding daily, roughly 1 1/2-hour sessions. The House already left town and isn't expected to return until Sept. 14. “We will have our regular pro forma meetings through the end of the state work period. If the Speaker of the House and the minority leader of the Senate decide to finally let another package move forward … it would take bipartisan consent to meet for legislative business sooner than scheduled,” McConnell said as he wrapped up the Senate until next month. McConnell added that he hoped the Senate would be able to “act sometime soon.” Senators will get at least 24 hours notice to return if congressional Democrats, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House chief of staff Mark Meadows are able to break the impasse and votes are scheduled. Otherwise, the Senate will formally reconvene on Sept. 8. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) predicted during a conference call on Tuesday that if negotiators didn't restart by Thursday, the administration's executive orders would be the only action that takes place until early September. “If it doesn’t happen in the next 48 hours, I think this is all you’re going to see until Congress gets back into session after Labor Day," Grassley told reporters. There's little reason to think a deal will be reached before then. The four key negotiators have not met in person since Friday, when the talks officially collapsed. And the only contact to take place this week — Mnuchin calling House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Wednesday — resulted in dueling statements that only illustrated how stalemated the negotiations on coronavirus relief have become. Democrats in the House approved a relief package of over $3 trillion, and offered to come down to $2 trillion. Republicans and the White House have refused to move from $1 trillion. "We are miles apart in our values," Pelosi told reporters on Thursday. "Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gave a damn. That isn't the case. This is very far apart." Asked when her next talk would be with Mnuchin and Meadows, Pelosi responded, "I don't know. When they come in with $2 trillion." White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow, speaking to reporters on Thursday, said the talks are at a "stalemate." "As Secretary Mnuchin said yesterday, the Speaker wants a $2 trillion commitment from us. We're not going to give it. There are too many things, too many asks on their side that don't fit, don't have anything to do with COVID, for that matter," he said. Beyond a top-line figure, the two sides haven’t resolved how much weekly unemployment benefits would be, how much money to give state and local governments or how to address McConnell’s red line of liability protections for businesses that open back up. School funding, both the amount and how it's divided up, remains a sticking point as well. The inaction comes as the unemployment rate is at 10.2 percent, down from a peak of 14.7 percent in April but still slightly higher than the peak during the Great Recession. And the country continues to report tens of thousands of new coronavirus cases per day, including reporting nearly 1,500 coronavirus deaths on Wednesday in what is the highest number of daily deaths since mid-May. Mnuchin and Meadows have been providing daily updates to Senate Republicans, but senators have said there is little reason to think a detente between congressional Democrats and the administration is on the horizon. “Basically, not much new movement,” said Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) after a call this week. The stalemate is taking place less than three months before the November election, injecting more politics into the dynamic compared to the four previous coronavirus relief bills that passed the Senate with either no opposition or only a handful of “no” votes. Vulnerable incumbents in both parties have sent warning signals this week to leadership that they need to cut a deal. Rep. Max Rose (N.Y.), a freshman Democrat in a district President Trump won in 2016, told CNN that "I share the concerns that I'm hearing from my constituents: I'm pissed. I'm angry. ... At this point, it's a middle finger to the American people." Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) — who faces a tough reelection bid as one of two GOP senators running in a state won by 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton — said on Thursday that she thought the Senate should reconvene next week to try to work on an agreement and force members to vote on coronavirus relief proposals. “Have people step up to the plate,” she told the Sun Journal. But even though the Senate has been in session the week, the Capitol has largely slid into its normal summer routine with only a handful of senators spotted around the chamber. Instead, the brief sessions have largely been used for senators to trade blame over the inability to get a deal, providing a daily look at how far apart the two sides are. McConnell on Thursday accused Democrats of holding an agreement “hostage” and “barely even pretending to negotiate,” while warning that voters were watching. “By now the whole country knows what I’m talking about, the absurd issues which the Democrats have turned into sticking points,” he said. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) shrugged off the comments, noting the GOP leader is facing his own headache with, by McConnell’s own estimate, up to 20 senators prepared to vote against any deal. The GOP divisions captured the political spotlight for weeks, and undermined the negotiating hand for Meadows and Mnuchin. “He's gotta say something,” Kaine said. “And, you know, I think he's done what he can do with the Senate GOP. When he candidly acknowledged, ‘look, there's gonna be at least 20 members of Congress who won't vote for a single dollar’s worth of aid,’ he basically at that point is saying, ‘Dems, you gotta work it out with the White House.’” https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/5118...rus-relief-dealBoth houses... incredible. Both will be to blame when the recession becomes a depression.

Man....today we’re gonna reach a real ugly milestone with Rona.
Probably gonna touch 170k deaths today. That’s.....I think about smaller towns around the US.
Towns/cities that have 30-80k people there. And now those would be the equivalent of ghost towns. Just....empty.
What a year.....

Had a similar thought process.
Plus - Americans killed 9/11 - 2,605
I still hear people saying it's no worse than the flu. It's a hoax etc. Still see people in shops that mandate masks not wearing them or having them pulled down under their mouths.

I think back to all of the rationing during WW2. How people bought bonds to further the war effort. The sacrifices they made. Now we can't even get people to wear a damn mask and social distance. It's sad and disgusting all at the same time.

It's odd that Trump supporter currently wants to Rip Cuomo because he made mistakes and say "he's killed thousands" but they deny Trump is responsible for making everything worse and his hands are clean.

1 million Americans that the scientists said would die are still living and laughing at your post. From which prediction? I believe those generally were the predicted numbers if we did "no lockdown" -- and then we did (mostly) do a lockdown? Seems like a pretty good prediction to me. Of course - there were many many predictions made by a lot of people -- some are bound to be bad (if they weren't, it would be suspicious).

1 million Americans that the scientists said would die are still living and laughing at your post. A bit nauseating that you would try to be glib after 170,000 Americans have died and are still dying in such high numbers each week. I remember when people were scoffing at the predictions that there would be 200,000 deaths after we locked everything down.... And in case you have a hard time with context and comprehension - I'll help you understand statements from agencies when they use disclaimers such as were used for the initial estimates you quoted.

Rather than tell people it's just going to go away? You might wish to look at the places who have mandated it and enforced it. See how they're doing rather than places like Florida and Texas.

Not to make light, but it is easy to blame Covid. Many of the people who have passed very well could have had they caught a common cold. I am just saying I don't think it is as bad as the numbers reflect. People age 65 and up represent nearly 80% of the deaths. No doubt this is a bad ass but it really hits people with low immunity. I don't know many people over 65 who don't have some condition that lowers their immune system. Just a function of age. Again, not trying to minimize anything. I am over 65, so I could have the bullseye on my back. Just trying to put some perspective on this.

You can determine whether it is just "people who were going to die anyway" by looking at the statistics of excess deaths: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/08/12/us/covid-deaths-us.htmlCompared to an average year: 200,000 more people have died already (more than the number of official Covid deaths).

https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/17/politics/...rump/index.htmlWoman who lost father to Covid-19: 'His only preexisting condition was trusting Donald Trump' Washington (CNN)A woman who lost her father to the coronavirus excoriated the President on the first night of the Democratic National Convention, declaring in a pointed speech that her father's "only preexisting condition was trusting Donald Trump." Kristin Urquiza, whose father Mark Urquiza died from the virus in June, said in a video message Monday night that he "paid with his life" by trusting the President's repeated insistence that the pandemic would go away. "The coronavirus has made clear that there are two Americas: the America that Donald Trump lives in and the America that my father died in," she said. "Enough is enough. Donald Trump may not have caused the coronavirus, but his dishonesty and his irresponsible actions made it so much worse."

Lucy Nicholson/Reuters Doctors say it's hard to get some patients to heed medical advice because they're convinced of misinformation about COVID-19 that they read online, The New York Times reported. Some patients demanded their doctors prescribe them hydroxychloroquine, despite reputable evidence that the medicine is not effective for treating COVID-19 and has potentially dangerous side effects. Others drank bleach because they believed it would be a cure. Some waited until it was almost too late to seek medical help because they didn't believe the virus was a big deal. Doctors have said they are struggling to get patients to adhere to some medical advice because they are convinced of misinformation they read online, The New York Times reported. "This is no longer just an anecdotal observation that some individual doctors have made," Daniel Allington, a senior lecturer at King's College London told the Times. "This is a statistically significant pattern that we can observe in a large survey." Allington is also a coauthor of a recent study that found people who got their news online were more likely to believe in conspiracy theories and not follow public health guidelines compared to those who got their news from radio or television. Some patients have demanded prescriptions for hydroxychloroquine, a medication that the Food and Drug Administration revoked from emergency hospital use for COVID-19 in June after studies found it was not effective against the virus and had potentially dangerous side effects. Last month, clips of a Breitbart video touting misinformation about the coronavirus and hydroxychloroquine quickly went viral on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, and were retweeted by President Donald Trump and his son Donald Trump Jr. The Times reported that some people have gone to hospitals to demand doctor's notes so they don't have to wear a face mask because they believed online rumors that masks lower their oxygen levels. Dr. Ryan Stanton, an emergency room physician in Kentucky, told The Times a number of patients waited until it was almost too late to benefit from treatment before going to the hospital with COVID-19 symptoms. The patients, according to Stanton, didn't believe the coronavirus was a "big deal." "They thought it was just a ploy, a sham, a conspiracy," Stanton told The Times. "It just blew my mind that you can put these blinders on and ignore the facts." Last week, a study from the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene found that at least 800 people died in the first three months of 2020 because of false information that claimed drinking bleach could cure coronavirus. Almost 6,000 people were also hospitalized because of that claim, Business Insider previously reported. Parinda Warikarn, a doctor in New York, told The Times she saw a patient who ingested bleach because he thought it would prevent the virus. "He clearly really believed that he was going to prevent Covid," she said. "Luckily, his wife and two young children didn't take this solution." Dr. Howard Mell, an emergency room physician in Illinois told The Times that the wife of a patient who died from the novel coronavirus yelled at him for writing COVID-19 on the man's death certificate and accused him of doing it for profit. "She yelled, 'We've seen online how you guys get more money,'" Mell said. Mell told The Times he deals with several patients each week who strongly believe false information they read online. https://www.insider.com/doctors-say-more-patients-are-denying-medical-advice-misinformation-2020-8

There is all sorts of tragic about these 170,000 deaths (and counting). As someone said the other day - each one is a personal tragedy for someone and for a family. I find it odd that many on this board want to rail against Cuomo for the mistakes he made in NYC and are laying the deaths of C-19 in his state at his feet yet want to claim Trump is absolved of any mistakes. . . . worse yet, the ONLY place I ever heard talk of Bleach being a potential remedy was Trump himself. We've got 800 deaths and 6000 hospitalizations from the ingestion of bleach, Trump as the only source for that rumor and still the cry from the right is that if we highlight the ongoing issues and false statements from Trump it's political. I guess I don't know how you make someone accountable for what they say and do without actually talking about it. Just look at his absurd comments about NZ in the last 48 hours. smh

hold on his response to the question was
"Is it something that people are talking about very strongly? We'll look at it."
I understand the side that hates Trump, would infer something other than what he said, but if taken for it's literal word like everything else he says is taken by the media... He asked if this is something that is being talked about, and said they would look into it.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.
