Oh I never found any joy in it. It was never my intent. Just the pattern that had developed.

It's like having a kid brother that sort of gets on your nerves. When later in life you each go down your own paths in life. Sometimes you are not as close as you were as kids. Even though he got on your nerves, you miss him.

Or as many families have, no matter his name or actual relationship to you, we'll call him "your crazy uncle Phil" for this purpose.

Now crazy uncle Phil shows up every year for Thanksgiving and Christmas. He always drinks a little too much, gets too loud and most in the family find him a little obnoxious. He always says things like, "Well when I was growing up", or "Well in my neck of the woods", as if those things gave him some clear view of the world picture. As if his narrow view of the world was representative of the big picture. Now everyone in the family understands that's in no way accurate and some in the family really aren't looking forward to his arrival.

But then one day uncle Phil dies. The holidays come and there is no uncle Phil. It's then when you realize how much you actually miss your uncle Phil. That families have different dynamics and every dynamic is an ingredient of that family. Without all of those dynamics coming together a part of your family is missing.

That's sort of how it is when you're not here.
